That is basically an essay why I love the Heartstopper:

I hear that they have an unrealistic amount of queer people a lot. That is bullshit the friendgroup is spread in between different schools and grades in the end it’s maybe two queer people per grade, that is not unrealistic.

As someone who has personal experience I seldom see a piece of media that pictures eating disorders this way. It‘s often romanticized, a skinny girl that forces herself to eat to lose weight or only the worst cases are shown when most of the time the people around you don’t even realize there is something wrong. Also that Ed’s are not only rooted in body image issues but in cases also a need to control. On top of that while they showed the treatment they never showed how much he really ate or how much he weighs. Often filmmakers try to make their point how bad the character is by showing this stuff. This can be extremely triggering ! I know people who got tricks to unhealthily lose weight from movies.

I think everybody knows how much the queer characterization was needed in this way so I won’t go into that, but I still wanna share my love for the aroace representation.

So this is basically just a shoutout to Alice and the directors for knowing their target group and their problems

I see a lot of boomers and karens getting annoyed by the whole labels thing. Like „I‘m NoT hOmOpHoBiC but I don‘t think everyone needs their own label just to be SpEcIaL, don‘t you know yourself without a label.“

And as someone who identifies as queer but doesn‘t wanna label I still think labels especially the „rare“ ones are important.

Everybody, queer or not, should know that sexuality and gender identity is fluid. A person can have multiple labels over the years or at once. But why labeling then ? Many queer people grow up thinking their different, wrong or don‘t belong and feel incredible alone. As acceptance of gay, lesbian and even trans people grew, there were still people who didn‘t fit in either group. If you were gay you were part of the community but they still didn‘t belong anywhere. For example an aroace person who never heard of that term doesn‘t feel attracted to anyone, they’re not „normal“ and not „even gay“. Finding out there are other people like you and you‘re not wrong or sick can make your life a whole lot better.

labels give you a sense of identity and belonging that so many people are missing.
