A very cute, and rather interesting-looking episode.

The main thing that stuck out to me here is the comedic direction in the episode's forehalf. Lots of odd timing to sharpen the jokes and lots of funny facial expressions. The second half is not quite as good but any lack of visual panache is more than made up with for the fact that, like, I mean, like. Like? I mean. Like.

Pretty good episode this week, but I've realized I have something of a problem with this show.

Don't get me wrong. For the most part, I love it. The three characters we've been introduced to so far are all great. I love that we get to know Subaru a little more here, and I love the ongoing exploration of how Nina is just kind of a completely walled-off ball of anxiety that desperately needs an outlet---any kind of outlet---before she explodes. The show still looks great, too, there's lots of fun expressions in this episode and I love how it goes full music video when we get to the actual performance at episode's end.

But there's the issue, right there. The band (who are going by a temp name as of this episode), just....aren't particularly exciting, musically? Now, one would maybe not *expect* that an amateur group would be exciting, but I *would* expect them to sound unpolished and energetic. They've got the energy down, but there's a disconnect between how raw Nina is supposed to be as a vocalist---even if it's pointed out that she is naturally talented---and how the group's music actually *sounds*, which is really polished and I'd almost say anodyne. It's safe. It doesn't move me in the way that the show clearly wants to move me.

That's not an automatic death sentence for a music anime necessarily, but it makes it harder to get invested than it otherwise would be. This is especially weird because the OP theme to this show is actually pretty good (although given that it's from a nebulous point later in their career its polish is also much less a source of cognitive dissonance). I'm not saying these girls need to be the MC5 or anything, but a little more grit would've been nice.

We'll see how I feel next week, I suppose.

Do other writers ever get this like, hyper-specific dialogue exchange drop into their brains and you know exactly where these character are standing and what they’re doing and how they’re saying these words but that’s all you get. You don’t have much other context and this specific moment that exists only at this time in your headspace??

I feel very alienated from the rest of the LGBTQ community because I'm ugly enough that I don't pass in the slightest which makes me feel like I'm not welcome in most trans spaces. Because of this, I know zero other gay women in real life other than my two roommates. Engaging with yuri media is one of the few things I do at all that lets me feel connected to other gay women, so when someone does the "actually, yuri is written by and for straight men" song and dance, with the strong undercurrent that engaging with it at all makes you a bad person, it just makes me feel like absolute garbage.

Which is the point, since a lot of this stuff is just petty social score-settling that doesn't actually involve me. Score one for them with me as collateral damage, I guess.
