Video
shelikespictures:
A short film called “Skwerl”. They use a gibberish language that has a mixture of both English words and sounds; so now us English speakers can get a sense of what our language sounds like to foreigners. I’ve always wondered this, since I travel to a lot of different countries where English isn’t widely spoken. It’s actually kind of pretty.

Sociolinguistics and Discourse Analysis
What is Sociolinguistics? Language, Variety and Change. 3 Simple words!
Language, what we use to communicate verbally. Our society is built with this fantastic method of communication!
Variety, you speak English? British English or American or...? England English..Yorkshire English..... Leeds Yorkshire English. "I don't have an accent" eh yes you do!
Change, you spoke with an English accent when you were 5 but now you have an American one and you are now 17. How are you/How art thou/Hū gǣþ hit þē.
How does language affect society and the individual? How can we tell someone's age, gender, style, social class and place of origin from their accent. How does language change in society and the individual, through a life time or through generations. These are some of the questions that sociolinguistics answer.
Discourse Analysis
Language beyond the sentence. Spoken discourse and Written discourse. Looking at how language and context are inseparable. How language is made up of patterns which is how we remember everything we say.
How we remember our lexicon, how we understand each other and produce utterances. How personal relations and context change the language we use. How vocabulary strings together, word associations.
This is what discourse analysis deals with, and many more.
This is what I'm studying at Aberdeen University
