Kitsune Lore

The kitsune are intelligent beings with long lifespan. If they live long enough, they can grow up to nine tails.

They have their own realm in the Demon world. It is possible to enter the kitsune realm from human world through certain Shinto shrines which are protected with Inari statues, but you need kitsune blood to open the gate between realms.

Family relationships are important and above everything else. Family will decide the fate of its members and can heavily punish anyone who doesn’t obey.

Females are rarer than males. So, they don’t accept marriage between kitsune female and male from another race. Though sometimes young human male unknowingly marries a kitsune female, who can be a really devoted wife. If the human eventually discovers the kitsune’s true nature, the kitsune-wife is usually forced to leave him. It is possible that the kitsune relatives come for the kitsune-wife and children.

The kitsune’s human form can vary but most of them have yellow eyes.

Humans and kitsune can have children which are half kitsune. Most of them have yellow eyes but sometimes they can have their human parent’s eye color too. It is possible to seal the half kitsune’s fox side with blood magic. Half kitsune’s lifespan is a bit shorter than full kitsune’s but it is still way longer than humans.

The kitsune have a power called kitsunebi, the foxfire, which is blue. Young kitsune love play tricks with it and it doesn’t actually burn anything. But older kitsune can turn they foxfire into burning form and are able to defend themselves with it if they are threatened.

Some of the kitsune can walk into other people dreams and they can talk with the other kitsune if they enter their dreams. They can’t talk with humans in their dreams.

Errhh… well, she… Somehow, she had heard about… you know… the pregnancy thing. I didn’t tell her, she already knew. And when she visited, she said something about how the little one could join us next Halloween…

[Yuriko smiled to Ruki. It was so nice that he had come back so early. Now they really had the whole evening for themselves.]

Oh, it wasn’t that bad. I used to do almost all grocery shopping by myself back when... Well, earlier. And I didn’t want to bother you because I know that your meetings with Karlheinz-sama are important. I can do this much.

[Yuriko didn’t complain though when Ruki carried the bags to the kitchen. There was a pleasant scent of chicken soup in the air and it made her stomach rumble. She helped Ruki to put groceries away and then hugged him back when he wrapped his arms around her.]

It was fun actually. I met someone from school and we talked for a while. Then I went to buy all the things on your list. On my way back to home I stopped in the park. I hadn’t realized how beautiful trees are right now! It’s always so dark when we go to school that I have missed the autumn leaf colors.

[Yuriko turned to look at the table, and her stomach rumbled again. This sure was how a home should feel like. It was so nice to come back when dinner was ready.]

Oh, Ruki, this soup smells so good! I can’t wait to taste it! All your cooking is always excellent but I think this kind of soup is really fitting for crispy day like this.

[Yuriko sat down and looked Ruki directly in the eyes. Her heart fluttered so much.]

They were often reserved for special occasions for his brothers, such as their birthdays or something worthy of joyous celebration. He tried to keep it a secret from Yuriko, but he had recently made some homemade ice cream. He planned on making something special with it that they could enjoy together, just the two of them. The only problem was that he wasn't certain which flavor she would enjoy the most. One day he tried a very subtle method to coax her into admitting what type of cake she'd like to eat.]

Yuriko, did you see this catalog in the mail today? I'm not sure how this got addressed to our house, but it looks like there are all kinds of gourmet desserts listed here. We should hide this before my brothers get any crazy ideas.

[Yuriko was making dinner when her father walked in the kitchen. She spun the wooden spoon in the curry to make sure it was okay and checked the timer of the rice cooker before turning around.]

Yuriko: “Um, dad?”

Keisuke: “What is it?”

Yuriko: “I met someone in the school yesterday…”

[Keisuke raised a brow for his daughter and sat down opening a newspaper on the table.]

Keisuke: “What about it? Should I be worried?”

Yuriko: “Of course not! I just wanted to tell that maybe I’m slowly gaining some friends…”

Keisuke: “You shouldn’t be thinking about that. What you need to do is make sure you get good grades this time. You don’t need friends for that.”

[There wasn’t much Yuriko could say about that… She wanted to, but her father was right. He hadn’t had said it this time, but she had failed so badly that he would never forget it. But the thing was… that if Yuriko had had friends back then, maybe she wouldn’t have failed her third year. If instead of bullying there had been someone by her side when her mother had went missing, perhaps she wouldn’t have skipped most of her classes. Now that she had met Elizabeth things could be different. They could be better.]

Yuriko: “You know, dad, friends are rather… important.”

