I've been rereading the Nevermoor series now that I've finished Silverborn, in preparation to reread Silverborn with my friends when it finally comes out in the U.S.

So far, every book in the series has decontextualized the ones before it, mainly by adding new layers of worldbuilding, but for me, Silverborn mostly recontextualized the prior books on an emotional level, and I'm trying to prove this theory with a reread!

Also yes I know I've just given into the loop of Nevermoor rereads. 2025 has been rough folks but these books are joy!

I've already finished rereading Nevermoor, and the thing that jumped out most to me on this post-Silverborn reread is the rushed nature of Jupiter's rescue of Morrigan on Eventide and the ongoing struggle with Inspector Flintlock over Morrigan's immigration status. Given what we now know about Jupiter's attempts to get the Darlings to claim Morrigan to get her to Nevermoor legally, this whole subplot hits differently!

I still sort of think Jupiter had plenty of time once Morrigan is in Nevermoor to get her false identity papers just in case, which would have solved the whole problem, but I think this tells us something about his character, his desire to act as much as possible within the law (he smuggled Morrigan in but he's not going to break the law further by forging her identity), and also his confidence in his plan and his reliance on Wunsoc and pin privilege. Very interesting!

Jack! Everything with Jack hits different now! Love this! Break my heart into a million little pieces with their dual backstories of trauma becoming sibling rivalry because they both have only Jupiter and want him to be just theirs why don't you? And Jack finally being the bigger person once he understands what's up with Morrigan, even better than she does, and welcoming her into the family, and Morrigan letting him because a family is what she wants so much! My feelings!

We know now that the Wunderground and Brollyrail are Wundrous acts, and we know a bit more about how Wundersmiths interact with other Wundrous acts, which sheds some light on why Squall is focusing on the Wunderground to create weak points on the Gossamer line to get the Hunt into Nevermoor.

Squall was fascinating in this book before. He's more fascinating now! We've seen so many personas of him: the mild-mannered Mr. Jones, the evil Wundersmith practically throwing a tantrum at the end of book 1, and how these contrast with Squall and Morrigan's relationship going forward through the next few books is really interesting. Looking forward to encountering him in my rereads of Wundersmith and Hollowpox and developing my thoughts a bit more on this one.

Right now I'm mulling over how throughout the whole series, Squall is seeking Morrigan's consent for him to teach her. He attempts to kidnap her at the start of Nevermoor, a fact he acknowledges in Silverborn when he first gives her the background on her mom, but otherwise he's content for her to stay in Nevermoor once she's there, even though the Hunt can physically move her so I'm pretty sure he could have brought her back to the Republic if he wanted to. I think he had a plan and then Jupiter got Morrigan into Nevermoor and he was like well this works just as well, which makes me think his plan would have been to get Morrigan into Nevermoor all along. She would have to get Nevermoor eventually, even if she trained with Squall from the start in the Republic, so she could meet the Wundrous Divinities, but I think there's more to it. Also, Squall says that he doesn't want an unwilling student, which I believe, but again he was trying to kidnap her at first, so I wonder if the apprenticeship contract is somehow more important than we realize.

I remain obsessed with Squall pretending to be his own assistant! Dude, why?

Ornella Crow! What the hell? Madam, why?

Actually the contrast between Morrigan's two grandmothers is really interesting: both treating her generally badly, both generally refusing to acknowledge her, but one acting to save her life and the other refusing to act to save her life, neither of them explaining why.

I don't think we're done with the Crows personally, and I don't just mean Bertram.

So if we extend the Wunsoc unit families like we do in Silverborn, with Jupiter being both Morrigan and Jack's uncle, does this make the families of the unit members also related? Like is Baby Dave Morrigan's baby sister too? Are all the unit's parents like parents to everyone? Are Jupiter and Corvus Crow brothers? Just thinking about this as Jupiter runs around the dinner table hugging and kissing all the Crows before whisking Morrigan away.

