I always make an effort to look at paranatural through the ~2013 era lens it was conceptualized from, back when it was at it’s most subversive, in tandem alongside its contemporary lens. Because thats what Paranatural was, for those who aren’t aware — paranatural played off of & against the common shonen & cartoon tropes and character expectations that were prevalent in that age: the wise and just mentor, the prejudiced bully, the action girl implemented to pushback against sexism + the subversion of the action girl, the excited rare skilled selfless battleprone protagonist, etc.

most new fans will likely see the comic and take it at face value — why shouldn’t they? — when in reality there’s so much more of a dialogue happening underneath the hood. There is so much underlying, forgotten context that makes paranatural, paranatural

#paranatural #i would give like anything to talk to a pnat fan who was around 18 in 2013 and knew all of this from the get-go #i’ve taught myself it through independent research and studying media trends of that period (plus being a fan circ 2015 but i was on the #younger side.) now everyone in the fandom seems to be younger than me. so if i dont know it then they DEFINITELY dont know it #by which i mean ‘if im not old enough to remember then they definitely arent’#but yeah thats why pnat - especially early pnat - is chock full of so many anime gags and references. like goku dying so much.#whereas now those references have become more…. integrated into the text itself rather than a callback or satirization #thise fans would be in their 30s-ish now and Im not sure how id find them in today’s internet climate. but i so badly want to understand #paranatural as it was conceived as instead of only what it has become #i want a comprehensive understanding #analysis #this is also kind of why i dont think that interpreting pnat through a 2020-2025 cultural lens is going to……. recognize the comic as well #like yeah the audience does have more information about the plot and characters and world and such. but the contexts they were created #within are more or less gone. or theyve shifted to something completely different. the shows that zack created pnat around aren’t popular #in the same way that they were back then; so instead of refracting against those stories in a dialogue people - usually new fans - take the #comic as it is

#I wasn't thinking of it that way because it's like. For lack of a more appropriate word diagetic?#Like it's not invoked symbolically in the narrative or just with association it like. Involves actual dogs and the in-universe culture's #view on dogs. Rather than dog imagery to represent like Loyalty or Devotion or etc #The biggest underlying theme is kind of the human/animal relationship and animals as means of externalizing human states #cultural desires and fears etc etc etc #And in-universe dogs have a very complicated place in this cultural context where they tread the thinnest of lines between #being noble loyal valuable animals and unclean lowly despised scavengers. Both are the same animal and it all depends on the #role they play. And then this divide is narrowing in the context of a famine where the dog becomes competition #for food/consumer of the dead/possible desperation food source itself and one that contaminates the consumer in the process #Street dogs as kind of the ultimate representation of cultural anxieties of enemies infiltrating from within and without #despised elements of the culture that are omnipresent nonetheless etc etc etc etc #And then a cast of main characters where ALL of them in very different capacities are balancing a delicate line of trying their #best to play roles to remain in the 'valued' category and not fall into the 'despised'. Some doing better than others or having #more privileged places in this dynamic than others but all under tremendous strain from it #In a condensed high pressure panopticon setting of a pilgrimage/war party surrounded by like some of the highest #members of the social elite/literal royalty/etc #And anyway bottom line EXTREMELY central 'dog motif' going on here literally every main character interacts with a #'dog motif' in some capacity . it just hit me that the movie is coming out next month imgonna throw upppppppp

#to be clear this isnt an excited post this is a scared post .#i feel kinda guilty about it with how excited i was about the first 2 movies #but i just cant be anymore paramount and the scu have disappointed me so much within the past year in so many ways ......#shadow is one of my favorite characters his lore makes me go crazy and is one of the things that pulled me into loving sonic so much #but i literally felt nothing while watching that trailer aside from confusion at some of the writing choices being made #like i wasnt expecting an exact recreation of sa2 but why is sonic working with gun . wtf is gerald doing here . why are there no girls .#the only positives to me were things that were cool visually . which doesnt outweigh all the things that have annoyed/disappointed me #like who cares about another cool sonic and shadow fight scene we already have plenty of those .#Anyway. saw some of those new promotional images.#i swear to god if they actually start calling shadow+eggman+gerald team dark #like they suggested they might in that survey from a while back #im gonna become the joker for real #(insert the NO that is NOT solid snake image but it says team dark instead)#also maybe im taking the hedgehog games way too seriously here #but having gerald still be alive and present in some form feels like such a bad idea from a story perspective ... like .#for one shadow lost Everything in the gun raid having gerald still be here feels like its undermining that in a way #but also gerald's whole thing in sa2 is being long dead but still impacting the story despite that . why is he ALIVEEEE #and why is he here over rouge ???? do they just hate women or something #(before someone goes ''it would take too much time/money to animate another cgi character''#maybe the movies should have just been fully animated if that sort of thing was a concern . just saying)

I have bad news about what every city and town had to be built over. It's all natural habitat. There wasn't somewhere magically with no pokemon where they built Castellia or Jubilife or Lumiose. They had to kick wild pokemon out for that, too.

Also, there are still wild pokemon here? I have mentioned them repeatedly. We haven't kicked any except the bad ones out. I just saw a sawsbuck on my way to school. There are pidove outside. The dratini in the river.

Thinking of adding Otters to the list of creatures I might've been in another lifetime. *Alot* of the characteristics strangely overlap lol

#Madi.txt #seriously like I know people don’t talk like they’re in therapy or like they’re on a stage but maybe it’s fun to watch people perform #maybe characters performing is more interesting to me than a realistic depiction of day to day #obviously it depends on the media but #pmmm is one of my fav things ever because of its descent (ascent?) from day to day into a grand performance art #like the beginning is realistic in its portrayals of how young girls talk to each other (as much as anime can be tbh.I have my issues W it)#but once you near the end and ESPECIALLY once u hit the movies the way characters speak to each other and act becomes like an old play #with all this flowery prose and metaphor #and it’s such a great transition that fits within the story itself so you barely even notice the transition #(unless you watch it ever like 5 months like I do)#it’s SUCH a treat #anyway I should go see a play irl again
