#JackedKirby - Here’s a little ditty, about our guys Jack & Stan.... 💥💥💥 A few weeks back I was perusing the internets when I came across what looked like an independent comic that featured a character that looked pretty familiar. It was black and white... but it was pretty easy to identify who the characters were. I was staring at Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.... and they were the HEROES! 💥💥💥 A did a bit more research and found out that the comic I was reading was called Stan & Jack. It came out of England and was the work if writer/artist @petedoree !!! And man was it awesome... 💥💥💥 I immediately reached out to Pete on Twitter and ordered TWO copies of each issue (issues 1 and 2 are available currently, and i had to pick up a set for my boy @tommylombardozzi of course). He responded briskly and let me know he would be sending them out shortly but the postage from England to NYC had been a bit spotty. I wasn’t worried on how quick they would get here, and a short time later they arrived! 💥💥💥 The books pull Jack and Stan INTO the adventures they created so long ago as the actual protagonists... and the artwork is really great. The humor/conversational style of the books is spectacular. Lots of tongue and cheek moments that make the reading very enjoyable for a true fan of comics like myself. Really well done! 💥💥💥 These books are PACKED from cover to cover with nostalgic goodness, and well worth the 4 bucks a piece! Give Pete some business and order your copies today... he deserves it for putting out this love letter to the co-creators of the Marvel Universe! On a side note, we will be interviewing him on the Jacked Kirby podcast soon... Stay Tuned!!! 💥💥💥 #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #StanAndJack #StanLee #PeteDoree #England #IndyComics #BlackAndWhite #Nostalgic #BuyThisComic #SupportIndyComics #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #IGComics #ComicsOfIG #TheJackedKirbyPodcast #EnglishComics https://www.instagram.com/p/CCs_ktQBB9l/?igshid=12qxtumtykdv

#JackedKirby - Professor X and Martin Luther King... Kirby Style! 💥💥💥 Today we are celebrating Martin Luther King’s birthday 52 years after his untimely assassination so I thought it would be fitting to shine a light on a slight Kirby connection to this great man. When X-Men #Issue1 hit newsstands in September of 1963 (it probably arrived in August) it was right on the heels of the famous “March on Washington” led by MLK. Stan and Jack wanted to do a book that represented the struggle with Civil Rights happening in this country... hence the X-Men! 💥💥💥 The obvious connection to the real world civil rights movement comes in the form of the two mutant leaders in charge of the different groups. Professor X and Magneto. Both wanted to help out their fellow mutants... they just had different philosophies on how to do that. Similar to Martin Luther King and his fellow civil rights activist, Malcolm X. 💥💥💥 Malcolm X and MLK had very different approaches to how they thought equality could be achieved... MLK through a peaceful message of inclusion and Magneto with a more forceful “by any means necessary” approach. These same attitudes are reflected in Professor X and Magento... and considering the origin of the characters in the book it seems intentional on Jack & Stan’s part. 💥💥💥 In honor of MLK today, let’s take a look at an early panel from X-Men #Issue1 (Sept of 1963) where Professor X explains his philosophy to a young Jean Grey. Happy MLK Day everyone... be kind, be thoughtful and treat other how you want to be treated!!! 💥💥💥 #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #XMen #MLK #MartinLutherKing #ProfessorX #StanLee #StanAndJack #MLKDay #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #60sComics #ComicsOfThe60s https://www.instagram.com/p/B7jyNGCBSxf/?igshid=1ebpfszwdgnyv

#JackedKirby - The Devil’s Advocate... 😈😈😈 By the time Jack returned to Marvel in 1975 he had learned a lot from his past 30+ years in the comic industry. And he was determined not to make the same mistakes again. So when he came back and took on Cap/Black Panther/Eternals/Devil Dinosaur and other work he was the writer, artist and had 100% say over what went into the books... and he basically set all of his stories AWAY from the traditional Marvel Universe. This was done to avoid any more “who created what” arguments and things like that... if it was all done by him, how could he NOT get sole credit for every aspect. 😈😈😈 But in 1978 he decided to team up with Stan Lee once again... this time to create an epic 100+ fireside book with one of their greatest creations as the protagonist... The Silver Surfer! Stan and Jack would be back creating a new story featuring the Sentinel of the Spaceways against the Devourer of World’s, Galactus. But before they could “collaborate” again, Jack covered himself on creator credit for a new character that would be appearing for the first time in the Trade Paperback... The Devil’s Advocate!!! 😈😈😈 The Devil’s Advocate is a living embodiment of Galactus’s “bad side”... he is the side of Galactus’s psyche that encourages death and destruction from the planet eater! And Jack made sure from the first character sketch of him he ever drew that he let the world know that he was 100% responsible for the written/drawn version of this character... look at the declaration on the top of Pic 1 in this post for proof!!! 😈😈😈 Pics 2/3 are instances when the character appeared in the actual book. The Devil’s Advocate seems to be exactly represented as Kirby intended in his original creation... just to make sure Uncle Stan didn’t weasel any undeserved credit away from The King on this one!!! 😈😈😈 #JackKirby #KingKirby #TheDevilsAdvocate #Kirby #StanLee #StanAndJack #StanLeeAndJackKirby #TheSilverSurfer #SilverSurfer #Galactus #70sComics #ComicsOfThe70s #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #IGComics #igcomiccommunity #ComicsOfIG #CharacterSketch #PencilSketch #CharacterSheet https://www.instagram.com/p/BsjMLF_BK1f/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ecqujntz3842

