The gaang and how they cook, my headcanons:

Katara: She follows the cook book and every food that she makes has 110% of her energy into it, and occasionally, when she runs out of certain ingredients, she replaces them with something on hand and creates the same dish with a slight twist. (She would buy the ingredients beforehand and meticulously read the book, but when she forgets to buy something, for example, sausages, she would replace them with something on hand, for example, imitation crab meat or blood sausages.)

Toph: Her cooking style would be more baking and steaming, learning from youtube videos about what ingredients go well and what don’t, but she doesn’t really have a lot of confidence in the kitchen due to the fact that her parents never really allowed her to cook in the kitchen, and occasionally, Katara helps her out with the cooking and ingredient buying. (Toph would listen to how to make claypot chicken rice, memorise the recipe as well as she can, and ask Katara to help her get the materials. The presenation wouldn’t be the best but slowly, she gains more confidence and her kitchen skills and her presentation starts to incorporate elements of herself.)

Suki: Her cooking style would be rather similar to that of Katara’s, but she would include elements from her childhood or her community. (For example, if the recipe she’s doing is a kimchi bibimbap, she would include ingredients she grew up with, for example, if she grew up with a certain type of fish, the dish would be catered around the fish.)

Aang: He would follow the recipe but add his own little twists, but when he doesn’t have a large chunk of the ingredients, he makes do with what he has on hand. (If the recipie calls for a roux mixture of flour, milk, butter and cheese, he would mix flour, milk, butter, cheese and some spices like paprika, oregano, cinnamon or star anise. If he doesn’t have the ingredients needed for the recipe, for example, he would only have rice, seaweed, some furikake seasoning, but the bento calls for eggs, tuna, mayo, and other vegetables, he would make a simple onigiri.)

Sokka: His style is the most experimental of the group, constantly changing everytime he does a recipe, and creates a mess while he’s at it. (For example, the first time he does a dish related to tofu, he would make a simple sweet and salty sauce that goes with it, and the next time he does a dish related to tofu, it would be a sweet and sour sauce topped with some meat to accompany the tofu.)

Zuko: He adds a lot of spicy ingredients into the dish without thinking, so the dishes certainly look intimidating in terms of colour. He would also add slightly more than the required ingredients, but the more you eat the dish, the dish would grow on you and the dishes that he cooks are passed down from his uncle and his mom. (I’m just gonna use Tom Yum Gung as an example because I’m craving it right now, [also his uncle would be well traveled in a modern au and would’ve been to thailand and learnt the recipes too-] but basically, he would add a little bit more of the required spices and a lot more of the chili paste, and a lot of shrimp, and when he brings it to the table, a lot of them are intimidated by the colour of the Tom Yum Gung but when they try it, they would start to like it and the dish would grow on the gaang)

Zuko: Why are you pissed at me, Katara, I thought we were friends?

I’ve been reading some older atla fanfic, like, from before the fandom resurgence in 2020, and I have to say: the characterization of Zuko in older fics feels way more true to canon then in a lot of the newer stuff, and man. I knew that the fanon Zuko bugged me but now that I’m reading fics where he’s characterized properly I’m even more bothered by the sad boy-uwu-cinnamon bun Zuko that he’s been turned into

Zuko is a dick. He’s hot headed and snappish and his trauma often comes out in anger. He’s more confident then fanon makes him out to be. He’s not as much of a pushover as fanon makes him out to be. The way he has been characterized, his edges softened to be more likeable, has done such a disservice to his character it’s tragic

This flashback in ATLA, Azulon becoming enraged with Ozai for disrespecting Iroh and the recently deceased Lu Ten, is usually interpreted as Azulon then ordering Ozai to kill Zuko. I disagree with this for two reasons. 1: We don’t actually hear Azulon say that, it’s only referred to by Azula (who was around seven or eight at the time and might have misunderstood what she heard) and by Ozai, years later, when he is taunting Zuko on the Day of Black Sun. Neither Azula nor Ozai are reliable narrators. 2: Azulon is, at the time of this flashback, the ruler of the Fire Nation who has just lost one of his only two grandsons and heirs. What kind of monarch loses one heir and then turns around and demands the death of another, especially when losing Zuko would hardly bother Ozai? My interpretation of this situation is Azulon ordered Ozai to give Zuko into Iroh’s care, replacing Lu Ten as Iroh’s heir, neatly removing any argument Ozai had about Iroh’s line having ended. Ozai of course would never accept this. He either lied to Ursa, claiming Azulon wished Zuko dead, or outright told his wife he’d kill Zuko before seeing him get ahead of him in the line of succession, thus manipulating Ursa to help him assassinate Azulon. I think this theory makes far more logical sense than ‘Azulon ordered the murder of his nine-year-old grandson’.

how toph picks clothes

i have a fun headcanon that the gaang describes colours of clothes to toph (not that she cares much to begin with lol, only if she asks) as expiriences!

Panel 1: The comic is in greyscale. Toph and Katara, from Avatar: The Last Airbender, are walking in a market. Katara has her hair down, wearing her mother’s necklace, and Toph is wearing a sleeveless vest because shes cool like that. Toph is trudging along unhappily, when Katara pulls on her arm and exclaims “Ohh! You should try this on, it’s beautiful!”. We can’t see what Katara is referring to, but she is pointing to an item off screen.

Panel 2: They stand next to a clothing rack at one of the market’s pop-up stalls. Katara and Toph are touching one of the dresses hung up. The dress is bunched up into clothing folds like a curtain, so not a lot of detail can be seen. Katara looks happily convinced at her good spotting, but Toph is unsure, saying: “I dunno. Fabric’s nice, what’s the colour?”.

Panel 3: They are still standing at the rack. Katara is looking at Toph, one finger raised matter-of-factly, and says “You remember that time Iroh made us apple tea on the beach?”. Katara is smiling at Toph as she says this, and Toph gives a small “oh yeah!” of understanding.

Panel 4: The market background has faded out, and become an artificial grid wallpaper. Toph and Katara and walking, with Katara looking down at Toph happily, shopping bags in the crook of her elbows. We can see Katara is wearing pants (yes girl). Toph is to her right, bare feet planted firmly in the ground and knees bent slightly, looking like she’s about to jump. Toph’s hands are raised in celebratory fists above her head, and yellow exclamation beams surround her ecstatic expression. Toph is wearing the new dress which, unlike the greyscale comic, is a dynamic mixture of warm red, orange, brown and green. There are sparkles covering the dress, which goes down to her ankles. She looks extremely happy, in a dress the colour of a perfect afternoon.
