Zhopout founder's interview at tamil.yourstory.com
Introduction & all about Zhopout
[Below is the english version interview of Murugan Durai – Zhopout founder, which published at tamil.yourstory.com]
What problem does your startup solve? What is the solution? Mention your pricing of the products?
Zhopout is a mobile & web application which helps shoppers to discover local brands and deals with cash points, which in-turn helps brick & mortar retailers to get more footfalls (O2O).
Shoppers would get location-based deal notifications; find brands with exclusive & non-exclusive offers /deals at their vicinity.  It also helps stores to reward shoppers for their 5th or 9th walk-in based on the analytics data.
Shoppers would also discover the brands & products of the local stores like in which store they can get park avenue women shirts at OMR, donuts at royapuram, etc.
Zhopout so far curated 1000 local stores and 600 stores from shopping malls of Chennai.
Competitors of Zhopout are are Shopholix, Fashalot, kloseby & Shopsup.
A brief overview of the sector that your startup is working in. How it has evolved, size and predictions and who it caters to?
According to IBEF Retail Industry Analysis, India’s retail market’s total size was estimated to be around $672 Billion in 2015 and expected to hit $1.3 Trillion by 2020 with growth rate of 16%.
Behind the Scenes What is the story behind the startup, that is, how did it come to be? Do you have co-founders? Mention their details?
Zhopout’s founder used to shop with his family at Chennai Shopping Malls a lot and most of the times find difficulties in finding location, their deals & their brands and almost used to buy without deals as there wasn’t any notification then. He wanted to solve this problem and founded this company as a solution.
Background of the founders. Team size (No of members started with and now working currently) and bifurcation from starting to now.
Murugan Durai – Single Founder, who previously worked at TCS, have more than 10 years of experience with software product development. Four member team, has a full stack developer who predominantly works on API, web, mobile application, back-end systems. Founder works on marketing, sales, application architecture and leading the team with daily operations.
Questions to Founder
Can you introduce yourself, your background and native, educational qualifications?
I am Murugan Durai, studied Diploma in a Chennai – Central Polytechnic College and worked at TCS before starting-up.  Please refer this two minute story from my friend’s blog. https://gokoulane.wordpress.com/2014/07/21/bhajji-shop-to-buckingham-palace-my-inspiration
After completion of education where did you start your career? How many years of experience and what’s the nature of your job if you have worked?
Started my career as a hardware service engineer and within few months transferred to software development team on my request back in 2005. Had almost 10 years of experience with software product development when starting-up my own company.
Founder’s Inspiration
What motivated you to Start-up? Is it a dream from the beginning or which was the point you decided to start-up?
I used to support my mother at fruit shop from early school days; it is not a big surprise that I always dream to starting-up which lead me to save some money during my stint at London – TCS office to invest.  After returned from UK, while working at TCS – Chennai, started working in different ideas at my free times, even able to form a full-time (2 member) team & paid them to work at my ideas like cricket based game and Zhopout (then it was only a web product). After a year of that, I wanted to quit & join my own product team as our minimum viable product was almost ready.
Do you have idols, mentors and whose words to follow? If any pls give some quotes?
Currently seeking mentorship from Balachandar Muruganantham, Head of International Operations of Voonik.com,who always advised us to focus on providing more value to the customers and revenue generation.
Is it bootstrapped or funded? Who are the investors and mentors? Funding details if received? Future plans?
Bootstrapped and invested INR 6.5 Lakhs as working capital till date. Currently we are looking to raise a smaller round as a seed round.
Challenges
Any major struggles or Challenges faced during the journey?
We are working hard to get more traction with shoe-string budget for marketing without outside funding. Though Chennai is famous for its B2B startups, we wanted to be a good successful, profitable B2C startup from Chennai by 2018.

10 Reasons Why should not visit Chennai
Chennai is not even a tourist place to visit and below are the reasons you should never visit.
1. Chennai don’t have any shopping malls & international brands.
2. They don’t have notable street food(s). 3. Chennaites knows nothing about technology. 4. Under-developed City & transportation is very little helpful.
