What Black Twitter is Not

A divisive tool to exacerbate race relations in the U.S.

The need for black people to make everything about race.  

A reason to ignore the frustrations of black people by calling them “self oppressed”

IT IS

A place for black people to congregate, tell stories, share news, and make jokes, create culture, and connect with people who share similar plights and interests

Also, a lot of your companies twitter accounts that you love so much (ahem Wendy’s) draw their content from Black Twitter so you’re welcome.

Black Twitter is a place for black people to share similar cultural experiences.  This is done primarily through hashtags. A popular hashtag #thanksgivingwithblackfamilies pokes fun at situations and traditions that are common at Thanksgiving with black families.

And in the case of what has become colloquially known as “Black Twitter,” all of those things have gelled to create an online culture of black intellectuals, trendsetters, and talking heads giving voice to many of the issues that 20 years ago would’ve remained far away from the mainstream radar.

I like this article because I feel like it takes some of the political tension out of the idea of Black Twitter.  Yes, Black Twitter can be used to activate a community, but at the heart of it it is just a place for Black people to share their experiences with other black people.