#JackedKirby - I Hate Reprinted Re-colorings from The King! 💥💥💥 One of the major drawbacks of reading comics digitally (there are quite a few) is that companies often replace original newsprint comics printed in their OG 4 color styles with slick digitally colored reprinted editions... and it downright sucks! Even though the original art is still spectacular and the story is as great as ever, there is something about the garish recoloring of the pages that takes me right out of it.... 💥💥💥 Take this opening splash page from #Issue170 of The Mighty Thor. Published in November of 1969, we get a beautiful headshot of the Thunder God from Jack inked by comic legend Bill Everett. Pic 1 of this post show you how this page appeared in a he original issue, with the standard style credits along the bottom of the page and the slightly washed out newsprint color that comic aficionados adore. It’s beautiful... and a powerful image considering Thor, the God of Thunder himself, is flabbergasted in fear at whatever he is gazing upon!!! 💥💥💥 In Pic 2 we see the exact same image, except this one comes from a 2015 recolored reprint edition. The bottom page credits are also a bit different, but the heinous thing about the new image has to be the off putting colors and sharpness of the resulting image. The colors (especially the blue background and yellow of Thor’s luscious locks) are way to pronounced.... and the perfect texture of the title bar makes it seem to clean. I hate it. And I’m not sure exactly why... 💥💥💥 Just something about that flat matte coloring and slightly black infused tint of the old style pages that made them a bit more beautiful. The new reprints are ok... but far to sharp and slick for my likings. Give me the old newsprint any day of the week... and TWICE ON SUNDAY!!! 💥💥💥 #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #Thor #TheMightyThor #BillEverett #StanAndJack #RecoloredReprints #60sComics #ComicsOfThe60s #Comic #ComicBook #Comics #ComicBooks #igcomicfamily #igcomiccommunity #igcomicbookcommunity #ComicsOfIG #ComicsOfInstagram #KirbySplashPage #SplashPage https://www.instagram.com/p/BrDCEVRBeqe/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=qyuzwntr3xic

#JackedKirby - A Fan letter from a future Marvel Legend... 💥💥💥 Back in 1963 the Fantastic Four was chugging along at the head of the Marvel line of comics. The flagship title was being commandeered by Jack and Stan towards the top of the sales charts, but not everyone who was reading it was 100% satisfied with the finished product! Case in point a certain letter that was published in #Issue19 from October of 1963. 💥💥💥 The letter totally rips the Dream Team did their inconsistencies in storytelling and filler issues... and it takes particular exceptions with #Issue13 published in April of 1963. It came from the mind of a 16 year old Steve Gerber... the same Steve Gerber who would go onto create Howard the Duck for Marvel in 1973!!! 💥💥💥 The letter isn’t wrong... frankly he hits the nail on the head more then a few times. Even though my opinion of “The Run” (Jack & Stan’s 102 Issue run on the FF) is high there are some clunkers in there... and #Issue14 isn’t their best work! I love his ripping of the cover and all the blurbs... we get it, it’s all so important!!! (See pic 2) I am especially shocked at Gerber ripping the team up of Kirby and Ditko on this book... Ditko inked Kirby’s pencils. I think they are really good, and always like Ditko inking Kirby. See the third pic and make the decision for yourself!!! You also gotta love Stan’s snarky remarks in his response... typical Stanley Lieber laying it on thick!!!! 💥💥💥 The irony here is that when Gerber would eventually get into a legal battle with Marvel over the rights to the character Kirby would step up to help him. They collaborated on a few issues of Destroyer Duck to raise money for Gerber’s “Defense Fund” in battling Marvel!!! I wonder if the two ever discussed Gerber’s scathing letter from his teen years!!! 💥💥💥 #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #SteveDitko #StanAndJack #TheRun #FF #FantasticFour #SteveGerber #LettersPage #60sComics #ComicsOfThe60s #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #igcomiccommunity #igcomicfamily #igcomics #comicsofig #comicsofinstagram

