Regardless of his forewarning, Lando’s sudden arrival at your house had taken you by surprise. You steadied your nerves before pulling the gold-plated handle down to open the grand wooden door. Lando’s eyes lit up upon the sight of you, and he quickly pulled you into his grasp. His muscular arms encircled your waist, tugging you taut to his chest as he spun you around in an elegant circle. With a rather loud smacking sound, he stole a kiss away from you.

“I’ve waited so long to do that,” He spoke with a cheesy, boyish grin. His curls framed his face, and his smile lit up his features perfectly. He was the definition of handsome. You giggled as you combed through his soft locks.

How to run The Sims 3 with DXVK & Reshade (Direct3D 9.0c)

Today I am going to show you guys how to install Reshade and use Direct3D 9.0c (D3D9) instead of Vulkan as rendering API.

This tutorial is based on @nornities and @desiree-uk's awesome guide on "How to use DXVK with The Sims 3", with the goal of increasing compatibility between DXVK and Reshade. For users not interested in using Reshade, you may skip this tutorial.

If you followed nornities and desiree-uk's guide, it is strongly recommended that you start from scratch, meaning you should uninstall DXVK AND Reshade completely. Believe me when I say this: it will save you a lot of time, frustration, and make your life so much easier.

For the purpose of this tutorial, I am on patch 1.69.47 and running EA App on Windows 10, but it should work for version 1.67.2 on Steam and discs, too. This tutorial does not cover GShade.

Before we start

Backup your files, even the entire folder (Program Files\EA Games\The Sims 3\Game\Bin) if you want to be extra safe; you will thank yourself later. If you do not wish to backup the entire folder, at least backup the following:

reshade-presets

reshade-shaders

Reshade.ini

Options.ini (Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3)

Keep them somewhere secure, for your peace of mind (and sanity).

Done? Great stuff, let us begin!

Step 1:

If you installed DXVK following nornite and desiree-uk's guide, go to the bin folder and delete the following files to fully uninstall DXVK, we are starting from scratch:

d3d9.dll

TS3.dxvk-cache

dxvk.conf

TS3_d3d9.log (or TS3W_d3d9.log)

Step 2:

If you already have Reshade on your PC, uninstall it using this: https://reshade.me/downloads/ReShade_Setup_X.X.X.exe (replace X.X.X with version number)

Step 3:

Perform a clean install of Reshade (I am using the latest version - 6.4.1 at the time of writing). Please note that you need a version no older than 4.5.0 or this method will not work. Choose DirectX9, click next.

Once the installation is complete, you should see a "d3d9.dll" file inside The Sims 3's bin folder (Program Files\EA Games\The Sims 3\Game\Bin):

It may all seem familiar thus far. Indeed, this is how we installed Reshade in the past before using DXVK, but here comes the tricky part:

Step 4:

Create a new folder outside of The Sims 3's game folder (I created it on my C drive), name it "dxvk" or whatever else you like. Remember where you saved this folder, we will return to it later.

Step 5:

Now we need Reshade to load the next dll in order to chain Reshade with DXVK. Click on the search bar, and type in "View advanced system settings".

Click on "Environment Variables..."

Under "User variables", click "New..."

In the new pop-up window, find "Variable name:" and type in:

RESHADE_MODULE_PATH_OVERRIDE

for "Variable value:", paste in the directory that leads to the folder we created earlier. Once you are done, hit OK, and then hit OK again to save the changes made.

You can use Command Prompt to check if this new environment variable has been registered by entering:

echo %RESHADE_MODULE_PATH_OVERRIDE%

It should return you the folder's location. If not, make sure you have typed in the variable name correctly and confirm the folder's location.

Step 6:

Download DXVK (version 2.3.1) from here: https://github.com/doitsujin/DXVK/releases/tag/v2.3.1 and unzip "dxvk-2.3.1.tar.gz" (I use 7-Zip, but winRAR works, too). Remember to choose x32, and move only "d3d9.dll" to the folder we made earlier.

Now we have two "d3d9.dll" files, one from Reshade (lives in the bin folder), and the other from DXVK (in this new folder, outside of The Sims 3 game folder).

Step 7:

Download "dxvk.conf" here: https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/blob/master/dxvk.conf delete everything inside, and enter the following:

d3d9.textureMemory = 1 d3d9.presentInterval = 1 d3d9.maxFrameRate = 60 dxvk.hud = devinfo

Ctrl + S to save the document.

The first 3 lines are taken from @nornities and @desiree-uk's guide.

The last line is only for debugging purposes. Due to the inconvenient location occupied by the HUD (top left corner of your screen), it should be removed once the installation is successful.

Step 8:

Drag "dxvk.conf" into the bin folder, where Reshade's "d3d9.dll", "TS3.exe", and "TS3W.exe" all live.

