I was watching the Nautilus E/V Livestream of them studying a whalefall and it occurs to me how weird it would be for everyone involved if one of those lil camera sibs bumped into the Nemesis or a Decepticon on the ocean floor

Oh my gosh, imagine if THAT was how people realised where the Nemesis has ended up after it gets moved by the underwater earthquake.

Firestar, are you worried about Red Alert with him being so far away?

“Surprisingly, no. Not everyday at least. I think I have more to worry about with everyone here. In-Inferno gives me more to be con-concerned about than Red ever did.”

Buster, is there anything you were surprised to have to introduce the Autobots to?

“Not really, I mean they’re robots. Aliens. Alien robots. They’ve been asleep for four million years, anyone’d be behind after that. And probably dead, but that’s not the point. I did spend two hours explaining dental hygiene to Sideswipe the other day, but I’m pretty sure the bots on the whole know about that and Sides is just... Sides, I guess...”

Ratchet, do you have any memorable stories from when you were working in your clinic?

“Hm. Optimus wasn’t in the clinic, so I won’t tell you that one. It isn’t the most interesting story either. Just me, and him, and Jazz, and a lot of glass in strange places. No, what about that one... hmph... A particular mech I saw often around the clinic. He was tall, about Starscream’s height maybe, but not that big. He was an obvious frame convert if I’d ever seen one, and he was... Buster’d call him ‘spacey’. He’d stare aimlessly at walls, and at these crystals he carried everywhere. He lived at Ragtag’s Refuge, this warehouse place set up in memory of a gang leader who’d been kind to casteless mechs, but he... I’m not sure what his accent was. Towers? Crystal City? Either one. He must have been on steam or over-clocking, or something, you could see it in his vents by the corrosion... And I treated this mech a few times, but he was usually just taking up space outside. Sigma, I’ve forgotten his name it’s been so long... started with ‘D’ I think...”

“I chose my team. They’re all my closest friends. It began as myself and Firestar, then I met Chromia. Greenlight I met next, and Lancer came much later. Moonracer was the last of us, unsurprisingly for her age. She became lost trailing her brother around the compound when he was selected to become one of the wreckers, and practically stumbled upon Greenlight kicking my aft in a training session. I don’t suppose it was the best first impression, but she seemed impressed enough.”

Ratchet, what sort of public health education is standard for Cybertronians? As the CMO, is it your responsibility to teach the Autobots that sort of thing, or is that something you can delegate to someone else?

“Not enough. Attend physicals, take immunisations, listen to your medic. Pay attention to your frame and take note of any changes. See your medic if your fuel requirement suddenly changes. That was about the extent of it. And no, I didn’t often see many patients who followed even that basic advice. Apparently, the caste system believed that you didn’t need to know anything about your own frame unless it related to your caste. Warnings and advice were distributed by Med Practise 2 as needed. Infection containment, etcetera. Occasionally local government instated temporary injunctions on the advice of medics, but that was usually long after situations got out of hand…”“That was why I quit structured practice and moved to the Dead End. When you’re down to your frame I suppose you’re more interested in keeping it. Higher castes, ‘ma’am, your leg is falling off’, ‘oh I can get that replaced’. Casteless mechs, ‘slag, my elbow is squeaking, I should get that seen to’.”He rearranges his files. “Yeah, I’m in charge of forcing health awareness on the Autobots. Have been since the start. I shared it to a degree with my team, but they either died or left with the Exodus. It came down to myself, Firestar, Hoist, First Aid, and the few bots with basic medical training.”“Even so, I did and do take it very seriously. That’s a part of why I wasn’t too popular before the Exodus, and why mechs started calling me ‘the Hatchet’. Because I come down on anyone not looking after themselves and shout their helm off,” he adds with a wry smile.

Hotwire, does it bother you to be treated like a kid?

“Bother me? In what way? I don’t like being reminded of it for sure, and I don’t like being called ‘kid’, but I’m not subordinate to anyone because of my age.”

Barricade, how would you feel about someone wanting to kiss you? If that person was another species, would it change how you feel?

“Not really. Affection either way isn’t something I seek out.” Now if you excuse him he was trying to nap, and doing so is already difficult enough when there’s ocean water lapping at the base of your berth.

“I do not understand why young humans are expected to carry out similar levels of work as their mature counterparts. It worries me that Carly claims the schooling workload of Hillary is ‘light’ compared to other regions. How can that be when students Spike’s age are attending five hours of classes a day with only a total of ninety minutes respite, and they are then assigned up to four hours extra work to complete outside of school per week?”

Jazz, do you have a story behind how you ended up an autobot?

Jazz stretches and a lighter sheen runs over his visor. “I been here since the beginnin’ man. Met OP in Polyhex when he crashed at my place after A3 went off the rail and I’ve been ridin’ ever since.” Jazz rocks backwards in his chair and cracks his ankle joint against the console, “y’could say we been Autobots before there were Autobots, Ratch’ and me. Then came the old mech, then Prowler, Commander Lita… Chromia, Inferno an’ Firestar… etcetera.”

Optimus, how did you and Roller become friends?

“Ah. To say Roller is a friend of mine stretches the definition of the word a tad. Roller is an autonomous drone formed from a portion of my spark. We have been what is termed a ‘symbiotic unit’ since I emerged from Vector Sigma. Roller’s existence depends on myself. I have limited control, or perhaps more accurately, influence over his actions, and his systems are intrinsically linked to mine. It is such that l could survive without Roller, but Roller would not survive without me.Roller has the approximate intelligence of a well trained turbohound, and has a tendency to act like one. He is reminiscent in his behaviour of the particularly small breeds typically owned by the upper castes before the Exodus. He does not realise his own size I believe. Roller is also scared of thunderstorms.I do consider Roller amongst my most vital companions however. In a way, he has always been a friend of mine since the moment we onlined.”
