youtube
youtube
『UTR≡CHT』

Ramblings and crazy theory time about GK chap 211 “Furious Shiraishi”
Welcome everyone to what I label THE SHIRAISHI CHAPTER as SHIRAISHI IS AWESOME IN THIS ONE!

But let’s start with order and more exactly by the editor’s note.
Yeah, I normally don’t care about it but I was pointed out by various people as how ‘Asayake wa ame no zenchō’ (朝焼けは雨の前兆。 “Morning glow is a sign of rain.”) is a Japanese way to say that seems to match with ‘Red sky at night, sailors' delight. Red sky at morning, sailors take warning’ which is actually also sort of referenced in the gospel of Matthew:
‘When it is evening, you say, "It will be fair weather; for the sky is red." And in the morning, "It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening."’ [Matthew 16:2b–3]
My gut feeling is that it’s a coincidence, as this is also an old and very common piece of wisdom, but still it’s interesting to see another tie to Matthew’s gospel.
The rain though, likely refers to the ‘rain of arrows’ at the end of the chapter… unless the editor wants to tell us this is the prelude to some serious troubles.
Anyway… let’s now dig into chap 211, ‘Furious Shiraishi’.
It should be early in the morning and Sugimoto is outside the inn, looking thoughtful when Shiraishi joins him. He has clearly drank a lot and a woman is supporting him.
We always knew Shiraishi likes to go to the red district and drink a lot but I wonder if part of why he did it this time is due to the situation they’re in.
Shiraishi had to cope with Kiro’s death and the truth of what the man had done as well as being left to fend on his own when he was used as a target by Vasily and discovering Sugimoto has switched allegiances and joined Tsurumi, which translates in Sugimoto planning to hand Asirpa (and Shiraishi) to the 7th in exchange for 200 yens.
It’s not an easy bunch of things to cope with so I wouldn’t be surprised if Shiraishi has just decided to get himself plastered.
Anyway Shiraishi comments on how Sugimoto can’t fall asleep, which might be Shiraishi’s way to tell him Sugimoto has a guilty conscience tormenting him and then goes on, commenting the soldiers will be there today and Sugimoto will hand Asirpa to them and will become Tsurumi’s pet.
The word he uses to be exact is ‘Kaiinu’ (飼い犬 “Pet dog”).

Shiraishi used that word in the past as well, when he was just introduced, to ask Sugimoto if Asirpa was his ‘Kaiinu’ (飼いイヌ “Pet dog”).

You might remember Sugimoto got angry back then and this is because the word is actually an insulting wordplay that takes advantage of how the last part of the word aINU (アイヌ) is ‘Inu’, which written with this kanji 犬 means “dog”.
In the past I theorized Shiraishi used such word not to insult Asirpa, but to insult Sugimoto for using her as such. Now I wonder if he’s using it again to cause Sugimoto to be reminded of that circumstance and of how he is selling Asirpa and himself to Tsurumi.
Sugimoto isn’t pleased with Shiraishi words but he’s not as angry as back then. He’s sweating and I think that’s because deep down he fears Shiraishi is right and that he’s selling himself and Asirpa off to Tsurumi.
Shiraishi suggests that if Sugimoto were to gang up with Tsurumi, it was better if he were to do it right when he was caught up, which is another veiled jab to how, back then, he and Asirpa had to pull him out from that situation and now he’s basically betraying their own group by selling Asirpa and not worrying about Shiraishi getting his own share of gold.
Sugimoto, sweating, complains claiming that now the situation is different and even now he doesn’t care about what Tsurumi plans to do for Hokkaido...
...which in my books isn’t really a good excuse as what Tsurumi is planning for Hokkaido will be clearly harmful for Asirpa and the Ainu and, deep down, Sugimoto knows and should care about it.
It’s interesting how Sugimoto will sweat for most of his conversation with Shiraishi, showing us how uncomfortable he is with it.
Anyway Sugimoto then tries to persuade Shiraishi of the purity of his own intentions.
With an earnest face he claims Tsurumi won’t use Asirpa, he is not like Hijikata who wants to drag Asirpa and the Ainu in a war so this would be the best option for Asirpa, Shiraishi should agree to him, Sugimoto after all knows better than everyone and he means well so why Shiraishi isn’t agreeing?
