agere hermit!tommy (+ some reg hermit!tommy) headcanons!

I wanted to do just agere but I couldn’t help but set up Tommy’s character a little more…oops! headcanons under the cut

Season: 10 (timelines? I’ve never heard of her) When did Tommy leave dsmp?: After his revival Is Tommy a hybrid?: yes, moth :] Who’s a little & who’s a CG?: little!tommy, cg!hermits

like most h!tommy fics, tommy ended up in hc by accident. the hermits themselves weren’t really worried - it’s 27 to one, after all. but tommy was. He put up an impeccable fight despite having no gear + numbers disadvantage anyways.

eventually it smoothens out and he becomes a “temporary guest” on the server “until they can figure out what to do with him” (sure. sure)

he builds his base out of cobblestone right on the world border. it’s a castle. cobble, because it’s his favorite block, and on the world border for two reasons - he’s a little insecure, on this server of grand building feats - and to stay hidden. he’s still wary. it’s instinctive.

the builders LOVE his base!! btw!! sure it’s crude and not that refined but no matter how hard tommy tries to conceal his pride/passion, they can tell. they try to subtly come over, give him resources/pointers/encouragement, etc etc. tommy doesn’t trust it (he does appreciate it, secretly. he won’t admit that to anyone [let alone himself] however)

Henry and Shroud have revived themselves. They have the same thing as Jellie goin’ on. They’re Tommy’s support animals <3 he doesn’t know know that it’s them, at least not consciously, but he named them after the old buddies.

now for agere time! mwehehe

Tommy’s been going “small” for a while now. Probably since pogtopia? he doesn’t have the words for it, never really did, but it’s been happening. he knows he’s not supposed to, but he can’t stop himself. (involuntary agere baybe!!!) He has a lot of unhealthy ideas around it - thinking it’s bad, mainly. a weakness.

he tries to hide it from the hermits. only doing it in the privacy of his own base, clutching a worn blanket in stubby and calloused fingers. he wanders aimlessly, babbling nonsense to himself. he hides whenever people find him during these moments. (Henry & Shroud try and protect him during these times.)

the first to find him is Bdubs. He came over to give some materials, and found a Tommy that is remarkably not-Tommy-ish. He catches on quickly.

Do the hermits have the words for it, either? Probably not, no. But that doesn’t matter. They’ve been across many servers, thousands of worlds, seen all the whims of the universe. They’re no stranger to this, even if they don’t know the terminology.

Tommy is mistrustful about this. He’s hesitant about showing this side of himself. He’s weak in this state - easy to take advantage of.

But this is Hermitcraft. They wouldn’t do that! Even if Tommy hasn’t internalized that, it’s true.

Tommy’s little self kind of has the inverse character development that his big one does. When he first finds himself in HC, he’s loud and reckless as a coping mechanism. Does he ever entirely mellow out? Not really. But the calmness does whisper in the waves around him. On the other hand - when he’s little, at first, he’s shy and quiet. Downcast. But as he gets more comfortable around the hermits he gets louder, braver, outgoing, and very silly.

Some of his favorite activities with the hermits: hiking (he gets to go in the MUD!! and play with BUGS!! and WORMS!!), building, making food, putting on puppet shows/plays, and in general just having fun! (most of these he’s just watching them do stuff. but, like, you get it.)

Stuffed Animal OBSESSION. he didn’t really have any in dsmp, but now that he has the space to express himself, he’s having SO MUCH FUN. multiple rooms in his castle are dedicated to his collection. The hermits love indulging him.

thinks redstone looks so so cool, REFUSES to learn how it works. like woaw prebby. you’re explaining 2 me what it does? hell to you! hell for one thousand years!!

has a pallet for warm foods, especially when small. angel milk, oatmeal, baked goods, you know. the one exception is ice cream (yummy!) and maybe candy

wasn’t very touchy at first, but now that he’s more comfortable, EVERY TIME he’s around a hermit he’s glommed onto them. It can be subtle, like hand holding, but more than not he’s koala-ed onto them. He’s defined them as “safe” in his head, so now that he’s around them more, the closer he is to them the safer he is.

very talkative. not usually words? Just random babbling. It’s how the hermits find him small most of the time - he’ll send random sounds into the server chat. Like “bla ba ba?” or “meep mrrp. grgrbr. pffff bla bla!!! keee!!!” and people are like. oh he’s baby let me fawn over him. he’s constantly blabbering. and like yeah the chat is just text but you can babble over text.

