These lines and the ozdust ballroom scene as a whole are sooo powerful and important because they say yes you should be your authentic self and be unapologetically who you are no matter if you stand out as different, but also yes social rejection and judgement and ridicule and feeling like you don't belong hurts. Those two truths can and do exist simultaneously. There's this idea that if you're content and confident in who you are, then people's words and how they view you shouldn't affect you, but it's just not true. You can fully embrace your true self, embrace what makes you different, have a strong sense of identity, feel secure in who you are and perfectly content with the way you look, but judgemental glances, exclusion, not belonging, being "othered", the superficial and misguided opinions of others and mistreatment based on some aspect of who you are can and often does still cut like a knife. It's a pain we often ignore, push aside, pretend it doesn't impact us and perhaps in some ways that's a good thing, a form of protection, but it's a pain we still carry and it's a pain this scene unearths (within me at least, based on the three times I've sobbed in the movie theatre).

Elphaba never compromises who she is and the story never suggests she should. She stands boldly in front of a crowd as her authentic self. She lives with her head held high in the face of scorn and judgement and has done so since she was a child. And within her heart she carries the pain, pain from years and years of mistreatment and ostracism. But in this scene, she allows herself to be vulnerable. She feels the pain. She cries. And it feels like an invitation, like permission, to be vulnerable with this feeling, like an acknowledgement that this pain exists within so many. Then, when Glinda sees Elphaba's pain, when she sees her, when she joins her and dances with her, when she wipes her tears and holds her, she is also seeing, joining, dancing with, wiping the tears of and holding the audience too. The onus is not on Elphaba to change or to "put up with" the ill-treatment she is subjected to; rather it is placed on those treating her poorly to see the heartache they have contributed to, to realise that their words and actions have the capacity to hurt, despite those wounds often being hidden from their view.

It's powerful, heartbreaking, healing and beautiful 💚

Well my s/i, Jane Doe, meets Utonium at the bookstore she works at! I'm sure he was coming in for some kind of scientific text, something the girls wouldn't have been interested in so he came alone and well. As he was browsing he was knocked out by a huge book that falls on his head 😂 and when he comes to my s/i is looking over him apologizing profusely and making sure he's ok, and we've seen that he can fall in love before even speaking a WORD to someone so...yeah he's instantly smitten! 💖💖💖

Once they make sure he's ok (and not concussed lmao) the two of them get to talking and an attraction sort of builds up on my s/is side too! I think Utonium would look for any reason at all to come back to that bookstore, getting things he doesn't need or asking about books he knows they DON'T have. Anything to keep talking to her, and ofc she starts catching feelings for him too while they do this 🥺

I think the final nail for HER is when he actually does bring the girls along with him into the store! Obviously the one most excited about it would be Blossom, she'd be interested in all the language and history books, Bubbles would be interested in art books and it would be comic books for Buttercup!

But I think seeing him interact with the girls, the way they're buzzing excitedly around him showing him each of their finds and he patiently carries each and every one of them with kindness and support 😭😭💖💖 seeing him with the girls like that would be the thing that makes her fall ALL the way in love with him!!!

And as for the girls, ofc it takes some time for them to get used to Jane. Especially before they get over the whole 'alien' thing, their protectiveness over Utonium only stems from their love for him! But once they realize that Jane truly loves him too, they decide to let them both be happy and they grow to love her too! She bonds with each of them in different ways and definitely acts like...a really cool babysitter or big sister before things get really serious and she has to adjust to acting like a MOM. But the bottom line for everything she does is also love for them! And they all learn and grow together as a family 🫶🫶🫶🫶
