Cat's Chimerical Creations, Frankenplushies, Inspiration, and the Norwescon Monster Mash

Oftentimes, when I'm not actively putting together one of my own frankenplushies or working on the database I built to keep track of them, I'll be scouring various parts of the internet, digging up ideas for new creatures to build and befriend.

Which is how I discovered, via Flickr, that a sci-fi and fantasy convention called Norwescon has apparently been hosting "Monster Mashes" where attendees are encouraged to "don your best mad scientist outfit and create marvelous monsters and creative chimera! We will take cute, fluffy, stuffed animals and hack them into pieces only to reassemble them in wholly unnatural ways."

And that is how I fell in love with this little chap in particular. Born at Norwescon 35 in April 2012, more than thirteen years later he has a baby brother!

I don't know where the parts used to make his spikes came from, and I couldn't readily think of any donor plush I had that had something similar, but I did have a tonne of shark fins left over from building my Quintshark

(btw, I did a quick Tumblr search - aha on me, I know - for Norwescon Monster Mash and I turned up this post for a person who'd lost their frankenplush at the 2025 convention; it's a long shot at this stage, but figured I'd post it here just in case anyone could help!)

So, if anyone has been to a Norwescon Monster Mash, and has pictures they'd be willing to share, I'd love to see them! And if anyone knows the person who made the original spiny bison / chameleon hybrid all those years ago, feel free to point them my way - I would love to say thank you!

let me frankenstein you (i have the parts)

Partner and I were watching that episode of Truthseekers with the witch who makes a little ragdoll to put her soul inside so she can get revenge after being executed, which struck me as a terribly good idea tbh.

So I asked him if he wanted me to put his ghost inside a plush body once he was dead and he was like, "I'm suprised you haven't prepared for that already."

He likes playing video games and has bad eyesight, so I told him I'd make him a body with huge eyes and multiple arms with big hands and a wide handspan for maximum gaming enjoyment.

But then I was thinking that, while he's still regular-alive, his plush body would be sitting there empty and uninhabited, while all our other plushies have their own names and personalities and go on their own adventures.

It would be like having a weird floppy corpse just sat on the sofa among them, while all of us wait for Partner to die.

And how would it feel, the empty shell, knowing that it was never designed to be alive in it's own right when all it's plush brothers and sisters were? Knowing that it was born to be spare parts? Would it grieve the life it never had? Would it hate us? Would it want revenge?

Will we ironically meet our ends at the hands of the thing I made to save one of us?

So I'm probably not going to make one after all.

Or I'll make one but keep it partially assembled, then just quickly sew up the last bits when Partner's on his way out.

Cat's Chimerical Creations Lore: Nina Tucker

This is Nina Tucker the Dog / Human Chimera:

I think most people, even if they've never read or watched a single moment of any version of Fullmetal Alchemist, is aware of Nina's backstory, so I won't go into that here.

None of us are really sure how Nina got here; for obvious reasons, when she first arrived she wasn't really in a position to tell us, and nobody wanted to push.

For the first year or so of her time with us, she stuck very closely to her Big Brother Nublet; we think maybe she was drawn to all the red in his colour scheme, but we don't really know. Nublet was an excellent brother, making sure she was safe, warm and cozy at all times and showing her all the spooky and Christmas things that he loves and even getting a second Christmas Hat for her to wear year-round so she could be like her big bro.

After she'd been with us for a year, Nina was hanging out on the sofa while her daddy watched Pro Wrestling. This seemed to inspire something in her, as she started to try putting a headlock on one of her brothers.

(although Fattiyeti took a few minutes to realise what was happening, and was a little suprised to find himself very slowly being pinned, he was more than happy to go along with it, both as part of being a good brother and for the joy of seeing Nina pick up an activity of her own accord)

Soon after this, Nina asked to have her Santa hat removed, and began requesting wrestling whenever we were discussing what to put on the telly.

These days, she loves to watch wrestling with her fellow fans, Sprite the Cerberus and No Legs Tigermask the action figure.

She also loves to practise her wrestling moves on her siblings, particularly Jimothy and Thomathan the Nightstalkers (who are always happy to use their long necks and tails to help her with any manoeuvre she's struggling with), and Minty, who can be replied upon for excellent heel promos.

In January of this year, Nina defeated the rest of the Bedtime Crew during a Hell in a Cell match:

Eventually, she would like to grow up to be one of the Wargs from Baldurs Gate 3, and eat many adventurers (in kayfabe).

Cat's Chimerical Creations Lore: Little G

This is Little G the Gremlin Child:

Little G is a scrapbag baby, made from leftover pieces of three different Beanie Babies.

Little G is quiet, small, and kind. He loves to spend time with his big brother Fattiyeti, and enjoys playing games, earning trophies, and discussing boats (one day he would like to build and sail a boat too!)

He started coming out of himself a bit more as of February 2024, when he was a specifically named guest to his Daddy's birthday party (all the babies are automatically invited, but Little G tends to spend a lot of time packed away in the storage tubs so sometimes you have to be a little more direct if you want him to show up!)