Well, I too think Sugimoto means well, but he clearly doesn’t know better than everyone, actually he doesn’t know at all since he isn’t even considering the consequences Tsurumi’s plan for Hokkaido will have on Asirpa and, I think, deep down Sugimoto is aware of this as well, of how his plan might not be so perfect, that’s why he couldn’t sleep. Sugimoto was afraid he was screwing up, he just wasn’t ready to admit it.
Anyway his ‘Sugisplaining’ (word courtesy of Merdopseudo) doesn’t work with Shiraishi, Shiraishi is not a young girl with a crush on him that can be easily persuaded, Shiraishi is a man older than Sugimoto and who also has grown a lot from when they had parted at Abashiri.
Shiraishi tosses in Sugimoto’s face that although he insists in throwing around Asirpa’s name he was aiming at getting some gold for the widow he loves.
Sugimoto admits he and Tsurumi has an agreement so Tsurumi will pay him ONLY the money he needs to pay her medical expenses.
That’s why Sugimoto asked for 200 yens, which is the price for the travel for ONE person plus the medical expenses, instead than an amount big enough to cover the travel for two people (himself and Umeko). He likely believed he would feel a little better at selling Asirpa off, if it was solely for Umeko, that this wouldn’t mean he’s selling Asirpa off for some money, because it wouldn’t be Sugimoto who would get the money, just Umeko.
Yeah, it wouldn’t be him, but he still would benefit from it as that money would help him heal the woman he loves, giving him an excuse to go back home and, potentially, helping him to go back into Umeko’s grace.
Shiraishi points out Sugimoto is still selling himself although for a cheap amount and then asks which will be the share he’ll receive instead.
Shiraishi was, after all, part of their group in exchange for some of the gold but Sugimoto didn’t even consider Shiraishi in all this mess as he never asked money for Shiraishi nor what would Tsurumi do with him.
On a sidenote I love how many expressions Shiraishi has in this chapter. Noda really went out of his way to give Shiraishi a different expression in each panel. This piece is great.
Shiraishi then slaps Sugimoto, as hard as he can I’ll say, complaining about how he didn’t get into this for a small amount of money.
Honestly I doubt Tsurumi plans to give something to Shiraishi and I think Shiraishi knows this as well. However I think the whole thing isn’t Shiraishi really complaining about money but Shiraishi wanting to get a rise out of Sugimoto who, predictably, slaps him back claiming money is filthy and Shiraishi can only think at that… as if Sugimoto hadn’t asked for money as well.
Yeah, Sugimoto has a ‘noble’ purpose for asking for money but the point is the same, he wants money and therefore he shouldn’t judge others for wanting it calling them ‘greedy’. After all, instead than trying with all his strength to collect that money with legal means, Sugimoto had tossed himself in a gold hunt in which he planned to kill people to get money (originally a lot more than just 200 yen) so, although he plans to use for different things because different things would give him happiness, he’s still into this for the money, not for the adventure or the justice or whatever.
Sugimoto after all made clear in chap 113 he believes having a lot of gold can bring happiness.
Anyway, after throwing up, Shiraishi verbally attacks him again, asking him if he is really trying to sell him he is guiding Asirpa toward the right path when he doesn’t even have the authority to do so as she’s not his lover, wife or daughter but her own person.
Shiraishi accuses him of having persuaded himself that he’s doing this because ‘now he has something he wants to protect’ when it’s just that Sugimoto is being pathetic and weak and afraid to take risks.
Sugimoto is trying to chose the easy way out, telling himself it’s the RIGHT way out and painting it as a noble course of actions when talking with others.
I wonder if, deep down, Sugimoto got so angry at Ogata shooting him because he actually got afraid he could die there. Abashiri took a toll on Sugimoto, he sustained a lot of damage and then almost died to Ogata’s shoot.
Sugimoto is someone who hides fear behind confidence and who swore to kill first whoever were to try to kill him.
Maybe his whole behavior through the Karafuto travel is also meant to hide it, that he hadn’t psychologically recovered yet by Abashiri, that the situation had turned too big for him to handle and that he wants out. He wants to keep Asirpa out of troubles, he wants to hand the money to Umeko, and, most importantly, he wants out from danger.