bedtime is HARD. he HATES IT and gets VERY FUSSY. it has to be SPECIFIC and WARM and NICE and PRETTY or he will NOT close his eyes!!! every hermit has a different way of handling this. and if the specific hermit does it different than the normal way they specifically do it it’s an AFFRONT TO GOD!!!

love love LOVES soft things. stuffed animals? yes. but also blankets, pillows, clothing, and secretly… fur. any hybrid hermits who have some are amazing because of this. He’ll fawn over them for hours, just petting them over & over.

loves the stars/nighttime. will stargaze for hours. it puts him into a trance, basically. probably because of the moth thing but like you know the stars are pretty !!!

Oooh, what about Journey? I think the sand probably took a lot to pull off

it did!! i watched a video about it, god, like 6 years ago or something and it was a very very important thing for them to get just right. this is goimg to be a longer one because i know this one pretty extensively

here's the steps they took to reach it!!

and heres it all broken down:

so first off comes the base lighting!! when it comes to lighting things in videogames, a pretty common model is the lambert model. essentially you get how bright things are just by comparing the normal (the direction your pixel is facing in 3d space) with the light direction (so if your pixel is facing the light, it returns 1, full brightness. if the light is 90 degrees perpendicular to the pixel, it returns 0, completely dark. and pointing even further away you start to go negative. facing a full 180 gives you -1. thats dot product baybe!!!)

but they didnt like it. so. they just tried adding and multiplying random things!!! literally. until they got the thing on the right which they were like yeah this is better :)

you will also notice the little waves in the sand. all the sand dunes were built out of a heightmap (where things lower to the ground are closer to black and things higher off the ground are closer to white). so they used a really upscaled version of it to map a tiling normal map on top. they picked the map automatically based on how steep the sand was, and which direction it was facing (east/west got one texture, north/south got the other texture)

then its time for sparkles!!!! they do something very similar to what i do for sparkles, which is essentially, they take a very noisy normal map like this and if you are looking directly at a pixels direction, it sparkles!!

this did create an issue, where the tops of sand dunes look uh, not what they were going for! (also before i transition to the next topic i should also mention the "ocean specular" where they basically just took the lighting equation you usually use for reflecting the sun/moon off of water, and uh, set it up on the sand instead with the above normal map. and it worked!!! ok back to the tops of the sand dunes issue)

so certain parts just didnt look as they intended and this was a result of the anisotropic filtering failing. what is anisotropic filtering you ask ?? well i will do my best to explain it because i didnt actually understand it until 5 minutes ago!!!! this is going to be the longest part of this whole explanation!!!

so any time you are looking at a videogame with textures, those textures are generally coming from squares (or other Normal Shapes like a healthy rectangle). but ! lets say you are viewing something from a steep angle

it gets all messed up!!! so howww do we fix this. well first we have to look at something called mip mapping. this is Another thing that is needded because video game textures are generally squares. because if you look at them from far away, the way each pixel gets sampled, you end up with some artifacting!!

so mip maps essentially just are the original texture, but a bunch of times scaled down Properly. and now when you sample that texture from far away (so see something off in the distance that has that texture), instead of sampling from the original which might not look good from that distance, you sample from the scaled down one, which does look good from that distance

ok. do you understand mip mapping now. ok. great. now imagine you are a GPU and you know exactly. which parts of each different mip map to sample from. to make the texture look the Absolute Best from the angle you are looking at it from. how do you decide which mip map to sample, and how to sample it? i dont know. i dont know. i dont know how it works. but thats anisotropic filtering. without it looking at things from a steep angle will look blurry, but with it, your GPU knows how to make it look Crisp by using all the different mip maps and sampling them multiple times. yay! the more you let it sample, the crisper it can get. without is on the left, with is on the right!!

ok. now. generally this is just a nice little thing to have because its kind of expensive. BUT. when you are using a normal map that is very very grainy like the journey people are, for all the sparkles. having texture fidelity hold up at all angles is very very important. because without it, your textures can get a bit muddied when viewing it from any angle that isnt Straight On, and this will happen

cool? sure. but not what they were going for!! (16 means that the aniso is allowed to sample the mip maps sixteen times!! thats a lot)

but luckily aniso 16 allows for that pixel perfect normal map look they are going for. EXCEPT. when viewed from the steepest of angles. bringing us back here

so how did they fix this ? its really really clever. yo uguys rmemeber mip maps right. so if you have a texture. and have its mip maps look like this

that means that anything closer to you will look darker, because its sampling from the biggest mip map, and the further away you get, the lighter the texture is going to end up. EXCEPT !!!! because of aisononotropic filtering. it will do the whole sample other mip maps too. and the places where the anisotropic filtering fail just so happen to be the places where it starts sampling the furthest texture. making the parts that fail that are close to the camera end up as white!!!