#JackedKirby - Anyone know the way to Asgard's Museum of Weaponry? Part 1: Journey Into Mystery was a big success, mostly because the anthology book began to feature Thor quite regularly. In October of 1965 the comic got its first oversize annual. Soon after this the book would turn into The Mighty Thor series. Like most annuals Marvel was producing at the time this issue was oversized... 72 pages to be exact! The issue featured a new Thor tale and marked the first appearance of Hercules in the Marvel Universe. The Norse Thunder God takes on the Greek Demigod in a showdown for the ages! The issue was also loaded up with a bunch of reprinted past Thor stories. One of the cool things Jack and Stan about these annuals were the little extras... like in this one they produced a walking map of Asgard! If you were on a tour of the magical city this would outline the whole place for ya! It even has friendly guide tags (The Temple of Titan, The Tree of Life, etc) so you know what tourist spots to hit! This is the left side of the two page splash. Another amazing innovation and bonus for choosing Marvel! #JackKirby #Kirby #KingKirby #Thor #JourneyIntoMystery #Annual #Marvel #Hercules #Loki #Asgard #MapOfAsgard #StanAndJack #BonusFeature #AdditionalMaterial #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #60sComics #ComicsOfThe60s #IGComics #ComicsOfIG #comicsofinstagram #KirbyAsgard

#JackedKirby - Now that is how one does a splash page! I don't often like to do back to back posts on the same character, but I came across this beauty and couldn't sit on it one more second! This interior splash comes from Thor #Issue159 which was published in December of 1968. It takes place during this story in which Donald Blake truly finds out the origin of his existence. Thor is stuck in his human form (Donald Blake) and needs answers... answers he can only get on Asgard. Since he can't transform and travel their himself, he decides to enter a deep meditation and hopefully trigger some latent memories that will better explain his backstory. This panel is in that phase of sleep where you begin to doze off and can be mentally transported anywhere... and the Donald Blake lying in bed/spiritual Thor flying through space dichotomy is awesome! Another great full page splash from the King! #JackKirby #Kirby #KingKirby #Thor #TheMightyThor #Odin #Zeus #Asgard #Origin #StanAndJack #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #ComicsOfIG #IGComics #60sComics #ComicsOfThe60s #SplashPage #KirbySplash #CosmicKirby

#JackedKirby - Jack and Stan. Although I love me some Jack Kirby and have long taken his side against the Marvel (and Stan for that manner), I am not an absolutist. I do not HATE Stan, nor do I hate Marvel for what they did with Jack because it was business... it is what it is. But yesterday was Stan's 94th bday. He deserves some shine here too... Jack and Stan may not have always been the best of friends, but there works together changed comics forever. And by default there work is now changing the landscape of movies, TV and many other mediums as well. The Fantastic Four, The Avengers, Dr Doom, Hulk, Thor, The X-Men... the contributions are too plentiful to name. So today, we say thank you to Stan the Man. Forget the bullshit, forget the controversy... think of all the good these guys did together! To happier times! Happy 94th Stan... and to many, many more! #JackKirby #Kirby #KingKirby #StanLee #HappyBirthday #StanAndJack #Marvel #94thBirthday

#JackedKirby - Check Out My Wild Bill Robot!!!! If you haven't had a chance to check out the Stan Lee/Jack Kirby S.H.I.E.L.D. run in Strange Tales #Issue135-150 you need to do so ASAP!!! There is so much vibrant imagery and overall technological wackiness in these 15 issues that it can't be contained!!! Take this opening splash from #Issue142 which was published in March of 1966. In the image we see a 7 foot tall death machine robot brandishing two hand canons... and he belongs to the good guys!!! He is SHIELD's "Wild Bill Robot" and the gang in the lab are trying to figure out how to use him effectively without him doing his own team any harm!!! But even though the robot is captivating and another example of Jack's mastery over technology in his art... it's not the most interesting thing on the page. Nope... that would be the arrow text box on the bottom of the page... "To give you an example of our generosity, this robot isn't even important to our YARN! We just tossed it in as an added extra for you!" That is amazing. So you are on the first page of the issue, you are marveling at this insane robotic creation blasting the hell out of the page... and the editorial staff is TELLING you straight up this has nothing to do with the story and it's just a bonus! Lol... they new they had it like that, and weren't afraid to advertise it in the work! The fact that Jack would work on a page so intricate (two pages actually) that has no bearing on the overall story speaks to his level of talent... it was NOTHING to him. Not only did he complete it... he killed it!!! So great. I can't recommend this run enough.... some of Jack's best tech work!!! #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #SHIELD #agentsofshield #Hydra #WildBill #Robots #KirbyRobots #KirbyTech #StrangeTales #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #60scomics #ComicsOfThe60s #ComicsOfIG #igcomics #comicsofinstagram #igcomicscommunity #IGComicCommunity #technology #StanAndJack #StanLee
