...I often forget that I have the ability to affect others.

There's a memory box that sits in a drawer underneath my wardrobe. It's filled with items that would have little significance to a stranger - receipts covered in doodles, unused dnd dice, a mini camera figurine. Each object a representation of a person I loved and who changed me for the better.

But the most important of these things will always be the letters.

My best friend says she loves karaoke because of the times we sang together. My younger cousins misses playing minecraft with me. An old classmate tells me I helped her feel less lonely.

And overwhelmed with love, I have to cry. Because I find it so hard to believe that I not only affect peoples lives, but maybe, I even do so positively. That if I wasn't here, I might be missed.

Hazbin Hotel, Helluva Boss, and Maturing

A small reflection

I would like to preface this post by acknowledging that I am a long-term fan of both works aforementioned in the title. If you want proof, just take a look at the majority of my blog posts!

Furthermore, I am NOT condoning or encouraging minors to watch or engage with these shows. This is simply a reflection of my own - and I'm sure many others - experience with the Hellaverse.

It is not controversial to accuse Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss of being chock full of writing flaws. The most common ones are:

Inadequately set-up threats

Pacing + tone issues

Surface-level character development (especially for females).

That's not to mention the dozens of videos analyzing Viziepop character design...

But to a 14-year-old me, these critiques were far from my mind when I watched "Murder Family" in October of 2020. The unapologetic edginess of the episode was something I had never experienced before. It felt rebellious.

I bring this up all to say, that these shows are appealing to younger audiences in a way other adult animation is not. I'm sure you already know this - The amount of young teens in the fandom is hard to miss!

And after years of rewatching episodes, creating theories, engaging with fanart and so... SO much fanfiction. I've finally realized why this may be the case.

It is BECAUSE of these writing flaws, and BECAUSE of these one-note characters, that younger audiences gravitate to the show. Alastor was first created when Viziepop was 16 for goodness sake.

The lack of nuance within the writing, as well as the cartoony exaggeration (all while trying to make you feel it is deep), is quite appealing to minds that don't engage with media critically.

This is not to say older audiences can't enjoy the shows. I still adore them. But I would argue that a majority of the character complexity and development I witnessed over the years did not come from Viziepops original works...

This depth was instead created by the older members of the fandom and the fanworks they have produced, not Viziepop herself.

If you do not believe me. I would request you to pick your favorite Hellaverse character (I personally think Lucifer is a great example). Evaluate what you love about their depth, inner-workings, development, and motivation.

Now list exactly when or where the original works imply these traits, and what has been expanded upon or created by secondary sources.

You may find, like I did, that the originals are quite lacking.

The Vees Tower contains motifs inspired by all of it's members.

It could be Valentinos hearts, but his moth wings are present in the decorations above. I like to believe this version of the V symbol is a nod to Alastors cloven hooves instead.

Vox was so sure he would say yes after all.

Picture me this - Lucifer's angelic powers of creation have the ability to breathe life into whatever he desires. Not as strongly as his Father, of course. But just enough for his snake and little creatures such as Razzle or Dazzle.

However, it's not always purposeful. There's a Sins meeting. Asmodeus and Mammon have been arguing for the most part of an hour, and everyone's patience is thoroughly worn. The pair refuse to listen to any peaceful mediator... Lucifer decides he's had enough. He bangs his fist against the table in an effort to get their attention- it works! He opens his mouth and-

An awful loud creaking sound emanates from the wood - Next thing the Sins know, a piece of furniture is tossing them about like a bull seeing red.

((I just think it would be really funny if Lucifer accidentally gave objects life when he's feeling strongly agagagga))

God, he had a bone to pick with Lucifer before he even met him-

I love all of the radioapple pieces that surround Lucifer and his many rubber ducks.

Maybe Alastor animates them with magic and uses them as inconspicuous tools for mischief. Such as sneaking cayenne pepper powder into Lucifer's pancake batter when he's not looking.

Lucifer throws rubber ducks at Alastor to shut him up.

It actually worked for the first few times too, because it was so random that it caught him off guard, as very few things do. With his large collection and how very few of his creations he was actually proud of, Lucifer had a lot of ammunition. He wasn’t about to embarrass himself by scrambling to get them back afterwards, but he did wonder what happened to them. Incinerated, he would guess.

But no, Alastor likes entertainment, and after he got over the fact the literal King of Hell’s best line of defense was rubber ducks, he was very entertained by the little things. There was a growing collection in his radio tower, and he had learned quickly that there was more to them than met the eye. He’d been quite displeased when one had left his coat singed from spitting fire, but despite all their tricks, none were particularly harmful.

Alastor hadn’t been sure where these ducks were coming from, but after plucking one off the floor that had a remarkable resemblance to the Radio Demon himself, he was beginning to suspect they weren’t exactly off the shelf. And wasn’t that a thought, the devil himself spending hours meticulously crafting toys. Even more so interesting that he spent some of that time making one of a demon he hated so much. But he keeps them all the same.

Chucking them at Alastor’s head becomes a whole lot less effective at getting him to shut the fuck up after a while. That didn’t stop Lucifer from wanting to throw things at him, and it wasn’t destructive to the hotel in the process. Probably not a bad thing, to be clearing out his room of so many ducks. And if a certain gothic tower is now full of them instead, well… who’s to say.

*quack quack* I’m losing my mind, can you tell

I like to think Lucifer's arms weren't always black.

I like to imagine when he fell from Heaven, he didn't go without a fight.

Plummeting towards hell, he caught a spear of angelic steel aimed at his heart. Naturally, the holy energy imbued in the metal cannot destroy him as it would a hellborn or sinner, yet it still reacts with the seraphim's growing devilish nature.

With a mighty crack, the spear seared the arms which held it. Blackening the flesh.

Maybe Lucifer can't hide the mark, Heavens way of warning others of his fallen nature, despite the rest of his visage.

Maybe he chooses to keep the scar, a reminder of what was done to him. A reminder that Heaven, despite its vast power, could not destroy him.

Or at least that's what I like to imagine.

When I first saw the Hazbin Hotel pilot, I knew Alastor would rise to the ranks of Tumblr Sexyman.

And I knew that he was going to be shipped every which way possible, but-

I DIDN'T EXPECT HIM TO BE THE FANDOMS DESIGNATED DOMMY POPPY?

I took one look at those little dear ears and wasp waist and thought- Oh! They are going to ruin him.

BUT APPARENTLY NOT?? Because EVERY other male character introduced has somehow managed to be MORE BABY GIRL???

He probably would too.