you can see that little ridge that was causing problems is a solid white at the tip, when it should still be grey. so they used this and essentially just told it not to render sparkles on the white parts. problem solved

we arent done yet though because you guys remember the mip maps? well. they are causing their own problems. because when you shrink down the sparkly normal map, it got Less Sparkly, and a bit smooth. soooo . they just made the normal map mip maps sharper (they just multipled them by 2. this just Worked)

and uh... thats it!!!! phew. hope at least some of this made sense

something a friend sent me

Ok I was too lazy to take my insomnia meds tonight which was obviously a mistake because as of writing this it’s 5:00 am on the dot and I have yet to get a wink of sleep. But it’s ok because for the last half hour or so I have been entertaining myself to the point where my face hurts from laughing with this thought. 

So Minecraft story mode au/fanfic where it’s not explicitly stated what’s different just that it’s a cannon divergence au (and maybe from the tags you can tell Ruben lives past episode 4). 

Everything is the same, just a rewrite UNTIL episode 4, the episode when Ruben dies.  Suddenly instead of getting Jesse’s point of view it switches to Ruben as he, with very vivid description from the author, lands in water instead of on the stone, survives and goes off running to find all his other friends.  They’re all so excited because you know that’s dangerous stuff for a pig. They’re all having this nice moment and then splat. 

Jesse lands on the pavement. 

Same emotional death scene but like way worse because while Ruben does help save the world in the original game people do meme on the Minecraft story mode games because of how Jesse just carries everyone in his group and no one does anything except for him. 

Everyone is sobbing even the pig as Jesse tries to say some overly emotional last words like “you know I love you guys you were my best friends and I’m glad that if I have to die it will be while I’m with you” or something. 

Poof. 

He is now inventory. 

Crying. 

Now jump cut like it does in the game to Ruben’s memorial but instead of being for Ruben it’s for Jesse. 

From here on out the game remains the same but they switch rolls, any lines said by Jesse in episodes 5-7 of season one or all of season 2 are now just Ruben going “oink”.  Still everyone responds like he said what Jesse actually says. Literally games the same but they switch. 

Season 1 episode 5: Ruben gets teleported to a sky block server with his friends, Ruben has the option to follow one friend to “build club” which is in fact a fight club reference or go to jail with another friend I’ll let you decide which is funnier, Ruben throws a terrorist off sky island.

Season 1 episode 6: Ruben meets world famous Minecraft YouTubers dantdm, captain sparkelz, ldshadowlady, Stacy plays, and stampy cat, Ruben accuses 3/5 of these YouTubers of murder, Ruben solves the mystery of the white pumpkin and her murder dinner party.

Season 1 episode 7 baybe: Ruben fights an over powered mind control ai and wins by ripping the red stone heart straight out of its circuiting.

Season 1 episode 8: Ruben rallies an army to fight off fascist dictators making people kill one another for sport and sending the “respawns” to the quartz mines, Ruben is forced to 1v2 these op fascists, Ruben loses, Ruben gets Tim’s armor, (I’ll send you a picture of Tim’s armor after this rant/brainstorm) Ruben kills the fascists, Ruben goes home. 

But that’s not all my dear elm tree, you see that’s only season one. Now we get to review the things Ruben does in season two. 

Episode 1: Ruben gets an intern named radar, Ruben takes a second to morn the best friend he lost in the battle with the wither storm recounting how good of a friend he was, Ruben (and I cannot stress enough these are all things that happen in game just with the rolls reversed) picks a Jesse look alike to be part of the parade celebrating the anniversary of them killing the wither storm, Ruben practices conflict resolution, Ruben goes on a mine adventure with Petra, Ruben gets a gauntlet stuck to his hand (hove?), Ruben freaks out, Ruben accidentally opens a gateway to hell the spills out charged creepers, Ruben feels betrayed by Petra, Ruben fights god, wins, Ruben closes the gateway to hell he opened.

