little update on me, i guess
i'm feeling a little more like myself, i guess. slowly but surely.
i've appreciated being able to just take it slow and steady one day at a time because that's all i can really do right now.
this week was kinda rough, though
for one thing, one of my managers accused me of not doing something i know for a fact i did do and that it's another person who's guilty of what she's talking about but for whatever reason she just...assumed it was me??
i did stand my ground on that one, though, i was like, "can you give me an example of where that's happened because i actually found a bug in the system last week so i want to make sure it's not that again because i'm pretty sure i did what you're saying i didn't" and she was just like, "i don't have it right now, i'll send you some in the future if i come across them!!!" like yeah, okay i'll hold my breath on that one
and listen, i know i've made some mistakes here and there on the charts i've been doing, i'll own that. fair enough. but this other thing she's talking about is separate and i know i go above and beyond sometimes while the other person doing the same thing i am is just flying through the fucking things and it's because as i've noticed myself, she's not doing the thing i got a ~helpful reminder~ email about
in any case, i wasn't wrong in thinking that shit was coming out of left field because on the same day she also spoke so awfully to one of the schedulers that she straight up quit, so!!! there's that.
then on thursday i had my yearly neurology appointment which was fine, he pretty much just asks if my medicine is still working and if we need to adjust the dose, does a quick little check up and then sends me home with my renewed prescription and an appointment for next year.
the problem was it's the first time i've really had to extensively interact with someone who doesn't know what's been going on with me and so i was just sort of in a daze the whole time because part of me was like...should i mention it?? is it relevant to my health??
because i noticed my blood pressure was a little higher than usual which to be fair could be due to multiple things but like...i dunno, maybe also grief and the lack of sleep i've been getting? maybe!
ultimately though i decided not to mention it and when he asked how i was doing i just gave him The Script "i'm good, how about you?" and things just moved on from there
we did talk a little about tears for fears, though since i was wearing a tears for fears shirt. he likes them AND he's seen the cure recently so...very cool neurologist. he also prescribed me to listen to talk talk so i'll get on that at some point
anyway, after the visit i was like, "well, that was a whole ordeal, let me go pick up some lunch at the new chipotle that just opened up closer to my house!"
and i knew that i'd have to pass the funeral home to get to it and was prepared for that although it still kinda stings (even though it's the same damn funeral home we used for ashley so like you'd think i'd be used to it by now but)
what i was not prepared for, though, as i was pulling out of the parking lot was to see the hospice place we used right behind the chipotle so...that's neat!!
also later on that day my mom told me about someone else we know whose father also just passed away and unfortunately he went the same way my sister did, so...thrusday was just trigger after trigger after trigger!!
i'll also just mention this and try not to focus on it too much because i think she might actually be working on it now, but my mom's drinking lately has been...not great
i get that if there's ever a time to do it that it would be now and i've been pretty patient and cool about it up until recently and have started saying something
i actually had a meltdown about it this week because it's just...a lot.
as much as i understand it's just so many things wrapped together
i just lost one parent, i'm not really prepared to watch another one go, even if it's slowly
family of four to three to now two and it's like she's speedrunning to make it one
there's also just the...yay, i never get to stop taking care of someone!!! element of it
it's like i told her, part of why she thinks she can drink so much and that everything is fine, it'll be okay, it's fine is because both dad and i went behind her to make it that way
together we worked as a team to make sure she got to bed safely, that her phone was inside and plugged up, that all the doors were closed and locked for the night, that the dog was inside and put to bed, that all the food was put up, etc., etc.
now it's just me.
and i've been doing it now for a little while. i don't say anything, i don't bring my feelings into it at all. i'll just gently usher her to bed when i feel like she's had enough even though i know she'll still get up and have a couple more when she thinks i've gone to sleep and so i'll go downstairs again a few times just to make sure she's really finally safely asleep
but yeah, that's kinda reached its boiling point so i dunno, we'll see
this is the first weekend i've had where i haven't had to worry and i'm not so naive as to think it'll be like this from now on so i've just been trying to enjoy it while it lasts
i've also been spending as much time as possible in the pool until we close it next weekend
it is........very cold in there but if it gets above 80 degrees i'm getting in there and getting in the last of my pool exercises and then immediately getting back out lol
but yeah, i think that's about it for now
i'm still doing my therapy every other week and am still journaling away.
i've had a couple of dreams where i think my dad has visited me. there's always just a different vibe when it's someone who's passed, it's hard to explain, but my therapist said it's real so we'll go with that
he never really says much, he just smiles and is just there, looking like himself.
that's been comforting.
in any case, i'm hopeful october will be a good month because it's october, duh!!
i've also taken the week of my birthday off as a treat to myself and even if i do nothing but sleep all that week i'll be happy
i'm going to try to enjoy the rest of my weekend and i hope if you're reading this you have a good one as well and may we both have a better week ahead as we move into spoopy season!

“Ooh, you know what we should do next weekend?” Deeks asked, not waiting for Kensi to reply. “Take the wonder twins to Mammoth.”
“Deeks, you can’t push something that isn’t there,” Kensi replied, sorting through the mail while he started prepping dinner.
“Hey, the last couple months, I’ve sensed a spark between them. You know, I have a thing about this thing.” Kensi snorted.
“Yeah, right.”
“Plus, I might have caught them making out in the burn room a while back,” he added with a smirk. Kensi gave him an admonishing look, setting the water bill to the side.
“Please tell me you di-oh my god,!” She cut herself off mid-sentence and grabbed his arm, holding out an envelope. “Babe, this is from the State Bar of California.”
Deeks instantly sobered and regarded the envelope warily. He’d known it was coming, but tried to put it out of his mind as much as possible. Taking it between his forefinger and thumb, he plucked the letter from Kensi’s hand and tossed it in the pile of junk mail by the fridge.
With everything that had happened with LAPD and FLETC, he’d forgotten to renew his license had lapsed and he hadn’t completed his yearly continuing ed. Which meant he had to take the California bar all over again.
“Deeks, aren’t you going to open it?” she asked, frowning at him. “I know you’re a little worried about it, but you can’t ignore your bar results indefinitely.”
He shook his head, resuming his previous task, and pointed a peeled cucumber at Kensi.
“You see, that’s where you’re wrong. If you I don’t open that-“ he gestured with the cucumber again- “then I have neither failed nor succeeded.” He sighed, letting some of his self-doubt show and admitted, “I really don’t want to mess this up like I did at FLETC.”
Kensi’s eyebrows furrowed, her slight annoyance with him fading as she cupped his elbows, forcing him to look directly at her.
“Oh, baby, you didn’t mess up anything at FLETC,” she assured him, voice filled with sympathy. “And you’re definitely not going to mess things up.”
“I wish I was that confident.” Deeks sighed, leaning against the counter, and resting his hands low on Kensi’s back. “I just keep thinking about how long it’s been since I was in law school. How much has changed. I thought I did alright during the exam, but maybe I was just too confident.”
“Well, no one has ever accused you of lacking confidence.” Kensi smirked at him, giving him a gentle nudge. “I happen to know that you are extremely talented at whatever you put your mind to. Especially law.” She handed him the envelope again with an encouraging smile. “C’mon open it.”
Rolling his eyes at her, he slid a finger under the flap while leaned against him. He pulled out a single sheet of paper, skipping over the explanation of scores and terminology to the bottom where a table of scores was listed. He swallowed heavily, glancing up at Kensi who was watching him eagerly, teeth pressed against her bottom lip.
“Uh, I passed,” Deeks muttered hoarsely, handing the paper to Kensi.
“Passed it? Babe, this says your scores are in the 99th percentile!”
she exclaimed, throwing her arms around him in a tight hug. “Congratulations.”
“Thanks.” He chuckled, feeling a little light headed. “I guess this means I get to be a lawyer again.”
“And we are very grateful for that, Counselor,” Kensi said in a low voice, pressing a smacking kiss to his lips.

A/N: Inspired by my recent exam. We’re going to pretend for this one that a license to practice law can completely expire, forcing the lawyer in question to take the bar again.

Writing a Practical Spirit Contract
Wordpress Version
Spirit contracts are formal agreements between a practitioner and spirits to get certain results in exchange for offerings. Contracts are best when something has multiple components that should play out a certain way to meet the goal the best, succeed in succession, or where there are multiple highly related requests. They're unnecessary for simple goals, or to successfully complete just one part of a process.
For an example of a type of situation that warrants a good contract: let's say you want to get a boyfriend/girlfriend. Well first you have to put yourself out there, if you aren't already. And you have to make sure that you're getting out at the right places: you're more likely to score a date at a bar or classes than a grocery store! Then you must attract or meet the right people, and dissuade those you aren't compatible with. After that you have to succeed on several dates. So in this process, there are several components that must go right in succession.
On the other hand, if your goal is simply to "attract love", then a spell or a simple offering to a spirit would be best. It is too broad and unfocused for a contract; there are many ways that attracting love can manifest.
Writing Spirit Contracts
Writing spirit contracts is timely, but relatively simple. Like a real contract, a spirit contract should have these basic components:
Who
Terms
Reward
Timelines
Signature
Writing a contract is beneficial to both the practitioner and spirit. For the practitioner, it can help you to solidify and focus on what, and how many things, should go right, and in what way is "right", for you to manifest a long-term goal. For the spirit, it helps to clarify exactly where they should come in. It tells them what factors are out of the practitioner's direct control, or where the practitioner has weak control.
Contracts should only be with spirits you trust: to not to harm you, and to actually manifest results.
There is no point in going through the effort of making such a lengthy and specific deal if you cannot trust the other spirit to not twist your words, and to actually bring the goals to fruition. If you have never been able to manifest a goal with clear communication of deadlines and ability limitations with the spirit you have in mind, then look to another. It's better to hear "that is beyond my capabilities" than "wait" and "wait..."...but the goal never happens, or happens several years later when that length of time isn't warranted. This should be a spirit that you have a practical working partnership with, not simply friendship.
Additionally this needs to be a spirit you can communicate with, clearly, directly, and truthfully. This should not be a spirit that:
You hesitate to question, such as a god or goddess
You cannot contact frequently
You struggle to communicate with clearly, whether it be through clairaudience or some form of divination
This should be a spirit that you can call up frequently to ask questions, check on progress, or provide information on what you have done on your side to bring the goal to fruition.
The contracts can be as formal or informal as you wish them, as long as the above components are included. Therefore, using first or third person to refer to yourself is up to you. But if you really want to be particular or formal, go with third.
Now, for more detail on each component of the contract:
I. Who?
A contract needs to list who both sides are. List yourself first. Whether you use your magical name or real name, or any other name or nickname to identify yourself is up to you.
My name is X, I am the requestor of this contract.
Then list your spirit(s). It is best to be as specific as possible, including their ranking or title if they have any.
For this contract, I am asking for the assistance of Librarian Spirit Y, who resides in the Library of Woah.
II. Terms
List your goals, ideal or possible methods of achieving them, and actions, events, or methods that should be avoided. It should be clear where the spirit should interfere, boost, or otherwise aid with their magical abilities. It may help to say where the spirit can use their own best judgement, though that's not always necessary to include. It is beneficial to also include what you are doing on your side to try and bring the goal to fruition.
This can be in paragraph form, List form, or a mixture. Whatever you are comfortable with.
Example of Paragraph Form:
I am trying to study well to pass my Biological exam with an A. However, I struggle to focus due to the noise level of the library, and I am not certain what to study. Straight memorization is also not a strong suit of mine. I ask that you kindly aid in controlling the noise level in the library, whether it be by quieting other students or helping me to find a quiet study location, or other means. Please guide me to figure out what to study, by helping me figure out who I should talk to (How should I approach the teacher/TA? What classmates of mine know what they're doing? Which tutors would be best for me?). And please use your magical abilities to boost my capacities for memorization as well.
