i've started reading camgirls: celebrity and community in the age of social networks, an academic text from 2008 and it's really interesting as a look into this almost forgotten internet subculture. the most obvious thing is that the word "camgirl" back then didn't have an immediate sexual component to it, it was just a term for women lifecasting, as it was called back then--broadcasting events of your life in video form on the internet.

i'm not super far into it but apart from this historical aspect it also really raises some interesting points about online communication that i think have just become even more diluted over time as we've started having phones with us all the time and being online at all hours.

like, one of the things the book brought up that felt really eye opening is that all online communication, at least in text form, is dialect and not a dialogue because we are always 1) broadcasting our message 2) receiving a reply that we can respond to or ignore and 3) broadcasting a clarification to our original point.

another thing the book brought up is that "public" communication in the traditional sense used to be tied to a specific time and place. like when you'd go to a meeting of e.g. a political group somewhere, the conversation that happened there was over when you left that meeting. but with the internet and online communication, that conversation can just never end. you can keep receiving replies to something even days and weeks later. or in the case of me and this book, 17 years later.

ok i do know actually i was trying to draw with greys and dark bg color only and using less layers so it was like doing paint irl i guess? never used so much non colourful colour b4 so heeeeeh

i really like how his face looks esp w lack of details idk i think it looks neat