Episode 2: Ruben has to fight god again, is losing, god purposely destroys the Jesse memorial to piss off Ruben, Ruben wins his second fight with god, what is the first thing Ruben does, rebuild his Jesse monument of course, god sets up another challenge for Ruben, Ruben technically loses due to the power of friendship, unfortunately Ruben has pissed off god enough god sends Ruben to bedrock prison.

Episode 3: Ruben climbs the ranks of bedrock prison, Ruben tries to release a prisoner that will help him and his friends escape bedrock prison, god does not like this, god feels Ruben has betrayed him once again, god just wants friends after all, you know who has a lot of friends, Ruben, god shape shifts into Ruben so that he can play fascist ruler, oh no, god has abandoned the bedrock prison anarchy has already started.

Episode 4 woho we’re on a roll: Ruben breaks a defunct god out of prison, defunct god tells where to find her dead god friends guide to making fascist god defunct, Ruben wins a dead god trivia contest, Ruben fights a creation made by god to be fought by other gods for entertainment, wins, Ruben goes home. 

Episode 5 you can do this we’re almost done: oh no god has made home a wasteland, Ruben forms a plan to get in gods office, Ruben hugs Lukas to prove it’s really him and not a fascist imposter, Ruben tries to reason with god fails, Ruben tries to reason with god, fails, Ruben tries to reason with god, fails, god tries to reason with Ruben, fails, Ruben kills god, order has been restored, radar Ruben ivor and Petra all set up for a sequel that will never happen. 

Le fin.

Interesting how even Barbara and Leah get nicknamed "powerhouses" by Daniel. He uses 主戦��� in the raws which could mean "main military power" but also "main valuable assets"... once again seeing them not by their character but by their value? To be honest, I guess it doesn't mean much when he calls them this once, but I thought it was worth pointing out.

Vergilius heard Dante's suicidal ideation and said, NOT ON MY WATCH!!!

It seems to me that the only thing keeping Dante alive is Vergilius. Because if he has no plans after finally killing him, what else is there for him? Just dying trying to repent for his mistakes? Finally let go? So I guess Vergilius recognizes this and decides he can't die. Because if he dies, then the man he (presumably) loves dies, too.

I saw someone mention this on Twitter: Dante can't live in a world where Vergilius doesn't exist (so he gives up on life when Vergilius is gone) while Vergilius won't accept a world where he and Dante can't live together (and therefore wants to change the world).

Weaow......

I think there's also something to say about Vergilius' childish appearance reflecting some sort of... inner workings of his? Does that make sense? I feel like the constant mention of it is trying to point to something. Like here:

Onto Imuri!

Lol the english translation didn't keep the heart Imuri added in her thoughts. Basically it's the same words but with a heart like "Oh, I've been here with Mr. Priest before ♡" Normally I wouldn't care, but I think this adds to her... character? Maybe? Well, whatever. Not particularly important, but The More You Know!

Imuri encounters Mystery Child!

I will begin by saying that I don't think it's Priest? Imuri herself doesn't think so either, so it's most likely someone else. They're muttering the name Rodrigo, which is curiously the name Belphegor uses when going to Earth in order to investigate marriage. Hm!!!! Inch resting indeed...

Oh, God! These expressions were genuinely heartrending. She really was looking for that sliver of hope -- that her hunch was wrong. That she and Imuri could stay friends. I am heartbroken for Leah. :( (and Barbara, for that matter).

They even try to find a middle ground, too! Barbara tries to find a common goal! They really don't want to exorcize her right now! But Imuri also raises valid points: why wake him to just put him to work again?

But then she says, soo confident in herself: what Priest needs right now is me. I guess she has actual proof of that? But by God it is so egoistical. (A word that describes Imuri quite well...)

My friend mentioned that she might be revealing her connections to them in order to scare Leah and Barbara out of trying to exorcize her. After all, they don't know that she's magicless yet, right? So that might make them hesitate.

But in a way, this feels like Imuri is saying "don't you know who my parents are?! Don't mess with me!" LOL. Does this count as some sort of nepotism???

Finally..... I am kinda sad it seems we're nearing the end arcs of Ekuoto?(?) I've been following since the very first chapter released in Japanese, so I'll miss it dearly.... Cope: maybe this is the first part, á la Dante's Inferno. Purgatory next! (Zero chance of this happening)

It's midnight baybe! you know what that means!! Time to cry!

