SpongeBob will coming to Madden NFL 21
Electronic Arts has revealed all-new SpongeBob SquarePants content for Madden NFL 21. In The Yard, players will be able to check out the new SpongeBob Reef-Top location, which features a plethora of imagery of the character, as well as Nickelodeon branding. Players can see the Krusty Krab nearby, while a SpongeBob float and the Nickelodeon balloon can be found in the air. Completing challenges in the location will allow players to unlock exclusive gear based on the series, as well as new game modes. The timing of the event seems to coincide with this weekend's NFL Wild Card game that will air simultaneously on CBS and Nickelodeon.
Look, I’m not going to begrudge you if you really want to have Spongebob uniforms or whatever in Madden NFL 21, but it’s pretty dumb. And, if that’s what the team is aiming for, why not go all the way? They should just put Patrick in the game as a nose tackle and give him a juiced player card in Ultimate Team. Or let Mr. Krabs coach your squad in career mode. Let’s get really stupid with this crossover event.
Original Story: Don’t tell Doug Pederson, but SpongeBob SquarePants appears to be coming to Madden NFL 21. The embattled American football sim attracted the worst user reviews in Metacritic history when the annual update launched on the PlayStation 4 last year, but a barely-any-better PlayStation 5 port later and EA Sports is now promoting the crossover of the century.
The teaser was shared on the Madden social media account, asking fans, "Are you ready?" -- a reference to the signature line in the SpongeBob SquarePants intro song. Funny enough, it's also the opening phrase for Hank Williams Jr.'s Monday Night Football theme song.
The post also featured an image of SpongeBob's face along with the date January 7, which is presumably when we'll learn more about this crossover. While Madden and SpongeBob may seem like an odd pairing, it actually makes sense if you saw our previous post about the NFL and CBS Sports collaboration with Nickelodeon for this weekend's Wild Card game.