Step 9:

Now fire up the game and check if both are showing up:

Lastly, check for “TS3.dxvk-cache” in the bin folder:

If it is there, congratulations! You have successfully installed DXVK and Reshade utilising D3D9 as API! You can now go to "dxvk.conf" and remove its last line "dxvk.hud = devinfo" and have fun! :)

Hope this tutorial isn't too confusing, the last thing I want is to over-complicate things. If you still need some help, comment down below or send me a DM/ask, I'll try and troubleshoot with you to the best of my ability.

Virgil frowned and scrubbed out 4 bars of the bass line. Too derivative.

Virgil sighed and closed the manuscript. “What are you concerned about John?”

“It’s HER. He’s… getting too… involved. What if…? Look what happened before.”

If he couldn’t already tell from the furrowed brow, John’s uncharacteristic incoherence would speak volumes about how worried he was. And Virgil sympathised, he really did. Worried-about-Scott was a fairly constant state of mind for him too. But this time… he just didn’t see it.

“John, he’s… happy. He’s on form, he’s fit, he’s enjoying himself - that rescue yesterday? He was on fire, honestly. I thought Allie might ask for his autograph at some point. He’s relaxed. He’s laughing again. I think he might actually be sleeping occasionally.” Virgil paused for a moment and experienced a rush of thankfulness as he processed exactly how relieved he was by how things had changed in recent weeks.

“EXACTLY Virgil. We’ve only just got him back! What if she… triggers something? Or… or breaks his heart? What if next time we don’t get him back?”

“I don’t think she’s any more likely to break his heart than anyone else. Remember the Ruby Summers debacle?”

John cringed. That had been a difficult month for anyone within a 2 mile radius of their eldest brother.

“If he’s interested in her romantically he’s moving unusually slowly for him. You know what he’s like. It’s entirely possible he’s just trying to be supportive - they clearly have something in common. He told me she understands things he can’t explain. Don’t you think it’s good for him to have a friend who does?”

“But…”

“Either something will come of it or it won’t, John. And if he gets hurt we’ll be here. Like we would for any of us.”

8 hours of mudslide hell and Scott was ready to drop. Debrief was postponed until they’d all got some sleep and he hastened to the privacy of his room, opening up the messages app on his comm as he did so. A notification popped up - 15 unread messages.

A little warm glow nestled at the base of his rib cage and he smiled, deciding to go and sit on the balcony under the stars to read them. Maybe with a small measure of whisky. As he poured it he remembered she’d been about to ask him something.

He sat back and toasted the moon then opened the chat as he took a sip.

His blood ran cold.

He put the glass down with a shaking hand and sank his teeth into his fist, desperately trying not to panic. He needed to react calmly and slowly and not like the psychopath she clearly thought he was.

He scanned the messages again and they were even worse on second reading.

Slow be damned. He’d already apparently ignored her for hours. He fired back a message.

Estera I promise this isn’t what you think it is.

I understand why you think it is but it isn’t.

Please let me explain.

He downed the whisky and started pacing the balcony.

I haven’t had you followed.

I don’t ‘want anything’ from you.

Please believe me.

The messages remained unread.

“EOS!!”

“Hello Scott”

“EOS which directory did you use to look up Estera’s address?”

“I didn’t use a directory, Scott. I already knew the address.”

Scott closed his eyes. The school staff records. Of course she didn’t need to look it up.

He hadn’t considered EOS would even need to do anything… EOS-ey. It hadn’t occurred to him Estera wouldn’t be in the public directory, most people were these days. Those who weren’t… there was usually a reason.

And now he’d scared her. Which was categorically the last thing on the planet he wanted to do.

He checked again and the messages were still unread. He resisted the urge to throw his comm into the pool and walked quietly back into his room to place it on the bedside table. And then very calmly sat on the side of the bed, picked up the fluffiest cushion in his arsenal and screamed a string of curses into it.

“Scott you are distressed? I am sorry I didn’t mean to upset you. What did I do wrong? Can I fix it please?”

She actually sounded upset. He’d somehow managed to upset the emotionless AI. At what point had John programmed ‘shaky tearful voice’ into his robot friend?

He placed the cushion carefully on his knees, pressed his lips together and shook his head. He opened the message app again. Still nothing.

“No, EOS, you can’t fix it. Please leave me alone now. I need to think.”

Alan slid across the kitchen floor in his socked feet, cracking the seal on the instant noodles and popping the microwave door in one slick movement. Nice. He put them inside and set the timer before stretching with a loud yawn and a satisfied grin. It wasn’t gourmet but fast food was food and it was fast. 13 seconds later he leapt backwards in surprise as with a loud POOF the packet exploded into flames.

Huh. Maybe the microwaveable noodles weren’t microwaveable after all. He must have messed up and put the wrong kind in. Oops.

