➥ The process of getting over Bonnibel after the Glass Kingdom incident was excruciating.

The pain never truly went away, neither did the feelings, though Marceline would never admit that out loud. With Bonnibel, there was someone who wasn't scared or offput by her demonic and vampiric attributes, and who wasn't trying to escape her. Until they were proven wrong in that department.

That's why she had started dating Ash. He was as monstrous as they were, so he couldn't turn on them for that. As toxic and horrible as Ash was to Marceline, if he hadn't sold off Hambo, she likely would have never seen past his manipulative niceties. They also would never admit to that. She doesn't like to talk about Ash with anyone. The fact that Finn and Jake had met him was more than overwhelming for her; she couldn't imagine if Bonnibel or Simon had to ever meet him. Yikes!

Someone records a lovesick Red Hood just ranting about how women who can break him in half are stupidly sexy and posts it to social media. #RelatableRedHood is trending within the week.

(It got long bc I got excited 😭)

The first video goes like this: It starts off with a woman clad in tight leather and a black helmet single-handedly fighting against a group of five men. She fought like a beast, with weapons and guns and on the occasion, her legs as she kicked a man so hard that he had puked his guts out. At one point, she had picked up one by the neck and tossed him to the wall.

The phone camera, shaky and quiet, then turned to face the infamous Red Hood's side profile. He didn't seem to notice that he was being recorded. He had his hand on his helmet-covered chin as he then said, "Do you think if I ask, she'll kill me with her thighs?"

That was when the video cut off. It was posted at 1:32 AM in the morning by an anonymous account with only one tag #RelatableRedHood.

It went stupidly viral. After that, there were more and more videos with the same tag, taken in more and more ridiculous ways to avoid the Red Hood noticing. Gothamites, particular ones from Crime Alley, were all having a great time watching their resident crime lord vigilante make a fool of himself in front of his hot assistant, who hadn't shown any reaction to the recent fame she gained as the woman who owned the legs that could make Red Hood beg for death.

The #RelatableRedHood videos always featured the same thing. Wolf would go about her business and do absolutely nothing out of the ordinary, or Wolf would complete an impossibly awesome feat with her intelligence or skills in weaponry and fighting, and Red Hood would then absolutely lose his mind afterwards.

Viewers both agreed to his thoughts and laughed themselves silly as they watched the infamous crime lord show just how head over heels in love he was with his assistant. Reaction images and memes went viral as the Red Hood simped over his assistant.

Video after video popped up and they were all clearly taken by goons within the Red Hood's gang due to sheer proximity and brilliant timing. Although videos came out somewhat rarely, probably due to Red Hood's perceptiveness, Gothamites gobbled up each one eagerly.

It all reached to a peak when a livestream link from the Official Robins account was posted at midnight.

In it, the Red Hood could be seen ranting and raving to himself in his office, smacking his helmet-covered forehead. An invisible camera captured it all. "Dammit!! Where are these videos coming from?! Who the fuck keeps making them?!"

He was presumably on call because after a moment, he answered an inaudible voice with a shout, "Like hell I do! Of course take it down! Why the hell would I want Wolf to see them?! She doesn't even know my feelings for her!"

Another pause. And then, "I'm not going to confess!! Why would she even like me anyways?!"

Viewers felt sympathetic for their favorite crime lord, but curiously, the livestream did not end as Red Hood continued to pace and mutter to himself angrily.

Their questions were answered as the door to the room opened and Red Hood hurriedly sat down in his seat, looking up at the door. The camera then captured the sight of Wolf striding into the room. She held papers in one hand and a coffee cup in the other.

Red Hood, silent and tense, clicked on a button, presumably disconnecting the call and then reached for the things she was holding. Wolf avoided his hands, placing the items on the table before she detached part of her helmet and placing it next to the papers.

Both the viewers and Red Hood were confused. More images of Red Hood's bewildered posture on the livestream appeared on the internet with #RelatableRedHood, but people were still focused on Wolf's strange actions.

The camera did not reveal any part of Wolf's face as she left the disconnected piece of metal on the side . She went around Red Hood's desk and sat on his lap confidently as the Red Hood froze like a deer in headlights. She took off his helmet without any resistance, tossed it to the floor, and then grabbed him by the lapels to kiss him senseless.

Cheers and celebrations erupted all over Gotham City as if they had suddenly won the lottery.

Unbeknownst to the Gothamites who were nothing but civilian viewers obsessing over Red Hood and Wolf's romance, Red Robin and Oracle were celebrating in the Watchtower with the rest of the Batfamily, who were all cheering loudly as they closed the livestream and then celebrated for successfully bringing together their brother and his crush.

application in HP world building a: inconsistencies in the text b: what this means for magical history (feat: Ur-Fascism by Umberto Eco)

1: misconceptions of magic and witchcraft in western europe

there's a huge cultural misunderstanding of how western europe thought about "magic" and "witchcraft" pre-modern era, including the function of the witch trials. laws against magic were specific, and usually involved the practicer causing certain harm or worshipping pagan gods.

folk magic was practiced across cultures and across the centuries by the lower classes. ritualized chanting, amulets, prayers to saints, rituals of protection (sometimes from witchcraft), and medicine all contained elements of knowledge beyond the observable.

most people would have considered something condemnable and witchcraft if the power came from the Devil. other practices that we lump into that specific version of witchcraft would have been miracles, or cunning, or maybe a prayer answered.

it went against church doctrine to believe magic existed in any form for much of this time, but we know that doesn't mean it wasn't still part of the cultures.

the witch trials, which peaked in the early modern era, were simply targeting women. there was a rise in unmarried women, women were marrying older, and nunneries were being shut down due to the protestant reformation. i've spoken before about how the conception of what a woman is was changing rapidly in the early modern era.

