So, it's been quite a long time since our last Local Heroes mix, but we promise the wait is completely worth it.  For Local Heroes 003, we have Edmontonian Robbie Jeffrey, under the alias Žhii.  All the songs in this mix are original productions.  Influenced by the sounds of Burial, Martyn, and Andy Stott, he combines his electronic sensibility with deep, drone-like undertones. This mix is most enjoyable at max volume.
Mix is available for download here: www.soundcloud.com/zhii/a-set-of-leather You can also follow his blog at: www.soundofzhii.wordpress.com/
1. There are a lot of vocal samples throughout your mixes, is there a particular reason you like to use these? When I’m using more straightforward vocals, they’re either coming from samples that I’ve manipulated or they’re coming from a vocoder, an EHX Voice Box. Both of those are typical for this kind of music, so I’ll try to add longer samples, built mostly from recordings of the radio, just to add a segue or a sense of narration.
2. What are your top 5 favorite pieces of production equipment that you own? I just bought the new Moog Sub Phatty, which has an incredibly deep grittiness that I’ve never really heard before. For recording guitar, I’ve been using the Meatsmoke tube preamp pedal from Verellen Amplifiers in Seattle, which is perfect for my setup since it has a dedicated recording output which can be plugged directly into a mixing board or DAW. I have to include my Eventide Space reverb stompbox since I use it on nearly everything, and another stompbox, the Line 6 FM4 Filter Modeler, which is great for turning straightforward synth and guitar lines into something more capricious. My most treasured piece, however, is my Jackson RR1T. I’ve been playing that guitar for seven years and I’m increasingly inspired by it. It’s all over this mix—even if it’s obscured with filters, distortion and reverb, it shows up on nearly every song.
3. If you could collaborate with any musician, who would it be? Dead or alive? Dead, it’d definitely be Nero, the Emperor who fiddled while Rome burned. Alive, I’d have to say Bobby Krlic, aka The Haxan Cloak. This is mostly because any collaboration would probably just shame me into realizing how vastly inferior of a producer I am. It’d be humbling. His music really does create and inhabit its own hellish world and then brusquely rips you from it, and it stays in my memory more as a recollection of unease than as a collection of songs.
4. Any advice to someone starting out as a producer? My first bit of advice, obviously, would be to seek help from a more experienced producer. Beyond that, one piece of wisdom that keeps coming back to me is that regardless of your limitations, you’ve really got to put the work into the songs. And that’s self-evident, but it’s so fundamental and so easy to forget. Ornette Coleman revolutionized jazz when all he had was a plastic saxophone. There are so many examples of great songs outliving the medium in which they first appeared. With electronic music especially, there’s this impulse to think, “if only I had this one piece of gear, things could come out so much better.” But that’s just a distraction from putting in the real work. A great song will shine through a shitty recording, but no amount of sheen can make a lamentable song sound great.
5. So if you had to choose – would you rather make one new law of your choice or get rid of any 1 law of your choice? I would repeal any one of Newton's laws of motion, and I would be swiftly punished.
Tracklist: 1. Žhii - Acid Chrysanthemum 2. Žhii - Shoreline Sweating 3. Žhii - Jogging at Night 4. Žhii - Congo vs. Thames 5. Žhii - Felt Eyes 6. Žhii - A Name Synonymous with Greatness 7. Žhii - Various States of Undress 8. Žhii - Requiem of the Fowl 9. Žhii - Oh Death, Won't You Spare Me Over for Another Breath? I Was Asleep Through the Whole Thing