Ok, fine. He grabbed one of the slower, ‘just add boiling water’ type instead and flicked the switch on the kettle. The fuse blew immediately. He pouted. Why wouldn’t the universe let him have noodles tonight?

The cleaning bot whirred into life and threw itself down the stairs with a clatter.

Then all the lightbulbs went out one by one.

He stood in the dark, trying not to freak out when he heard a faint, almost childish sob from the lounge and did his best not to whimper as he backed into the corner.

He opened his comm and whispered in a definitely calm and not at all terrified way:

“John… John…? I think we got a haunting situation going on. Please help.”

John answered his little brother’s call whilst dodging flying bagels and consequently he didn’t entirely understand Alan’s whispered SOS the first time.

Taking cover in the shower cubicle, he asked him to repeat it. The shower switched on at full power and minimum temperature.

“EOS! Please! Can we talk about this?”

There was silence and the lights flickered.

“Alan, I think I know what’s happened. There’s no ghost, I promise. I’ll call you back ok?”

There was a whimper from the other end of the line and an eerily similar one from out in the gravity ring. He poked his head around the door and hoped that this time around he wasn’t about to be crushed to death.

Scott typed and deleted messages over and over.

What was the point if she wasn’t picking them up?

Why didn’t she have her phone? Had something happened?

She’d been ill… what if it had been more serious than she thought? What if… what if she needed help and nobody was there?

He itched to jump into One and to just go and CHECK. But that would obviously be a terrible idea in the current circumstances.

He glared at his comm, willing the ticks to turn green. And then startled as they did.

Nothing happened for what felt like hours but might have been only moments. Then

He waited, hardly daring to breathe.

Ok… first I’m so sorry for going quiet, we had a long rescue and there just wasn’t chance to check messages. I wasn’t deliberately ignoring you. I hadn’t actually read your question as it popped up just before we launched, if I had I would have answered it as it’s a good question.

I messed up. A call came in yesterday as I was putting the order through and I had to launch One to rescue some climbers but I didn’t know how long it would take.

She’s great but she takes things very literally and I did not explain adequately. It was my fault.

John’s hologram popped up looking concerned. Scott sighed and bit back an impatient comment.

“I’m fine, John.”

“EOS…”

“Is tattling on me again I assume?”

“No… she’s having some kind of breakdown about upsetting you.”

“Oh. Perfect.”

“What’s up?”

“Personal thing. It’s ok. Don’t worry about it.”

John looked like he was going to argue.

“Please? Just… let me deal with my own stuff ok? I will ask if I need anything. What’s up with EOS? Tell her it’s ok - the misunderstanding was my fault not hers.”

John looked over his shoulder and dropped his voice such that Scott had to stop pacing to hear properly.

“She had a small… tantrum, in the kitchen. I believe Alan is hiding in the cupboard under the sink, could you go and rescue him?”

He’d like to say he hadn’t been checking for new messages on a 3 minutely basis but it wouldn’t be strictly accurate.

He’d achieved a lot in between the compulsive refreshing though. First he got his big brother face on and coaxed Alan out of the cupboard. Following a brief conversation with John about toning down the “Do Not Upset Scott” aspect of her programming, he reassured EOS she was still his favourite niece and set about replacing the fuse in the kettle. He powered through the GDF paperwork then made precisely 74 chocolate chip pancakes because pancakes were definitely an acceptable substitute for sleep.

3 hours and 26 minutes later there was a soft ping from his comm.

Hello Scott

A soft voice in the back of his mind that sounded a lot like Virgil murmured “wait…” so he bit his lip and sat on his hands. The “is typing” symbol pulsed at him maddeningly.

I don’t know what you meant by having “words” but please don’t sack your PA or anything.

Oh, no, I wouldn’t do that. It’s a training issue and thus my responsibility to sort out.

On the American Election

Ok, long post time.

I know a lot of my fellow Americans as well as others are probably scared and angry right now. You have every right to be, but this is not the time to be assigning blame. If you want to blame any one group it’s centrists who willingly didn’t vote because of the staggering amount of American apathy in our country. What it’s time for now is planning, because that’s all we can do at this point in time. All we can do is look forward and ask “What now?” What happens now that we have a fascist nazi possibly elected as the leader of our country? All of my marginalized siblings out there will know that if we give up we are fucked. We will not survive if we give up. This part of the message goes out to any adults who may be reading this: we, the children of America, need your help. As minor’s there is very little, not nothing, but very little we can do. If we are to survive it will have to be on infrastructure built with your help. Our fight isn’t over, and it might not be within our lifetime but that doesn’t mean we stop fighting. We keep fighting, we continue to vote small elections, we organize, we keep ourselves strong as a community. Above it all we lift each other up, we have to take care of each other because the power we might be under in 2 months will not take care of us. They may even seek to destroy us based on our color, creed, ability, or orientation or any other number of things that make you undesirable to the right-wing party.

