has anyone talked about the insane amounts of symbolism present in the 'sorry' board in mouthwashing yet . sorry for bad picture. major spoilers & very disjointed ramble under cut

first off, game pieces corresponding to character names. jimmy: green, anya: blue, daisuke: pink, swansea: yellow.

curly's name is white, like the board spaces; ever-present & vital to the environment, but unmoving.

a traditional game of 'sorry' is played clockwise, with the coloured being 'safety zones' for their respective player, and the final scoring tile of each being 'home'. two pieces cannot occupy the same tile - if a player's piece lands on top of an opponent's, the opponent's is returned to the start.

jimmy's green pieces are all in safe tiles, one of them headed towards the scoring 'home' tile, meaning he's likely to be the first player to score a point - he's 'on top' of the situation, protected by his own control & view of the narrative. visually, they have one of anya's blue pieces surrounded, with one piece approaching from behind.

daisuke only has one pink piece out, because he's new. one of swansea's yellow pieces is approaching from behind, likely symbolising his eventual mercy kill. (although it's worth noting that when the game pieces show up as symbolism again during the vent sequence, the pink piece is shown knocked over next to one of jimmy's green ones, indicative of jimmy's guilty conscience & who's really at fault.)

i'm a little less certain on anya's and swansea's other pieces. one of anya's is about to enter the 'safe zone', which might be related to her later locking herself in the med bay (one of the only spaces on the ship she considers safe, due to the broken vent & the lock on the door). she also has more pieces out than anyone else.

will update & edit when i piece more things together & get my thoughts solid. for now here's some snippets from a vintage sorry rulebook pdf that made me clutch my head

The Mouthwashing demo is interesting because, though we’re shown scenes that appear in the final game, it also shows the fifth day before the crash.

For context, this new day happens after the crew receives the news of their layoffs and, if canon, it reveals that Curly and Jimmy had a second medical evaluation with Anya.

In Curly’s evaluation, he confides again about his sleeping problem. We also get confirmation that he actually takes medication for it, but it’s not very effective.

And he asks her once more if he is still fit to fly the ship. However, this time we don’t get a confirmation that he passed his evaluation, as the scene cuts to black before she gives her professional opinion.

Now, in Jimmy’s evaluation, he lets her know what he thinks about her medical qualifications.

It’s unclear what they were talking about here: she could have been reviewing his previous med eval or a new one, but judging by both their tones, Jimmy most likely didn’t pass — at least, in the case they were talking about his med evaluation and not Curly’s.

It’s also possible they were talking about something else entirely.

What comes next though, is very intriguing.

Who is this “us”? With only the demo, it would be easily to assume that they were in a relationship. But with the context of the full game, we know he’s talking about himself and Curly.

And, either he’s threatening her into silence, or he’s putting in her mind the idea that, if Curly were to discover what had happened, he would have a mental breakdown that would endanger the whole crew. Maybe both, even.

It’s not much, but I think it gives more context to some scenes in the game.

Jimmy only commits his worse moments when he’s alone with each individual character.

It’s implied he corners Anya in her room. He brutalizes Curly when everyone else is busy under the guise of medicine. He convinces Daisuke to go into the vent when Swansea can’t stop him. He kills Swansea after everyone is dead. It really highlights the type of violence he commits. He is a coward, he won’t take his chance if there is a possibility of active conflict, yet, he jumps on the opportunity to do so when there’s no risk. Not just when there’s no one to stop him but when he knows there’s no one to witness it. To judge and directly call out his faults.

No one outside himself to really see him as the monster he would never admit he is.