It's cry time at the maple princes estate and Etho is HYPED for it. Oh boy oh boy he can hardly wait. He's not all that sad or anxious or anything but he doesn't really like feeling a lot in front of other people, he doesn't like the vulnerability and over concern it brings, so he saves up all his Big Emotions and then at midnight he cries about it.

Happy tears, sad tears, other tears, all the tears!! He's crying them!!! Right now!

Unfortunately. Well fortunately? Unfortunately? Whatever, Joel pops over for a surprise visit. Etho is all up in his feels, currently laughing so hard he chokes, tears streaming down his face because he's scrolling through all the funny messages that got sent in world chat that day.

Joel, the big sweetheart he is, is very concerned and rushes over asking if he's ok. Etho is horribly embarrassed by the scream he scramed and even more embarrassed by the state of his room. There's an ice cream tub, open and half eaten, on his night stand, chips everywhere, fan on, clothes on the ground. Not to mention the state of himself! he looks like a mess but that's the point!!

He does explain this to Joel and Joel politely leaves him to it, but Etho notices the next day Joel is being careful with him. Checking in, gentle touches, speaking softly, not breaking down his door to gossip. This is what Etho was trying to avoid!!

So a few days later he invites Joel over for a cry sesh.

And Joel gets it now. Crying is great! He should do it more!! It was especially great because now they each got to hold the other through tears of all sorts!! No pressure to wrap it up and calm down, if anything get more hysterical!! Who cares!! Not them!

Etho of course sometimes does not invite Joel, he likes his privacy sometimes, but it does become a sort of routine

Swansea stops them (“What the hell was that stunt you two pulled out there… Good shit, do that other song now.”) Then it’s really hard for Jimmy not to ravage that man on stage cause how does someone look that good sweating and out of breath? Well… Now that I say it out loud… 

 12.) buckshot boy (Onlyfriend)- Jimmy writes this (either right before or right after) he confesses to Curly and they decide to try a relationship! Jimmy’s gotten in the habit of workshopping his songs at open mics (sometime’s Curly follows him to hear what he’s working because he knows it might be months before it ever gets back to him) and he’s dumped so much of his insecurity into this song (“You command the room just like you do, just like I dont”)- It feels better shouting into a void of strangers than talking it through with someone he has a connection with (open mic lowkey becomes his therapy). Curly follows him to this particular night after literally not having the time to see him. Jimmy notices him at the end of the song, standing in the darkest corner next to the bar. He rushes off stage and out of a fire exit, Curly chases after him and they end up in a dead end alleyway… :)

The tone is too pop-y for his initial liking, so he tries to add some harsher vocals into it. It never makes it to concert-readiness, but Tulpar will use it as a warm-up. Jimmy would die before he told anyone the meaning, but he usually doesn't share anyways. They figure he must be pining for someone. Anya and Daisuke take secret bets on who it might be and even Swansea gets in on the action (lowkey the stage crew when they overhear practice)

13.) Chucky vs The Giant Tortoise (Dance Gavin Dance)- A song Jimmy and Curly share. They wrote it together after their first big concert, riding the high of being loved by hundreds and having their name fill a room that fits thousands. Jimmy likes to sneak in nonsense lyrics because he knows that half the time no one can tell what he’s saying. It’s a good half-time song because they will get silly with each other on stage. They do a little dance during the opening stanza into the first verse. They link their free arms around each other and do a motion like they’re sharing a drink through it all. They come apart and do a little shimmy in the first and second lines of the first verse (For context: “But failure is painful and dying is fun” is the arms. “Dress code, cocktails, looking so fancy, We feel like we’re a little bit classy,” is the shimmy. hehehehe)

14.) What He Dont Know- Curly wrote this after Jimmy confided in him about a certain fantasy. Along with his degradation kink (we all saw it coming), Jimmy has a bit of a cheating fantasy. They’ve talked about it in length during their freshman year of college, and then more in depth a few months into their relationship. 

No one else knows this but Jimmy and it secretly turns him on when they perform it. One day after they’re together they act on the fantasy, and every performance afterward has Jimmy replying that night over and over in his head. 

Unfortunately, Curly has a sexy front-man image to uphold, so he works it for the fans and does all of his moves to the audience instead of on Jimmy’s face. Jimmy gets jealous. Every performance ends in a messy dressing room.

15.) All I Want (A Day To Remember)- A song Jimmy wrote and worked on with Curly during the aftermath of his parents death. Without his parents, Jimmy feels disconnected from the world. They felt like his only tethers. Now that they were gone, Jimmy felt free, but simply free-floating. Through the air, undefined by gravity or guilt or shame. And when Curly brings him back to the ground this song follows.