For his Christmas letter to Santa last year, he made a lovely drawing of him with Fattiyeti, which Father Christmas greatly appreciated!

Little G is the quintessential little brother - just happy to be included, and always ready to join in with whatever activity his siblings are doing!

Sometimes my partner and I worry that he might be overshadowed by the more forceful personalities of the rest of the Bedtime Crew, so we try to take him out for one on one time every now and then.

His most recent trip was out the library and then to a pub for dinner with his Daddy, which he said was very exciting but also tiring!

But mostly, Little G is a homebody who loves to spend cozy times with his brothers and sisters!

Cat's Chimerical Creations Lore: Chance

This is Chance the Rescued Bear:

I was casually scrolling some local FB groups late one January evening when I came across this post:

I showed my partner the post.

"...do you want to go out and see if he's still there?" my partner asked.

"...yeah, actually."

So, gone ten o'clock on a Wednesday night, when I have work the next day and should have been headed to bed, we put on our warm clothes and headed out into the wind and the rain to look for this little lost teddy bear.

Based on the above photo, we thought he'd be in the Sunken Gardens along the seafront, but after walking the length of it a couple of times, couldn't find him.

Maybe his owners saw the post and rescued him?

Since we were out already anyway, we figured we might as well check the rest of the prom, just in case.

As we got towards the end, under the hazy sodium glow of a streetlight in the salt spray, we saw something on one of the far benches.

"It's a McDonalds bag," said my partner.

"Let me just check real quick," I said.

Readers, it was not a McDonalds bag:

He was in bad shape; covered in sand and grit from the beach, soaked from the rain and the sea, back seam torn open and ketchup smeared across the wound.

When we got him home, the first order of business was to pull out all the soggy, gritty stuffing, and then give him a bath:

After that, he spent two weeks hanging in the window, drying out in the weak sunshine.

Once he was nice and dry, I filled him with fresh stuffing and added a few scoops of beans to give him weight:

I could have tried to make the repair job on his back seam a little more subtle, but I thought that a bear this tiny and this brave deserved to have a visible record of what he'd survived. I used triple threads of blue, red and green to match his collar:

When the time came to pick a name for him, we went with Chance after my partner repeatedly exclaimed "what are the chances?" following his rescue.

Chance originally had a flocked nose, but during his misadventure by the sea he got a big scratch on it and over time it's peeled off to leave shiny black plastic.

Based on the collar, we think Chance was originally a Paddington plush with a dressing down, and based on the torn back seam we think he may have been scavenged specifically for that dressing gown:

Chance doesn't remember much about his life before; he says he remembers hurting, and being very scared and alone in the dark.

These days he loves warmth and sunshine, spending time with all of his siblings, and, if the weather isn't obliging, keeping cozy.

He's even been known to turn to the occult in order to bring back the sun:

Cat's Chimerical Creations Lore: Mister Poison Paws

This is Mister Poison Paws the Robin / Scorpion Centaur:

Although he does indeed have poison inside his paws, his name is something of a misnomer, as anyone poisoned to death with his paws can also be resurrected with a second stab.

He enjoys combing his bird parts in order to remain nice and smooth. He also enjoys bullying his daddy by pretending he's about to poison-stab him, but then actually smoothing his head feathers down.

He likes to hide, and is very afraid of the concept of having fans. (I suspect he just doesn't want Minty to start following him around in search of "fame"). He likes to keep everything a secret, to the point where his catchphrase is "ssshhh!" accompanied by a claw lifted to his beak, and his 2024 letter to Santa was completely obscured with a "top secret!" sticker.

(Santa seemed to understand what it said though. Similar to the situation with Dancing Feet, this is presumably a Santa thing)

He enjoys true crime, spooky stories, and warm weather. Although he's mostly content to go with the flow, he can occasionally react badly to disappointment. When he realised that the three week break where both his parents were home was coming to an end, he got so stressed out at the concept that he repeatedly tried to poison his own head.

Luckily he's immune to his own poison, and these days my partner and I trade off taking him to work with us every now and then, which seems to have helped.

Cat's Chimerical Creations Lore: Dancing Feet

This is Dancing Feet, the Catbird:

He's the youngest of the Bedtime Crew, being born on June 3rd 2024

He was directly inspired by Jerry the Accountant made by @leporellian - he was scooped up and adopted long before I made my move, but he lived in my heart for months afterwards so once I picked up a Scat beanie at the charity shop, I knew at least half of what he would become!

As far as we can tell, Dancing Feet doesn't vocalise - whether that's because he doesn't talk at all, or because he's so young he hasn't learned yet is unclear.

What he does do, as the name might suggest, is dance.

He'll dance to say good morning, he'll dance to say goodnight.

He'll dance on his brother's heads, or on their flanks, and sometimes, to their annoyance, on their faces.

He danced on Nublet's Christmas hat once, and when Nublet airbended him into the air, he danced on the sky instead.

He'll dance on the sofa, on the walls, on the pillows and blankets.

Sometimes he'll dance so long that he falls asleep midstep, and snooze right through the rest of us looking for him and calling his name.