How many people in Wunsoc know or guess that Morrigan is related to Bertram Crow? Yes he's renamed himself but someone somewhere must have made the connection, right?

I am even more intrigued by Jupiter's patron! My theory is he was a member of the Basement Nerds and talked to Jupiter about what he was learning, maybe because Jupiter could see it on him, but he didn' tell Bertram.

Jupiter fighting back tears when talking about what a unit is breaks my heart now that I know more about his unit/Jack's mom!

After the whole incident with Squall, Jupiter gives Morrigan a hug when he finds her. I'm kinda haunted by the fact that there isn't a Jupiter/Morrigan hug at the end of Silverborn, and actually I think this hug at the end of Nevermoor, which we see in a quick explanation of the aftermath of the Squall incident and don't actually get in a scene, might be the only hug in the series. I'm now on a hug hunt!

Finally, the scene with the black parade before the fright trial has a completely different read to it now that we know the layers and layers behind the black parade! And a sneak peak at my thoughts on Wundersmith since I've started rereading that: "If not for us, you'd all be speaking zombie," the motto of the School of Arcane Arts, yeah that sounds about right!

More thoughts to come as I keep rereading and digesting!

thinking about the points in hollowpox and silverborn about wunder reading the intentions of the user and how morrigan loses control very quickly in the darlings' receiving room and how. if one were just a little too emotional. and a little too angry in a moment. wunder might read their intention. and do horrible things even if they probably wouldn't have done it themselves

finished reading silverborn!!

i managed to buy it yesterday morning actually but i was busy with school and it took me a while to read through the entire thing and organise my thoughts

spoiler warning bc im gonna start ranting now

my feelings about this book are kinda complicated but overall i really liked it!!

firstly it felt so surreal and nostalgic having new content and returning to the world of the books after 4 years

i used to reread the first two books an insane amount in primary school and was completely obsessed with hollowpox when it came out but slowly lost interest over the long hiatus

but reading silverborn reminded me how much i love this series and i was just in a state of pure autistic happiness reading the first few chapters

about the subject matter

this book felt completely different to the previous ones to me in terms of vibes. probably due to most of it being set in the silver district and barely anything happening at wunsoc despite how long it is + i missed the deucalion so bad 😭😭

it really is a book about rich people family drama but it was also surprisingly interesting for something i previously had zero interest in. i liked the twins and lintel hopping was a really neat concept

and i really like how noelle's character was brought back and shes more than just a one dimensional snobby mean girl now

overall i like how it handled the theme of biological vs found family / in the end it doesn’t matter whos related to you by blood your true family is the one you choose 😭😭 so much angst though

my favourite parts of the book were probably mog and squall’s apprenticeship scenes they have such a fun dynamic now that mog isn’t as scared or distrustful of him anymore

its like a parallel to mog’s relationship with jupiter but different somehow and i really like the contrast / squall is brutally honest with morrigan while jupiter is always trying to protect her feelings

other people have said this already but i love squall in this book hes so funny

final thoughts: this book really feels like a transition or a turning point (in universe too with the clock face changing colour at the end and basking as this sort of high risk high reward period of time where important age defining things could happen)

it feels a bit like alot of the book was getting stuff out of the way and setting up for big plot relevant things to happen in the next book(s) at least thats the vibe i personally got

so im banking on more wundersmith lore and free state vs wintersea republic political tension being a major part of book 5

idk i just wanna see more of president wintersea

also now that we know the dev ladies bid was real does that mean the harmons military school is too?? i wonder how that ones gonna play out and why they would be interested in mog

also jupiter meeting squall in book 5 means squrth will become a thing for real trust me /hj though i am very excited for them to meet

also i really liked how the book started with the clock changing and went back in time to the events leading up to it i love myself a bit of non-linear-ness in the narrative

i do not get why people ship squrth

 hope nobody in unit 919 gets together romantically because the lack of romantic stuff in the series is a bit part of why i feel so connected to the series (im aro and its very hard to find fantasy books without at least romantic subplots)

