Takumi came rushing in, katana ready to swing.

"I'm here!" He yelled, charging at the nearest enemy, "How are you holding up?"

Eito's in the middle of carving through a flimsy invader with his scythe when the familiar voice calls out to him from across the battlefield. In the brief moment of reprieve, he turns to look back at his charging ally. "Hello, Takumi!"

The wind blows through Eito's slicked back hair. His cape, split down the center with each end tapering off into a feathery winglike design, billows out from behind him. He hadn't taken on this particular appearance before. Back when he hid his true motivations from Sirei, it was only present in the form of his class weapon. But now, with his true self revealed for all to see, accompanied by his slightly altered purpose, his armor reflects his accepted identity as a guardian angel.

"I'm doing quite well, actually! I haven't gotten this much exercise in a long while, hah, but I welcome the challenge! I assume Hiruko managed to find you amidst the chaos. I have to admit, I'm feeling pretty lucky today!" Eito taps on the noise-cancelling headphones still placed over his ears.

"Ahh, yeah, but even the time wasters can come around to help you out later on," he told his cousin. "Word of mouth is a great way to get your name around," he started, although his father's real estate agency was the biggest in the county, and already many people knew to go to them before any other. "If you're real nice to everyone - even the time wasters - they might refer you to some serious buyers, or come back when they're actually ready. There's a fine line between that and just being a push over, though, which is something some of us can't get the hang of," he chuckled softly. "A lot of people are buying around here right now, actually, it's going pretty well," he told her with a nod of his head. "I think you'll start seeing a lot of new faces around, if you haven't already.''

"Well, I don't envy you there. Either way it just sounds like people who are wasting your time." She said - Vivian's job was easy in a sense where most people who came into the store were adamant on renting a movie. It helped that she had a strong sense of salesmanship when it came to film, too. "How are your other listings going?"

if you feel like you're always getting talked over, or if you feel like you're always accidentally interrupting people, you should consider looking into some of the linguistics research about conversation style and turn-taking. lingthusiasm podcast has a great episode called "how to rebalance a lopsided conversation" that goes over some of this research in a really accessible way; Deborah Tannen's book You just don't understand is an early book¹ that's aimed at general audiences on the same topic.

the thing is, when there's conflict in how a conversation flows, often what's going on is a mismatch in norms or expectations -- not that one person is necessarily acting "wrong" and the other person is "right." the mismatches in norms/expectations can and do align with existing power structures in society, but being more aware of them can really help you as an individual trying to navigate them.

you can train your brain for more linguistic awareness! start listening for pauses, intakes of breath, or back-channeling that's meant to support, not interrupt. try it out!

¹ I am linking to the wikipedia page for the book rather than a link to buy the book because it's kind of outdated and the criticism section on the wiki page is pretty reasonable. If you do read this book, be prepared for uhhhh period-typical gender essentialism that, to my knowledge, Tannen has not particularly updated her views on in the intervening time. But it is an influential and important book, just read it skeptically imo

@sdu-axe-queen Hiruko entered the courtyard and strolled calmly up to Eito's cage. "I brought you a book; I thought we could spend some time together."

She placed the book on the floor of his cage before going and sitting on the nearby bench. "It's Paradise Lost. I'm sure you've already read it, but honestly, finding something you haven't read is impossible."

She crossed her legs and pulled out her own book as if to read, but continued speaking. "I'm sure you've heard, I have your key now."

Eito turns to look at the unexpected visitor with a grin. He still looks a bit frazzled, but he holds his confident posture well. "Well, well, well, if it isn't the smoking sanguisuge herself. Been a while since I've seen your grisly visage so closely."

He slides the book over to himself, expression lightening as he reads the title along with Hiruko's words. "You're absolutely right. A classic I've read many times over. I certainly wouldn't mind reading it again. It's a wonderful reminder of why I'm here."

Eito tilts his head as he skims through the pages. If Hiruko won't look at him, then she doesn't deserve his full attention either. "Really now? Did Takumi surrender it that easily to you? Well, I shouldn't be surprised. After his latest visits, he's been looking even more pathetic than usual. Such a pushover."

Seline grit her teeth. She opened the door to Sigmund's cell, "... Dr. Kyle wants to speak to you. You too, Stevie," she turned to the young man who was sitting just out of sight. [ask-a-guard-dog]

Sigmund reluctantly got up and moved to follow. Albeit he was nervous to see the man again after everything…he was intrigued on what he wanted to say to him.