So yes, in wanting to keep Asirpa pure and safe, it’s very likely Sugimoto is projecting A HUGE LOT of what he wishes for himself, it’s him who has enough and wants to go back to hunt and say ‘hinna, hinna’ with Asirpa or eat dried persimmons with Umeko without having to worry about losing people.
In a way it’s pretty sad because his wish is really, really human.
In fact we see that as Shiraishi talks Sugimoto sweats a lot, a sign Shiraishi has hit right on the mark again.
Shiraishi points out how the travel through Karafuto caused Asirpa to grow and change so that she’s not the little child Sugimoto knew before...
and then voices my feelings on their whole relation from the point they met again till now.
They had met again but they are still far.
It’s something I’ve yammered about often in my meta, how although Sugimoto and Asirpa were back together their interactions weren’t as good as before, they felt forced and they didn’t seem to understand and support each other as before. It was as if they were making an effort but they were just two strangers playing friends, and didn’t seem anymore the close partners they were before.
It was painful to watch them.
Shiraishi then goes and defends Kiro’s actions.
It’s worth to remember again Kiroranke was Shiraishi’s friend.
Shiraishi, in a way, understands Sugimoto way better than Sugimoto thinks as Shiraishi lost Kiro due to Kiro being a partisan so he can very well fear Asirpa would end up meeting the same path.
However, as he claims Kiroranke didn’t lie to her in regard to the minorities we have one of the few instances in which Shiraishi calls Kiroranke just ‘Kiroranke’ and not ‘Kiro-chan’. That’s because he’s taking him seriously, speaking of him with respect.
And although he calls him ‘Wazawaza kuso majime’ (わざわざクソ真面目 “Annoyingly fucking serious guy”),

something he said also when he died (‘Majime sugiru otoko tattanda yo Kiro-chan wa sa…!!’ “Kiro-chan was just a man who was too serious…!!”)
I think now Shiraishi is finally understanding Kiro and his ‘seriousness’.
[Just to clear things up ‘Majime’ (真面目) means ‘seriousness’ but also ‘earnestness’, ‘diligence’, ‘honesty’, ‘soberty’, ‘gravity’, ‘steadiness’ and ultimately ‘one's true character’ so it’s has a positive connotation.]
Kiro might have been ‘too serious’ where Shiraishi used to tend to think to his own self interest, but he was also the guy who stood and went to save that Orok in need, when Tsurumi’s men just told him to come back on his own when Shiraishi was targeted by a sniper and wounded.
Kiro was a man who helped others at the price of his own life, even when he hardly knew them and didn’t need to, this was his greatness.
This was, deep down, why Shiraishi loved him, loved that man that, at their first meeting, without even knowing who Shiraishi was, jumped in the river to save him while Sugimoto and Asirpa remained there watching.
Shiraishi, who previously cared only for himself, preferred to chose the easy path and only recently had learnt to care for his close friends, had managed to understand BEFORE SUGIMOTO that what Kiro wanted to pass to Asirpa about the Ainu was important for Asirpa, that what he told her was the truth… and that if Asirpa decides to fight for the Ainu, the best they can do for her is to support her, not tell her to turn her back to her own people and wash her hands clean of their problems.
Sugimoto wants to call himself Asirpa’s partner but Shiraishi points out how a partner should support her decision, that this decision is for Asirpa to take, not Sugimoto…
…and Shiraishi also thinks that supporting her will help Sugimoto as well… because Shiraishi actually cares for Sugimoto too and understands he’s feeling bad and would want to help him as well.
That’s why he’s scolding him. Not for the money and not just for Asirpa but because he’s friend with all of them, Kiroranke, Asirpa, Sugimoto, and wants the best for them.
After this wonderful talk who basically summed up all I wanted to say and do to Sugimoto… well, Shiraishi throw up and then falls on the ground, spent.
I’ve always wanted Shiraishi, who’s older than Sugimoto and who travelled with Asirpa and Kiro, to be the one to slap some sense into Sugimoto… but I also knew Shiraishi is not really that assertive or prone to go outright against Sugimoto and also was mourning about Kiro so I was afraid he might not feel up to deal with Sugimoto.