Do you respond to comments?

In theory. I love chatting with people about fics - best way to make friends honestly - and I love when authors reply to my comments on their works! In practice I haven't replied in a while, which upsets me but it's more of a time/spoons thing. If I have time and energy I'd rather spend that commenting on one of my friends' fics rather than replying to comments on one of my own fics.

What’s the fic with the angstiest ending you’ve ever written?

I really don't do angsty endings! They're not always happy, but they tend to be bittersweet or open rather than angsty, and even if everything isn't resolved, I usually try to get across that the fic is ending in the middle of a situation and that everything will be okay later (like this snippet). I think the three that come closest are Let Steep Ten Minutes, Keeping Time with Curtain's +1 section, and 46 Fairview St. where it's kind of left open whether SQ will ever go back to visit his father. But again, those don't really feel angsty, just somewhat bittersweet with the hope that things will grow and get better.

Do you write crossovers? I haven't yet, but I'd be open to it! I think it's really challenging to write a good and cohesive crossover and I'm not sure where I'd start.

Have you ever gotten hate on a fic?

Nope! Perks of being in a small fandom. I imagine it does happen but I know y'all would have my back

Do you write smut?

Definitely not for mbs. I'd be open for other fandoms but it's not really what interests me the most.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of! I suppose someone might have fed a fic of mine into an AI writing generator which I'd personally consider a form of stealing, but I haven't heard of that happening. Please don't do that :)

Have you ever had a fic translated?

No! I've thought of trying to translate some of my own for funsies, but I'm definitely not at that level yet! Although the lovely @sophieswundergarten has made a few amazing podfics of both my fics and some other excellent fics in the mbs fandom, which I'd consider translation of a sort!

What’s your all-time favorite ship?

For mbs I'm more interested in platonic/familial connections, but I suppose I'd say Milligan/Moocho if I had to pick one? I really don't care if they're romantic or not though, I just like them together in any form that takes. For all-time I suppose I'd say Aziraphale and Crowley, though again I'm really not too picky about the nature of that, romantic or otherwise. Perks of being aroace spectrum baybe

What’s a WIP that you want to finish, but don’t think you ever will?

Never say never! But I do have a longer Curtain Wins AU buzzing around in my brain where Reynie and Sticky "join" him at the end of Book/Season 1 and then work to bring him down from the inside, without getting caught up in his manipulations. That might end up being comparable to Time and a Half in length, so maybe someday when I have an abundance of free time.

What are your writing strengths?

I think I write some banger first sentences :D especially in crack/funny fics

What are your writing weaknesses?

Too many adverbs! Also I get very easily stuck on exposition/beginning/ending/filler parts. I tend to write down the most tense/exciting moments for the fic and then the writing process stalls for the next three months.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fics?

For a real language, I think it can be a great opportunity to showcase a character's backstory/culture. It can also be immersive for the audience - if a character is in a foreign country where they don't speak the language, including pieces of dialogue in that language can help the audience understand how lost they're feeling (assuming the audience doesn't speak that language either)! If you're using a translation source though it can make for some pretty hilarious errors and mistranslations.

I think made-up languages absolutely fuck but I could never include one in my fic because I'd nerd out creating an entire writing, grammar, and vocab system and forget to write the actual fic.

1. What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)

R: context, baybe! Am i at a merc bar? Timbiqui Dark. I hate the stuff to be honest, but one has to keep up appearances.

Drinking on someone else's dime? Call me old fashioned, but i do enjoy an Old Fashioned. I like'em fixed with maraschino, and give the glass a spritz of absinthe before you pour. Fun fact: a surprising number of bartenders dont know that maraschino is a liqueur, and put a bouquet of fuckin cherries in your drink. Tha dinguses.

At home? I'll keep it simple, usually some combo of soda + spirits. Im particuarly fond of sasparilla and Yukon Jack.

A. I enjoy my drinks hot, not cold. Coffee with tequilla, hot coco with tequilla, tea with tequilla... you get the picture.

5. What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.) 

R: my pride wants me to say it was at my mamma's teat, but... nah, lets drop the kayfabe for a sec and be real here. I cry, a whole fuckin' lot more than i admit, and nowhere near as much as i should. We joke and pal around and measure our dicks at each other, but in the end? We kill people. We visit incredible violence on our fellow human beings, and that should take a toll. And if it ever stops taking a toll? Its time to retire.

