Soshiro is self-aware to a point. He knows that his jealousy is not normal, that his entire career could be at stake if anyone found out about the secret cameras in your hallway, that there are lines drawn and that no one can know how badly he wants to cross them. Still, the heart wants what the heart wants. Is it so bad for a man to want to court his love? Even if the courting is a little... unorthodox. Intense.

How do you meet him?

As busy as he is, Soshiro doesn't have much space or time to meet new people. Maybe you see him every day at a cafe he frequents, or, my personal favourite, you're a childhood friend that'd been with him ever since he'd been struggling to carve out his own space in the Force. I don’t see him being easily able to fall for someone he works with. He seems to keep work and personal stuff very separate.

How likely will he kidnap his darling?

Perhaps a 4-5/10. It’s not very likely, seeing as he’s not at home that often and really would defeat the purpose. He’d prefer it if you had the freedom to escape in case of a kaiju attack, and anyway it’s not like there’s anywhere in Japan you can escape to out of his reach. Don’t underestimate the power of a vice-captain. :)

How difficult is it to escape from him? How does he restrain his darling? How does he deal with attempted escape?

Once again, I don’t really see kidnapping in his books, but I do feel like Soshiro would have some moments where he wants you by his side. When you’re relaxing together, he won’t like it even if you get up to use the bathroom for a moment. He’ll follow you from room to room if he has to, so don’t expect to get rid of him that easily.

If you’re trying to escape Tokyo, he’ll find some way or another to be in your area for work. It’s always best to yield to him and not make a fuss, if you don’t want anything to happen to your reputation or job.

How easy is it to trick, deceive, or manipulate him?

Not very easy. Soshiro is a very perceptive person, so even at the slightest inkling that you’re about to bolt, he’s already wound himself around you and put himself between the door and you. He lets all your gaslighting and false fawning fly over his head, but really he’d be lying if he said he didn’t enjoy it. You’re trying so hard and giving him so much attention, it’s endearing.

What kind of punishments would he use?

Not quite a punishment, but he’d definitely use sex to remind you who really has the power here. He doesn’t really see the value in punishing or harming you, especially since his presence alone is usually enough to intimidate you into behaving. Soshiro isn’t nearly that cruel.

How does he deal with rivals, or perceived rivals?

Who in their right mind would want to cross paths with a vice-captain? If they’re crazy enough, usually seeing Soshiro himself is enough to scare them off. He ups his frequency of patrols in that area, making sure they see him over and over again until they get the message. Or some firm handshakes and well-placed words work too. Again, who wants to cross a vice-captain when he always has those katanas on his belt?

How easy is it to make him mad? What does his anger look like?

Soshiro gets fired up, but not really mad. Huffy, maybe. But anger isn’t common. He’s still a mature individual, at the end of the day… mostly.

Does he see you as above, beneath, or equal to him?

Equal to him, for the most part. He does sometimes think that you have trouble looking after yourself and wants to give you a hand, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he's looking down on you. In fact quite the opposite - Soshiro wants your life to be as easy as you'll let him make it.

How determined is he for you to love him, or is he content just having you?

It comes and goes, I imagine. Logically (if anything about his obsession can be called logical) he knows he should be content with just having you around him and keeping you safe, but subconsciously, Soshiro thinks you should love him back, at least eventually. You can tide him over with just paying him attention, however, like playing with his hair or giving him kisses on the cheek. Small prices to pay compared to a Soshiro at the end of his rope.

General perverseness: How sexual is he? What's his drive like? Touchy?

They say that sporty women have more stamina (or are more sexual, I don't quite remember), and maybe the same applies to Soshiro Hoshina. He loves the sex - it blows off steam for him, and it's much more fun than taking it out on a punching bag or a kaiju or whatnot. He can go for as long as you want, and even further, until you're boneless and can barely remember your own name. Meanwhile he's just wiping perspiration from his forehead and snuggling up to you like nothing just happened.

