For six years and ten months, I have been a supervisor at Los Angeles County Central Juvenile Hall--around a third of my adult life, and my longest tenure in one workplace. I hadn't wanted a daughter. I had done so much dirt in my lifetime that I was sure God would return the heartache. Yet in His infinite wisdom, He gave me someone that has given me more balance than any person I ever knew. It was June 6th, 1998...the sixth month, the sixth day...and I made nervous jokes about the Antichrist while her mother was in labor early that morning. She was born perfect. Her mother shed tears;she was her first and only girl. She is beautiful, intelligent, and completely unique. She walks to the beat of her own drum. I believe that I could not fully understand the love of God for me without having had her. She changed my life. The 48 Laws of Power is one of my favorite secular books. One of my favorite laws is the 10th, which reads, "Infection: avoid the unhappy and the unlucky." There are people who are never happy...constantly negative, constantly complaining, no joy whatsoever in work or family or pleasure. These people must be avoided like the plague. Negativity is contagious, and it limits power and success. The same goes for perpetually unlucky people. For whatever reason, bad stuff just follows them around. I don't mean spousal issues or money troubles--everyone has those. I mean trouble with the law, issues with seedy characters, murders and deaths. These people must ALSO be avoided, lest their corrupt karma fall on you. Happiness and peace of mind are powerful.