List Form:
Goal: Study well to pass Biological exam with an A
Issues/Where Aid is Needed:
Control level of noise in the library, particularly where I study
Guidance on what to study; and who to ask about that
Boost my memorization capabilities
What I am doing on my side:
Studying for 1 hour daily, from 7-8 PM
Exploring the library more to see if there are other, less-popular areas I'm not aware of
Asking my older friends who've taken this class before what the exam was like
III.Rewards
The purpose of rewards is to motivate the spirit to complete the task(s) successfully, of course. The reward should be an offering of some sort; whether it be at traditional offerings such as food or incense, or a service such as picking up litter.
For multi-part tasks, or tasks where partial completion is possible, I suggest having partial rewards. As the name states, it won't be the same as a full reward; it will only be part of the reward, or an offering that is not as valuable to the spirit.
Example:
Bio is my weakest subject, so I usually get C's on them. So rewards are as thus:
Full Reward: I receive an A on my bio exam
I will clean up some of the grafitti in the bathrooms I can access (ones made with permanent marker, pen, or pencil)
I will leave offerings of coffee and tea in my dorm room, daily, for one week
Partial Reward: I receive a B on my bio exam
I will clean up some of the grafitti in the bathrooms I can access (ones made with permanent marker, pen, or pencil)
No Reward: I receive a C or lower on my bio exam
IV. Timelines
All contracts need to have a timeline. This lets both sides know how long they are bound by the terms.
Consider the following:
Is there a specific deadline to your goal? "The exam is on March 31st."
Is there a timeframe? "If you qualify for an interview, we will call you within the next two weeks."
Or will it be a renewing, long-term service? "I seek your protection for a full year. This contract will renew each year on the Spring Equinox."
V. Signature
First you must confirm with the spirit if they agree to the terms of the contract. This can be done by simply speaking with the spirit via clairaudience, or may be confirmed via divination.
Once both parties agree to the terms, both will sign it. On the practitioner's side that's easy, simply sign your name on the contract, or with a seal that represents you. For the spirit to sign is a bit trickier. If the spirits have their own seals or sigils, such as the demons from the Ars Goetia, then place that on the contract. If not, then ask the spirit if they have a signature of their own to use; whether it be a sigil or an actual signed name, and use that. Or, do automatic writing, with your hand guided by the spirit, to sign the contract on their behalf.
The Final Compontent: Starting and Working the Contract
The above was just writing the contract, here is how it'll play out
You write your side of the contract, as much as possible
Summon the spirit, present the contract and discuss it. Ask if there are any changes it would like
Confirm and agree the contract with the spirit, and sign it.
Once the contract has begun, communicate with the spirit on the regular. Progress checks and informing of issues should be done on both sides. For example, if you have a yearly contract for protection, check in on a regular basis to ask if there has been any suspicious activity that has gone unnoticed by you.
When the contract has been completed, partially completed, or the deadline has passed, discuss the contract once more. What went wrong/right, and what rewards are justified?
Contracts are a useful tool that can help spirit workers to list and achieve what they aim in life, while building a practical and fulfilling relationship with the spirits they work with.

Dog License In India
The Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation passed a proposal to regulate pet ownership in its municipal area on September 13, 2019. An expert committee has been formed to devise pet registration rules and decide the fine amount for people allowing their dog to poop in public spaces. The committee had first suggested `5000 as fees for the registration of pet dogs, which was later brought down to ₹`1000 after the civic body received several complaints by pet owners requesting a reduction in the steep amount.
The committee will first study pet registration charges and laws in different states of the country before starting with the task of formation of by-laws and other modalities for this planned move. The municipal board will also levy fines on pet owners found with unregistered pets. Moreover, the board has decided to penalise pet owners ₹500 every time their dog is found defecating in open areas. Dinesh Chandra Singh, Municipal Commissioner, said that the residents of Ghaziabad will be informed about the rules soon. dog license online india
Creature Companion asked readers and followers to share their views on the issue of dog licensing and registration on our social media handles. Many pet parents came forward to share their thoughts on this vital topic.
Ketan Panchal, Founder K9 Academy shares, “Pet registration is a good idea. It would give your pet an identity and at the same time the pet parent will get more responsibility. As a dog father and a good civilian, you must keep your house and city clean. You must clean after your dog. I always carry potty bags when I take my dog out. I also train many dogs in Ahmedabad. I request everyone to clean after their pets. Society will accept you and your pet with love if you keep the area clean.”
Bhanu Maheshwari, pet parent to male Labrador Jojo, opines, “Having your dog registered with a kennel is one of the first things that should be done. Also, if you have a dog in a complex where other apartment owners consider you and your dog to be a nuisance, having your dog registered acts as an additional support. Moreover, no one likes to step in pet waste and spread it into homes. Even if there is no restriction, cleaning up after your pet is always the right thing to do. It’s the law!”
The funds from registration fees are used to support many noble causes across the globe such as animal shelters, investigations regarding cruelty to animals and emergency animal rescues during natural disasters. Not only this, pet licensing offers numerous benefits such as increasing vaccinations, reunion with lost pets and helps governments to maintain a registry of the pets in their area. Pet registration also helps to reduce the number of incidents pertaining to the defecation by pets in public areas and dog-bites in cities.
Creature Companion strongly supports the concept of responsible pet ownership and recommends that everyone owning a pet in India get their pets registered with their local civic bodies to ensure their safety and support the development of companion animal facilities across the nation.
PET REGISTRATION REGULATIONS INDIFFERENT INDIAN STATES
Today all major metropolitan cities of the country have some laws regarding lincensing of pets. Let’s take a look.
Delhi/NCR- According to Section 399 of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, every dog owner should register his/her pet. The canine registration requirements include annual registration charges of `500 along with the dog’s vaccination proof, its picture and an identity proof stating its address and breed information.
Gurgaon- The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has a provision for pet registration, however it is not mandatory. Pet owners can register their dogs and cats by paying a fixed annual charge of `500 and providing requisite medical and neutering certificates.
Noida- Noida is yet to come up with any laws regarding pet registration.
Lucknow- Pet owners have to shell out yearly charges of `500, `300 and `200 for registration of big (Doberman, Labrador, German Shepherd); small (Shih Tzu, Pomeranian, Spitz) and local indie (Indian Pariah) dog breeds respectively. Failing to get your dog registered will lead to a heavy penalty of `5000.
Mumbai- Under Section 14, rule number 22(a) sub-clause 386 of Maharashtra Municipal Provincial Act, every pet owner must obtain a dog license for his/her pet canine. The pet parent needs to submit a valid address proof; a passport size picture of the dog; latest vaccination card with owner’s full name, address, contact number, and name of the vet along with the issuing clinic; and fees of `75 for new registration and `50 as renewal charges.
Bengaluru- Bruhat Bengaluru MahanagaraPalike (BBMP) had issued pet licensing by-laws in 2018, according to which pet dogs had been capped at one per apartment and three per independent house in the metropolitan city. The municipal body had further issued a list of 64 approved breeds for apartments. To get their pets registered, pet owners needed to provide BBMP with updated vaccination records of their pets along with the pet’s details like name, age, breed; and their name and contact details. The license fee was `110 for the initial year. However, the bylaws were withdrawn by the municipal authority after several complaints were received from residents regarding their unsuitability.
Guwahati- Registration of pet dogs over three months of age is mandatory under the GMC Act, failing which erring pet parents are punishable under law. The responsibility for registration falls on the NGO/society, which is allowed to collect `100 as registration fees and `10 as application fees per dog from owners. The NGO/society is then to collect the Metal Tag from GMC Veterinary branch after payment of `60 per dog and get the signed registration certificate from the GMC Veterinary Officer after submitting photograph of pet owner with dog along with duly filled in form A and B of Levy of Tax on Dogs kept within the city of Guwahati Byelaws, 1975.
Pune- Pune Municipal Corporation accepts advanced registration charges of INR 500 for a period of ten years (`50 per year). Owners need to submit three passport size photographs of the pet along with its anti-rabies certificate and owner’s address proof. However, the pet needs to be re-registered at the municipal body’s ward office each year.
Indore – According to registration procedures laid down by the Indore Municipal Corporation, pet owners just need to visit the nearest government veterinary clinic along with their pet and its latest vaccination records and submit a nominal annual amount of `100 to procure a pet license.
Chennai– The health department of Greater Chennai Corporation issues the mandatory dog license to pet parents after collecting a registration fee of `50. The registration comes along with free immunisation for canines at corporation-run pet clinics across the city. Pet parents need to supply the pet’s details including name, colour, breed and age with their full name and contact details. GCC is also planning to take the registration procedure online and considering to revise the annual license charges.
Chandigarh– The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (CMC) has issued Chandigarh Registration of Pet Dog Bylaws, 2010 under which it is mandatory for pet owners to register their pets exceeding the age of four months with the civic body. Not more than 2 dogs per family are allowed. Blind persons are exempted from the licensing amount and the registration will remain valid till the pet is alive.
The registration procedure involves submission of a duly filled-in application form, an undertaking by the dog owner agreeing to adhere to the bylaws, a nominal registration charge of `200 per dog, a vaccination certificate from a registered veterinary practitioner, and two passport size photographs of the pet. After the licensing procedure is complete, a metal badge is issued which the dog has to wear on its collar for verification. Defaulters are penalised with a fine of `500 per dog and/or face impounding of their dogs by the civic authority. The municipal body had proposed amendments to the bylaws in 2018 which included increasing the registration amount to `1000 for pedigree dogs, number of dogs owned per family to 4 (if 2 of them are adopted strays) and subsidised registration fee of `1 for adopted street dogs.
PET LICENSE LAWS ACROSS THE GLOBE
Toronto, Canada- Toronto Municipal Code Chapter 349 makes it mandatory for pet parents to get individual licenses for all dogs and cats owned by them. The pets can be registered online, in person, by phone or mail by filling a simple Pet Registration Application along with the owner’s credit card and the name and contact details of the pets’ vet. ID tags are included as part of the annual license fees, which is $60 for dogs and $50 for cats.
The registration fee is significantly reduced if the animal has been spayed or neutered, and in case the owner is a senior citizen. The pet parent needs to submit proof of the pet’s sterilisation and/or their age to avail these discounts. The registration amount is utilised by the Toronto Animal Services towards shelter and care for homeless animals. Getting a pet license also makes sure that the dog or cat is safely returned to the owner in case of it getting lost by identification through license tags and microchips.
Germany- Most European countries abolished the practice of Dog Tax in the 20th Century, however, the German authorities stubbornly refuse to scrape off this law. Pet parents in Germany are, therefore, required to pay the mandatory Dog Tax (Hundesteuer) according to the number of canines they own. Service dogs are exempt from the Hundesteuer and so are rescue dogs in their first year of adoption.
The registration amount for the first dog in Berlin is 120 EUR per year while registration of each additional dog in the same family costs 180 EUR annually. Re-registration is required every time the owner moves to a new residence. Each state has its own pet registration requirements and fees. Pet owners also need to pick up after their dog and follow the local leash laws.
There is no taxation for cat ownership in the country. However, both dogs and cats need to be licensed. The dog tax and registration fees are utilised towards creation of dog-related services such as dog waste bins. In addition, many states have a mandatory procedure for personal liability insurance which covers all kinds of unexpected damages caused by pet dog(s).
New Zealand- The country has formulated regulations for canine licensing and registration under the Dog Control Act 1996. All dogs over 3 months of age need to be registered with their city or district council. The licensed dogs are required to wear a tag indicating the council, registration number and registration expiry date. Registration charges vary according to council, neuter status, urban/rural accommodation, dangerous/menacing nature and other factors. Registration fees are lower for working dogs while disabled canines are exempted from these costs.

Journal Entry - October 1st, 2021
It’s now October and I can feel 2021 quickly slipping away. This time of year always brings about reflections for me. It’s interesting that in the fall, time seems to pass more quickly than it did in the spring. The summer flew by too, perhaps because I was enjoying it.
