This poem was inspired by a behavioral study on hermit crabs that showed they don’t only react to pain like a reflex. They weigh their options.
In the experiment, hermit crabs were given small electric shocks inside their shells. Some left quickly, but others endured the shock if the shell was high-quality, and/or if they sensed the scent of a predator nearby. The better the shell, the more they didn't want to abandon it.
Scientists concluded that hermit crabs can remember pain and make decisions that balance safety, comfort, and risk—pointing toward a form of consciousness we don’t usually attribute to them (ScienceDaily article).
When I was a kid (10), I had a hermit crab as a pet. I thought it was a simple-minded creature. I thought they were more independent and lived short lives. I didn’t realize how much longer they can live in the wild compared to captivity, or that they had needs I didn’t understand. Mine died too soon, and I didn't realize it was gone. Only later did I recognize how little I had grasped about its life.
Sometimes things are more complex than we realize when we're ignorant.

The Enchiridion
In the popular cartoon series Adventure Time (a personal favorite), the Enchiridion is a legendary book of heroism which contains codes of conduct, moral guidance, and tests for heroes.
In reality, the Enchiridion is a book of stoic philosophy compiled by Arrian, a student of Epictetus around the 2nd century CE. It's basically a practical guide to living well with a foundation on how to think, act, and respond to events in ways that lead to inner peace and freedom. This book focuses on core aspects, like control and acceptance, judgement over events, and facing hardships in life.
"Enchiridion" translates to "handbook" or "manual."
I've always loved the concept of this book in Adventure Time, but I loved learning that it has an epic foundation in our reality.
It's incredible how relatable much of the context is nearly 1,900 years later.

Bravery cannot exist without fear.
Fear is instinct. Bravery is choice.
One we feel. One we become.

I know I said this earlier, but I love your work 😭
I have a fork and knife of steel
I can eat all that I feel
I'll kill it off and lick the plate
I accept my sorry fate
The bitter taste I'll swallow, brave
Another soul no one can save
I know the price, I'll pay in kind
A future now I have defined
Tea leaves read, die is cast
I know nothing's meant to last
A bubble floating in the air
Iridescent in despair
Skeletal and starving too
Limbs have snapped where once I grew
A shadow, somber, on the ground
Here I fall, without a sound

A poem about
grief,
confusion,
processing memories,
longing,
and acceptance,
when two people can't speak.

There was a double rainbow last month.
The sight inspired a poem in me.
I've been hesitant to post it.

Worms have no concept of recursive self-referential processing across temporal domains necessary to contextualize their behavior within a coherent autobiographical framework, nor the working memory-bound reflective function involved in modulating affective valence across transdiagnostic threat-sensitivity dimensions; in fact, they appear to operate within a persistently egocentric perceptual field, devoid of intersubjective attunement and are fundamentally unaware of the self-reinforcing nature of their own behavioral myopia.
But I love them anyway.
