a new favorite! ♡

i finished always home (2025) this week and it was honestly so fun and endearing! i went into it without reading the novel first and i found it so refreshing how the ml was very friendly and sweet right from the start. nonchalant mls have their own charm for sure, but jing xichi set a new standard for me. there's something so heartwarming about the way he always initiated conversations with huan'er.. took the time to get to know her through daily mundane activities.. and was so outwardly caring towards her. it just makes sense for someone who loves you to do that.

i have so much to say about the drama itself but i'm still gathering my thoughts :_) youth dramas, you will always be loved by me!

Ziqi's self-loathing being so strong that he would rather just die than transform into his demon form, even in a situation where he has no chance of his sister finding out his secret.

His self-loathing being so intense that he legitimately believes the world would be better without him in it and that the only reason for him to exist is as a shield to his sister. That he thinks, as late as ep twenty-five, the only reason that he and the world need to continue existing at all is because there are people he loves in it.

Outside of the parallel world, he's someone who blames himself entirely for his family falling apart, even though he did nothing but exist. He's someone who thinks the world (and himself) is too rotten to exist, that in stories, the destruction of heaven is the right solution.

I also think about his life-saving surgery, which he waited so long to have, waited until it absolutely could not wait. Did he consider at one point that it was better off to just not bother, to not deal with the fear and the risks of the operation because does his life deserve to be saved anyway? After all, wasn't he just a burden? I imagine so.

I think I will always prefer the spin the drama took on LGIEF, of making it not just a romance but a story about self-acceptance and self-love that is both compelling and inspirational, without being too schmaltzy to take seriously.

Ziqi says, 'At what time can a human love someone 100%? It's not when I love you more than I love myself; it's when I sincerely like and trust myself'. What he is saying isn't that he can't love Miaomiao until he loves himself. He obviously can. We know this because he's loved her for the past twenty episodes, even when he was still in a pretty bad place. We also know this because he's had a crush on her since his tumultuous middle school years.

He's saying that he is now able to love her fully and without any reservation or fear, and with full belief that not only are his own feelings real and trustworthy, but that her feelings for him are equally as such, and that he is not undeserving of them.

And it's not about 'deserving' anyway. He's a person, and as with any person his value is in the fact that he is himself, not in the role he plays (his sister's guardian, a writer). He is Ziqi, and that's all he needs to be to love and be loved, 100%.
