Why not write an original black character who does amazing stuff instead of forcing an established white character to be black?

I’m guessing your referring to Annabeth? To be fair, she was never described as “white.” It was a “deep tan”. And I could make the same argument for Percy. Why not create original blonde characters Instead of forcing an established black-hair character to be blonde?

In all seriousness though, if you’re bothered by Annabeth being black, that’s on you. Of course you’re allowed to think what you want. All I ask (and I’m not saying you’ve done this, because I don’t know who you are) but leave the little girl playing Annabeth alone. She’s a kid playing an incredibly wonderful character that little girls have looked up to for years. And I can’t wait to see what she brings to the role 😁

Whump Prompt #1000

Give me the messy rescues. Not necessarily plot-wise but in the sense that the whumpee doesn’t pass out, there’s no quiet moments or vigils, and there’s no serenity of the whumpee finally sleeping. It’s loud, it’s exhausting and it’s messy. The whumpee is coughing up blood, sweating, bleeding over everything, and rambling and feverish and trying everything they can to help. There’s rubble everywhere, burnt clothes coming off in tatters and bloodied bandages unravelled and sticking to everything. This only echoes the chaos of the crew around them. 

The caretakers keep them awake instead of trying to stifle it, because at least the whumpee is awake and semi-lucid. At least the whumpee is breathing; even if it’s laboured and wheezy and haggard. At least the whumpee is talking; even if its nonsensical and bordering on hysterical.

Last night my mom and dad and I were watching a show called The Black List and the whole episode a character was being brutally tortured and mom was like, “oh this is horrible, I just want this episode to be over,” and I was like “oh yeah I so agree.” But INSIDE I was like

The whumpee is in a plane crash?

Okay

He’s a young man, 18-19 years old. And he’s smart. Really high IQ. Goes to Harvard or Yale or something like that. He comes from a big family that argues and yells and just generally doesn’t get along. ESPECIALLY between him and his oldest brother.

He’s flying home to visit his family. Maybe one of his siblings, the youngest one (whom he adores) calls him and tells him they miss him. So he hops on a plane.

And right as they’re descending, something goes wrong. An engine fail. They’re too close to the ground for the pilot to correct it. The place crashes. Half the people on board don’t survive. He does, though. With severe injuries.

He’s in a wheelchair, multiple broken bones and internal injuries. He can’t take care of himself. At least not for a while. He has to rely on his family. Who now realize that holy shit. We almost lost our brother. And his oldest brother? The one who hates him? Well guess who stepped up to take care of him the most.

He recovers and is now TERRIFIED of getting on a plane again. And also. Because he missed so much school, he’s out. He has to move back home with his parents.

And everything is different now. They’re kind to each other and the siblings behave because now life is fragile and everything can change in a moment. And he won’t admit it, but he almost misses the way things were before.

Can you tell me why Frodo is so important in lotr? Why can't someone else, anyone else, carry the ring to mordor?

but someone else could.

that’s the whole point of frodo—there is nothing special about him, he’s a hobbit, he’s short and likes stories, smokes pipeweed and makes mischief, he’s a young man like other young men, except for the singularly important fact that he is the one who volunteers. there is this terrible thing that must be done, the magnitude of which no one fully understands and can never understand before it is done, but frodo says me and frodo says I will.

(when boromir is thinking of how he can use the ring to defend gondor, when aragorn is thinking of how it brought down proud isildur, when elrond is holding council and gandalf is thinking of how twisted he would become, if he ever dared—)

but then there’s frodo, who desires nothing except what he has already left behind him, and says, I will take the Ring.

it is an offer made out of absolute innocence, utter sincerity. It is made without knowing what it will make of him—and frodo loses everything to the ring, he loses peace and himself and the shire, he loses the ability to be in the world. It’s cruel, the ring is cruel, it searches out every weakness you have and feeds on it, drinks you dry and fills you with its poison instead, the ring is so cruel.

and frodo picks it up willingly. for no other reason except that it has to be done.

(the ring warps boromir into a hopeless grasping dead thing, the power of the palantir turns denethor into an old man, jealous and suspicious, it bends even saruman, once the proudest of the istari, into a mechanised warlord, sitting in his fortress and bent over his perverse creations—all the best of intentions, laid waste)

but there’s a reason gollum exists in the narrative, which is to show—well, to show what frodo might have been. because even as frodo grows mistrustful and wearied, as the burden of this ring grows heavier and heavier, he is never gollum. he is gentle to gollum. he is afraid—god frodo is so afraid for 2/3 of these books he is so tired and afraid, but he keeps moving, he walks though it would pull him into the ground, because he asked for this, he said he would.

someone else could have carried the ring to mordor, I suppose. the idea of a martyr is not dependent on the particular flesh and blood person dying for some greater purpose. but such a thing has to be chosen, lifted onto your shoulders for the right reason, the truest reasons, and followed into the dark, though it would see you burnt through and bled out.

I will take the Ring, though I do not know the way.