This fandom is small but very sweet. People are kind and respectful to each other. It is very refreshing after the larger fandoms (SW, HP, LOTR) which sadly have lots of trolls and haters.

i have heard fandoms can be quite toxic (luckily never met one which is) and it seems to me that (at least the discord) is not really toxic

I Think in Canon Morrigan Might be able to travel through time in the future or even better be able to communicate through the ghostly hours to different people. I say this because, the voice Morrigan hears in the alley during Hollowpox could be hers from the future after she has developed mastery over the wundrous arts. And That the Kindling does know about what happened to the wundersmiths but wanted to test morrigan since it also sees the black ice in her heart.

hot take: people mischaracterize my girl cadence so bad!! She's not an angry evil grump all the time! She brought Morrigan a wholeass puppy! Almost no one in-universe remembers she exists— cut her some slack!

Where do they get Nevermoor get all their food? Buying all of it from outside isn't smart when it seems like all their neighbors don't like them and won't even admit that they exist.

I'm not sure if people actually want to see it, or if it's just good old fandom fun (I've read some pretty good Jupiter x Squall fics by people who definitely don't ship them lol), but a lot of people ship different members of Unit 919. My hot take is I want very little actual romantic relationships involving the Unit, if any at all. I'm here for the lore, action, and character dynamics, not really the romance, and I think it would take time away from other aspects of the series. Not every series needs to be heavy on the romance. That being said, I think a little Archthorne couldn't hurt.

I would've wished Nevermoor to be slightly fleshed out more in passing. Like because there would absolutely have to be an underwater section correct? For mermaids and sea creatures wunimals. Even if it was just a brief sentence that would be so cool! (Obviously there are still more books to come but yeah)

I feel like Jupiter is going to struggle far more with Morrigan's apprenticeship to Squall than the fandom currently thinks

taking this as an opportunity to share my overall theory for how the series will play out and end. warning this is A LOT OF TEXT (i'll put a tldr for u bc im not a masochist) (also ignore all of the plot holes :3)

i think squall will get a redemption arc, wunsoc isnt what it seems and is actually a controlling elitist society that bends the social, political, and cultural landscape of the free state to its own benefit, squall realized this, he and the other wundersmiths tried to revolt against them, but he was the only survivor and wunsoc painted him as the murderer to the free state and exiled him and erased the history of wundersmiths for their own gain. the society now wants morrigan to become their tool and vessel to make them stronger (possibly even use her to take over the republic). the republic though also isnt innocent (wunsoc in my pov might be the lesser of two evils). squall is exiled into what is now the republic, but each state had previously been separate nations. squall meets some military dictator (not maud bc this was too long ago), who promises him that if he helps them take over the other countries and form the republic, then they will give him somewhere where wundersmiths can learn their magic in peace and without being used as weapons. he has to accept, because otherwise the history of wundersmiths would be lost as he would be on his own and the reborn wundersmith souls wouldnt know their truth. dictator gains power over the newly formed republic, squall wants to find other wundersmiths but dictator says no bc they still need him as a tool. fast forward present day republic wants to take over the free state, and the free state wants to take over the republic. mog realizes that neither are good, doesnt trust anyone, her own unit feels foreign (except cadence and hawthorne who are by her side no matter what), she has no idea what jupiter's stance would be, she somewhat believes what squall tells her about what really happened but never knows if hes trying to manipulate her, and she cant believe anyone. ALSOOOOOO imagine mog saying to jupiter "do you trust me" and he hesitates but then says "yes" DGDGJSDFGRWUKGILRGHRFKGBJTGHRTVGBHJB im unwell TL;DR - wunsoc is evil, republic is more evil, squall surprisingly is NOT that evil, and helps mog and some wunsoc members overthrow both the republic and wunsoc and return the republic states to being independent nations (maybe great wolfacre becomes part of nevermoor??) and everything ends in harmony and world peace.

