Darkship

warning — i can't guarantee the truthfulness of this one, because an article appear heavily edited, begins with emojis heavily used on tiktok and avoids actual fandom terms. beware!

In fandom, dark had previously been used as a modifier on character names to describe a canon or fanon AU "dark" version of the character. The label 'darkship' is applied to the ship in its entirety, regardless of whether the dark themes that inspired the label are necessarily present in the characters' relationship dynamics in the canon.

On Tumblr, "darkship" appears to have been in use since at least 2013. A Jack Frost/Pitch Black fanart post contains the plea "COME TO MY DARKSHIP TOO!!!!! >D"

On fail_fandomanon, the term appears as early as 2014, but appears more frequently starting in 2020.

Comship

Comship is a fannish term that was coined as an alternative to the existing term proship. Comship is short for "complicated ship" or "complex ship". According to Urban Dictionary, the comship label is used by "those who have complicated feelings" about shipping discourse. Opinion is divided on whether "comship" and "proship" have the same meaning (or what either term means).

Incest (Shipcest)

A pro-shipper

In the 2020s, profic is occasionally used on twitter as a synonym of proship.

Pro-ship culture is being incredibly disappointed in other pro-shippers when they stigmatize and misuse the definition of paraphilias too, despite almost all paraphiles, even the incredibly stigmatized ones, Also being trauma survivors and Also not acting on their sexual arousal in reality but rather through kink/roleplay and fiction. It's the same argument antis make towards proshippers in general, just against a group of people with a genuine neurodiversity (paraphilias are linked to neurobiological differences in the parts of the brain associated with sexual development due to a mix of biological and external factors, they're no different than something like PTSD or OCD on a psychiatric or medical/biological level) instead. As an example, everyone stop calling child predators pedophiles immediately challenge. Most child predators do not actually fit the DSM-5 or other diagnostic criteria of a pedophile and most people who do fit that criteria never actually act on their paraphilia in reality and cope with their paraphilia via fiction or roleplay with other adults. Words mean things, and using "child predator" interchangeably with "pedophile" is in fact harmful to most victims, because 1) a lot of people who develop pedophilia do so as a direct consequence of being a victim of CSA/CSE themselves, studies show this to be the case for around half of people with the paraphilia tho it's likely this number is much higher as studies regarding the topic do not tend to have appropriately vast sample sizes due to people understandably not wanting to share that they have the paraphilia in the first place based on stigmatization 2) associating the paraphilia with child predation instead of the act of child predation itself retracts from the seriousness and existence of the majority of predators who commit these crimes without actually being pedophiles (most sex crimes, including child sex crimes, are more about fulfilling a power fantasy than a sexual fantasy, and paraphilias are diagnosed based on sexual arousal specifically,) and misleads people on what signs of predation actually look like if they aren't attached to arousal which in turn leads to abuse going unnoticed more often and 3) makes it easier for abusers to make their victims feel ashamed of coming forward based on societal stigma and shame regarding involuntary arousal when it is experienced, ESPECIALLY if that victim developes a related paraphilia to their trauma. How many people developed pedophilia as a result of being abused and then were so ashamed of their involuntary arousal to the same thing they suffered from that they never sought consequences for their abuser out of fear of facing consequences themselves just for living with a result of their trauma? How long are we going to keep letting this happen despite multiple studies demonstrating how harmful this rhetoric is to victims as a whole? Why do some of you think you're better than other victims acting in the same ways that you are just because you didn't develop a genuine and recognized neurodiversity? This goes for all paraphilias too, stop calling people predators for anything less than actually preying on others.
