You know it’s funny, in all the AUs I’ve read I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone actually make Buck an entomologist, and that really would be perfect. If anyone knows of one, please send it my way. Otherwise, will be rotating and polishing in my mind a CSI au where Buck is a forensic entomologist (who also dabbles in a lot of stuff), and because I’m a GSR shipper I’m giving Tommy that “I took away the only person she ever loved, so now she’s doing the same thing to me” line because duh.

I got an angry anon/bot(?) asking about this post, and I had been meaning to think about it some more. Since I wasn't going to get any interesting conversation from that ask... let's do it here.

Season 7 Episode 6 - Buck learns that Tommy was engaged to Abby while closeted, and he gets upset about this. Josh tells Buck that he has no right to judge Tommy because according to Josh, Buck came up in a "post-Glee world" and doesn't understand the struggles of "those who came before [him]."

Josh's lecture is weird to me for two reasons:

Josh implies that Tommy is a "queer elder" to Buck

Josh implies that a "post-Glee world" is so radically different for queer people

Together, meaning, there's a vast gulf between Buck and Tommy's experiences of queerness. Buck should stop complaining about things he doesn't understand.

A generation of North American queer men were nearly wiped out by the AIDS crisis in the 80s, so sadly, yeah, Tommy is a queer elder. Even though, given that Tommy is in his early 40s in season 7, he is probably a millennial. But is he Buck's elder? Of incomprehensibly different experience? He's a decade and change older than Buck, but Buck is in his 30s. Buck has just come out, but he is still an adult who's experienced queer attraction all his life, and lived through a lot of the same years Tommy has.

The 2000s and 2010s were a kind of watershed for gay legal rights in North America and Europe, but we're kidding ourselves if we think gay marriage, or Glee, has fixed homophobia. The Pulse Nightclub shooting was in 2016, and you only need to look at the state of America now.

Growing up, Buck has experienced a homophobic mainstream America just as Josh and Tommy have. "Gay" was still a common playground insult in the 2000s. Buck, like Tommy, like the rest of the adult characters of 911, grew up in heteronormative USA where homophobia/queerphobia has never gone away - after all, there's a reason why it never occurred to Buck that he might be attracted to men before meeting Tommy (comphet anyone?).

And if you really want to split hairs... assuming the 911 seasons map onto the years of their production, season 1 happened in 2016-2017. Meaning, Tommy and Abby were engaged post-inception of Glee, you know, when homophobia was over.

Even if your feelings/fears are valid, lying to your partner, and forming a romantic commitment under false pretenses is just a shitty thing to do. Tommy likely had understandable reasons we can sympathize with, but it was still unfair to Abby, for Tommy to string her along in order to try and protect his cishet man status. It's the 2010s, maybe Tommy was still working under shitstain Gerard, but he probably wouldn't have been stoned out of LA for not getting engaged to a woman.

Buck learned that Tommy lied to and hurt someone he loved in a major way. Him feeling upset over that is also understandable.

The writers were probably trying to make a point about how older and younger queers have different experiences--which is very true, and deserves to be said. BUT I think using Tommy and Buck to make this point, in this particular way, doesn't quite work.

If anyone else wants to chime in on this 911 moment that only me and like, two other people seem to care about, please do! I'm always down to learn more.

Coming to terms with the fact that Buck’s best friend barely even likes him anymore and damn sure doesn’t respect him and that will never be treated like the tragedy it is or even confronted at all has been a 24-hour grieving process.