Finally, remember you are loved. Remember there are people who will fight for you because you matter. Things may seem hopeless now but as I said the moment we lay down and give up is the moment they win, and not a second before that, and if we never do they will never win. Stay safe everyone, I love you all and though I may not be a religious person I am praying for you, for us.

It waits there, a gelatinous blob of flesh-eating mucus, stuck to the sides of the corridors of air, filling caverns and passages alike. It preys on elk and beast alike, wrapping tentacles of wobbly, decaying flesh around its victims, suffocatng them even as the mucus burns like acid, melting the flesh and devouring the meat of its meals. It has no mouth but is said to have six stomachs, and is ever-hungry.

wonder(ed) - Midnight Madness

She tried talking through the fog and the haze, but no words were coming as she was dragged through the streets. She heard one of the guards yell to make way for prisoners, and she wondered who he was talking about.

lovely - Midnight Madness

“There’s a lovely little tavern nearby where they can get more stable legs for the journey ahead. I believe you ship workers call it…liquid courage?” She flashed him a smooth smile as her plan dawned on him.

sheer - Abracadabra

A curved control panel jutted from one side of the room, filling up half the space with sheer bulk. Steam whipped my face as I approached it, rickety panels sliding back to reveal a radar, display screen, and speaker grill.

tiresome tired - Midnight Madness

But somehow it seemed that the groaning, weary sighs of her Qwakas weren’t quite as tired as they normally were. Almost like…instead of being disappointed, he was putting on an act of disappointment.

manic (ehhh came up empty)

silver - Abracadabra

The blade’s edge looked silver but the metal itself looked foreign, like it was forged from a metal you couldn’t find on earth.

Her fit died down, wisps of golden hair drifting around her face.

daylight (they don't really have a sun or days as we understand them so I went with 'light' that would have basically been daylight had it been on earth) - Midnight Madness

Every beat of the wings around her pushed her closer and closer, the light growing brighter and brighter. A dark, blank glow. Then a green-blue tint. The color grew, shifting from blue to green to blue to purple, changing and shifting the closer and closer they came to the surface.

A sudden crack shook the ship, everyone in the hallway suddenly shaken around like leaves in the wind.

Creak(ing) - Abracadabra

As we walked, the ship almost seemed to breathe, complete with the walls shifting and creaking despite the fact that it hadn’t moved yet.

Crunch - Abracadabra

There was a sudden sickening crunch that I tried not to think about before Kashi answered. “Help, yes. Get us passage on a flying horror story, no.”

Click(ing) - Abracadabra

A long coat billowed out dramatically behind him as he strode over to me, the buckles around his leather boots clicking with every step.

Apparently Miles’ understanding of a kitchen was a rusty metal room with a small island counter, two Bunsen burners, a five-gallon water bottle with a spout, and a small round table shoved up against the wall.

ember (unfortunately, nothing)

damp wet - Midnight Madness

This building was not like the ones back home. No spongy walls, no living lights. Instead everything was solid and smoothed. The walls didn’t breathe, were dark and stiff. Waves upon waves of wet, stiff leaves were plastered together, the light coming from small holes cut into the walls at the top, small circles the only air and light allowed in the space.

He took a deep breath. “I might know a few. Ones far more likely to be closer to fact than anything he can tell you.”

teeth - Abracadabra

She growled, her wolf form coming through the human mask enough to show off a set of long chompers, her meal no longer squirming between her teeth.

Today was the first step in her journey to abandon her duties as a high-born and seek her freedom.

The ship cracked again, a thunder noise that was closer this time and sliced through his words as if whatever was outside refused to let him finish.

There were no handholds here, the side of the giant plant wall smoothed and trimmed on a regular basis, polished with a hardening lacquer to ensure it stood up to storms and drought alike.

"Why Decimera?" 'Dec-' meaning 10 + 'chimera' = 'Decimera'. 10 souls in one body who are all doomed to constantly live through partial ego death caused by all being blurry at best with 2 or more fronting at any given time.

"Is there anything I can do to help?" Not really. Building an RSS Feed for a Static Site

Lover's tree! Lover's tree! I have crafted an RSS feed for the first time! It was a pain in the ass, but I'm glad I learned how to do it.

This page was indispensable, but it doesn't have every part of what I learned, so I'll write my own tutorial below. Specifically, I used this with the Zonelets system, but it should work fine for most static sites.

First, make an .xml file. I just titled mine feed.xml and put it in the same directory as my blog.

Copy and paste the following into your xml file.

Between the <channel></channel> tags, we are going to do two things. First, we have to detail what our blog actually is.

Change the stuff in pink to be what it's supposed to be.
