I love how we are all ignoring the elephant in the room (and other mostly female issue) that led to the end of their relationship based on TTPD: they seemingly had plans for next steps in their relationship including having a family and there was either no forward momentum there anymore or it was constantly being pushed back on. It becomes a female thing because the biological clock starts ticking louder at 30+ and it can’t be constantly pushed back on forever if you’re a woman.

We should talk about it!! And I definitely do and will, because it is so deeply present on this record.

I think there’s a reason this album resonated so strongly with older women. Because this is extremely true. This is a unique pain that is intrinsic to womanhood. And Taylor touches on this, in The Black Dog, when she says that she knows her ex’s new girl will be younger than her - men can have children whenever, because they can always date younger. But that isn’t a strategy for women; dating younger doesn’t solve our fertility issues. There’s a specific tone to the pain and regret we feel when a man who was on the same page as us about children changes their mind after the fact. Because we don’t have leeway in this area. We have so much data that tells us that having children after 35 is risky. We have data that tells us that it gets harder to conceive naturally. So when a man changes his mind, we didn’t just waste our time and energy - we wasted our fertility. The link between fertility and youth is such a complicated and painful thing for women. And it’s all over ttpd.

It’s why she desperately wanted the Matty thing to work: she didn’t want to waste any more time, any more youth, any more fertility, to achieve this dream she felt was slipping away. And just as one man was clamming up on that dream, another was whispering in her ear that he was reformed, and that he could give her all those things. And best of all, he could give her all those things instantly.