This year started out really rough and I had predicted that the rest would be much of the same. To my surprise, the first quarter of this year was the low point and my life has improved drastically since then. In January this year, I caught covid at my job, during my first week back after working from home for nearly 9 months. Needless to say, I was pissed and that incident later led me to quit my very good paying job. I recovered from covid with a new appreciation and perspective on my health. Covid changed how I smelled, tasted and desired. The processed foods I grew up eating no longer appealed to me. I couldn’t bare to eat it anymore. The only thing that my stomach could handle was more natural foods, like fresh produce. It’s sparked an awareness of my horrible relationship with food, something I’m working on everyday.
Post-covid, I was struggling to stay afloat mentally. I was trying to balance working full time, taking graduate classes, conducting tele-therapy with children as an intern for the first time ever with no experience, and being a human with needs, desires and relationships. This was honestly the worst semester of school I’ve ever experienced. To make matters worse, in February, my sweet lil ferret Nova got hit hard with cancer and we had to put her down. It was very sudden and one of the most painful experiences I’ve been through. Nova meant the world to me. She had the brightest soul. The kind that would change the entire vibe when she scampered in the room. She was also so sneaky too. I’ve come to cherish the moments I had with Nova and I so very much appreciate the time we had together. Like all horrible things, there was some positives to take away. Nova’s death sparked a birth in me. I renewal of life. She taught me what was truly important in this world. Grieving my precious ferret baby allowed me to release all that I can’t control. Since then, my spiritual journey has taken off and I’m more aligned with my soul and purpose than ever.
As the months progressed, I finished my second semester of graduate school with much relief. It was a difficult semester and I took a very needed get away to the mountains of NC, on our annual family vacation. This yearly trip consists of the people in my life that are so close, they might as well be family. It was a great time full of love, good food and a healthy dose of mind-altering substances. This trip is particularly significant to me because of the relationships that were formed and the conversations that later led me to important personal discoveries. My mountain adventure was the start of a fun-filled summer that involved lots of self-reflection and growth, traveling and learning how to release things that no longer serve me. By June, it was very clear to me that my job was not in alignment with my higher purpose and was only a means on income. It had become a place where I had been disrespected so many times, in the most subtle ways. And I let it happen because I could always ration that the money was worth it. I thought good money was worth being told I wasn’t allowed to share my opinions because they were different or that I should wear a bra because I was a distraction to my coworkers. This experience was brutal and degrading, but I’m honestly so thankful for it. I will let this story stand as a reminder that nothing is worth trading my self-respect. To this day, I am still so proud of myself for standing up for myself and quitting that job.
The rest of the summer was a haze of freedom, good times and genuinely living my best life. It was the first time in my life since I was 14 that I didn’t have a job or any responsibilities. I had the time, space and energy to pursue whatever I desired, and boy did I discover so much about myself. I became obsessed with spiritual/personal growth and took some deep dives in my own shadow. I focused on simply existing and let myself follow whatever came up for me. This magical period abruptly ended by the start of classes mid-August. I wasn’t ready to give up my time and energy for an institution I felt had already failed me. And it was quite a rough transition. I found myself having lots of sad days again. As a social work masters student, it was very apparent that the systems that are in place to ‘help’ people are the very thing that creates obstacles and stressors. I don’t see an effective way to fix the systems so I feel like the only solution is to dismantle them and create more effective ones. It seems silly to me, like we’re sweeping the floor wearing muddy boots. There’s no point. Yes, of course these people need help and we should do what we can to assist them. However, if we all focused on creating a better world and society, I know we’d be able to thrive. Anyways, that’s a whole other conversation for another day.
Fast forward and it’s now October 1st. I still feel trapped by school but I’ve adjusted to my new schedule and I’m able to have meaningful experiences that don’t make each day suck. I’m excited about the future and feel confident that I can create the life I want and enjoy. I know that I can shape my reality by speaking my intentions and desires to the universe. I feel intrinsically connected to the collective consciousness. I’m amazed at how things seem to just work out for me, which is a stark contrast to how I felt about most of my life until this point. I find it quite comical how powerful we are as human beings and I’m excited to continue to develop as a soul and energetic being. I’m excited about the new experiences I haven’t had yet and the downloads I’ve yet to receive. Life is scary and daunting but also so very beautiful and exciting. I’m so very grateful for this life.

A Buddeo-Christian Reflection on Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday is one of my favorite days of the Christian liturgical calendar. Perhaps an odd favorite to some, but a favorite none the less. Today we’re reminded that we are “but dust,” and if that weren’t readily apparent, that we’ll soon return to dust in plainly recognizable form. And, what are we to do with this point?
Dogen Zenji famously instructs adherents of the Zen way that “time is swiftly passing by and opportunity is lost- take heed, do not squander your life.” This is the exact same sentiment that the imposition of ashes and the appendant entry into an intentional period of intense spiritual practice conveys. Namely, that our known lives are precious and short, and we should engage them accordingly.
For many Christians, Ash Wednesday and the subsequent Lenten season are times of sobered atonement, penance, and austere spiritual practice. There is hope though, however heavenly, that with a right attitude and respective manner of life in right relationship with the divine, one can aspire to resurrection in any number of varieties (the Christian tradition has never really been monolithic, after all). But such hope is often beyond the confines of reason known so well to postmodern peoples. Too often the notion of resurrection itself is jettisoned into the realms beyond reason (with such heavenly hope as previously described), and I find that to be a shame.
Resurrection is a theme known well to the natural world. While perhaps we don’t see new life pumped into dead bodies as such (what’s a good story without a bit of hyperbole?), we frequently see new life emerging against the seeming odds- blades of grass pushing through the remnant snow at just the right time, barren tree limbs recovering from dormancy in becoming strewn with new buds, and bird songs cutting through the long silence of winter. Too, though, we routinely find our fellow humans being born into new life from periods of dormancy, and arguably death, if we have a mind to look where these examples are to be found, nearly always at the margins that most of us do our best to shy away from- no wonder they go often missed.
It’s somewhat remarkable to me that the verse “for dust thou art and unto dust shalt thou return” is found so early in the Judeo-Christian canon, in third chapter of the book of Genesis in fact. It’s a fundamental of the faith, and yet, like those aforementioned margins of society, one that we tend to shy away from, even in the face of it coming to be built into the yearly patterns of liturgical observance. That emphasis known, the question once again becomes, what’s the point? What are we to do?
Christians and Buddhists alike, indeed people of all faiths, can get caught up in the trappings of practicing their spirituality for some narrowly focused (typically postmortem and heaven-centric) hopeful eventuality, and frankly, I would offer that such an orientation is a grave mistake (pun intended). After all, resurrection isn’t really about heaven, lest we forget that in Christian orthodoxy the transfiguration and ascension were indeed distinct from resurrection, which even in the case of Jesus was still wrought with the wounds of life.
I would argue that integrous spirituality has little to do with the mystery that lies in wait beyond death (save for becoming wholly comfortable with such mystery) and almost everything to do with lives well lived in the present. Taking our temporal lot seriously is the first step toward such well-living, as we seek to overcome not only the eventual sting of ignorance (feigned or otherwise), but too our tendency for averted eyes writ large.
Ash Wednesday is a bit of ceremonial well designed to compel and inspire us to illumine our ignorance and to open our eyes. “Remember you are but dust, and to dust you shall return,” say the scriptures. Knowing our time is far from infinite, how do we live our lives? Denial and panic are common options, but not options available to the spiritual cultivar, who takes seriously not only the sacramental observances of the day, but the call to at least 40 days of ensuing intentional consideration and spiritual cultivation. Each year we are given the the cyclical charge of breathing renewed life into our oft wearied bones. We’re tasked with doing honor with our attention and intention to the sacred ever alive within us, that is, our own beating hearts that beat as the heart of the universe and reality itself- mystery upon mystery, known only to itself, so intimate that it is easily forgotten, yet so valuable that it is to be recalled, relived, and indeed resurrected into our consciousness, time and time again.

The transaction between the Chevalière d’Eon and Pierre Beaumarchais acting on behalf of the King of France:
We, the undersigned, Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais, specially entrusted with the private instructions of the King of France, dated Versailles, August 25, 1775, communicated to the Chevalier d'Eon in London, of which a copy certified by me shall be appended to the present act, on the one part;
And Demoiselle Charles-Geneviève-Louise-Auguste-André-Timothée d'Eon de Beaumont, spinster of age, hitherto known by the name of the Chevalier d'Eon, squire, formerly captain of dragoons, knight of the royal and military order of Saint Louis, aide-de-camp to Marshal the Duc and to the Comte de Broglie, minister plenipotentiary of France at the Court of Great Britain, late doctor of civil law and of canon law, advocate in the Parliament of Paris, Censor Royal for History and Belles Lettres; sent to Russia with the Chevalier Douglas, for the purpose of effecting the reconciliation of the two courts, secretary of embassy to the Marquis de L'Hospital, ambassador plenipotentiary of France at the court of her Imperial Majesty of all the Russias, and secretary of Embassy to the Duc de Nivernais, ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary from France to England for the conclusion of the late peace, are agreed upon what follows, and have hereunto subscribed our names:
Art. I. That I, Caron de Beaumarchais, do require, in the name of the King, that all official and private papers having reference to the several political negotiations with which the Chevalier d'Eon has been entrusted in England, notably those concerning the peace of 1763, correspondence, minutes, copies of letters, cyphers, etc., at present deposited with Earl Ferrers, Peer of the Realm, and Admiral, of Upper Seymour Street, Portman Square, London, ever a particular friend of the said Chevalier d'Eon in the course of his misfortunes and law-suits in England, that the said papers, enclosed in a large iron safe of which I have the key, be delivered to me after having been initialled by me and by the said Chevalier d'Eon, and of which the inventory shall be added and appended to the present act, as a proof that the said papers have been faithfully delivered.
Art. II. That all papers of the secret correspondence between the Chevalier d'Eon, the late King, and the several persons entrusted by his Majesty to entertain that correspondence, designated in the letters by the names deputy, solicitor, in the same way in which his Majesty himself was styled the counsellor, etc. . . . which secret correspondence was concealed beneath the flooring of the bed-chamber of the said Chevalier d'Eon, whence it was withdrawn by him, on October 5 of the present year, in my presence alone, being carefully sealed and addressed: To the King only, at Versailles; that all the copies of the said letters, minutes, cyphers, etc., shall be delivered to me, likewise attested with initials, and with an exact inventory, the said secret correspondence consisting of five portfolios or thick volumes in quarto.
Art. III. That the said Chevalier d'Eon is to desist from every kind of proceeding, judicial or personal, against the memory of the late Comte de Guerchy, his adversary, the successors to his title, the members of bis family, etc., and undertakes never to revive any such proceedings under whatsoever form, unless he be forced thereto by judicial or personal provocation on the part of some relative, friend, or adherent of that family; for which there can no longer be any apprehension, his Majesty having, in his wisdom, taken every necessary precaution to prevent the recurrence, in the future, of any such unseemly quarrels, whether on the one side or on the other.