I’m beyond delighted Shiraishi managed to do it and in such a wonderful way. Sure, maybe it would have been better if he hadn’t been drunk… but I think the whole thing probably helped him to pull out what he had inside (and Noda might think it would make the scene lighter and funnier…)
Sugimoto needed this wake up call, needed someone to point out the flaws in his reasoning, their selfishness and wrongness, and not just toward Asirpa but toward Shiraishi, toward Kiro and TOWARD HIMSELF.
Sugimoto’s choice was wrong on all the line but Sugimoto is not really good at acknowledging his mistakes so he needed a friend to do it for him and Shiraishi was perfect in this.
Really, just for this Shiraishi, as far as I’m involved, deserves the whole amount of gold and with no curses attached. Long life Shiraishi, he was great.
Sugimoto is thoughtful and still sweating as Shiraishi remains on the ground. Shiraishi’s talk should have made an impression but apparently that sadly wasn’t enough…
At least not yet, so here Sugimoto is, to welcome Tsurumi with Asirpa, Tanigaki, Shiraishi, Koito and Tsukishima as Tsurumi comes, when, after Shiraishi’s talk, I was hoping Sugimoto would just go straight to Asirpa, face her and ask her what she really wants and then support her in it.
Sugimoto isn’t an unsure person like Tanigaki could be, Sugimoto’s problem is the opposite, Sugimoto is so confident in himself being right he has hard time to back out of his own decisions when they are CLEARLY wrong.
Koito is ahead of everyone, Tsukishima behind him.
There’s a sweat drop on Koito’s face and even if he’s smiling it seems forced and he seems stressed. To have Tsukishima right behind him should feel like having Tsukishima’s rifle barrel pointed at his back, so this is not a pleasant situation for him.
Tanigaki, the guy who went around claiming HE would bring Asirpa back to Huci, that this was HIS duty, catches his chance to tell Asirpa SHE should ask Tsurumi to let her visit her grandmother as Tsurumi SURELY wouldn’t refuse to let her do this.
Yeah, sure, and in the meantime he would take notes of where Asirpa’s grandmother is and see if he can use her as blackmail material as he did with Ariko or it would be better to use Osoma or Makanakkuru. You know, just to play safe.
But the real thing that hurts me, is not Tanigaki’s naïve view of Tsurumi.
What hurts me is that Tanigaki too ultimately sees Asirpa as a ‘prisoner’, because if she needs Tsurumi’s permission to go back to her grandmother, this hints she’s no free to go there without Tsurumi’s approbation. What’s even worse though is that Tanigaki has claimed more than once bringing Asirpa back was HIS duty. Instead than telling her SHE should ask for it, Tanigaki should expose himself and volunteer to do it for her. Because if Tsurumi is SO UNDERSTANDING really, why Tanigaki can’t do it but have to tell to a young girl to ask for permission to see her grandmother from a man she doesn’t know and that’s holding her captive?
What is he afraid of?
Also really, Tanigaki should worry about his own family and of how he has skipped going back to them to bring back Kenkichi’s last words and ease their grief on Fumi’s death over and over, not of how Asirpa should go back to her grandmother. Talk about pot calling the kettle.
On another side the fact that Tanigaki seems ready to finish his sidequest by speaking up to encourage Asirpa to go back to Huci, seems to hint that he believes murdering Kiro was his purpose in life and doesn’t need another. That, or he has given up on being a Matagi and is planning to go back on being a soldier because opposing to the ‘oh so understanding’ Tsurumi isn’t his thing.
*sighs* I’m afraid for Tanigaki, really, as somehow I don’t think this will develop well for him, even if he’s finally ready to let go of his sidequest I’m not sure he’s ready to embrace his true quest, going back home.
Besides, Tanigaki should really remove his rose-tinted glasses in regard to Tsurumi.
Tsurumi is a clever manipulator who could care less about the Ainu and kills whoever goes in his way, not a kind daddy who forgives his misconducts. Tsurumi used him and Inkarmat to discover Sugimoto’s moves and then he went to Abashiri and exterminated whoever was there, criminals and guards alike.
Luckily Asirpa doesn’t swallow Tanigaki’s words, she had seen how Tsurumi tortured Sugimoto when Sugimoto was captured and she might have caught glimpses of what the man did in Abashiri, but gives Tsurumi the benefit of doubt, by claiming she’ll understand which sort of person he is by looking at him.
