like with hatred's theme i was expecting to feel TRAPPED. i was expecting to feel like i was fighting my way out of a hell of my own making, faced with an enemy i could not beat.

and instead i got. triumphant electric guitar????????? like i get its supposed to be like your hope is winning against all odds but bro KICKED MY ASS dawg. the victory honestly felt WORSE because the theme was so generic. felt like i wasnt really fighting anything incomprehensible or beating insurmountable odds. it just felt like any other boss fight.

block tales is fucking crazy in a good way (chapter 3 KICKED MY ASS and i LOOOOVEEDD all the yume nikki/lsd dream emulator inspo) but i think my biggest (if petty) gripe is that the game has NO musical identity

it was already kind of weird to me when cruel king's theme was. chiptune? and midi-esque? when i was expecting something grand and regal? no hate to campyfire because he's a great musician but i just wish the boss themes fit better. im gettin a little tired of electric guitar riffs ngl....

i think the electric guitar worked for griefer cause his whole thing is like. early 2000's y2k aesthetic and it actually FITS like it feels like some shit he would actually listen to. the leitmotifs are nice but i think you kind of have to remember that leitmotifs exist to tie different themes together and can be changed to fit different scenarios. not every boss theme has to be an Awesome Badass Banger Theme

like i straight up cannot express my disappointment when the entirety of chapter 3 was this genuinely beautiful surrealist hellscape with a really good atmosphere-- and then hatred's theme was ELECTRIC GUITAR!!!!!!! WHATTT!!!!!!!!!!!! wheres the wing howling?? the ambient droning??? the off-kilter instrumentation?? the OMINOUS VOICES??????? WHERE IS THE SAUCE!!!!