Art. IV. And to the end that an insurmountable barrier be for ever raised between the contending parties, and that all ideas of law-suits or personal quarrels, no matter whence they arise, be permanently nullified, I require, in the name of his Majesty, that the disguise which has to this day enabled a woman to pass for the Chevalier d'Eon shall entirely cease, and without seeking to blame Charles-Geneviève-Louise-Auguste-Andrée-Timothée d'Eon de Beaumont for a concealment of condition and sex, the responsibility of which rests entirely with her relatives, and whilst rendering justice to the prudent, decorous, and circumspect conduct she has at all times observed in the dress of her adoption whilst preserving a manly and vigorous bearing; I require, absolutely, that the ambiguity of her sex, which has afforded inexhaustible material for gossip, indecent betting, and idle jesting liable to be renewed, especially in France, which her pride would not tolerate, and which would give rise to fresh quarrels that could only serve, perhaps, to palliate and revive former ones; I require, absolutely, I say, in the name of the King, that the phantom Chevalier d'Eon shall entirely disappear, and that the public mind shall for ever be set at rest by a distinct, precise, and unambiguous declaration, publicly made, of the true sex of Charles-Geneviève-Louise-Auguste-Andrée-Timothée d'Eon de Beaumont before she returns to France, and by her resumption of female attire; with all of which she should the more readily comply just now, considering how interesting she will appear to both sexes, alike honoured by her life, her courage, and her talents. Upon which conditions, I will deliver to her the safe conduct on parchment, signed by the King and his Minister for Foreign Affairs, which allows her to return to France and there remain under the special and immediate protection of his Majesty, who is desirous not only of according protection and security under his royal word, but who is good enough to change the yearly pension of 12,000 livres granted by the late King in 1766, which has been punctually paid to her to this day, into a life-annuity of the same amount, with an acknowledgment that the capital of the said annuity has already been provided and advanced by the said Chevalier d'Eon in furthering the concerns of the late King, besides other larger sums, the total of which will be remitted by me for the liquidation of her debts in England, with a copy on parchment of the deed for the said annuity of 12,000 livres tournois, dated September 28, 1775.
And I, Charles-Geneviève-Louise-Auguste-Andrée-Timothée d'Eon de Beaumont, hitherto known as the Chevalier d'Eon, as above styled, submit to the whole of the above conditions imposed in the name of the King, solely that I may afford to his Majesty the greatest possible proofs of my respect and submission, although it would have been far more agreeable to me had he deigned to employ me again in his army or in the diplomatic service, in compliance with my earnest solicitations and in accordance with my seniority. And because, excepting some exhibition of feeling, rendered in a measure excusable by a legitimate and natural desire to defend myself and by the most justifiable resentment, his Majesty is pleased to allow that I have always conducted myself bravely as an officer, and that I have been a laborious, intelligent, and discreet political agent, I submit to declaring publicly my sex, to my condition being established beyond a doubt, to resume and wear female attire until death, unless, taking into consideration my being so long accustomed to appear in uniform, his Majesty will consent, on sufferance only, to my resuming male attire should it become impossible for me to endure the embarrassment of adopting the other, after having tried to accustom myself to it at the Abbaye-Royale of Bernardine Ladies of Saint Antoine-des-Champs, Paris, or at any such other convent as I might select, to which I wish to withdraw for some months on arriving in France.
I declare that I entirely desist from all proceedings, judicial or personal, against the memory of the late Comte de Guerchy and his successors, promising never to renew them unless driven to such a step by judicial proceedings, as above stated.
I further pledge my word of honour that I will deliver to M. Caron de Beaumarchais all official and secret papers, whether concerning the embassy or the aforesaid secret correspondence, without reserving or retaining to myself a single document, upon the following conditions, to which I entreat his Majesty's approval:—
1. Seeing that the letter of the late King, my most honoured lord and master, dated Versailles, April 1, 1766, by which he insured to me the annual pension of 12,000 livres until such time as he should improve my position, is of no further service to me so far as the said pension is concerned, which has been changed, to my advantage, by the King his successor, into a life-annuity of like amount — that the original letter should remain in my possession as testimony of the honour the late King deigned to bestow on my loyalty, my innocence, and my irreproachable conduct during all my misfortunes, and in all matters he deigned to confide to me, whether in Russia, whilst serving in his army, or in England.
2. That the original receipt given to me in London on July 11, 1766, by M. Durand, minister plenipotentiary in England, in exchange for the secret order of the late King, dated Versailles, June 3, 1763, delivered to him by me, intact, and of my own free-will, shall remain in my possession, as authentic testimony of the complete submission with which I surrendered the secret order in the own hand of the King my master, which of itself justified my conduct in England, so often described as being obstinacy by my enemies, and which, in their ignorance of my extraordinary situation in relation to the King, they have even dared to qualify as high treason.
3. That his Majesty will deign, as a special favour, to satisfy himself at the expiration of every six months, as did the late King, of my being alive and of my whereabouts, to prevent my enemies from ever again being tempted to undertake anything to the prejudice of my honour, my liberty, my person, and my life.
4. That the cross of Saint Louis, won by me at the peril of my life, in combats, sieges, and battles in which I took part, where I was wounded, and served as aide-de-camp to the general, and as captain of dragoons and of volunteers in Marshal Broglie's army, with bravery to which all the generals under whom I served have borne witness, shall never be taken from me, and that the right to wear it on any garments I may adopt shall be conceded to me for life.
And if I may be permitted to add a respectful demand to these conditions, I would venture to observe that, at the moment I am about to obey his Majesty in consenting to abandon for ever my male attire, I am entirely destitute of everything — linen, clothing, and apparel suited to my sex, and that I have no money to procure even ordinary necessaries, M. de Beaumarchais knowing well to whom the amount destined in part payment of my debts is owing, and of which I do not wish to touch one penny myself. Consequently, although I have no right to expect further favours from his Majesty, I do not refrain from soliciting at his hands the gift of a sum of money for the purchase of my female outfit, this unexpected, extraordinary, and compulsory expense not being my own idea, but solely in obedience to bis orders.
And I, Caron de Beaumarchais, still as afore styled, do leave with the said Demoiselle d'Eon de Beaumont the original letter conferring so much distinction, which the late King wrote to her from Versailles, April 1, 1766, when granting her a pension of 12,000 livres, in acknowledgment of faithful services.
I further leave with her M. Durand's original document. Neither of these papers can be taken from her by me without a severity that would ill accord with the benevolent and equitable intentions at present entertained by his Majesty towards the said Demoiselle d'Eon de Beaumont. As to the cross of Saint Louis, which she desires to retain with the right of wearing it in female attire, I must admit that, notwithstanding the extreme kindness with which his Majesty has deigned to trust to my prudence, zeal, and intelligence in the conduct of this affair, I am afraid I should be exceeding my powers in determining so delicate a question.
Considering, on the other hand, that the cross of the royal and military order of Saint Louis has ever been regarded solely as the proof of, and reward for, valour, and that several officers who were thus decorated, having abandoned the military career for the church or the law, continued to wear on their new garments this honourable evidence that they had worthily performed their duties in a calling fraught with great dangers; I do not think that there can be any objection to a like indulgence being granted to a valorous maiden who, having been brought up in male attire by her parents, and having courageously fulfilled all the perilous duties imposed by the profession of arms, may not have been aware of the impropriety of adopting the attire in which she had been compelled to live, until it became too late to change, and is therefore not in the least to blame for not having done so until now.
Considering, also, that the rare example offered by this extraordinary maiden is not likely to be followed by those of her sex, and can have no consequences; that had Jeanne d'Arc, who saved the throne and the states of Charles VII., fighting in male attire, obtained during the war, as has the said Demoiselle d'Eon de Beaumont, some military reward or other decoration, such as the cross of Saint Louis, it does not appear that, her task being completed, the King would have deprived her of the honourable reward for valour when requiring her to resume the garments of her sex, nor that any chivalrous French knight would have considered the distinction as being profaned because it ornamented the breast and attire of a woman who, on the field of battle, had ever shown herself worthy of being a man.
I, therefore, venture to take it upon myself, not in the capacity of envoy, lest I should abuse the power confided to me, but as a man persuaded of the rectitude of the principles I have just enunciated; I take it upon myself, I say, to leave with the Demoiselle Charles-Geneviève-Louise-Auguste-Andrée-Timothée d'Eon de Beaumont the cross of Saint Louis, and liberty to wear it on her female attire, without, however, its being understood that I bind his Majesty to this act should he disapprove my conduct on this point; promising only, in the event of any difficulty arising, that I will plead with his Majesty on her behalf, and, if necessary, establish her right thereto, which I believe to be legitimate, with all the power of my pen and the strength of my heart.
With regard to the request made by the said Demoiselle d'Eon de Beaumont to the King, for a sum of money to enable her to procure a female outfit — although such a matter is not included in my instructions, I will not delay taking it into consideration, such an outlay being, as a fact, the necessary consequence of the instructions of which I am the bearer, to the effect that she is to assume the garments of her sex. I therefore allow her, for the purchase of a female outfit, a sum of 2000 crowns, on condition that she will not carry away with her from London any of her clothing, arms, or any male apparel, lest the desire to wear them should at any time be stimulated by the sight of them. I consent to her retaining one complete suit of uniform of the regiment in which she has served, the helmet, sabre, pistols, musket, and bayonet, as souvenirs of her past life, just as are preserved the relics of loved ones now no more. Everything else will be given up to me in London, to be sold, the proceeds to be disposed of in such way as his Majesty may direct.
And this act has been made out in duplicate, between us, Pierre-Augustin-Caron de Beaumarchais, and Charles-Geneviève-Louise-Auguste-Andrée-Timothée d'Eon de Beaumont, under private seal, giving to it, on one side and the other, the whole force and assent of which it is susceptible, and we have, each of us, affixed the seals of our arms, in London, the fifth day of October, 1775.
(Signed)
Caron de Beaumarchais.

~ translated by Alfred Rieu, originally published in Un Aventurier Au Xviiie Siècle: Le Chevalier d'Éon by Octave Homberg & Fernand Jousselin
This document was actually signed some time latter, d’Eon wanted to backdate it to her birthday, as this was an official recognition of her gender she saw it as a sort of second birth certificate.

First Sunday of Advent - November 27, 2020 by Fr. Francis Xavier Weninger, 1877
A New ecclesiastical year! A new year of graces! The festivals of the Church are a spiritual tree, which yearly decks itself with new fruits, by the fresh commemoration of past great events and mysteries; a commemoration, which God blesses with special graces for every child of His Church. The Church, on every festival, prays as if the mystery which she commemorates had taken place that very day. In truth, as St. Augustine says, for God there is but one eternal day. But only those children of the Church gather these yearly fruits, who earnestly prepare themselves for the festival; and the more zealous their efforts, the more abundant their harvest. But just because the year commences with Advent, and because on a good beginning depends, in a great measure, the progress of a work, every Catholic should be anxious to celebrate this day, the first Sunday of Advent, in the spirit of the Church, in order to be animated with her spirit the whole year.
For this end I shall consider today with you the words of the Apostle: “The night is past, the day is at hand.” Mary, Mother of the promised Redeemer, give us thy maternal blessing! I speak in the most holy name of Jesus, to the greater glory of God!
“The night is past, the day is at hand.” These words of the Apostle the Church today makes her own. The effects of sin are exemplified by the properties of the night.
At night one either does not see objects at all, or sees them indistinctly. Thus also man in the state of sin, either does not see things that concern his salvation, or he does not see them clearly.
At night one does not work; and the same happens in the state of sin. The sinner can gain nothing for eternal life, even should he zealously practice external works of devotion.
At night the beasts of the wilderness prowl in quest of their prey. In the sinner’s heart passions are rampant, and seek for their base gratification.
Night brings sleep to man. Not unlike is the effect of sin on the soul. Sleep, as the proverb says, is the brother of death. The man who sleeps, sees not, hears not, eats not, labors not. Were he to remain always in this condition, he would, in a certain sense, be dead. Not very different is the spiritual state of the sinner.
He sees not; he does not recognize, does not perceive the malice and heinousness of sin. On the contrary, he denies the wickedness of the most abominable sins, pretending that they are but natural weaknesses, or he even praises them as virtues. He calls pride, self-respect; avarice, economy; anger, enmity, and revenge, righteous self-defense; impure attachments, harmless love; fraud, prudence. He looks but seldom into his conscience, and excuses himself as best he can to others and to himself, saying, that he is not so bad, that others are still worse, that he yet hopes to be saved, that God is infinite goodness, forgetting that He is also infinite justice.