5. People are not helping to each other,  hence you can’t expect it too.
6. Chennai knows nothing about cricket.
7. Here, people always eat idli, dose & they  will ask you ‘what is pizza & burger?’
8. Local people speak no other language except Tamil. Even you could not find any Shop boards in English.
9. There are no historical establishments & diversity.
10.People don’t have music & cinema sense.
Oh! wait,  are you saying that Chennai is not that bad? In fact, it’s like one of the coolest metropolitan city in the country.
Well, then you’re right because, Chennai indeed is one of the most wonderful cities in India. It’s the only city in South Asia and India featured in the “52 places to go around the world” by The New York Times and named as one of the top ten cities in the world to visit in 2015 by Lonely Planet.

8 Local Dishes You Must Try in Chennai
From authentic Korean cuisine to exquisite sushi to a Russian stand-alone restaurant, Chennai’s food scene has gone truly global, but in this piece, we put the spotlight on 8 dishes (from morning to evening) that the city can call its own even though some of them might not have necessarily originated here.
1. Filter Coffee From the early risers (the city is full of them) who grab their tumbler before sunrise at Hotel Saravana Bhavan (HSB) on RK Salai or Old Mahabalipuram Road to the tumblers of coffee that are served at Karpagamabal Mess and Ratna Cafe, almost every corner of the city boasts of top quality coffee. Freshly brewed decoction comes together with high fat milk in a tumbler that overflows with froth and a brew that is almost guaranteed to coat your tongue.
2. Masala Dosai
It was Udupi restaurateurs like Dasaprakash and Woodlands who probably brought this dish to Chennai. You can try their ghee soaked, crispy dosai version in restaurants like Krishna (Woodlands) or Mathsya or have an improvised Chennai version – the ‘caloricious’ GheeMasala Roast at Hotel Saravana Bhavan, which is a meal in itself.
3. Full Meals
There’s the all-vegetarian version – you could try the traditional Tamil Nadu meals or Andhra Meals (at restaurants like National Lodge) or even a Kerala Sadhya or head to one of the city’s Military hotels (Like Velu Military hotel) or restaurants like Junior Kupanna where an array of meat gravies complement standard fare like sambar and rasam.
4. Nethili Fry
Chennai’s fishing community can claim to be one of the city’s earliest inhabitants.  One of the city’s quintessential seafood dishes is Nethili fry – fried anchovies tossed in a spicy masala (most restaurants coat the anchovies in a spicy ’65’ masala) -crunchy and scrumptious. PC: http://seethaskitchen.blogspot.in/
5. Biryani The Dindigul version cooked with the small grain Seeraga Samba rice is trending in Chennai but it’s the Ambur version cooked at Muslim weddings that is still the gold standard. Chennai’s iconic Buhari Hotel might be better known outside the city for inventing Chicken 65 but it’s the biryani that rules the roost here.
6. Mysore Pak
Chennai sells way more Mysore Pak than Mysuru; it’s the one thing most people will ask you to carry back from the city.  The Mysore Pak fans in the city are divided into two camps – those who like the softer ‘Mysurpa’ version that was made popular by Shri Krishna Sweets and the slightly coarse yet crumbly Mysore Pak that tastes best at Grand Sweets. Try both and then take sides.
7. Sundal
The Marina beach – one of the world’s longest urban beaches, is almost an integral part of the city’s identity. It’s also the best place to sample sundal – usually boiled whitechanna (it’s common to find black channa and green peas versions too) tossed withmustard seeds, grated coconut, raw mango and curry leaves.
8. Atho
Chennai’s Burmese connection – a large number of Tamils left Burma in the early 1960s, is most evident in North Chennai where quite a few hole-in-the-wall establishments (there’s even one that calls itself Atho Shop) serve delicious Burmese street food. This includes the fiery Atho – fried noodles tossed with cabbage, onion and tamarind juice. If you can’t make the trek to Burma Colony, there’s Ma Tint Tint in the heart of the city.
