hello!! i just came across your account and it looks like an amazing development so far! how are things going? hope you're alright
Oh my gosh, I hadn't realized how long it has been since I last updated this blog! Please, take this screenshot as a gift to make up for my lack of communication!
Tumblr media
I got some good feedback from my testers, and as a result, I've tried to clarify some things in the dialogue, and fixed some really embarrassing typos, (including one within the first three minutes of gameplay which had somehow slipped past the eyes of not only myself, but also four other playtesters.) Current word count: 49,508
It legitimately surprises me every time someone reaches out to me about this game or interacts with this blog, expressing interest in the project. No matter how much time I spend working on the project, it still feels like I'm tricking all of you into thinking my game is worthy of your time. :P While I've been adding scenes, the single most interesting segment I've added to the game is the somewhat-tricky-to-unlock ending in which the player character has her first kiss. (At least, I suspect that is what will be the most interesting part for most of the people following this blog. I actually prefer the scene with the fighter jet, but that's because I'm weird.)

Looking for game testers
Tumblr media
Still working on the game.
Current word count is over 40,000.
I was hoping to find one or two people to test out the game in its current state for me and provide feedback. I can’t pay anyone, but I could maybe offer my services at coding a visual novel. For example, each of my testers might be allowed to submit the script for a Yu-Gi-Oh scene to me, and I would turn it into an extremely short mini-visual-novel for them in exchange for useful feedback. If you are interested in being a game tester for me, send me a direct message. (I’m only looking for one or two people, and testers will be chosen at my discretion.)

Yu-Gi-Oh Visual Novel Update
Tumblr media
My work on the visual novel continues.
Current word count: 33,513
Number of endings written: 6
Not sure what Yu-Gi-Oh visual novel the title refers to? Check out the game’s introductory post.
I’m working on a short video trailer for the game. Hopefully, I can find time to finish and share it with all of you in June.

This is such a cool project!! What are your ideas for gameplay? Will there be a story mode and multiple endings? Sorry if you already answered this- I just came across it!
Thank you,
A fellow yugioh fan
Well, it’s pretty basic visual novel gameplay. The dialogue and narration show up in a box at the bottom of the screen. The user clicks to move to the next block of text, and sometimes the game requires you to make a decision about what the player character will do. Usually there are sprites to represent the people your character is talking to.  The whole game is a story, and it currently has five different endings. (I’m planning for it to have a total of NINE endings, but I’m still working on four of them.)
I’ll post some images below to show what I mean about the gameplay. I’ve named Player Character “Sally” for this playthrough. (Please keep in mind the game also has background music, sound effects, and the sprites move around the screen, but those things are hard to show with screenshots!)

As you can see, my choice to talk to Mokuba lead to another choice—now I can choose what I want to talk to him about. Specific choices can unlock other options for Player Character down the road, so even seemingly unimportant decisions can have an impact later in the game.

where can i find this game exactly?
are you just posting screenshots of them, or is there a place to find or download it?
A perfectly reasonable question.
The game is still in development, which means you cannot currently download it. When it’s finished, I’m hoping to set up a page for it on itch.io, where people would be able to download it for free.
I know it would be really easy to fake gameplay screenshots, so I’m going to add a couple of images to try and show I’m not just making something up for attention.
(Not that you accused me of doing such a thing, but this is the internet, we all know people sometimes lie for attention.)
Tumblr media
This first screenshot is the result of running the basic error-catching program built into Ren’Py. (Ren’Py is the program I am using to code the game.) As you can see, the game’s current word count is 23,172, which is already a few thousand words longer than when I first posted about this game last week.
Tumblr media
The second screenshot is a bit of the game’s code itself. (Again, just trying to show that although the game is unfinished at present, it is a real thing, and worth being interested in—because I work on this game multiple times a week, and have every intention of finishing and sharing it with all of you.
It has been quite flattering to see the amount of interest my few posts about this project have gathered. I appreciate every like, reblog, and comment.
If anyone has any other questions, feel free to send them my way.
P.S. @setokaibafan15 Since it would seem Kaiba is your favorite, I’ll go ahead and include another screenshot of the game itself with your favorite guy from the show. (The image chosen is not a commentary on the fact you sent me a question, it’s just happens to be the only other Kaiba screenshot I have at the moment.)