Considering how badly Wunsoc reacted to Morrigan being a Wundersmith, the crew at the Deucalion are far too accepting. Like maybe they're all just genuinely really nice people, but it's likely that some of them do harbour some kind of resentment about it. Like, how couldn't you? There must be some lingering apprehension that they keep quiet because of Jupiter.

Some people in the fandom are disgusting and forget that characters like Jack and Hawthorne are children.

I think the emphasis on shipping feels really out of place int his fandom tbh. Idk, I get having headcanons about the characters’ sexualities and I do that too, but I just don’t see much shipping potential in the characters? Theyre just besties/found family and that’s part of what I love about them

any fanfic I’ve read that tries to redeem squall usually completely loses all his characterisation in the process, even though I think it’s possible to have redeemed (and BY THAT I mean a squall who cares about Morrigan and other people and understands and is effected by hurt he has caused) squall with canon characterisation. You just have to work HARD.

I don't have any accounts to make fan content myself or talk to other members of the fandom, but I check Reddit and Wattpad almost every day to see if there's new content by others.

How do I not see anything?! Just want to see more generally, I think!

I like a lot about where the (Tumblr) fandom is at right now (no ship wars, big controversies, or other fights that I know of right now), but I think it would be nice to see a little variety in headcanons and theories, because it feels like a little bit of an echo chamber right now (for example, it's almost always the same 919 members being shipped together). But I'm also afraid that more varied opinions will bring more fights with them, and I don't want to see our fandom fall into huge, meaningless arguments.

The parade was halted in its tracks as people swarmed through the barriers and into the empty street in front of them, a choreographed stream coming from every direction to block their path. Without even thinking about it, Morrigan Cadence, Hawthorne, Thaddea, and Lam stepped in front of the younger members of Unit 920, and the others followed in less than a heartbeat.

‘SEND HER BACK! SEND HER BACK! SEND HER BACK!’ The familiar voice of Laurent St James, founder of the Concerned Citizens of Nevermoor Party, campaigner against Wunimal rights, loud owner of terrible opinions, and most notably, in the words of Jupiter North, ‘some rich idiot’ – boomed unpleasantly from his beloved megaphone. 

‘Ugh, not this guy again. Hasn’t he shouted about you enough for one lifetime?’ Cadence muttered to Morrigan. ‘Take a day off, mate.’

‘The Concerned Citizens of Nevermoor say “NEVER MORE!”’ shouted St James. ‘Never more will we allow our city to be controlled by a maker of monsters, by a wolf in sheep’s clothing, by a too-powerful, too-dangerous, megalomaniacal despot!’

‘Is he talking about me?’ Hawthorne said quietly, grinning as he lifted the sleeve of his cloak to reveal his werewolf costume again. ‘How rude.’

Morrigan almost laughed, but not quite.

‘Never more will we allow our citizens to be put at risk! The Wundrous Society has smuggled in a WUNDERSMITH from the WINTERSEA REPUBLIC, our ENEMY NATION! We must rise as one and say NEVER MORE! Never more will we allow them to do as they please, running their wild schemes on the taxpayer’s coin and putting our children in danger!’ He paused, picking up a small child beside him and lifting her onto his shoulders. ‘We must rise up and DEMAND that they SEND HER BACK!’

Then he handed the megaphone up to the little girl, whose tiny voice grew monstrous as she shrieked, ‘SEND HER BACK! SEND HER BACK! SEND HER BACK!’

Morrigan felt she might vomit. She turned in a circle but there was nowhere to go. She was surrounded by so-called Concerned Citizens holding signs with slogans like MONSTERS WELCOME NEVER MORE! and HEY WINTERSEA, WE DON’T WANT YOUR WUNDERSMITH! Though they’d grown since she’d last seen them, still they numbered only a hundred, maybe two. But there were thousands of Nevermoorians lining Lightwing Parade, and even some of them took up the chant. Unit 919 closed around her. 

