why are all these modern aus for the Odyssey set in a high school. where's the retelling where Odysseus is just a guy lost in an airport who keeps missing his connecting flights home due to a comical series of delays and disgruntled airline employees

Random linguistic worldbuilding: A language with six sets of pronouns, which are set by one's current state of existence. There's a separate pronoun for people who are alive, people who are dead, and potential future people who are yet to be born, and the ambiguous ones of "may or may not be alive or aleady dead", "may or may not have even been born yet", and the ultimate general/ambiguous all-covering one that covers all ambiguous states.

The culture has a specific defined term for that tragic span of time when a widow keeps accidentally referring to their spouse with living pronouns. New parents-to-be dropping the happy surprise news of a pregnancy by referring to their future child with the "is yet to be born" pronoun instead of a more ambiguous one and waiting for the "wait what did you just say?" reactions.

Someone jokingly referring to themselves with the dead person pronouns just to highlight how horrible their current hangover is. A notorious aspiring ladies' man who keeps trying to pursue women in their 20s despite of approaching middle age fails to notice the insult when someone asks him when he's planning to get married, and uses the pronoun that implies that his ideal future bride may not even be born yet.

A mother whose young adult child just moved away from home for the first time, who continues to dramatically refer to their child with "may or may not be already dead" until the aforementioned child replies to her on facebook like "ma stop telling people I'm dead" and having her respond with "well how could I possibly know that when you don't even write to us? >:,C"

There was this guy in the 1800s - I can't remember his name, but his name is recorded somewhere - who honestly argued that if given the choice between a beautiful woman and a heron, deep down in their most earnest true heart, every man would rather fuck the heron. And he got mad when people denied this, continuing to deny this what he had decided must be an universal truth, instead of praising him for being the only one who was brave enough to finally say it out loud. Like he really thought that every single person telling him "Jesse what the hell are you talking about" was not only denying him, but denying themselves their true desires and perpetuating the apparently massive cultural lie that herons aren't fuckable.

Anyway what I'm saying here is that every once in a while whenever you find yourself in a situation where nobody else is willing to agree with something that you consider the most obvious truth, take a moment to meditate on the possibility that perhaps they do mean what they say, and perhaps they are right. Maybe nobody else but you wants to fuck the heron.

theres a short story in the dr who annual 1966 that genuinely unsettled me. so for the first time the doctor lands in a different universe (the crab nebula). all the people in this universe, their form flickers momentarily and he sees them with multiple heads or too many eyes or animal body parts, and seeing these visions cause the doctor to collapse. when he wakes up hes in a lab surrounded by scientists who treat him like hes not sentient and want to dissect him to find out how hes maintaining his form for so long. the doctor ends up speaking to the leader, who tells him that radiation combined with genetic experiments has mutated everybody into this. they have drugs to allow them to stabilise their form but only temporarily, so the doctor is a marvel to them. eventually the scientists and then the leader himself succumb to their transformations, but before he does so he begs the doctor to leave in the tardis and take a briefcase of a hundred test tube embryos with him, so that at least they can be saved. without the radiation, they might have a chance to grow up normal. the doctor makes it to the tardis and finds all of the embryos are already dead. its so fucked up and i cant believe they let this print in an annual for kids but anyway!
