Most of the time random thoughts/ ideas enter our minds - whatever the mind may be - and not generated of our own. Possibly because you heard them, read them or saw them. There’s no control in this process, hence the saying. This statement was made by Professor Jordan Peterson, but he may have cited it from another researcher.

Pheromone in baby mouse tears makes females less interested in sex.
This pheromone is called EP S22. A paper published in 2013 revealed that this pheromone resulted in the rejection of males to sex. Now the same is suggested for females. People with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) suffer from either obsessions, or compulsions, or a combination of both.
Obsessions are unwanted, intrusive thoughts or images that repeatedly pop up. Compulsions are repetitive acts, that people feel driven to perform as to prevent or reduce anxiety or distress or to prevent some dreaded event or situation. Even though it is clear that these acts are either unrealistic or excessive.
OCD can be a highly disabling disease, with people spending almost all of their waking time on their obsessions or compulsive behaviors.  Reference Haan, Rietveld, Stokhof, & Denys. (2016). Becoming more onself? Changes in personality following DBS treatment for psychiatric disorders: Experiences of OCD patients and general considerations.

Over the past twenty years several claims about human cognition have been made. Extended: cognitive states and processes can extend beyond the boundaries of the organism (e.g. notes for memory). Enactive: dependent on aspects of the activity of the organism. Embodied: cognitive properties and performances can crucially depend on facts about our embodiment. Embedded: cognitive properties and performances can crucially depend on facts about our relationship to the surrounding environment. Affective: our cognition is intimately dependent upon the value of the object of cognition. Ward & Stapleton, Cognition as enacted, embodied, embedded, affective and extended. (2016)

Rene Descartes (1596 - 1650) believed that the only proof of his existence is that he was thinking and doubting. He felt that one could not rely on one’s senses because those very senses have often proven to be deceptive (e.g. optical illusions). He used introspection and reflection. Plato (ca. 428 - 348 B.C.) and his student Aristotle (384 - 322 B.C.) have influenced modern thinking in psychology greatly (and other fields). Plato was a rationalist, and believed that knowledge gets acquired through thinking and logical analysis. Aristotle was an empiricist, and believed that knowledge gets acquired through empirical evidence (experience and observation). Both these approaches are used to some extent together in the psychology discipline. Rationalism is important for theory development and empiricism for the empirical evidence.  References: Image: ilimvemedeniyet.com Philosophy: Cognitive Psychology, Sternberg (2012)

Why do marketing executives in large companies spend so much company money on advertisements?
If we consider the ‘availability heuristic’, we make judgments based on the easiness of which we can call to mind what we find relevant for the specific situation - phenomenon.  So if you wanted to buy a new phone, you make a decision based on the familiarity of a brand.  Understanding cognitive psychology help us understand what goes on in our daily lives.  Cognitive Psychology, Sternberg (2012)

Throughout life’s experiences you are training your brain to see specific patterns and filter out the rest. This is habitually formed by upbringing, education etc. and brought into the unconscious. Because of this you are limiting yourself. Don’t Always believe what you think or see.

Don't think you can't make a difference. You are one node in a network of hundreds, maybe even thousands. And they are nodes connected to other networks.