‘DO SOMETHING, you fool!’ came a sharp shout. Morrigan turned to the sound of the voice and saw a familiar pale face in the crowd, twisted with disgust. Her fingertips tingled with gathering Wunder. He was right, she ought to do something, she had to do something–

‘MOOOOOGGGGGG! MOG, I’M COMING!’ The sea of black cloaks parted to let Jupiter through, still holding his candle aloft. He launched himself to the front of the parade, blazing with righteous anger, shouting, ‘How dare you!’

And Laurent St James put the child back on the ground, squaring up to Jupiter and bellowing, ‘SEND HER BACK, SEND HER BACK!’ right into his face. 

Several things happened at once. Unbalanced, Jupiter dropped his nightbeacon candle. It rolled into the crowd of Concerned Citizens, still alight. The little girl reached down to pick it up and time slowed to a crawl and Morrigan felt every drop of water in her body turn to ice. She wanted to shout a warning but the words stuck in her throat, so she ran for the candle instead, fingers tingling as she grabbed it just in time, and– They were everywhere. Everywhere. There was no Wundrous defence against this. No way of unseeing it. The artists were all wrong, they were too gentle. They lied. The misery they’d painted wasn’t big enough, it wasn’t hard enough, it wasn’t frightening, or painful, or ghastly enough. The Unresting wore their guilt on the outside like chains. Like thick vines creeping around their hands and feet, wrapped around their necks, forever twisting, tightening, squeezing. The nightbeacon didn’t just let Morrigan see them, it let her hear them too. And that was worse. It was so much worse, it was unbearable. No rest, they sang without words. No rest. Morrigan wanted to weep. She wanted to run. She could hear words beneath the wailing, could hear her name spoken in familiar panicked voices, but they felt so far away, and all she could see was the Unresting. A ghoulish woman advanced on her, mouth open in a silent scream, reaching out with pale, grasping hands through a tangle of vines, ‘GET AWAY FROM ME!’ Before the words even left her mouth, Morrigan regretted them. A sea of faces turned towards her, black-socket eyes and gaping maws, growing wide with horror or hunger. She’d broken the rules. She’d noticed the Unresting. And they’d noticed her right back.

Chapter 16 - Follow the glow

The different candles drawing different people in is interesting to me. What if it’s like individual fears represented. Hawthornes is up a tee so you’d think heights, but a dragon rider would probably be able to deal with that, especially one as confident as Hawthorne, so maybe Falling? Dragons probably fly up so high that falling is certain death so I’d say it’s an understandable and healthy fear to have. Morrigan and cadence have the same candle so perhaps something to do with being forgotten? It’s what morrigan writes in her book trial and as a mesmerist cadence likely values the few people who can remember her very deeply. I struggle to see the metaphor with the pond though? Maybe being “swallowed” by the darkness

How did the Wundersmiths/cursed children of the Age of Poets survive? That Age was 17 years. We know that Wundersmiths can only live around 12 years before Wunder ultimately consumes them, so without Squall actually teaching the cursed children some of the Wundrous Arts they would have self-destructed before Eventide.

And what's going on with Wundersmiths born in the Free State? I would assume Squall still kills them because his Hunt can reach them, but there is no indication anyone knows about cursed children in Nevermoor, or even something about people born on Eventide dying strangely sometimes (all of the Deucalion celebrate Morrigan's birthday without comment). Does he just wait for them to self destruct? But a) why wouldn't he have found the 'window into Nevermoor' that he did in Wundersmith sooner? b) wouldn't the Society have noticed kids suddenly dying from Wunder explosion?

This could be explained by Morrigan having an unnatural amount of Wunder buildup, even for a Wundersmith, but to rival a 17-year-old?