Regarding his duties as a Christian, he thinks that he has fulfilled them, because in the morning he makes the sign of the cross, says a few prayers in the evening, hears Mass on Sunday, unless an entertainment or some business, even of small importance, calls him elsewhere, goes to confession once a year through human respect, and receives Holy Communion without devotion or thanksgiving, and, perhaps, even without due preparation. This seems to him sufficient. He forgets that it is the duty of every Christian to strive after sanctity; such an aim he leaves to priests and religious, as something not intended for ordinary Christians. He sleeps.
The sinner hears not. Even should the Holy Ghost admonish him by inspirations, the tumult of temporal business and enjoyment makes him deaf to that voice.
He eats not. He partakes not of the bread of life in order to grow in the imitation of Christ, and endeavors not by the practice of virtue to multiply his treasures and merits for heaven. He sleeps, and dreams of a life far different from that in which he is really engaged. He dreams of a life of ease and comfort in this world, and lives without a thought of approaching eternity. It will be well for him if the threat of divine judgment rouses him from his sleep, and if he obeys the call of the Apostle: “Rise, thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ will enlighten thee” (Eph. 5, 14)
As those who sleep dislike to be wakened, so the sinner dislikes all efforts to convert him, or rouse him from the sleep of sin. If he heeds the call of grace and returns, by a sincere conversion, to God, then he suddenly sees and recognizes the evil of his former state. The beauty of virtue reveals itself to him, and he becomes conscious of the necessity of fulfilling all his duties as a Christian. He listens now to the inspirations of the Holy Ghost, and makes use of all the sources of grace in order to live like a child of God.
But that this condition may be lasting, and the conversion be a true one–the contrary of which happens only too often–the Apostle calls to us today: ” Cast off the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light! By the expression: “Cast off,” the Apostle clearly points out the reason why so many presumed conversions are only deceptions. The sinner stops when only half way. He renounces for a time, and under certain circumstances, this or that sin; but no sooner, circumstances changing, do temptations regain their former strength, than he is the same sinner as of old. He renounces sin only partly, that is, he sins not so frequently, or for a time not at all. But he does not avoid new occasions of sin with sufficient care. He does not renounce sin entirely. He remains near it; and it is no wonder that we soon see verified in him the words: “And the last state of that man becometh worse than the first.” No; if our conversion is to be genuine, then we must follow the directions of the Apostle, and cast off the works of darkness. We must cast off not only sin, but also every occasion that leads to it, with that resolution of which Christ speaks to us when He says: “If thy right eye scandalize thee, pluck it out and cast it from thee;” that is, rather suffer temporal injury, rather sacrifice life itself, than commit sin or remain voluntarily in the occasion of doing evil.
But we must not be satisfied with practicing Christian virtues for a time, for the Apostle says: “Put on the armor of light;” which means that we must always and every-where practise those virtues which are required by our station in life, that we must put them on, so to say, like a robe for our soul. In this manner the works of light become at the same time weapons which help us to conquer as children of the Church militant.
Happy the souls who commence this Advent with an earnest will and renewed resolutions, and fulfill this twofold exhortation of the Apostle. They will gather rich fruits from the approaching festival of the Nativity, and they will continue to increase their store during the year they have so well commenced.
Let us begin the work of renovation at once; let us not put it off till the eve of Christmas, as our sluggish nature may suggest. Before the season of preparation is over, we shall have made considerable progress. God grant it! Amen!
“Brethren, it is now the hour for us to rise from sleep.”–Rom. 13, 11.
Again Advent, the time of grace, has arrived. As the life of nature demands the change of seasons that the earth be clothed anew with flowers and fruits, so also the spiritual life in the world of grace demands the renewed consideration of the mysteries of our redemption, as they are placed before our eyes in the order of salvation. These holy mysteries are imaged in the different periods of the year; and here again is verified the word of Holy Writ in praise of the divine wisdom of tint Creator: Who disposes all thing s sweetly, yet powerfully, and in wonderful harmony. It behooves us to co-operate with these dispositions of divine Providence, as Holy Church, our Mother, teaches us and demands of her children. The wish of the Church in regard to the celebration of Advent, is pointed out to us in today’s Epistle and Gospel. Let us meditate on their meaning that we may awake forever from the sleep of sin and its dreams. I said last year that the state of a sinner is a sleep. I say to you this year: The state of the sinner is a dream.
O Mary, conceived without sin, grant that we may during this Advent cleanse our hearts from every stain of evil! I speak in the most holy name of Jesus, to the greater glory of God!
St. Paul in today s Epistle, illustrates the state of sin from the qualities of night. How? We considered this last year on the first Sunday of Advent. This year I assert that the life of a man in the state of sin, is a dream. To make this my assertion clear by a memorable example, listen to what happened in Belgium in the reign of Philip the Good.
The king, one day found lying in the street a poor man totally intoxicated. He gave orders to have him carried to the palace, to be clothed in new and splendid garments, and to be laid upon the royal bed. When the man awoke, sobered by his sleep, he could not understand his position, and wondered what had happened. He looked around, rubbed his eyes, and could not make out whether he was awake or dreaming. While in this state of astonishment, the servants and courtiers of the king came to him, and, following their master’s instructions, persuaded him that he was really king, and that his former miserable state had been only an illusion. Highly delighted at what he had heard, he passed the day in royal happiness. At night, after he had relapsed through excessive drink into a state of intoxication, the king had him dressed again in his rags, and laid in the street. When he awoke, he thought that only in his dreams he had enjoyed the pleasure of royalty.
Let us now make the application: Man is in a similar condition when asleep in sin. His life is a dream. Let us draw out the comparison, and we shall recognize and admit the truth of this assertion.
He who dreams believes that he is in a different state from that in which he really is. He thinks that he is awake, yet he is not. He thinks that he sees, and yet he does not see. He thinks that he hears, he even sometimes believes that he listens to music and joyful songs, and yet it is all false. He thinks that he eats and drinks, and he does not. He thinks that he speaks sensibly, and he does not speak at all. He thinks that he walks, and he is in bed. He thinks he is well, and perhaps he is sick, very sick. He thinks he is rich, whilst in truth he is poor. Not unlike is the condition of sinners, of whom it is said in the seventy-fifth Psalm: “They have slept their sleep and have found nothing in their hands.”
The pleasures of this world appear to the sinner as the highest attainable good. They seem to him capable of satisfying the longings of his heart. He thinks that he provides for the present and the future; and yet all is deception, vanity of vanities.
And what causes this deception? I answer: Dreams arise because during sleep our excited imagination is not guided by reason and reality. Imagination not guided by reason and faith, makes the life of the sinner a dream.
The dream varies, however, with the nature of the night in which the sinner sleeps. This night is threefold: The night of unbelief–of misbelieve–and of a dead belief.
The unbeliever sleeps in the night of paganism, and he dreams. The sun of faith has not yet risen for him, or else has set again. Hence his degradation, his deception. Instead of being moved by every object that strikes his senses to glorify the Creator, he worships creatures, he idolizes himself.
The misbeliever dreams in the night with which a false creed has obscured his mind. The sunlight of the infallible doctrine of the Church does not shine for him. He thinks that he belongs to the true Church of Christ, that, though voluntarily misbelieving, he will still be saved. He dreams.
The condition in which a child of the Church lives when he is in sin, also resembles a dream. The world has placed itself between him and the sun of faith, like a moon. If in nature an eclipse were lasting, the sun would lose all his power, all his influence over organic life. In the same manner I say: The sinner though a Catholic, dreams. He thinks that, because he is a Catholic and believes, he is on the right path to heaven; but he does not consider the words which St. James uses: “Thou believest. Thou dost well : the devils also believe and tremble. Show me thy faith without works, and I will show thee, by works, my faith” (2, 18). Do you hear, sinner? The faith which your life has dishonored, has become the millstone that draws you still deeper into the abyss of hell.
And how fast is the sleep in which these three kinds of sleepers dream away their lives! Be it the night of unbelief, misbelief, or dead belief, which fills their minds with illusions ; experience teaches how difficult it is to waken them. They like to dream, and resist an awakening. I have met many in my life who slept, and to all appearances dreamed, and it was impossible to rouse them. I called to them as loud as I could, I shook them with all my strength, it was all in vain. I held the light close to their eyes; they smiled in their dream; the light fell on their eyes, but did not open them, and they continued to sleep and to dream.
This is a picture of sinners held captive by the illusions of their state.
Truly it is difficult to convert heathens and unbelievers to the light of faith, if God does not force them, so to say, by a miracle, to recognize the truth. Notwithstanding the numberless miracles which Christ Himself, His apostles, and their followers have wrought in confirmation of the Gospel, entire nations are yet asleep, and after nineteen hundred years almost the half of mankind is still buried in the darkness of unbelief, and dream the strangest dreams.
The same may be said of Jews and heretics. For nineteen hundred years have the former awaited the rising of that Sun which during all these years has sent His beams upon their heads; they still dream of a coming Messiah.
There are heretics who for fifteen hundred years have been separated from the true Church, although every child that believes in Christ must recognize the Catholic Church, because she is the first, as she is the only true Church of Christ. The Lord Himself assures us that: “The gates of hell shall not prevail against her.”
But what shall we say of the blindness of those sinners who are children of the Church? How obstinately they dream in their sleep of sin! What is the cause? St. John answers this question when he says: “Men loved darkness rather than the light” (John 3, 19). Notwithstanding all that is told them and proved to them, they, perhaps, only smile like those who are fast asleep–blink with the eyes of the mind at the light of faith, but do not open them.
May the Lord have pity on them, and give them a love of truth, that they may open the eyes of their mind and save themselves before as the gospel of today threatens the trumpets of the last judgment sound, and they are forced to cry:
Oh, what madness! We have erred, and the light of truth was not within us. Woe to us! The night of despair which now hangs over us is not a dream, it shall last forever!
“Be you like to men who wait for their Lord.”–Luke 12, 36.
Our first parents in Paradise, and through them the entire human race, received the promise of the future Redeemer and Saviour. Four thousand years, however, passed before the Son of God entered the world, in the fullness of time, and accomplished, through His suffering and death, the work of redemption. The world had first to be prepared for His arrival; man had to feel and experience that by himself he is not able to know and serve God, or to regulate his life, as the relation of creature to the Creator demands.
But also in preparation for the second coming of Christ, as Judge of the living and the dead, man ought so to use his time of life, that on the last day he may be able to stand with confidence before the tribunal of his Saviour, and be found worthy to enjoy in His company the fruits of redemption in the kingdom of heaven.
The most necessary preparation for so happy an issue is a longing for His coming, together with solicitude to prepare our hearts for His reception, even in this life.
O Mary, Queen of the prophets, thou who didst unite in thy heart the longing of all the prophets, and who, of all human beings, wast best prepared to receive the Lord, obtain for us grace so to regulate our lives that, when Christ comes to judge the living and the dead, we may be ready! I speak in the most holy name of Jesus, to the greater glory of God!
“He came unto His own, and His own received Him not.” Thus complains the Evangelist. Alas! with how much reason! Notwithstanding the immeasurable wretchedness into which sin had precipitated us, and to redeem us from which Christ came upon earth, the words of the Evangelist were literally fulfilled: “And His own received Him not.” Bethlehem closed its doors against Him, at His birth; Jerusalem disowned Him and nailed Him to the cross. The hearts of the children of Israel, whom God had especially elected, and by the voice of the prophets again and again admonished, were, after four thousand years, not prepared to receive Him.
Neither did the heathen welcome with joy and gratitude the message of His coming. Only too soon did they arise with all the rage of persecutors against the Kingdom of Christ,–against His Holy Church.
All the apostles, whom the Lord sent over the entire world to preach the Gospel, suffered martyrdom. St. John, although not actually deprived of life, was thrown into a caldron of boiling oil, and was saved only by a miracle. Seventeen millions of martyrs shed their blood, before the Romans, as a people, confessed Christ. And how many nations exist, even today, who obstinately refuse to receive the message of salvation!
