I'm sorry, but this should come as a shock to absolutely no one.

Just a little bit of 'insider info' (and by 'insider' I mean I was a part of the beta testing crew a few years ago) Webtoons has been messing with AI tools for years. You can literally play test that very same AI tool that I beta-tested here:

Mind you, this is just an AI Painter, similar to the Clip Studio Colorize tool, but it goes to show where WT's priorities are headed. I should mention, btw, that this tool is incredibly useless for anyone not creating a Korean-style webtoon, like you can deadass tell it was trained exclusively on the imports because it can't handle any skin tone outside of white (trying to use darker colors just translates as "shadows" to the program, meaning it'll just cast some fugly ass shadows over a white-toned character no matter how hard you try) and you just know the AI wouldn't know what to do with itself if you gave it an art style that didn't exactly match with the provided samples lmao

And let's be real, can we really expect the company that regularly exploits, underpays, and overworks its creators to give a damn about the ethical concerns of AI? They're gonna take the path of least resistance to make the most money possible.

So the fact that we're now seeing AI comics popping up on Webtoons left and right - and now, an actual "Webtoon AI" branding label - should come as zero shock to anyone. Webtoons is about quantity over quality and so AI is the natural progression of that.

So yeah, if you were looking for any sign to check out other platforms outside of Webtoons, this is it. Here are some of my own recommendations:

ComicFury - Independently run, zero ads, zero subscription costs (though I def recommend supporting them on Patreon if you're able), full control over site appearance, optional hosting for only the cost of the domain name, and best of all, strictly anti-AI. Not allowed, not even with proper labelling or disclosure. Full offense to the tech bro hacks, eat shit.

GlobalComix - Very polished hosting site that offers loads of monetization tools for creators without any exclusive contracts or subscriptions needed. They do offer a subscription program, but that's purely for reading the comics on the site that are exclusively behind paywalls. Not strictly anti-AI but does require in their ToS that AI comics be properly labelled and disclosed, whether they're made partially or fully with AI, to ensure transparency for readers who want to avoid AI comics.

Neocities - If you want to create your own site the good ole' fashioned way (i.e. HTML / CSS) this is the place. Independently run, offers a subscription plan for people who want more storage and bandwidth but it only costs $5/month so it's very inexpensive, and even without that subscription cost you won't have to deal with ads or corporate management bullshit.

Be safe out there pals, don't be afraid to set out into the unknown if it means protecting your work and keeping your control as a creator. Know your rights, know your power.

A little fic I made not too long ago about my headcanon for Shane's backstory - how he met Jas' parents and how he became a father figure overnight. The adorable itty bitty Shanes were made by @lonely--seeker 💛 ⋆｡°✩🌃ִ ࣪✧˖°

It’s supposed to get better in the end. That’s what Reese tells him when they’re stumbling home from the third shitty bar of the night. The moon looks like a distorted halo above them—too intimidating, too bright—but there are never any stars in the Zuzu City sky because the lights of the city have long since swallowed them whole, snuffed them out with their artificial glow.

“What now?” Reese slurs. “Your call, Shane.”

Shane slumps his shoulders, wobbling with each step as he careens to the left and nearly crashes straight into his best friend. What now? Same thing they always do every Friday night. Reese goes home to Polly, and he stumbles back into his dorm room reeking of stale beer and cigarettes. In the morning, they’ll both nurse head-splitting hangovers and swear they’ll never drink again.

Then on Monday, Reese will go back to his classes. Shane, he’ll wait out the end of the semester before he packs his bags and tries to figure out the rest of his life. He’s going to lose his scholarship. He realized it the moment the player from the other team caught him at a bad angle—the moment he felt that awkward tackle connect. The moment he felt something in his knee tear.

Three months in rehab, and now the only thing he’s good at running is his mouth.

“I’ll probably start packing my bags,” Shane admits.

“Fuck that, man. It’s not over until coach says it’s over.” Reese slings an arm around his shoulder, mumbles about how they should get a bottle to-go, how there’s no way in the Yoba damned universe he’s leaving his best bud alone on a night like this. They’re just two twenty-somethings stumbling through the suffocating cityscape, and Shane’s head swims with both gratitude and bitterness, and other feelings he’s simply far too hammered to name.