We might find him tucked under the mattress or between the cushions, dead to the world, sleeping peacefully.

His letter to Santa last year was just inky pawprints followed by his name. Santa seemed to know what he'd written, though. I guess it's a Santa thing.

A villain once tried to curse Dancing Feet with that dancing-until-you-die disease. Dancing Feet didn't even realise it was a curse, simply dancing his usual dances until the disease burned itself out.

Cat's Chimerical Creations Lore: Nublet

This is Nublet the Walking Fish:

When he was very small, he was travelling with his mummy when they were caught in a flash flood. While Mumsivore managed to get Nublet onto a floating piece of driftwood, a huge wave struck before she was able to climb aboard herself and the two were swept away and seperated.

Nublet floated for many days and many nights, eventually washing ashore on a stony beach in the Isle of Man. He was hungry, cold, wet, and missing his mummy terribly. He gripped his back toes with his front paws, curled himself into a tight ball, and began to roll.

He rolled and he rolled and he rolled, and finally he bumped up against a plain white door with a peeling-paint doorstep, which is where we found him.

He arrived in November, just as our household was switching over from watching horror movies and getting cozy to celebrate Halloween, to watching horror movies and getting cozy to celebrate Christmas.

Nublet's big blue eyes drank in the twinkling lights and shimmering tinsel, the televised gore, the heaped mounds of plushie brothers and sisters crowding the back of the sofa and tumbling down to lay amidst the cushions.

He was invited to a sleepover by some of his brothers, but misunderstood when someone told him sleepovers weren't for sleeping and tried to stay awake forever. Luckily Chimble and Chomble, the two headed pigs that love nothing more than snoozing, were able to teach him their Sleeping Ways.

Minty the Minotaur, self-appointed Spookums King, explained horror movies and all things Spooky to him. Nublet decided he would be a Spookums King aswell, and after a brief moment of "woeing" over the loss of his power, Minty agreed this would be fine.

When January came and the Christmas decorations were packed away, Nublet became very upset. We gave him a piece of emotional support tinsel to tide him over until the season returned, which he held onto for a long time. These days it mostly stays inside Fattiyeti's suitcase, but Nublet does get it out occasionally when he's feeling bad.

We figured from his wings that Nublet would probably be able to fly once he got older, but were suprised to learn that he was also an airbender. When watching the Legend of Aang, Nublet casually mentioned "I can do that" and proceeded to airbend a few of his brothers off the couch.

Nublet enjoys being taken on trips to Spookums Places (even if he does have to stop Minty from putting "lies" in witch bottles every time they go to a churchyard together), cuddling with his brothers and wearing his Christmas hat at all times.

Cat's Chimerical Creations Lore: Minty

This is Minty the Minotaur:

Minty was the first ever Scrapbag Baby, i.e. a plushie made entirely from the leftover bits of other Chimerical Creations. He's also the first one to be born on a Tuesday.

Minty was born without the use of his back legs (I suspect because I messed up restuffing his donor body before he was born).

However, according to his personal Minty Canon, he did originally have full use of all four limbs and was in fact a renowned high speed runner.

One day he bumped into a dragon while out for a sprint, and the dragon put a curse on him that rendered him paraplegic.

Minty claims that his curse can be removed if he is given one hundred shark brothers, and also if all dragons would die.

He also claims that he used to own the Bison Steve Hotel in Fallout, but that Bison Steve stole it from him after the dragon curse. For this reason, he would also like Bison Steve to die.

When he was very young, he was badly scared by an advert for Schlage locks which was far too frightening for his taste. As a result, he decided to elect himself the Spookums King, so he could control all scary things and sentence all Schlage locks to die.

In December 2020, he became a joint Spookums Co-King with his younger brother Nublet, which tempered his tyranical rule somewhat (Nublet being more focused on spooky films and rainy days as opposed to just using his platform for murder)

He was involved in a (one-sided) blood feud with Santa Claus, but as of Christmas 2024, the two have reconciled.

His prize possessions are a blu-ray edition of Boardwalk Empire (which he enjoys guarding from anyone else and curling up on to sleep, not unlike a dragon...) and his bow, which was infused with Christmas Magic on 25/12/24 and allows him to float when he does good deeds.

He once invited Phil Collins to a sleepover. Though his arrival was initially delayed due to bad weather, Phil did manage to attend. They had a very nice time, but Minty eventually got bored of poor Phil.

At one point, Minty was also very impressed by meeting various Pacific Rim kaiju though, much like with Phil Collins, he tired of them once the shine of their "fame" wore off.

(the Pacific Rim kaiju, being kaiju with no concept of fame, were unaffected by this and bemused by Minty's starstruck fawning)

Minty enjoys "doughnut parties" (which is him eating doughnuts while dancing and singing "doughnut party!" over and over again), being "everyone's favourite", telling lies, doing crime, and "woeing", which is when he sighs dramatically and throws himself about in order to get attention.

On June 9 2023, which was declared a public holiday because it was Tynwald Day Minty is so great, we celebrated his 3rd birthday:
