do you know where your children are? . . . the 2010’s aren’t the point in time of the relevancy of this advertisement ( 1960s ), and no one then really listens to the radio anyway, but it’s just as well; katrina hopley wouldn’t have known the answer even if she had held her head up long enough to hear it. and james i? the baby daddy of her first and her second kid? yeah, split before the little one was even fuckin’ old enough to be able to hold a memory. james ii, five years older than mikey, makes it his job to know the answer to that question for all of them after their mom drops the ball for the last time and leaves mikey to walk home three miles by herself after school when she’s just eight and he’s just thirteen. it’s because of his devotion to keeping them both afloat that she was cared for at all, and it’s for this reason that james vanishing eighteen months ago all but destroyed her.  even though her mother walked out when she was fifteen and even though that introduced a grief of it’s own kind into her life, she was still well looked after; and really, the absence of them didn’t change much when he was more her parent than either of theirs ever had been. she was loved by the person that mattered the most to her and that was enough. love is leaking all over the house she grew up in ( it suffocates her ), in the form of pictures on the wall that her brother cared to put up of the two of them and in all of the furniture he either bought with his own money or fixed with his own hands. in the way he used to set the table for her, even on days where she didn’t think to call home and let him know she’d be late, leaving him to worry ( and they were frequent. god, were they frequent ) — she regrets those types of things the most in his absence, and she hasn’t moved that last plate he’d left in her spot. never ate the food he saved, either. that had to go about a week after the departure. the seaside’s lonely when it’s a singular pair of boots tracking in sand and especially when she can’t hear james laughing down the hallway at a rerun of golden girls that he’s seen no less than eighty times.  mikey does things now without much direction, without much purpose — and they can blame that all day on the fact that they lost their north star, but the truth is that they were born aimless ( the way we all are ) and then never found something to make their reason. reason to work hard, reason to try at anything. they’re unregulated and unpredictable on their worst days, devastatingly charismatic and sweet on their best, and generally fumbling through life with almost an impressive level of mediocrity on every day in-between.

Tragedy struck Midlothian on September 5th 1889 when Sixty-three miners, some as young as thirteen, died in an underground fire at Mauricewood Pit, at Penicuik, Midlothian.

This was the worst mining disaster in the history of the Lothians and the cause was never discovered, or at least disclosed.

The following is extracted from “The Mauricewood Braves” one of Wilsons ‘Mining Lays, Tales and Folk-lore’ published 1916.

“The Mauricewood Pit, at Penicuik, near Edinburgh, took fire on September 5th, 1889, and sixty eight men and boys lost their lives. The principal product from the pit was ironstone, although coal in small quantities was also produced. The pit had a vertical shaft of 480 feet then a level roadway eastwards of 180 feet and this was followed by a one in eight dip decline of 960 feet (Deaths Incline). Halfway down the decline a steam engine had been erected and another steam engine did duty at the bottom. The steam pipes traversed this route, and it was at the 800 ft slant that the fire broke out among the support timbers. The wood was tinder and inflammable, and it was soon apparent that the conflagration would spread and become disastrous. There were no other outlets to or from the lower level, and unless the men below received a warning note to give them a chance of escape, they must inevitably perish. Three trapper and pony boys – Robert Hook Tolmie (my own surname but no relation) , aged 14; Michael Hamilton, aged 15; and Thomas Foster, aged 17 years, volunteered to go round the mine and warn all the men below of their danger, but the only shiftman there, his mate was away in another district of the pit- pleaded with the boys not to go away and said that he would go himself to warn the other men of the fires danger, but the boys in unison shouted as they ran “No, we’ll go” ….. And they went. The brave boys never came back alive. “They died to save” The bodies of the boys were afterwards recovered (surrounded by over twenty other bodies) near a trapdoor that had got blocked up in the meantime cutting off the avenue of escape. The mine was subsequently flooded to quench the fire that was raging in the workings, and over a year elapsed before the last body was brought to the surface.

The heroism and self-sacrifice of the three lads aroused sympathetic expressions and admiration throughout the mining world, and a monument marks their last resting place in the Penicuik’s KirkHill Cemetery.

Poppy had decided since the fire to take the opportunity to redo her apartment. Thankfully nothing valuable had been damaged, but now it was mostly just fixing the replaceable items. As she wondered through the store she let her hand touch the different textures of pillows and duvet covers. Hearing a voice brought her from her thoughts and she looked up to see a familiar face. "But what?" She asked curiously. Tilting her head to look at him as blonde hair fell over her shoulder. "White or black of course. Although another shade of green or even a cream could work." She remarked with a shrug. Moving to sit down on the couch, she put her feet up on the coffee table. "Come sit. It's too comfy to not get."