Keisuke: “They leave you sooner or later. So, don’t build unnecessary relationships that are doomed to end.”

Yuriko: “You don’t know that…”

[Keisuke looked up from his newspaper. There was something in his eyes Yuriko didn’t quite get. They were as cold as usual, like she had failed again. The freezing silence rose around them. Father just didn’t understand what Yuriko needed in her life; somehow, he had never understood. It was like she had always been a burden for him. But if she had friends, then she wouldn’t have to rely on him so much… He wouldn't need to listen to her stories, she could tell those to her friends. Yuriko was sure that Elizabeth would be happy to listen to her, even though they had talked only once.]

Keisuke: “Do as you wish but don’t come home crying if they leave you.”

Yuriko: “I won’t.”

[Yuriko turned around and checked the curry again. Usually, it’s spicy scent was soothing but not today. She spun the curry thinking her meeting with Elizabeth. They had visited the library together and talked about some odd things… and Elizabeth had been so nice. She hadn’t laughed at her. Maybe they could really be friends. Elizabeth seemed so sweet that she surely wouldn’t leave Yuriko just because she didn’t have mother at home or bully her because of who she had dated years ago.]

Keisuke: “That friend of yours… they aren’t a boy, are they?”

Yuriko: “Elizabeth is a girl.”

Keisuke: “Good. I guess it’s okay then.”

(( I just realized how Yuriko really doesn't have that many people in her life and she doesn't talk with her father that much. So this ended up being more what she thinks than her talking about Elizabeth. ))

[Yuriko blushed as Ruki licked the whipped cream off her face. She shifted in her chair thinking how they looked in the eyes of the others.]

[Yuriko took her cocoa but this time made sure that not any of the whipped cream would not end up on her lips. As Ruki started talking about Karlheinz she relaxed and concentrated listening to him.]

That sounds... like a big thing to me. There is still so much I don't understand about vampire politics and such, but I'm sorry to hear that you were used as pawns.

[Yuriko wasn't sure if she liked this Karlheinz or not, even though she hadn't even met him in person. She didn't like the idea that he had used Ruki and his brothers for his plans... but she decided not to say anything about that, because she also knew that Karlheinz was an important person for Ruki.]

Umm... well... I'm glad it isn't a big deal for you anymore.

[How long that would be; Yuriko didn't know and didn't want to think about. She pushed that thought away and ate her sandwich while looking at Ruki. He really seemed to be happy, happier than when they have met. She wanted to keep that smile on his face too. It warmed her heart and made her feel like she had finally found home for herself.]

This day has been so lovely. I... I think this has the best date I've ever been, Ruki.

Um... Ruki? I know we are living together and see each other... like every day... but... Ahem... I'd love to... go to a date with you. So, please?

She continued walking and shifted the book pile in her arms. Maybe she could try to find a couple of more books from the library. But Elizabeth's sudden question got her off guard and she stopped walking.]

[Yuriko looked around but it seemed that they were alone in that corridor.]

Umh... well... One of these books said something about that people went missing in a nearby forest back in 1800s. I tried to figure out which forest that would be... and I think it might be that one near the Sakamaki mansion. But I don't know if there was anything supernatural about that. People back then thought so, or so the book says.

[Yuriko pressed the books to her chest before leaning in and whispering.]

I... I didn't believe in the supernatural stuff before but after I transferred here... Well, now I know that at least some tales are true and... Umhh... I don't want to scare you or anything.

[Yuriko straightened herself and started to walk again her cheeks burning.]

So-sorry about that. I shouldn't have said anything weird! I just want to figure out some stuff... and... Well, it doesn't really concern you, and I don't want to bother people. But I'm really happy that you were willing to help me carry these. So thank you! Let's hurry to the library.

[Yuriko was holding a book pile while she rushed through the corridors. She turned from the corner and stumbled into something... someone. Her books went flying to the floor and she stopped blushing heavily.]

[Elizabeth lets out a quiet squeak as she collides with Yuriko. She falls with the books to the floor, then squints and covers her head.]

[It was an ordinary Sunday afternoon in the Mukami manor. Ruki was downstairs preparing a meal for his brothers as usual. He cooked Kou's favorite vongole bianco and his signature prawns that Yuma would scold his brothers about; Kou for taking too many and Azusa for taking too little. However, today's bickering escalated quickly to the point where Ruki could no longer watch idly.]

Ruki: Enough, all of you. This is exactly the kind of behavior that makes Yuriko feel tense at the dinner table. How much longer will you continue to act like children?