But, even among those who have had the happiness to become children of the Church through baptism, how many deserve the reproach: “And His own received Him not!” Not to speak of the many people who, by voluntary misbelief, separate themselves from the Church and exclude from their hearts the Lord whom they recognize as their Redeemer; let us particularly think of those who, while to all appearances they belong to the Church, yet, through sin, banish Christ from their hearts.
“The kingdom of God is within you,” says the Lord. Thus it should be. As Christ entered the world for the salvation of all mankind, so likewise He came to save each soul, and He, therefore, demands to be received by each one of us. This, however, is the case only when we remain in the state of sanctifying grace, and when we open our hearts to the inspirations of actual grace, to be enlightened and strengthened, that, in following Christ, we may fulfill the most holy will of God, and thus be saved through Christ.
Again and again the Lord’s voice invites each soul; He watches and knocks at the door of our heart, as Holy Writ teaches, and calls out to us: Open–let me enter into thy heart. Christ Himself says: We will come, the Father and I, and make thy heart our abode. This disposition, this care, this co-operation with the grace of the Lord, made the saints what they were.
But how much in this regard is amiss in those, who, though they call themselves children of Holy Church, banish by mortal sin the Lord from their hearts, and do not open them to the inspirations of grace, but listen only to the spirit of the world? Instead of preparing an abode for Christ, they prepare a dwelling for Satan.
And why is it, that so many, while they do not drive Christ by mortal sin from their hearts, yet do not prepare a worthy habitation for Him? Because they do not meditate earnestly and frequently upon the words of the angel to the apostles, on the day of our Lord’s ascension: “This Jesus shall so come again as you have seen Him going into heaven.”
Scripture mentions a twofold coming of Christ upon the earth. One as Redeemer, which, in the fullness of time, has already taken place; the other at the end of the world, when, as Judge, He will demand of every soul an account of the manner in which the graces of redemption have been employed. Hence we also speak of a twofold Advent. The first commenced in paradise with the promise of the Redeemer, and lasted till the Ascension; the second commenced with that day, and will last for each man in particular until death, when Christ will judge him, and for the whole human race together until the day of final reckoning.
Every one must, therefore, prepare himself in the time of Advent, so that when the Lord comes, he may be awake and ready. Hence the often repeated admonition of Christ and His Apostles: “Be prepared!”
But to know in what this preparation consists, we need only think of what we do when we prepare ourselves for the arrival of an expected guest.
We first consider the person who is to come, his dignity, his importance; he may be a king, an emperor, or, perhaps, even the Pope himself. The second thought is of the relationship in which we stand to him ; whether there are ties of love and friendship between us; whether he is a father, brother, friend, or benefactor from whom we have received all we possess, and to whom we owe the happiness of our life; whether he is a man on whose favor our entire future depends–a man to whom we are accountable, who holds in his hands our life, because he is the Judge who is to pass sentence upon us. How all this may be applied to Christ’s coming, is evident.
Jesus, whom we expect, is the King of kings, the Lord of hosts, to whom all power in heaven and upon earth is given. He is the Father who bestowed upon us the right to be children of God, the Brother who divides with us his heritage of glory, the Friend who gave his life for us, the Benefactor from whom we have every gift of body and soul for time and eternity; it is He who will be our Judge, and who will determine our future lot for all eternity. He who will be the Bridegroom of our souls, if He has dwelt in our hearts during our life here below.
With how much solicitude should we endeavor to employ our lives in such a manner that we may be prepared to receive Him with exultation when He comes!
While expecting some one we love, we carefully remove from our dwelling all that might be displeasing to him, and try to procure all that he likes and does him honor.
Applying this to the Advent of our life, I say: Cleanse your heart, especially in this holy season, from all stain of sin. Fill it with fragrant thoughts of longing love, and adorn it with precious jewels of virtue, in order that you may say with David: “My heart is prepared!” Come, O Jesus my Saviour! Amen! (6)
Adapted from The Liturgical Year by Abbot Gueranger
This Sunday, the first of the ecclesiastical year, is called, in the chronicles and charts of the middle ages, Ad te levavi Sunday, from the first words of the Introit (To Thee have I lifted up my soul…); or, Aspiciens a longe, from the first words of the one of the responsories of Matins (Looking from afar, I see the power of God coming…).
The Station is at St. Mary Major’s. The Stations, marked in the Roman Missal for certain days in the year, were formerly processions, in which the whole clergy and people of Rome went to some given church, and there celebrated the Office and Mass. This usage, which dates from the earliest period of the Roman Church, and of which St. Gregory the Great was but the restorer, continued to exist in some measure in later times, though with less solemnity and concourse of the people.
It is under the auspices of Mary—in the splendid basilica which possesses the Crib of Bethlehem, and is therefore called, in ancient documents Sancta Maria ad Praesepe—that the Roman Church recommences, each year, the Sacred Cycle. It would have been impossible to select a place more suitable than this for saluting the approach of the Divine Birth, which is to gladden Heaven and earth, and manifest the sublime portent of a Virgin Mother. Let us go in spirit to this august temple, and unite in the prayers which were, for so long a time, being offered up there, and which we will now explain.
In the night Office, the Church commences the reading of the Book of Isaias, who, of all the Prophets, has the most distinctly and explicitly foretold the Messias; and She continues this same Book until Christmas Day inclusively. Let us strive to enter into the teaching of the holy prophet, and let the eye of our faith affectionately recognize the promised Savior in the descriptions, sometimes consoling and sometimes terrifying, under which Isaias depicts Him.
The first words of the Church, in the still of midnight, are these: Regem venturum Dominum, venite adoremus. Come, let us adore our Lord and King, Who is about to come to us.
This first duty of adoration complied with, let us listen to the oracle of the prophet Isaias, delivered to us by the Holy Church:
The vision of Isaias, the son of Amos, which he saw concerning Juda and Jerusalem, in the days of Ozias, Joathan, Achaz, and Ezechias, kings of Juda. Hear, O ye heavens, and give ear, O earth, for the Lord hath spoken: I have brought up children, and exalted them: but they have despised Me. The ox knoweth his Owner, and the ass his Master’s crib: but Israel hath not known Me, and My people hath not understood. Woe to the sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a wicked seed, ungracious children. They have forsaken the Lord, they have blasphemed the Holy One of Israel, they are gone away backwards. For what shall I strike you any more, you that increase transgression? The whole head is sick, and the whole heart is sad. From the sole of the foot unto the top of the head, there is no soundness therein; wounds, and bruises, and swelling sores; they are not bound up, nor dressed, nor fomented with oil.
These words of the holy prophet, or rather of God Who speaks to us by the prophet, should make a deep impression on the children of the Church, at this opening of the holy period of Advent. Who could hear without trembling this voice of Our Lord, Who is despised and unknown, even at the very time when He is coming to visit His people? Lest men should be terrified at the splendor of His majesty, He divested Himself of it; and far from acknowledging the divine power of Him Who thus humbled Himself out of love for them, these men have refused even to know Him; and the crib where He lay after His birth, had, at first, but two dumb animals to honor or notice it (aside from His Mother and St. Joseph). Do you feel, Christians, how just are the complaints which your God here makes? And how your indifference for all His love is an insult? He calls Heaven and earth to witness; He utters anathema against the sinful nation, His ungrateful children. Let us honestly confess that we, too, have not known the value of our Jesus’ visit to us, and that we have but too faithfully imitated the obduracy of the Jews, who heeded not the bright light when it burst upon their darkness. In vain did the angels sing on that December night; in vain did shepherds receive and welcome the invitation to adore the Babe and know Him; in vain did the Magi come from the East, asking where they were to find the crib of the King that was born. At this last example, the city of Jerusalem was somewhat moved; but the astonishment was only for a moment, and the old indifference soon stifled the good tidings.
Thus it is, O Jesus, that Thou comest unto darkness, and darkness does not comprehend Thee. We beseech Thee, let our darkness comprehend the Light, and desire it. The day will come when Thou wilt disperse the spiritual and voluntary darkness of men by the awful light of Thy justice. Thy glory, O sovereign Judge, will be magnificent on that day, and we love to think upon Thy having it; but during these days of our life on earth, deliver us from Thy wrath. We are one great wound from the sole of the foot unto the top of the head; Thou knowest not where to strike: be then a Savior, O Jesus, in this Advent, for which we are now preparing. The whole head is sick, and the whole heart is sad; come, and raise up this head which shame and vile passions bow down to the earth. Come, and comfort this heart oppressed with sin and fear. We confess it, our wounds are deep and sore; come, Thou good Samaritan, pour in Thy soothing oil and heal them.
The whole world is in expectation of its Redeemer; come, dear Jesus, show Thyself to it by granting it salvation. The Church, Thy Bride, is now commencing another year, and Her first word is to Thee, a word which She speaks in the anxious solicitude of a mother for the safety of her children; She cries out to Thee, saying, “Come!” No, we will go no farther in our journey through the desert of this life without Thee, O Jesus! Time is passing quickly away from us; our day is perhaps far spent, and the shades of our life’s night are fast coming on; arise, O divine Sun of justice. Come! guide our steps and save us from eternal death.
The Epistle is from St. Paul to the Romans, Ch. 13:
Brethren, know that it is now the hour for us to rise from sleep. For now our salvation is nearer than when we believed. The night is passed, and the day is at hand. Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day: not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and impurities, not in contention and envy: but put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Savior, then, who is coming to us is the clothing which we are to put on over our spiritual nakedness. Here let us admire the goodness of God, Who, remembering that man hid himself after his sin, because he was naked, vouchsafes Himself to become man’s clothing, and to cover with the robe of His Divinity the misery of human nature. Let us, therefore, be on the watch for the day and the hour when He will come to us, and take precautions against the drowsiness which comes of custom and self-indulgence. The light will soon appear; may its first rays be witness of our innocence, or at least of our repentance. If our Savior is coming to put over our sins a covering which is to hide them forever, the least that we, on our part, can do, is to retain no further affection for those sins, else it will be said of us that we refused salvation. The last words of this Epistle are those which caught the eye of St. Augustine, when, after a long resistance to the grace which pressed him to give himself to God, he resolved to obey the voice which said to him: “Tolle, lege; take and read.” They decided his conversion; he immediately resolved to abandon the worldly life he had hitherto led, and to put on Christ Jesus. Let us begin this very day, and imitate this Saint. Let us long for that dear and glorious clothing with which the mercy of our heavenly Father is so soon to cover us; and let us say with the Church these touching words of the Gradual, which we cannot repeat too often during this time of the year:
None of them that wait on Thee shall be confounded, O Lord. Show, O Lord, Thy ways to me: and teach me Thy paths. Alleluia, alleluia. Show us, O Lord, Thy mercy: and grant us Thy salvation. Alleluia.
In the Gospel of today, taken from St. Luke, Ch. 21, Holy Church turns Her attention to the Second Coming of Christ:
At that time: Jesus said to His disciples: There shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, by reason of the confusion of the roaring of the sea, and of the waves; men withering away for fear, and expectation of what shall come upon the whole world: for the powers of the heavens shall be moved; and then they shall see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with great power and majesty. But when these things begin to come to pass look up, and lift up your heads; because your redemption is at hand…
Thou art to come, then, O Jesus, in all the terror of the Last Judgment, and when men least expect Thee. In a few days Thou art coming to us to clothe our misery with the garment of Thy mercy; a garment of glory and immortality to us; but Thou art to come again on a future day, and in such dread majesty that men will wither away with fear. O our Savior! condemn us not on that day of the world’s destruction. Visit us now in Thy love and mercy; we are resolved to prepare our souls. We desire that Thou shouldst come and be born within us, so that when the convulsions of nature warn us of Thy coming to judge us, we may lift up our heads, as Thou biddest Thy faithful disciples do, who, when the rest of men shall tremble at the thunder of Thy judgment, will have confidence in Thee, because they have Thee in their hearts.