Well… Asirpa must be really confident in her ability to judge people correctly with just a glance because first impressions might be wrong and Tsurumi is a master in manipulating others but… we’ll discuss about this later.
The info box tells us Tsurumi has managed to bring with himself only 16 land troops but we see around him only 10 men, among which Kikuta and Usami. There’s no sight of Nikaido. The group is no friendly looking, their faces either shadowed or hidden by their hats and Tsurumi’s whole figure is mostly heavily shadowed as he moves from behind his men to in front of them, as Noda likely wanted to give the impression Tsurumi would come out from darkness.
Tsurumi starts by praising the Karafuto advance party for their good work, claiming he had no doubts they would manage to do it.
Koito smiles but there are many stress lines under his eyes and he doesn’t seem his usual overjoyed self. I wonder if his smile is more a smile of relief, as in ‘he didn’t notice how I was faking being happy’ or it’s just that a part of him is still pretty of ‘Tsurumisexuality’. Koito has been fawning over Tsurumi for so long, crushing on his so hard I think although he knows what Tsurumi did, a part of him could still refuse to acknowledge all this and just want to be praised by Tsurumi.
Tsukishima has his usual expression.
Interesting enough Tanigaki’s face is shadowed, even if there should be no need for it. Does Tsurumi’s words mean something more for him? Was it Tsurumi who prompted him to murder Kiro? Is he ashamed of how he handled the mission? We’ll see.
Sugimoto’s face is shadowed too and his eyes are hidden by his hat. Sugimoto is probably still affected by Shiraishi’s words, he knows what he’s doing is wrong but he has no backup plan.
Tsurumi removes his hat, and we can see the heavy shadows on his face are disappearing as he asks if the ‘Ojōsan’ (お嬢さん “Miss”/“Young Lady”) in front of him is Asirpa. He’s polite in his question, friendly.
The following page can be cut in two parts.
In the two panels above the visual focus on Asirpa, we can only see a bit of Tsurumi’s back, while we get a close up of Asirpa’s serious face. The bottom part instead are all flashbacks of Wilk, specifically focusing on his eyes, the last showing how Tsurumi checked Nopperabo’s corpse’s eyes to make sure they were of Wilk’s same colour so as to insure Nopperabo was Wilk.
We see Tsurumi in the next page, commenting Asirpa has Wilk’s same eyes.
Tsurumi’s eyes instead are big, dark and the sclera is shadowed. A corner of his mouth is up but the other isn’t as he comments Asirpa clearly has HIS (Wilk’s) eyes. Does he think at his own child as he watches Wilk’s child? Does he wonder if Olga would have grown up to look like Asirpa if she were to have the chance to grow up, if he had never met Wilk and his companions?
Hard to say but from the way Asirpa looks at him she doesn’t seem positively impressed… and I wonder if, from Tsurumi’s sentence, she has understood Tsurumi knew her father PRIOR to the man becoming Nopperabo, if she sensed in him her father’s enemy.
Shiraishi throws up, distracting Tsurumi, and Sugimoto notices Asirpa grabbing 5 arrows, 5 as the shoots of Sugimoto’s rifle.
How in such a short time Asirpa managed to move the quiver that was over her shoulder under her arm is something I’ll let someone else speculate. Actually my impression is she had worn it upside down so that she could take the arrows quietly from the bottom instead than have to reach for the opening from above her right shoulder.
Asirpa has a very cold and impassible face as she does so, while Sugimoto is clearly shocked to the core.
With a smile Asirpa tells him she can decide her own future by herself…
...because Asirpa is just this sort of awesome character who won’t let anyone talk her into something in which she doesn’t believe. Sure, at times she might be confuse or hesitate or something but then she’ll always manage to find her own way.
Sugimoto’s ‘Sugisplaining’ techniques are ultimately wasted on her. Asirpa, despite her young age, is the sort of person who takes charge of her own life and I love her for this.
Tsurumi is surprised, Tsukishima is shocked but Sugimoto finally connects the dots and nods. Now he’s finally back on being her partner and understanding her and, as she tosses her arrows high on the sky, and then they start to fall down, toward Tsurumi and his men, pulled down by the force of gravity, Sugimoto yells those are poisoned arrows, causing panic in Tsurumi’s men as we can see them all starting to sweat. Well, them all except Tsurumi.
