new to hockey and trying to work out what the HECK the combine is? some sort of voyeuristic fitness test? is this real? how can this be real. i searched for fics but i found none and i have a million questions after seeing that photo of sid's titty fat getting pinched?? measured?? what>>????

It was definitely put together by a sadist with a taste for young boys.

Essentially they do a ton of physical tests (in Sidney’s time it included push ups mandated at one per second, pull ups, throwing a heavy medicine ball, the weird chest contraption that measures push strength I believe, going as fast as you possibly can on a bike hooked up to a mask to measure your stamina and breath capacity) as well as taking height, weight, and body fat measurements (hello titty fat calipers). All together in a big room with the press and the team scouts and your fellow draft class watching.

Sid did all this (except the bike) with an injured knee btw.

Then they go to select team for interviews where they ask increasingly wild questions. Last year, notably:

David Reinbacher is Austrian, btw. Also this team, the Canadiens, drafted him. Yikes.

However. Sid was such a sure thing (his draft class was pretty weak plus. you know, he was already dubbed The Next One) that reportedly many teams asked him if he had any questions for them instead. Spoiled little chosen one always getting special treatment. 🙄

The teams take all the physical data from the combine floor, the insights from their interviews, and their other scouting info and use it to inform their draft plans. One would think that the players’ on-ice performance that got them to the draft in the first place would speak for itself but then they wouldn’t get to see sweaty little boys put through their paces and make them squirm trying to come up with the right answer to nonsense hypotheticals I guess.

The rituals are incredibly intricate.

My most problematic exclusionary unclebrained sports fan take is that you should be actively praying for other teams players to break their legs. You should be on your knees begging for their own knees to crumble into dust at the mere sight of your stadium. You should want them to die.