The last place in Lunar Cove Jamie called home was no longer a place he was welcome. Not that he expected to be after he skipped town, but he had his reasons. A laundry list of things he was avoiding now, as to remain out of the pit of despair they put him in. He'd promised his sisters he'd behave, uphold their good family name in the community. How these places stayed in business James didn't know. He thought all mattress stores were a money laundry front because who bought a mattress all that often? It'd certainly been awhile since he'd had the need, and he didn't know where to start. Of course, the sales associate directed him to the most expensive bed on the floor, but there was something about a purple mattress he didn't like. He was eyeing an Alaskan King when he caught someone appear in his peripheral vision, and he asked. "Is there such a thing as too much bed?"

From one couch cushion to another, James plopped in and out of seats. A time or two, he teleported between sofas, doing his best to asses what felt the most right. Comfort was important, as was the aesthetic. He had an artistic side that quietly enjoyed interior design, though he lacked the skills of an expert decorator. "I love it, but..." What would his mother say about a green couch? Growing up, their family home was shades of beige. Maybe it was why he now craved color. "..if the couch is green what color should the rug be?"

Eyes crinkled with the formation of crows feet narrowed in scrutiny at the back of a Terra Kaffe box. The thing had so many features James wasn't sure if he should tip it after every use. It was overwhelming to a man who generally lacked experience in the kitchen beyond eating what was made for him, but it felt like a responsible thing to do; learning to cook. Grownups fed themselves. "Why do I feel like this will sit in its box in a cabinet unused until I have a garage sale someday...." James put the fancy coffe machine back then put a drip pot in his cart. "Maybe I should get an air fryer.."

She couldn’t help but wonder if this town was truly safe at all or if it had just been advertised as such. “I want about fifty drinks, but that’s too much for even little old me.” She teased. “Sure I’ll take one on your tab. You don’t have to offer me twice.” Smiling sweetly over to him before she extended her hand. “I don’t think we’ve formally met. I’m Elena.” 

A crowded bar was hardly the right place for him, but if he was going to drink wasn't it better with company? Drinking alone in his bathtub at least felt more pathetic to him than in the company of strangers. He wondered if the fallout from the week's events had caused an uptick in patronage. Jamie certainly struggled to get a drink at first, having to repeat himself a few times to the bartender to be heard. The raise in the volume of his voice seeming to start the woman between them.

Before he could apologize, she was. Though for no reason that Jamie could find. "No, it's my bad. I was just getting a drink." It was hard for him not to feel empathy for the plight of others, even as he had plenty on his own plate. "It's been a rough..." He couldn't even say week because, as he'd recently been informed, this shit show had been going on for months. "..time, but..." Was he lying to people now? Usually honest to a fault, Jamie wondered if he should. Instead, he chose to do what seemed more helpful. "..do you want another drink? You can put it on me."

Poppy hadn’t really wanted to have a birthday party given the fact that she would now be aging like everyone else, but here she was smack dab in the middle of a party all about her and Linden. Sure, she’d invited the whole coven and gave them plus ones, but maybe it was so she wouldn’t feel so alone herself. Plus, now she was half drunk and actually starting to enjoy herself instead of feeling awkward about the whole party. 

Hearing her name called out made her turn around, she walked towards Jamie to meet him in the middle. “That was a whole lot of nicknames there.” She commented as she took a drink of whatever alcohol she’d been handed by another coven witch when her drink had been empty. While it wasn’t top shelf liquor it worked and was doing the job. “We really don’t have to do the whole cake thing. Maybe do it with Linden?” She suggested hoping Jamie would take the bait and let her out of it. “I mean the whole party has been enough, I think Linden should have his moment in the sun.”

It was a rough start to the night. More people than Jamie had anticipated showed up. They ran out of food and booze in the first hour and toilet paper by the second. Jamie finally caved and teleported into town. Pizza Joe's, liquor, and a jumbo pack of TP later and he was back to reignite moral. The hunch punch he made on the fly was a hit, recalling a recipe from his college days that tasted like Hawaiin Punch and Sprite with a kick that made most people black out. A mistake or the party's saving grace? Jamie did not yet know.

"Poppy! Pops! Pops! Pop Pop! Popperoni Supreme Pizza! It's only your birthday for fifteen more minutes!!! We have to light the cake!!!"