Shane says something he’s never said to anyone else. “I just… I really wanted this to work.” Read It's Supposed to Get Better in the End here

I think the dynamic here is that Elliott just was where Shane is now. He's coming up from his rock bottom. He hit it in the city, and moving to Pelican Town was part of his growth in living for himself now. He's still trying to figure some of it out, but he's certainly in a better place than before he moved.

He's taking sort of a fake-it-till-you-make-it approach, because he knows the kind of life he wants to live but isn't so sure of himself yet. He overcompensates with the bravado and stuff but he truly does want this romantic lifestyle, the seaside writer with a classic look.

So he comes across Shane and we have a classic Hozier "you're familiar like my mirror years ago" moment so despite Shane's hostility, he very much wants to help him. He wants to be the person the old Elliott would have needed at his lowest. Someone who will stay through the good and the bad, someone to fill the silence when he doesn't feel like speaking, and listen when he does.

It's not romantic at first. It's a slow-burn. Elliott wouldn't be attracted to Shane right away when he is at his worst and greasiest. And Shane is too preoccupied with himself, but also hates how fake Elliott is. He sees his facade a mile away.

And it takes the facade cracking for Shane to finally let him in. Maybe Shane finally hits a spot too sore for Elliott to brave through and he disappears for a while. And Shane actually feels bad for once! Oh no the consequences of my actions! Who could have seen this coming!

He stews for a bit though, like who does Elliott think he is anyway? He's nothing to him.

But that alone merits consideration. Why would Elliott even care about him? He's not family, and there is nothing to gain from befriending him. He tries to tell himself it's just ego. Shane was a captive audience all those nights at the bar. That was all.

Except he knows it wasn't. He still hasn't figured it out, when he drags himself out to the beach one night to stand drunk outside his cabin.

He actually kinda wants to make sure Elliott is okay. But he can't bring himself to knock. Elliott opens the door anyway. He might have spotted him through the window, or it was just chance.

He's surprised to see him there, but his expression sours. He doesn't say anything for a moment, looking off and thinking, squeezing the door hard. Then he opens it wide, backing up and gesturing inside. It feels off. Like the air is sparking.

Then Elliott opens his mouth and his words drip with venom. "You want to see what's hiding behind the mask, Shane, there you go. Come on in." He crosses his arms and waits, seething, while Shane takes in how bad of a shape the cabin is. It’s a depression-nest of trash and clothes, mostly. Dishes piled in the small kitchenette in the corner. Sand litters the floor.

Elliott looks to be in bad shape too, his hair pulled back in a greasy ponytail, dark under-eye bags telling their own story. He’s not wearing his usual overcoat or vest.

"I am not perfect. Nobody is perfect. But fuck me for trying," he says darkly.

He's lost the pompous affect, even some of his accent.

Behind the mask is someone as fucked up as he is. Shane starts to put the pieces together and feels suddenly like he needs to help him, too. But he can't! He's not in a position to help anyone, and he probably made him worse, even.

"I didn't mean for this to happen," Shane mumbles hesitantly, unsure of what to say.

"Oh really? Pray tell what was supposed to happen when you said those vile things to me?"

Shane nods. "You're right. It’s meant to push people away."

Elliott leans against his old piano and huffs in a sort of agreement.

"I'm sorry, Elliott."

It's the way Elliott's face softens for a flash of a moment in response, that clinches it for Shane. That bit of raw emotion after staring at a mask for so long, that sweeps him off his feet.

He’s in love with Elliott.

“Let me help you clean up.”

Elliott is surprised by that too. “You’re drunk, Shane,” he says tiredly. The venom is gone.

“Get drunk with me.”

“That’s a terrible idea.”

“I don’t know what else to do.”

Elliott thinks for a moment, then sighs. “Let’s sit outside, I’ll get you some water.”

Shane almost smiles at that.

Things get better between them. Still bumpy sometimes, but they share the beauty in each other’s lives. Elliott teaches Shane about poetry and how really anything can be poetry. Shane pushes to try to see how many times he can say ‘fuck’ in one of his poems before Elliott rolls his eyes.

Shane brings Elliott over to see the hatchlings of the new year and the man honest-to-Yoba cries over it.

Maybe it’s when he starts to see Shane in his element and caring for something so precious, that Elliott starts to fall for him too.