2: application in HP worldbuilding

a: inconsistencies in the text

this is why i get irritated when i see people take the persecution of magical folk as presented in HP text at face value. there is no historical basis for this until the early modern witch trials, which is stated in the text to not have a big impact on magical folk's safety.

to quote a history of magic:

"Non-magic people (more commonly known as Muggles) were particularly afraid of magic in medieval times, but not very good at recognising it. On the rare occasion that they did catch a real witch or wizard, burning had no effect whatsoever. The witch or wizard would perform a basic Flame-Freezing Charm and then pretend to shriek with pain while enjoying a gentle, tickling sensation. Indeed, Wendelin the Weird enjoyed being burned so much that she allowed herself to be caught no less than forty-seven times in various disguises."

so, which is it? Muggle suddenly turned on magical folk and scared them into hiding with their persecution, or they were no real threat. we know jkr just needed a reason for the magical world to be secret, but for those of us who choose to take this way too seriously, this is an inconsistency.

b: what this means for magical history

an inconsistency that reminds me of two components of fascism as described by Umberto Eco. one is "obsession with a plot", an obsessive fear that some outside enemy is trying to harm your group, and two, the creation of enemies who were "at the same time too strong and too weak".

not to say the WW is fascist. i think this comparison makes it clear that the mythology around magical history is a way to maintain power and control over the population. the mythology creates a justification for the SoS and later the development of pureblood supremacy, which i view as a form of nationalism.

i don't think we really know what happened to cause the SoS. i suspect it was due to the witch trials, sure, but also because of the same anxieties and upheavals that caused the witch trials. like all things, it was fucking complicated.

we have pureblood propaganda in the supplementary text in the form of the sacred 28. this was published anonymously in the 1930s. no sources. meaningless. who was included and who was excluded was arbitrary. i don't think it's a stretch to say there is more historical myth-making going on in the text. we'll never know bc jkr hates history and is horrible at writing it!

overall, headcanon what you want, world build what you want, but it is useful to identify authoritarian and propagandist elements in the text you're analyzing. people seem to fall for the WW in-universe propaganda often, in pursuit of making blood supremacists more sympathetic. i'd rather we not.

The sound is faint. It’s carried by the wind and melded with rustling flora, the trees outside her window and the grass and brush scattered around the area. Walls of stone trap it, adding a slight echo and directing it into their open window. A window framed by billowing curtains, they’re a bit thicker than Y/n’s old ones. A bit better at insulating during the cold months, but still thin enough to let in daylight even when drawn.

The curtains are a pale teal with golden embroidery about a foot above the bottom. A golden wing great peng leads golden swirls patterned with qingxin flowers. They were a gift when her old ones became worn with holes, something she had lamented once while picking the depicted flowers.

They grow in her garden, but she never has enough.

“Plant more, it’s dangerous for you to come out here alone.”

“But I’m not alone.”

A glaze lily sits in a thin vase on her window sill. It stood out among the white of the qingxin, a blue bulb among the sea of white petals. They only bloom at night. She’d crouched down, careful not to trample the surrounding flowers, and gently caressed the closed petals.

“I should come back tonight.”

“Don’t, it’s going to rain.”

The melody from outside is only enhanced by the breeze and the brush. The soft whistle of a flute carries in from the cliffs nearby. Y/n leans back in her chair.

The gifted curtains brush her shoulder, the flower seems to glow in the moonlight, and through the translucent fabric that shields her from the outside world she can see a blurry silhouette.

She stares at the silhouette, picturing the serene look on his face as he plays. Does he find it calming? Is that why he plays? She’d never asked, maybe because she was so sure he’d never answer.

Xiao was a man of few words, and yet…

The curtains part and the silhouette is replaced by a distant figure, one leg pulled to his chest and the other dangling off the cliff. His flute held to his lips as he played, Y/n couldn’t make out his face from this distance.

The glaze lily swayed in the breeze, its blue and white petals reflecting the moonlight. It had yet to die, a grand feat in her opinion, it hadn’t even begun to wilt.

The music keeps her company. Xiao, keeps her company.

In the dim lantern light she scratches away at paper, penning a poem. It keeps her busy, lulls her to sleep with the music, keeps her mind from the annoyances of tomorrow.

Tomorrow her head would hurt. Tomorrow she would struggle to get up, to pull herself from her bed on what little slip she found. Tomorrow…

“Why are you still awake?”

Y/n looked back to the window sill, the moonlight blocked by a crouched figure. The curtains flutter did not reach as far. She smiled, tired.

His legs entered her room, his foot barely brushing the ground, the other braced on the wall beside it as he raised the flute to his lips again. The window pulled the curtain against him, Y/n laughed.

She slipped from the bed, stopping in front of him.

Slowly, as if asking for permission, she pulled the curtain back and tied it against an anchor in the wall. Xiao stared at her, their eyes met as her hands slid from the soft fabric. A white ribbon held the curtain out of his face as Y/n made her way back to bed.

She pulled her pillow into her chest, resting her head on the edge to watch him. He raised the flute back up, and a peaceful look fell across his face.

The sound was no longer faint. It was no longer carried by the wind, it overpowered the rustling leaves by her window and drowned out the grass and brush. Walls of wood trapped it, and it funneled out of her open window into the night.
