Save all the Games!
I haven't written in a while, but it occurred to me that maybe since the 3DS store is closing down, I should put more thought into preserving my Switch collection as I've spent so so much money on the store and continue to do so.
I had an epiphany of sorts - I realized that you can leverage multiple MicroSD cards to store your collection and as long as the SD cards are assigned to your Switch - you can switch(hah) them out as you please (just remember to turn off your console first!)
So I think my game plan looks something like: 1. Buy a bunch of 256GB cards (since they are the best price per GB option atm) 2. Figure out how to put games onto the cards organizationally. I'm thinking of just using the Group feature on the Switch to figure out what goes on what card 3. Use a spreadsheet to keep track of what game is stored on what card 4. Print QR Codes for each spreadsheet so I can quickly lookup what game is where. Thinking about it more, I could use Shortcuts on Apple products to basically create a query service where when I have a game I want to play I can just type the game in and it will find the info and let me know what card it is on.
While this sounds like a convoluted system, I actually don't mind it too much as it allows me to preserve my entire collection no matter what. I think at my last tally - I had more than 700 games digitally, so this would definitely take some time and resources to put together. I might wind up outlining the process throughout so I don't forget what I did. It would be fun to see how many games per card, how many cards, etc it would take to hold that many games. Plus not having to rely on redownloading games constantly would be nice.

Happy New Year everyone. Hope 2023 is as good for game releases as 2022 was. I’m still catching up! I’ll probably update this post with my five favs soon. I’m also planning on streaming in the near future. Just have to get a few more items.

I’ve been working on trying to get my home network situated and I think I finally figured out a way to keep all my save files for my various games synced across every computer on my network. Which imo is pretty dope. I’m going to see if I can make it work across mobile devices as well and if I can well that’s ballgame.

Activating Combat Mode
Tumblr media
I've been playing Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core Reunion lately, and as someone who's played the PSP version a lot back in the day - I'm really enjoying this version MORE than that version for whatever reason. I'm not sure if it's been streamlined more...or what but it's definitely a better experience than I remember. I'm probably....one fifth through it? Maybe? and I haven't been able to put it down. I actually put Chained Echoes on hold.
Speaking of, I've linked a lot of my other appearance through the internet. You can find it at the little arrow in the upper left under my picture. You'll be able to find my Backloggd, github and more. Anyway, what's been your favorite part of FFVII CC?

Music in Gaming
One thing where my interests converge is with video gaming and music. As a teen when I had access to my own money and my own car - I would often go to various anime shops in my area and find gaming soundtracks. Now, I was a teen in 1999-2002 so the market for gaming soundtracks was NOWHERE near where it is today. The fact that I can go online and purchase vinyl of just about any release I can think of is insane to me, because during the time I really collected CDs - I either had to be lucky and get them as a bonus (Such as in the Final Fantasy Anthology collection) or as bootlegs. Ever Anime was one of the bigger ones and it brought me Final Fantasy IV Celtic Moon and Final Fantasy IV Piano Collections. Both of which I listened to the hell out of on the bus ride to and from school.
Tumblr media
So as a result, I have found a wealth of gaming soundtracks over the years and one series I keep going back to is the SQ series. It's basically remixes of all sorts of Square music. Everything from Final Fantasy, to Brave Fencer Musashi and even Threads of Fate (!) is represented in some manner. I think SQ Battle and SQ Chips are probably my favs out of those. If you have never heard these - I highly recommend searching the web for them. They may have clips on youtube. It's definitely worth the price of admission in my opinion.

One thing I've always wanted to do..
Not sure how controversial this is anymore, but I really want to have a home/travel emulation solution where I can play games on my dedicated emulation station (for now my Mac Mini 2012) and when I travel - I already have all the saves uploaded to my travel emulation device so when I play on there - I can continue where I left off. Then once I get home, I can upload those saves and continue playing on my home "console" - lather, rinse repeat ad nauseum.
Now - why would I want to do this? Truth be told, I've been playing emulated titles since the MID 90S. Yes, I'm old af. I get it. But the problem is - I never have save files from the 30 years of gaming I've done. Now, I've owned COUNTLESS games over COUNTLESS consoles over the years. I still have a Virtual Boy collecting dust. I also have a Gamecube and other misc consoles. I currently use a Switch for most of my gaming and a Series X when I want to hit up something more high fidelity.
Taking a detour for a moment, I want to say that the Switch is easily my favorite gaming device of all time. I get to play all my old favorites and new all in a package that I can ...Switch whenever I want and play handheld or on the TV whenever. This in turn made me realize the power the Switch has. While it may not be in Graphical oomph, but it allows me to play games that are as high quality as around the X360 era wherever I want. So - this got me thinking, what if I wanted to play even MORE titles that aren't available due to never getting a re-release or being so obscure (I'm a huge obscure Japanese RPG fan) that a re-release, remaster or whatever is nothing but a dream.
Enter my project. Thinking about it - I think my best bet is to use Retroarch - as I can use software on my Mac like Hazel to make sure whenever a file changes (in this case my saves..) that they instantly copy over to wherever it needs to go. So if it's from my handheld (which I'm still shopping around for) then it uploads to my console and vice versa. So for now, I'm going to figure what the best idea for this is and go from there...

I've been waiting for this to come to Switch for quite some time. I'm glad it's finally coming so I can have a majority of the Final Fantasy games on my Switch to play at any time. I'm hoping that Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy Tactics are on their way. The Nvidia leak shows that FFT may be on the way ....I'm willing to bet they are doing a HD-2D Remake of Chrono Trigger if I had to guess.
There's of course a ton of other classic SE titles I'm hoping get ported like Brave Fencer Musashi and Xenogears but the fact we are getting Front Mission 2 which was previously unreleased here is pretty dope. I'm glad they are putting more effort in bringing stuff we never got here. I've always wanted to put out Youtube streams or reviews of me playing these games but I'm way too self conscious and wanting it to be perfect for that. It consumes me unfortunately...