Soshiro tends to be a bit touchy even outside of sex. Touching the inside of your wrist to keep you close, or physically turning you around instead of telling you to, or tapping you on the shoulder to get your attention. All the hallmarks of someone who has physical touch as their love language.

Thinking about two sides of the same alpha coin Clark and Dan. You mentioned Dan and Lex don't have an as instinctual of a relationship as Bruce and Clark, but what if it's just instinctual in another way.

Clark is very protective, he's not agressive, but he is definitely a defender, a protector of the pack (rip Clark in TNW you did your best). Thus when translating to activities with Bruce it is more agressive and physical, that's just how that relates. I think that's why Clark leans into the role of Pack Alpha so well too.

But Dan isn't as physical. He has the insticts and he definitely can protect, but that is not his first go to response. He makes sure everyone is ok and in a space where they can move (kind of like how the strongest wolf in a pack will trail behind the pack when moving to make sure the young and sick aren't ambushed from the back and to make sure the pack is kept together and safe as opposed to clark's mama bear approach). Dan tends to lean more into the caring side of alpha instincts, the ones to make sure that his mate and pups and pack are taken care of, not in the same way that a beta would though. Dan truly embodies the instincts of a sire, and Lex doesn't necessarily want that (or not want that, he just envies a relationship like bruce and clark), but it's what he needs. Dan is instinctual providing Lex the stability and security he needs after having been abused by his sire and then uncertain about his role in the pack.

(after typing all this out I've realized that Dan and Bruce have the same type of instincts just in their respective a/b/o dynamic, and the same with Clark and Lex. Which really os oh so fascinating and just that leads to such interesting thoughts about that pack breakdown especially when Jason tries to bring in Roy to meet his parents and his 2 step-dads)

Generally I think Dean is big on acts of service so whenever he wants to woo Sam he’d make all his favorite foods, even the ones he hates. When it comes to more romantic things, I see Dean flirting his way through hunts and research. Sam would be at the table working through his third book while Dean leans on him or across his lap to “read” with him. Sometimes he’ll catch something in the lore he can make a flirty joke out of. Once Dean gets more confident in their relationship he’d look for hunts where they can pretend to be a couple or would generally require them to be more affectionate.

Sam’s a nerd as we know so anytime he makes a comment about something unfamiliar that seems interesting or fun (food, a sex thing, a weapon etc.) Dean catalogues it and finds a way to get, make or do what Sam wants but it’s always a while later when Sam doesn’t expect it. it always leads to very good sex<3 More down the line when Dean’s comfortable, he would find hunts or events that need him to dress him up which usually means more feminine. Sam wants to devour him every time he does this. Dean also starts using some of Sam’s shower/hair products and wears his clothes more so he smells like Sam at least a little all the time.

Things Dean would want include kisses, like, all the time. Dean’s dream is getting kisses everytime he makes Sam smile or happy or when Dean does something well. He wants reward kisses! He never says that though. Sam doesn’t quite do that but he would surprise kiss Dean often, just whenever he looks at Dean and can’t contain it. Little cheek kiss before he goes to shower, deep gentle kiss when Dean’s cooking in his apron, and so on.

Dean craves Sam’s touch constantly. If he could have it his way, they would always be holding hands, or brushing against each other, or (Dean’s favorite) Sam’s hand on the small of Dean’s back. He wants it casually and all the time. Occasionally Sam will rest his hand on Dean’s thigh when Dean’s driving and Dean loves it. Dean definitely would struggle to admit this but one of his favorite spots is on Sam’s lap. It just feels so warm and safe and right. Also food is a big one for Dean and Sam knows this. Gifting him his favorite foods will warm his entire chest every time<3 I could keep going on and on about all the ways Dean and Sam would want in their relationship/romance but sadly my break is over so enjoy this for now!

Oof, I definitely wish I knew that, because I could really use the information for fic-writing purposes, but unfortunately, I don’t. I suppose no one knows the whole truth, except maybe some lorekeeper at Warhorse, assuming they have one.