That doesn't exactly answer the question, so... last time i cried was a few nights ago. @is-the-battlemech-cool-or-not was gettin' me up to speed on the hundred years of history i missed out on, and i managed to hold it all together till i got back to my bunk. And then i broke down sobbing. Part of that was just, pent up stress from the goddamn meatgrinder of the Clan invasion. I lost almost everything- the war, half our company, nearly everyone we knew outside of that shitty ass Invader that misjumped us here.

But hell, y'know what? Ive still got that other half of my company. I still have Agata and Joana, i still got most of Fursona's Fusiliers around. Hell, i'm even reignitin' something with Remus... look, all those good things, that ive still got? Cried for that, too. It aint all gotta be tears of sorrow, you can cry for the good things too.

A: August 20th, 3028. Got pepper sprayed at Melissa and Hanse's wedding.

8. Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)

R: whoo boy. Just cleared out ol' Ronnie's quarters on the Pony. Its not got much decoration yet, just the barebones cot and whatnot. Lots of stab marks in the walls and furniture from when i get bored...Kept his desk though- solid oak, from Samantha. And uhh... maybe a couple of pinups of Kamea Arano... and Candace Liao... and Hanse Davion... and-

A: Like Rowan, I've just moved quarters- her old room in fact, since I'm the XO now. I have my rock collection up on some shelves I put in- I like to get one rock from each celestial body I visit, unique if possible. Theres also stab marks all over the place that I'm filling in, thanks for that by the way Rowan.

10. What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.) 

R: Pistol, hormones, sunglasses. In that order.

A: I no longer have my katana from my time in the DCMS, but I do still have the wakizashi that paired with it. I still wear it, for luck.

Bonus: What’s the thing they’re into that they’re most embarrassed/conflicted about? (Hobbies, interests, kinks, etc. Gets into self-image vs how they want to be perceived vs what compels them anyway, plus backstory.)

R: Conflicted, specifically. The tough-as-nails merc persona is... its hard to keep up sometimes. I want to be vulnerable around those I love, but i have trouble turning the macho down. Its paid in dividends, over the years, in bonus c-bills made and fights avoided, but it's also taken its toll on me. And... i didnt let myself feel what i wanted to feel around someone who i now realized i loved- and still love- very much.

A: Sometimes, on my worst nights, I- I still think about my time in the DCMS. And its like I'm still there, never left, and couldnt leave if I wanted. And I dont feel scared or trapped by my superiors or my culture, or horrified by the things I'd done for the Combine. I dont feel anything but mild pride and nostalgia. I don't like those being the things I feel about that time.

I was at work today (I work at a local pizzeria as a phone handler) and as Fridays are,,,good lord it was bad. I expected the wave to subside after an hour or so like it usually does but it lasted THREE WHOLE HOURS.

I was right on the edge of a panic attack when I heard Bye Bye Bye come on the radio and I started imagining Deadpool doing his silly little dance while beating those soldiers up and I just. Calmed down. I started humming along to the song and I calmed down enough to withstand the urge to start crying

I think that was his way of saying "yeah go get em slay bestie!!!" and I so definitely imagined Wolverine just. Standing in the back and giving me a quiet little thumbs up

blurb | so I read leaks today, like the rest of us depraved leak enjoyers, and uhhhhh. figured we might get our spirits crushed next wednesday, so I might as well make use of the sudden, violent inspiration ch260 brought me (iykyk!!!!!!)

premise | culling games; issa a short one, satoru-centric as this fic is wont to be. I'm coming back to parts I wrote as early as last sept/oct, when I published ch01, and rewriting large chunks of them. I've made a 5k dent of progress in ch02 though, so fear not the rewrites, but anyway here's a mix of old content/new writing

Admittedly, certified expertise on barrier techniques, as well as in the art of temporal/spatial divergence/convergence, knows quite limited use. Even if you’re Gojō Satoru. Which is fine in principal—he didn’t go into either field expecting to come out equipped with one-solves-all abilities.

However, Satoru thinks, annoyance sparking in his gut—supposedly such expertise has a time and a place, like everything. So it sure would be nice if he could make use of said knowledge somehow. Preferably in situations like this one, which features not one, but both concepts at snug interplay. Like, oh, maybe something, anything he’s learned could have served to indicate—to give him a subtle heads up—a trill of anticipation up his spine, a blaring alarm in his ears, Satoru isn’t picky—that this spit-shined, well-crafted barrier in fact auto-employs spatial scrambling on new player entries.