Kou: Ehh?! But Ruki-kun, Yuma took the—

Yuma: Don't give me that! Kou always takes all the fuckin' food! It's not fair of him to leave us all hungry like this!

Azusa: Ah... this is why... Yuriko-san hasn't looked at me... in a while.

[Ruki slammed a hand on the dinner table, raising his voice. His brothers quickly felt obliged to cease their conflict.]

Ruki: Silence!! Don't make me repeat myself. There is enough to go around for everyone, and ever since she started living with us I even increased our food portions to accommodate for all five of us. I won't stand for it if she continues to feel unwelcome under our care. If I hear anymore stories about a food fight or someone taking more portions than they should, then it will not end well at all. We need to act like a more well-behaved family for her sake.

Kou: Wow, Ruki-kun. You really care about M-Neko-chan, don't you? It's been some time since I've last seen you lose your cool like this!

Yuma: Seriously? I never knew Ruki could feel so strongly about Sow. Love makes him say some pretty weird things.

Azusa: For... her sake...? What do you mean... Ruki?

Ruki: It should go without saying. This is her new home now. Her previous living situation was nothing but terrible and I want her to forget all about it as long as she is under our roof. A good start would be if we could keep the arguing to a minimum. She's someone very precious to me... the last thing I want is for her to feel the need to run away from us next.

[He paused for a moment, taking a deep breath.]

Ruki: Yuriko is the woman I love wholeheartedly. She has brought more happiness and joy to this house than you'll ever know. Without her, I wouldn't be able to live such an honest, carefree life. The least we could do is behave ourselves around her. Is that understood?

Kou: ...Haha, Ruki-kun's in looove! Is it just me or is he completely head over heels for M-Neko-chan?

Yuma: Ah, what the hell? What did ya do to the real Ruki? My brother wouldn't say anything this sappy!

[Yuriko sat up slowly and tried to check her surroundings. She remembered coming to this party she had actually wanted to skip. Then she talked with Laito, drank something and... Then what? Her head was hurting and she didn’t feel so good... and she had woken her head on Irina’s lap.]

Oh my gosh!

[Her head span from the sudden movement. She pushed her fingers to her temples and rubbed them.]

I’m so sorry, Irina! I remember talking with Laito-kun and then nothing...

[Oh gosh! What had happened? With Laito and with Irina? How shameful of her not remembering! This was terrible! Irina must thought Yuriko was a total idiot for behaving like this.]

Uuh... my head hurts. [She rubbed her temples once again.] I guess I’m a bit hungry though. But... but... I’m sorry for causing troubles for you. I hope... I didn’t... do anything... stupid...

This isn’t like me. I don’t do these kinds of things... I really don’t... 

[Oh, how embarrassed Yuriko was. Irina always was so nice to her and now she had let her see her like this.]

[Yuriko couldn't believe that people from school had been able to talk her to go this party. It seemed like all the cool people were there... and then there was her. It was so crowded that she felt a bit dizzy.

Yuriko rested her glass of lemonade on the table and took a big breath. Maybe she should head home... but before she could do that someone came talk to her. Oh, why had it be Laito... She really didn't want to talk with him and tried to avoid him as much as possible but he was persistent and kept asking her to come with him.]

I really need to get going... I... I'm not interested... to come with you...

[Yuriko grabbed to her glass and marched away from Laito hoping that some other girl would catch his eye. She took a big sip of her lemonade.]

This surely tastes a bit strange... Ummmhh...

[She was thirsty so she drank it anyway... but now she was feeling even more dizzy than earlier. She wavered to another room and stumble upon someone. She recognized Irina instantly even though she was a little blurry in her eyes right now.]

Hehe, Irinaaa~ Didn't know... [hick] that you're here, too... Fufufu, did you know that... that... that... Oh, you're so beautiful! I can't... hehee, I can't take it! Umh... and you are cool too.

[Yuriko wobbled and leaned in. Uh huh, she had never felt like this...]

Those dishes have really... difficult names but they sound interesting. Maybe I should try them sometimes. Though I’m not sure if there is a shop that sells them here.

[Yuriko watched as Irina took the bottle from her bag wondering what she might be drinking. Could it be... blood? Yuriko decided it was better not to ask about that.]

Um... I live in town. I usually walk to school since it doesn’t take that long. We have tiny apartment just for dad and me. It’s nothing much but I like that it’s close to center of the city and walking distance from the school.

[Yuriko smiled and shifted to a better position. She rested her head against the back of the chair.]

This is rather cozy... I actually like this. But aren’t your parent worried if you stay too late here?
