Sesame Allergies Are Likely More Widespread Than Previously Thought

As an ingredient, sesame is pretty popular— it’s in tahini and sushi; it’s often mixed in granola, sprinkled on bagels or used as a flavoring in an array of dishes. But according to new research, this may be a problem for a substantial number of Americans.

While previous studies suggested sesame allergies affected about .2% of U.S. children and adults, new research published this week in JAMA Open estimates the number of sesame-allergic Americans could be as high as .49% — around 1.6 million people.

The study’s findings come at a time when the FDA is considering adding sesame to its list of top allergens that must be noted on food packaging. Last October, then-commissioner Scott Gottlieb issued a request for information on the “prevalence and severity” of sesame allergies in the U.S. to aid in its decision.

Luckily, a team of researchers led by Dr. Ruchi Gupta, director of the Science and Outcomes of Allergy and Asthma Research Team at Northwestern Medicine, already had data on hand — information from a national survey of food allergies they conducted between Oct. 1, 2015, and Sept. 31, 2016. For this study, researchers distributed surveys on food allergy diagnoses and symptoms to nearly 80,000 different people in over 50,000 households. To meet Gottlieb’s request, all they had to do was pull out their sesame data and give it a look.

The meal that could stretch as dinner and maybe top with fried egg if there was still some left.

Mongolian bbq reminds me of having enough money for one mall meal. Of the times I would work doubles at Red Robin in Christmas season and I couldn’t stomach French fries anymore (okay, maybe a day). The mish mash mix of frost bitten meat and lobster sauce with extra extra garlic brings me back to the age old question after fifth period (combo fried rice or something else?) and shooting the shit until PACN practice.

When I think of banchan, what do I feel? Community because it’s shared? Happiness because deliciousness stems from humility and self-preservation.

Oh banchan, how I love thee. I could, in fact, count the ways.

Yesterday I learned “cherriums” exist! Cherry + plum hybrid stone fruit. Extremely ripe. So much so I thought my nails would puncture the flesh. Size of a small plum, not too sweet but juices overflowing.

There was almost silence the moment my lips touched the peel, but the liquid bursts from its thin, tannic layer of protection which resulted in a giggle as I tried to catch every last drop in my mouth and not the floor. There is no silence when the fruit’s delicate flesh hits your tongue as you’re either closing your eyes in euphoria and asking God why you’ve never eaten one of these before or you’re already asking for another.

Attempt #??

Blogging has never been a strong suit of mine. Whether it's getting so caught up with life or shooting myself in the foot with my paperless paper trail, maintaining an online diary has always gone awry.

So of course, I'm going to try again.

One of my greatest character flaws is my inability to quit despite my best interest, self-awareness, and constant disappointment through what I blame on foot in mouth disease but really just my willing ignorance.