Wake Up - Roger x fem Reader (smut)
Summary: It’s 1983 and Queen is recording their next album at the studio where you work, and things get a little heated between you and the drummer.
Word Count: ~4.3K
Warnings: smut, somewhat of an age gap (21 vs. 35), oral smut, language, phone sex smut, and some kind of sappy shit. 18+ please and thank you
[A/N: Using the same Roger x Reader concept as I did here, so I guess this is a series now, but I want to write them to be able to be read as one shots as well. This isn’t the one that was supposed to be next, but I had these two other requests sent in, and I’m doing these before that one because the story flows better if you want to read them as a series. Thank you @quirkydeaky & she who doesn’t want to be named ( 🐓) for the suggestions. (Pretend Reader & Roger have discussed what happens before and that it is completely consensual!) Potential sugar daddyesque thing (I don’t know how to describe it) developing, and smut, in case you missed that.]
⊱ ────── {.⋅ ✯ ⋅.} ────── ⊰
It was already a long, exhausting day and it wasn’t even noon. You had to leave home at 5am to pick a friend up at the airport. After bringing them home you had to run to the bank. You didn’t get to work until after 10 and you were going to have to leave around 3:00 to get to a doctor’s appointment. You probably should have just taken the day off, but if you would have, you’d not have gotten your daily Roger fix. The two of you got together alone a few times since that night a couple of weeks ago, not counting that time two days ago when he stayed behind at the studio when everyone else went to get lunch (he decided he wanted to have you instead). Of course you’d have liked it every night, as would he, but you understood that it couldn’t happen like that, so the two of you settled for at least being able to flirt with each other as often as possible.
Roger notices you gathering your things and ran out to catch you before you leave. “Where do you think you’re going?” he yelled as he flings the door open, surprising you, making you jump and scream.
“Stop doing that!” you yell, both of you laughing. He finds it amusing how jumpy you get when he sneaks up on you, so he never lets the chance to startle you pass him by. “I have a doctor’s appointment.”
His face turned concerned. “Are you okay?” He walks over and puts a hand on your shoulder.
“I’m fine,” you giggle. “It’s just a check up with the lady doctor.” His face falls, even more concerned than before. “I’m not pregnant, Roger,” you laugh. “It’s just my yearly visit and I need to renew my birth control prescription.” He exhales the breath he was holding in and starts to chuckle. “Not like I would know if you knocked me up this soon anyway,” you say seriously, but jokingly just to toy with him, after turning your back and walking away. “Guess I’ll find out in a little while, huh?” you turn around and tell him with a big toothy grin, starting to laugh again. “Scare me and I’ll scare you back.” He realizes you’re joking and flips you off, which you kindly reciprocate. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Roger.”
“Not if I see you before then,” he chortles as you walk out the door.
Before going home after the trip to the doctor’s, you stopped over at the grocery store to buy something that would be easy to make for dinner. You argued with some creep on the bus ride home who didn’t understand the concept of personal boundaries. You were tired since you had to get up so early this morning. Your boss was in a bad mood earlier and kept nitpicking at every little thing. So when you finally get inside your apartment, you’re loving the fact that you don’t have to talk to or see anyone else until tomorrow. After getting the food cooking, you run back to your room to change into comfortable clothes, throwing on a pair of shorts and a t-shirt, pulling your hair up into a ponytail and stop off at your stereo to get some music on before going back to the kitchen.
You set your plate of food on the table, and right as you’re sitting down to eat, there’s a knock on the door. “Dammit,” you whisper to yourself as you roll your eyes, and walk to the door. You look through the peephole and don’t see anyone, so you slowly open the door.
“Surprise!” Roger hollers as he jumps in front of the door, laughing hysterically after you scream and slap him on his arm for scaring you. “Missed you this afternoon,” he says as he leans against the doorframe and peaks out over his sunglasses. Those damn sunglasses, you groan to yourself. “Wanted to make sure you’re okay.”
You lean against the door and smile. “You’re ridiculous. It’s only been a few hours,” you tell him as you open the door and motion for him to come in. “I’m just about to eat dinner. Spaghetti. Want some?”
“You cook?” he asks with an amused tone to his voice. “Impressive.” You glare at him and stick out your tongue as you make a plate for him. He sits down at the table after grabbing a drink from the refrigerator, waiting for his food. “Van Morrison,” he nods, taking note of the music you have playing in the background. “You can cook and you listen to good music,” he jokes as you put his plate down in front of him before taking a seat. “And no one’s snatched you up yet?”
“Oh shut up,” you groan. “Maybe I don’t want to be snatched up,” you giggle as you take a bite of your food.
“Well somebody needs to,” he says before taking a sip of his drink. “Because it’s a shame to cook like this and not have anyone to feed it to.”
You start laughing. “It’s jarred spaghetti sauce I got from the store and I added meat to it. I’m not a 5 star chef.”
The impromptu dinner with Roger didn’t last long. You both ate rather quickly considering all of the talking you were doing. He told you about the rest of his day at the studio, how Brian was being difficult and Freddie left not long after you did because of all the bickering. You told him about your trip to the airport at that ungodly hour but spared him the details of your visit to the doctor. After cleaning the kitchen, you joined him in the living room where he was quite relaxed on the sofa, flipping through the tv channels with his arm thrown on the back of the sofa.
“I’m so tired,” you whine, plopping down next to him on the sofa and taking it upon yourself to curl up next to him, resting your head on his shoulder. “It’s been such a long day.”
“Get some rest,” he tells you as he pats you softly on top of your head. You’re expecting him to get up and leave, but he doesn’t. He stays right there, letting you relax, even moving his arm from the back of the sofa and wrapping it around your shoulder.
You fell asleep. You’re not sure when, or even for how long you had been sleeping, and you would still be sleeping had you not heard him saying your name.
“Y/N,” you hear him mumble. You can’t make out anything else he’s mumbling, thinking that’s because you’re not fully awake, so you lift your head and look at him. You start to giggle. He’s sound asleep, and as far as you can tell, he’s enjoying whatever it is he’s dreaming about. He has a soft smile on his lips, and he keeps letting out these cute, quiet groans.
When you start to sit up, you realize that your hand is resting on his waist. You look down to make sure you don’t push on him when you sit up and notice a significant bulge in his pants. Biting your lip, you look over at him again, his smile still there, and his groaning getting just a little bit louder. You scoot down, carefully to make sure you don’t disturb him, and climb over him to get off of the sofa and kneel next to him on the floor, ideas swirling around in your head. Should I? you ask yourself. You don’t even try to convince yourself not to. Smirking devilishly, you slowly start to unbutton his pants, looking back up to Roger as you softly unzip them, hoping he doesn’t wake up. Not yet, anyway. That’s why you don’t even try to pull his pants down to give you better access.
Carefully, you open the waist of his jeans and rub against the front of his boxers, watching for any reaction on his face. His smile goes away, but he’s still groaning and whispers your name sporadically. You feel his cock growing harder and harder with every move the palm of your hand makes down the shaft. You want him to wake up now. You want him to wake up with his dick already hard and you want him to ravish the hell out of you. But he still sleeps, even as you take his arousal out of his boxers, even as you rub the drop of precum around the tip with your thumb as you gently tapped his shaft with your other four fingers. “You make me so hard,” he whispers. You look up to him and he’s still sleeping. Sure, you could easily wake him up, but this was more fun.
You climb back on the sofa, position yourself between his legs and lower your mouth to the head of his dick, licking around the head at first before taking it all in your mouth, moving up and down, hoping he would wake up soon. “Fuck,” you hear him moan, making you take him out of your mouth and gaze up at him. How the hell is he still sleeping? you wonder, lowering your mouth back down and working harder to get him to wake up. He starts breathing heavier and moaning louder and his hips start to move. You know from previous experience that he’s close – real close – and you wish he would wake the hell up so he would know that this wasn’t all a dream. “Naughty girl,” you hear him groan as he grabs the hair on top of your hair and tugs it so you’ll look at him. He’s not sleeping anymore. You smirk at him as you slowly lift your head to look up at him. He smirks back and reaches down and starts to push off your shorts. “Take those off and turn around,” he says with a wink.
He moves his body to lay flat on his back, smiles and motions for you to take your place on top of him. He gently lowers you to his mouth, anchoring his mouth to your warm flower and began to flick his tongue up and down the slit. You were frantically trying to push his pants down from his waist, but the sensation he was creating as he was lapping at your box was making it hard for you to do anything. He used two fingers to open you up, plunging his tongue in as far as he could. You fell down quickly, taking his dick in your mouth again, your moans vibrating against his already pulsating member, making it hard for him to hold off. “Stop,” he desperately tells you. “I want to wait for you.”
You pull your mouth away and lay your head on his thigh, too weak to move in any other position, and you hold his rock in your hand. “You make me feel so good, Roger,” you groan, kissing his thighs close to his erection. His tongue moves to flick over your clit as his fingers move inside you, rapidly moving in and out. “Keep doing that,” you command him. “Don’t stop.” He’s enjoying this, and he could do it all night, but he’s about to explode, and he wants you to explode with him. You can hear the sounds of his tongue moving against your wet flower. You’re getting close, too, so you lift your head and take him back in your mouth, sucking on him hard and pulsing up and down quickly, his moaning against your core making it easy for you to release every ounce of pressure you have been holding in for the exact moment he is ready to burst with you.
He came first, his load shooting down your throat, and feeling the tremor his deep moan made against you helped you cum immediately after. After catching your breath, you climb off him and stand up. He scoots up a bit and pulls you back down next to him. “That was a nice way to wake up,” he says with a smile as he gently runs his fingers up and down your arm. “What time is it anyway?” He looks around to find a clock.
“Almost 11,” you sigh after realizing how late it was. You’re usually in bed at this time since you have to wake up early to get to work on time. You start to sit up but he pulls you back down again. “It’s late…”
“I don’t care,” he chuckles.
“You just want to stay like this the rest of the night?” you laughed. “Can I at least put my shorts back on? I’m cold.” You lean over to grab them off the floor but Roger pulls you back again.
“No,” he fusses. “Easier access this way,” he says with a laugh as he holds you tight, but you manage to wiggle yourself free and put your shorts on. “Are you kicking me out?” he asks, amused at this sudden spurt of awkwardness that seems to have taken over you.
“You are more than welcome to stay,” you tell him with your hands on your hips. “I have to go to bed or I’ll never make it to work on time. It takes 37 minutes to get there, and I have to wake up at 6 or I’ll miss the bus…” He’s laughing at your rambling and you’re getting frustrated. “What?”
He pulls you back down to the sofa. “It took me 15 minutes to get here from there.” He can see in your face that you don’t understand why he’s telling you this. “I can drive you there in the morning.”
“That doesn’t make sense,” you say. “Why come all the way over here to…” You raise an eyebrow, wondering if he’s trying to say what you think he’s trying to say.
“Am I welcome to stay or not?” he asks. “Because if I am, I would like to go to bed.” You wanted him to stay. You always wanted him to stay but he never did. And you knew if he did stay, that wouldn’t be good for this “no emotional attachment” rule you were doing very good at not breaking. This was just sex, that’s it. Good sex – okay, exceptional sex – and fun. Nothing more. That whole falling asleep together and waking up next to each other thing? Well, that was a door you didn’t know if you wanted to open.
“Stay,” you whispered with a grin. You immediately regretted it, but it was too late now. “Let’s go to bed.”
The two of you laid in bed, not touching each other, not knowing if you should be talking – not sure of anything anymore. “Roger?” you call to get his attention.
He rolls over on his side you look at you. “If I didn’t like you, I wouldn’t be here. If I didn’t enjoy your company, I wouldn’t be here. And I would never tell you all of this if I had any intention of never speaking to you again after we’re done recording.”
He answered every single question you wanted to ask him but would never dare. You didn’t want this to get serious right now (or ever), and you definitely didn’t want him thinking he could read your mind, so you had to think fast. “That’s nice,” you tell him rather dryly, being completely sarcastic. “How do I know you’re not just saying that?”