That said, there are a few in-game hints that could be used if someone wants to form their own headcanons.

Here are some of the tidbits I’ve used while shaping my personal take on Ištván’s background for the fic I’m currently writing, probably in a fairly random order. Just keep in mind that I’m going to veer pretty heavily into headcanon territory here, and I’m not claiming any of this is canon. Just some random thoughts put together.

Thanks for asking, though! 🖤 I just love to yap about Ištván and KCD in general, I’m just usually a bit too shy to share my thoughts unprompted.

(It's going to be a pretty long post, so I'm going to put the whole thing under a cut.)

So, what we do know for certain is that Ištván was born in Banat, his parents were killed by the Turks, and his father had a fortress, which somewhat implies that Ištván was originally highborn.

I think this is where we have a gap we can fill with whatever we want and veer deep into headcanon territory, since he trails off and never finishes the sentence. Personally, I feel like it's quite heavily implied that whatever happened to him after his family was slain and his home destroyed must have been deeply traumatizing for him. I know the devşirme theory is quite popular, though I believe becoming a war captive and ending up in regular slavery is just as plausible an option.

I don’t know if it’s just me, though probably not based on what I’ve seen, but I get the feeling that Ištván is kind of dancing around the issue here, despite usually being all about tough talk. To me, that suggests there's deep trauma behind it, likely connected to sexual abuse.

I also believe that what Henry says to him, "You pretend to be cruel, but you take good care of Erik. Someone must have really hurt you, am I right?" also points in that direction.

Another thing we know for certain is that, at some point, he fought the Turks, as we hear from both Ištván himself and Erik (in KCD1), and that he also fought in the Battle of Nicopolis in 1396. There's still a lot left open to individual interpretation, but I think one possible reading is that the events at Nicopolis led to Ištván, who might’ve been just an ordinary mercenary back then, becoming personally acquainted with Sigismund.

I imagine it's also possible that Sigismund rewarded him for his service by elevating him to the nobility, despite the battle itself ending in disaster. Saving your king’s life has to count for something, right?

I think this bit is also interesting to take into account. More often than not, Ištván seems to look for connections between himself and Henry, but here he draws a rare distinction. The way I see it, this doesn't necessarily contradict the possibility of Ištván being noble by birth. I could see it implying that he simply lost that privilege at some point in his life, likely when his family was slain and his home destroyed.

I imagine noble blood doesn't count for much when you are all alone and have lost everything. With his family gone, and the possibility of him being taken into the Ottoman Empire and kept there for some time, would he even have had any way to prove he was of noble origin? Even if he had surviving relatives, they might not recognize him after so many years and could be inclined to think he was just some impostor trying to get his hands on family wealth or something.

I don't know, just some food for thought.

And then there's this small detail. I just find it interesting how he says "the noblemen," not "we noblemen." Again, we can't be sure whether he's simply trying to influence Henry by highlighting their supposed similarities, or whether he genuinely relates to Henry here, even though he's a nobleman himself. It could just as well be both, I suppose. This doesn't have to mean anything, but I wanted to include it because it supports my personal interpretation that Ištván might personally not relate much to those nobles who have led easier lives than he likely has.

And from there, we come to another aspect I’ve been thinking about lately, one that’ll probably need its own post at some point: taking a sociolinguistic approach to Ištván’s background. I don’t have the screenshots at hand to support my theory yet, but it seems to me that he can switch between appearing as a rough mercenary and an eloquent nobleman, depending on what the situation calls for. The clearest example of this, I think, is the way he code-switches during the prison scene in Nebakov while speaking with Sir Jaromier.

This doesn’t have to mean anything in particular, either. We could just draw a parallel between Ištván and, say, the Dry Devil and leave it at that, but as a language nerd, it’s just something that’s caught my attention. If anyone’s interested, I could ramble some more about it.