Yugioh visual novel setting
Tumblr media
I’ve talked in a couple previous posts about the gameplay and the main character. Today I want to talk about the setting.
The game takes place after the events of the Duel Monsters anime.
Important facts about the setting:
1. I’m a huge fan of localization in general, and the 4Kids dub, so the game is set in the USA.
2. Domino City is on the East Coast. (I like to think it’s in Virginia, but other options are currently viable as well.)
3. I know officially the Dark Side of Dimensions movie is set in the manga continuity. That being said, I sort of cram it into working with the dubbed anime continuity.
4. This game takes place about a year after The Dark Side of Dimensions.
5. Many characters from the anime make an appearance.
6. Due to the nature of the player character, the game gives opportunities to learn more about the other characters and their world, so this game would probably be enjoyable even for those who don’t know much about Yu-Gi-Oh!
7. In this game, profanity doesn’t exist. (It’s not in the dub, and frankly, I’m a dork who doesn’t like profanity. *shrugs*)
8. Joey is Regional Champion, and as a result, has been invited to a fancy party at Industrial Illusions. He has invited Player Character to join him as his plus one for the event. (For both parties, this is their first time officially going on a date with someone.)
9. I’m a huge believer in character growth, so I like to imagine everyone has a positive future ahead of them. Of course, some characters improve a lot more slowly than others. *glances at Seto Kaiba*

Man, I’ve got to come up with a better title for this game than the insanely generic “Yugioh Visual Novel.”
Any title suggestions?
I was thinking maybe: Yu-Gi-Oh: A Date With Joey.
On the one hand, the subtitle “A Date With Joey” seems good because it’s literally what the game is about. And I don’t want to hide that fact. But I’m a little concerned because that title makes the game sound more romantic than it is—and people will be disappointed if they think the game will be really romantic and I’ve written something slightly romantic. :P

It’s a fan game, so it will be free to play.
The game is being made with Ren’Py.
Currently, it contains 20,933 words. It will definitely end up longer, since I’m still working on it.
The current outline contains nine different endings. (Four already written.)
Want to hear more, keep reading. :D

Yugioh visual novel Player Character
Tumblr media
I wanted to have a post to talk about the main character of the game.
(Her default name is “Valerie,” but you can name her anything you like.)
Some important facts about the main player character: 1. She’s basically my sister. I coded the game so you can input whatever first and last names you want, but this isn’t a protagonist written to be super generic as an ideal self-insert character. (You can also use the default names if you would prefer.)
2. She’s never been on a date before.
3. She’s written as part of the world, with different connections, (or lack of connections,) to each of the characters who appear in the game.
4. She’s close with her older sister, who’s a lot more intertwined with the dueling world than she is. (You can also choose the name of her sister.)
5. Most of the time you can’t see her, because she’s the player character. (Like Phoenix Wright.) However, there are a few exceptions. It’s important to remember she’s heavily based on one of my younger sisters, and this includes her appearance in the game.
6. Player character has personality. For example, she doesn’t like dueling, but has a favorite card. Definitely likes some of the other characters more than others.

I’m making a Yugioh visual novel

I started working on this game as a birthday gift for one of my younger sisters. She’s one of those people who “likes Yugioh, but not any of the parts when they play the card game,” so a visual novel seemed ideal. All the characters, none of the card game. :P
The basic plot of the game is your player character going on a date with Joey Wheeler at a fancy party thrown by Industrial Illusions.
Some important facts about the gameplay 1. It’s supposed to be a romance, because I know my younger sister is sad about being single in Real Life, and Joey is the kind of guy she likes. That being said, this is the most unromantic game about a date ever made. (I blame the fact that I’m aro ace for this, since I literally do not have a personal frame of reference.)
2. Although you mostly play a character based on my younger sister, there is another player character in the game. (At least, during some routes. It depends.)
3. You can stay focused on having a fun date, or explore what else is happening at the party—there are a few subplots to investigate.
4. Significant replayability. The game contains a few places where your options are somewhat randomized, so on your second playthrough, you might discover choices you never saw the first time. Nine different endings.
5. Your choices matter. The outcome of the game can change as early as the first choice made by the player.
6. Most of the game’s assets are from either “Duel Links” or “Legacy of the Duelist.” However, there are some backgrounds and sprites custom made for this game!
7. If the game had an ESRB rating, it would probably be “E,” so don’t play the game if you exclusively want something salacious.
