with love. you have to fact check shit. yes you. you still have to fact check shit. a lot of people are great at fact checking stuff they don’t want to be true, but somehow are still absolute ass at fact checking stuff that’s rhetorically convenient to them. even people my age, who I KNOW grew up doing internet/bibliography literacy workshops, and being warned not to believe anything that isn’t reliably sourced, people who DO harp on fact checking conservative output or whatever, are still kneejerk sharing unsourced shit that is partially or wholly untrue or misleading, because it suits whatever narrative they’re pursuing in that moment, without even a “take this with a grain of salt”. fact check!!!!!! look at the sources!!!!! yes it’s a drag!!! do it!!!!!

DnD whale magic??

TL;DR my players are weird and obsessed with whales and now I have to homebrew a whole new system of magic based on whaling in two weeks. help me please

So I had a dnd session today. This is a campaign that started in January, and we’ve met maybe 4 times in total thanks to scheduling issues. It was SUPPOSED to be a pirate story, with the party sailing the high seas and exploring tropical islands to discover the truth behind their captain’s murder.

Today, as the DM, I announced to my players that I was fast-tracking them to the end of the story after we agreed that the campaign wasn’t sustainable due to scheduling issues. They took that as their opportunity to take this thing off the rails.

Note that everything I’m about to describe happened over the course of an hour.

It started simple. The party was killing some guards at the end of a prison break, and a PC landed the final blow on the guards’ captain. I ask the player how he kills the captain, and he responds “I turn him into whale oil.”

I ask him to describe how, and he says “whale magic.”

So the PC picks up the guard captain and shakes him violently. A plume of smoke appears from below their feet, and the rest of the party hears kicking and screaming from behind the smoke. Lo and behold, when the smoke clears, the party sees the PC inexplicably holding a bucket of whale oil, with no sign of the guard captain anywhere.

The player takes a swig of the whale oil (and succeeds the constitution save).

There was a letter left on the floor, addressed to the guard captain with some plot-important information. The party wants to ask the captain about it. But he is whale oil. So that would be difficult.

I tell them that they would need “an experienced practitioner of whale magic” to get the guard captain back. Naturally, they ask where they can find a “master whaler.”

Long story short, this is now the main plot of the campaign.

The players spent the rest of the session throwing all of my established story and lore out the window, and it became a competition to see who could take control by coming up with the new whale magic lore first. By the end, they were taking a stroll through a burning city in the midst of civil war, asking random citizens where they can find the local whaler.

I mostly retained control as the DM, but now I have two weeks to homebrew a whole system of whale magic and tie it into the brand-new story of my campaign.

Help?

I need ideas.