Not that it changes anything as Usami and another soldier push Tsurumi on the ground, protecting him with their bodies and basically stopping him from doing or seeing anything.
Tsukishima hurries everyone to dodge as Tanigaki just stay there, looking up. 4 arrows hit the ground, one narrowly missing Koito who, interesting enough, had done no attempt to protect Tsurumi, very differently from how he reacted when O-gin had attacked him.
Kikuta asks if everyone is all right while Tsurumi, always the clever one, manages to get up and yells Sugimoto and Asirpa have run away, as this was clearly the first thing Tsurumi expected and checked (who cares about his men).
Now… I don’t know how far Sugimoto and Asirpa think they can run. Even if Koito, who’s Tsurumi’s fastest runner, were to somehow make an excuse not to chase them pretending he has no idea in which direction they had escaped, Sugimoto and Asirpa don’t have that much of an advantage and Tsurumi’s men have rifles and they might even know how to use them so they could at least catch sight of them and shoot Sugimoto down.
There’s also to wonder about the 6 men that weren’t with Tsurumi but that Tsurumi carried with himself. Did Tsurumi predict the possibility of such a situation and put them on standby in a better location? We’ll see.
Anyway Sugimoto and Asirpa run away, Sugimoto commenting he noticed those arrows weren’t poisoned and, due to this, he figured Asirpa’s intention to escape (and not to murder).
Asirpa points out how, IF they are partner, she doesn’t want to hear anymore from him she can’t do something but that he should support her by telling her something like ‘let’s do it together’.
Really, Sugimoto, when an adult man needs to take lessons from a child on how to be a good partner, I worry.
But well, I love Asirpa’s expression now, she’s confident and back to her holder self. This is the Asirpa we all love.
Sugimoto, conveniently forgetting in this way he’s betraying Tsurumi, agrees, claiming they don’t need anyone’s help to find the gold.
His grin too is back on being the old Sugimoto’s grin. I like to hope this is the sign they’re back on being close again, as they were before the Karafuto arc started. Maybe I’m wrong but I want to hope.
And yeah, this could be a great ending, with Sugimoto and Asirpa finally, FINALLY back to how they were before, it if wasn’t for the ‘note of humour’ Noda decided to add by showing Shiraishi was hit in the head by one of Asirpa’s arrows and remained behind.
Shiraishi doesn’t know the arrows aren’t poisoned and wonders if he’ll die.
What upsets me though is that Shiraishi was great in this chapter, he was for them both the best friend one might wish and they… left him in Tsurumi’s hands. Sure, he’s the escape king but Sugimoto could have grabbed his arm and dragged him away with them, just to play safe.
Really, I didn’t need another joke on how Shiraishi goes always hit/bitten in the head, I would have wanted for them to escape together and be back on being the awesome trio they were.
I guess Noda wanted to focus on the Sugimoto/Asirpa duo… but I still think Shiraishi deserved to be there, escaping with them.
Also Noda explained Ainu arrows are very light and completely lack in stopping power… but I’m not sure they wouldn’t be harmful should they hit someone’s head after such a fall. Honestly, I fear Shiraishi could get a concussion, never mentioning the point is sharp… so well, I really didn’t want poor Shiraishi to get hit. But well, we can’t always get what we want.
So this is how the chapter ends. In a way not much happened… but the little which did was AWESOME.
What will happen to our trio from now on? Will they manage to go back to Hokkaido or remain some more in Karafuto? Will they meet up with Ogata? Will they go search for Sofia? Will they drop by again to where Wilk’s village was?
Maybe it’s a little too early to guess it but I feel as if the Karafuto arc is, in a way, finished. Regardless of the group remaining in Karafuto or not, the travel back and forth has ended and their goal now is different. We’ll see where it’ll carry them.
What the new chapter will be about?
The 7th? Koito? Tanigaki? Hijikata? Ogata? Sofia? Vasily who has disappeared by some chapters but, I bet, is still keeping an eye over the group? Or our trio as I expect Shiraishi to escape and join them asap? We’ll see but really, I can’t wait!

Counter-Racist Action Collective NORTH
2 https://drive.google.com/file/d/1CVhtNcDaQN00b9nUhoO2zIk1ZgOwbb9v