Satoru isn't a fan of stepping through something upright, blink, and realise he’s once again falling, dropping towards the ground ass-over-tits, equilibrium and spatial awareness once again taken out back and point blank-executed.

The first time hadn’t necessarily been of the barrier’s making, however for all its disorienting, space-scrambling likeness, Satoru doesn’t feel like he’s above lumping them together. For all he knows, his looping through space and time and death happens at the mercy of the same cosmic force responsible for the Culling Game.

He sucks his teeth sourly, bullies his limbs as straight as the whipping, tugging, sucking wind will allow, and shoves himself right.

It’s needlessly violent, maybe, to break his trajectory by way of subtracting for Red; pinpointing it downwards and launching it into the ground like a targeted missile. Satoru jerks with the force, is propelled upwards by sheer force. A sharp explosion cuts through the air. He stabilises himself, cushions his feet and the immediate space around him with amplification/reversal. He chances a look downwards.

Smoke and debris rises from a crater like a sharp gash in the concrete below, spiralling as from a pyre upwards on the wind.

Oops, Satoru thinks, and, right, might have to take it a little easy in here.

Surviving  the Culling Game (by his own capabilities, anyway) isn’t the problem—keeping his temper in check, however, might be. He’s rarely genuinely angry, nor is he really prideful, per standard definition—to be that, one couldn’t lounge quite so high atop the apex as he innately does—however being incessantly poked and prodded at by external forces he has little to no ability to impact or counter; being constantly impacted and undermined by sheer, helpless (now there's a first time) inability to predict and preemptively act—it’s starting to stake out a space inside him; is slowly coalescing into a permanent root system at his brain stem. He is—not quite helpless, but certainly toothless. Bark, barely any bite.

It’s a startlingly potent buzz in his central nervous system. A severe itch beneath his epidermis. He resists the urge to scratch at a bare forearm.

Touching down on the ground, Satoru feels cursed energy crush down over his senses, potent and physical. Spread out though it may be, the pure concentration of curse inside the colony is impossibly dense; the layer of Infinity he’d purposefully employed before entering the barrier feels bogged down with weight. He’d feel dizzy with it if he weren’t so inherently used to it.

For most people, curse-sensitive or no, cursed energy will bog you down. It will infiltrate the spirit; cover the senses like sticky fly tape; spread insidiously through air, through touch; touch received and touch given—until you succumb to it. Cursed energy functions inherently like a toxin, or a very strong numbing agent, depending on how receptive you are to its effect; how innately weak you are to its effects. Here, at the centre of a Culling Game-colony, it’s heady almost to the touch.

To Satoru, what it is is a prime data scrape. Everywhere he looks, central Sendai—because it is Sendai; he’d gauged his location from enough small landmarks when coming down to land—brims with signature curse. It comes at him from all sides, so much different curse made into one entity, trapped as it is within the barrier, with nowhere to go except together. It rushes at him, ravenous for what he exudes; moths drawn to the Six Eyes’ gas blue flame. It’s unlike what he experienced in the Tomb of the Star; unlike Sukuna-within-Yūji, and Shibuya—this is thousands upon thousands of impressions consolidated into mass and sensation; countless participants within the colony—each with their own unique curse signature, shape and density and dexterity that’s inherent only to its owner.

Most of it is inherently unfamiliar. Satoru tracks curse traces zigzagging across the desolate, smoking-wreckage landscape. Splotchy reds, noisy magentas, sticky tar-blacks. They’re not so familiar, except—

Satoru’s breath stocks in his throat without him meaning for it to. There’s the lone imprint which overlaps others; evenly trod, headed straight, evidently cautious in pursuit—and overwhelmingly present.

It's hot pink, effervescent and glaring. It tracks sloppily, leaks across and into the rest of the standout signatures due only to sheer amount. It’s impressively meticulous. Sadly it doesn’t matter; its owner could reign it in with millimetre precision, could stalk further into the territory as painstakingly as a hunting dog caught on a scent trail, and it still wouldn’t matter for its sheer abundance.

Okkotsu Yūta is a homing beacon—blinding and overwhelming (Satoru’d implored him to work on reigning his cursed energy in, but alas; he supposes he can’t fault him at this point) where he shines a brilliant path through the derelict cityscape.