He started to do his playful growl and climbed over you to hover, tickling you and nibbling on your neck, making you laugh hysterically. “Just because you’ll say anything as long as the dick is big enough doesn’t mean I’m like that,” he mocked, referencing what you told Alan that night at the bar.
“I bet,” you laughed. “You probably tell all the girls that.”
He pins your hands above your head and gives you a sneaky grin. “Probably,” he says before bending down to give you a quick peck on the lips. “But you’re not those other girls.”
You grunt and roll your eyes, still laughing. “I’m sure you tell them that too,” you giggle. “You’re supposed to just be here for the sex and I’m supposed to be the emotional one.”
“If this was just about sex, I wouldn’t still be here,” he tells you. “I’d have been back at my place by now.” You stop laughing and look at him somewhat concerned, which makes him start to chuckle. “Am I making you nervous again?”
“Yes, you’re making me fucking nervous,” you grunt, pulling your hands free from his grip and pushing him off of you as you sit up. He lays back down, hands behind his head on the pillow and looks up at you with a grin. “This isn’t supposed to be anything more than…”
“I didn’t agree to that,” he bluntly stated, but with the grin still on his face. “You’re the one who insisted on that. I’m just going along with it.”
You throw yourself back down onto the bed, laying your head on your pillow, turned on your side, facing him, who is still grinning at you. “You’ve got to be joking right now,” you laughed. “Like I’m going to allow myself to get serious about you.” You can tell those words stung him a little bit and you felt terrible. It wasn’t your intention. “What I mean is, you’ll be done with your recording and then you’ll go back to London, and I’ll be here, and…”
“And what?” he asked. “That’s it? You’ll be done?” He had to be amused by the whole situation. He was always the one being the brutally honest one, the one taking what he wanted, and then moving on when he was done.
“You’ll be done,” you tell him, poking him in the chest. “I’ll still be here, living my mundane life, and you’ll be out there living yours.” You climb on top of him, his arms still behind his head, your hands resting on either side of him. “And if you say it’s not going to be like that, you’re lying.”
“Okay,” he chuffs as he pushes you off of him and grabs you, pulling you close to him. “Then I won’t say it.”
⊱ ────── {.⋅ ✯ ⋅.} ────── ⊰
The next morning he shuffles into the kitchen, looking completely spent but wearing a huge smile. “Good morning,” you chuckle. “Sleep well?”
“Mmm hmm,” he mumbled as he walked behind you and wrapped his arms around your waist. “You still smell like strawberries,” he chuckled. “I’d kiss you but I don’t have a toothbrush,” he said as he gave you a peck on the top of your head.
“I have a new one in the bathroom closet,” you tell him as you wave your hand back. “Toothpaste is in the medicine cabinet above the sink.” He lets go of you and starts to walk to the bathroom. “Hey, Roger?” you call him, and he turns around. You don’t know why you called him because you don’t even know what you want to say. Instead, you just smile, and he smiles in return before disappearing down the hall.
The two of you walked into the studio together. Jack was already there with Brian and they didn’t notice you come in, so you decided to take advantage of the last few seconds of privacy and pulled him down for a kiss. “Let me take you somewhere tonight,” he said, completely throwing you off guard. “Dinner. A movie. Something.”
Before you could answer, your boss, Kevin - the studio owner, walks in. “Oh good, you’re here,” he hollers, completely ignoring the fact that Roger was standing right there. “I need you down in San Diego. The idiots down there don’t know their asses from a hole in the ground.” He walked in his office and you looked at Roger, who was just as lost as you were. “Just for a couple of days. Shouldn’t be longer than that.”
“But, I don’t…”
“I know but you have to,” he tells you with his booming voice. “Here,” he says as he hands you a wad of cash. “For gas, food and a room.” He tosses you a car key. “Take the car. Don’t mess her up.” All you can do is stand there. “Here’s the address,” he hands you a slip of paper he just scribbled on. “Go home and get your things. It’s a 3 hour drive.” He walks in his office and slams the door.
You turn back to Roger, looking defeated. “Raincheck?” you ask.
“Of course,” he softly says with an equally soft smile. He takes the paper out of your hand and writes down his phone number. “Call me tonight so I know you’re safe.” He winks and kisses you one more time before walking back into the studio.
You finally get back to the dingy, cheap hotel room you rented for the night. You could have splurged for a nicer place, but this one is right across the street from where you need to be in the morning. You’re only here for a couple of nights anyway. It’s almost midnight – you lost track of time when you were at the bar next door having a good time with some of the locals. There was one in particular who caught your eye, and you really wanted to invite them back to your room, but you didn’t. You had a phone call to make anyway.
“This better be you, Y/N,” Roger answered, his voice raspy, sounding a mixture of sleepy and worry. “I’ve been worried fucking sick.”
“It’s me, Roger. I’m sorry. I didn’t realize what time it is.”
“Really?” He wasn’t happy. He was upset. Not angry, just… annoyed. “What were you doing? No one, I hope.”
You start to giggle. He’s upset, and you know he is, but you find his tone a bit endearing, and cute. “I was having some drinks. That’s all. I’m sorry,” you tell him, right before it dawned on you what he had just said. “And no, I wasn’t doing anyone, asshole.”
“Better not,” he chuckled deeply. “What are you doing now?”
“Nothing,” you say as your tone turns more relaxed, quieter. “Just got into bed.”
“All alone,” he said, his tone lowering, too. “Shame.” Just hearing his voice was soothing you. You didn’t realize how high strung you were today until he started talking in that soft, raspy voice. “Are you thinking about me?” he asks.
You giggle, with just a hint of embarrassment, because you absolutely were. “Yeah,” you whisper. “I am.”
“Thinking about my lips grazing yours, moving them down to your neck,” he whispers back. “My fingers running down your body…” He hears you. He hears your breathing get heavier and he smiles to himself. “I’m thinking about it too.”
“Oh yeah?” you ask once you clear your throat of that pocket of air that seemed to build up. You don’t know what else to say. He’s got you flustered.
“Close your eyes,” he whispers. “Spread your legs and touch yourself for me. Imagine those are my fingers running over your skin, down to that pretty little clit of yours.”
“You’re such a tease,” you breathlessly whisper, doing everything with your fingers he’s describing to you right now.
He chuckles. “If I was there I would be teasing you. Kissing every inch of you,” he stops and takes a deep breath. “Running my tongue all over you, tasting every single bit of you. Teasing your clit then sliding my fingers inside you.”
His breathing is starting to match yours. “Tell me what you’re doing right now,” you murmur. “Are you…”
He doesn’t give you the chance to finish asking. “Imaging your mouth wrapped around my cock.”
“My tongue licking around the tip, letting you feel the warmth of my mouth,” you whisper. “You like when I go slow, don’t you.”
“I’m so fucking hard right now, Y/N,” he gasps. “Wish I could be buried deep inside of you.”
You start biting your bottom lip, remembering exactly how he feels when he’s inside you. “I wish you were here right now so I could feel you…”
“So I could see your face when you cum for me,” he whispers. “I love watching you cum.”
“I love feeling you cum inside me,” you tell him, both of your breathing getting heavier and deeper.
He can barely talk anymore. “I think I’m going to cum just thinking about it,” he groans. You start moving your fingers faster and start to moan. “Fuck, babe. I love hearing you moan like that.”
“You gonna cum for me, Roger?” you ask. “Because I’m about to…” You couldn’t even finish your statement. Both of you climaxed at the same time, hearing each other in your ear through the phone receiver and you both start to giggle.
“I made a mess,” he laughed. “Wow.”
“Yeah,” you laugh. “Wow, indeed.”
“Still my naughty little minx,” he chuckles. “What are you doing to me?”
“Same thing you’re doing to me,” you tell him, your tone almost serious. The two of you sit there, quiet, listening to each other breathing over the phone. You close your eyes and lean your head back against the headboard.
“Get some sleep,” he tells you, breaking the silence. “Call me tomorrow.”
You can hear him smiling on the other end, and it brings a smile to your face. “I will,” you whisper. “I’ll make sure it’s not so late,” you giggle.
“Goodnight, Y/N,” he says before hanging up the phone.

Take all the credit for my work and tell the boss I’m a terrible employee, well it was because of me that you got fired!
I used to work in a marketing role in a government department. I was part time and worked along with a girl, who I’ll call Karen, who was working on a yearly contract. She’d been there for 2 years and was very friendly with the department manager and this was the reason her contract kept being renewed.
When my manager went on maternity Karen got temporarily promoted to the management role. This caused a lot of upset in the office as there were a number of more suitable and qualified people who didn’t get the chance to act up.
As soon as Karen became my manager everything changed. My work load increased and as I was part time I had to absolutely bust my ass to meet project deadlines. All of a sudden I wasn’t being included in staff briefs on new projects yet was expected to work on them. My department manager was acting really off with me too. This went on for months before I approached my department manager and asked to discuss my workload etc. She sat me down and basically told me that I really needed to get my act together as Karen was having to pick up my work load and it was affecting her output because I was, in Karen’s words ‘so lazy I should be fired’.
I told the manager what was going on and the actual work I was doing but she took Karen’s side, and said I was just assisting with some parts of projects and it was ridiculous of me to claim I was managing and completing so many projects on my own.
So I started making mistakes. Simple things, adding wrong briefs for designers, not including prices, adding incorrect budgets and deadlines that were 2 days out etc.
Karen started to get pulled by various managers asking why she was making so many mistakes then I knew for sure she was passing off my work as her own. She called me in for a meeting and exploded. I walked out.
She had began bitching about me to team mates saying how lazy I was etc. My friends began to tell me what was going on. One friend informed me that Karen was online for on average 5 hours a day planning her upcoming wedding in Spain and was using the office phones to make international calls to the wedding planners. He could see her screen and could t believe how lazy she was. So she was planning her wedding while I was busting my ass off.
So I decided to skip talking to the managers and went straight to HR. I told them to have IT monitor her internet usage and her out going calls. I said I could prove she was a lazy bitch and was relying on me. I was obviously able to show email trails and the project documents I had completed and she had then taken and saved down as her own.
2 weeks later Karen was called to HR and told her contract was not being renewed and she was given 1 months notice. She told everyone it was because of budget cuts.
My department heads brought me in for meetings to apologise and commend me on my excellent work and I got a promotion.
I left a couple of months later, if they’d believed me in the first place I wouldn’t have endured so many months of stress and anxiety.

Restricted Magic Arc 3 Part 6
I finally had a moment to write! Yay! This part is a little short, but I’m hopeful i can continue it later this weekend, enjoy!
Master post link to the rest of the parts.
It wasn’t a fight. It was a one sided beatdown.
Small hands struck his chest, pushing him to the floor. The boy was young, but he was smaller, and his five-year-old frame couldn’t hold up against the larger boy’s strength. He curled up in a ball, protecting his head and his stomach as the other child kicked him over and over. A group of children surrounded the fighting pair, but no one stepped forward to help him.
“Monster!” One girl shouted with a cruel grin.
“Leech!”
“They should have drowned you when you were born!”
He tried to hold on, but the boy lands a kick to his head, causing his ears to ring. Blood ran from a cut in his forehead to his eyes, dying his vision red.
Enough.
He reaches out, grabbing the ankle of his assailant. The boy, startled, tried to pull it back but it was already to late.
His hand was on him.
The larger boy crumpled to the ground, unconscious. The remainder of the children stepped back, startled as he ignored his injuries and stood up, smiling, the coppery taste of blood in his mouth.
“You were right.”
The other children were screaming, running away in the face of his power.
“I am a monster.”
He was all-alone. Sitting at the edge of the temple steps, he put his face in his hands, and sobbed bitterly.
“What’s wrong?” A young woman, sixteen or seventeen years old, sat next to him, a soft comforting hand on his back.
He briefly explained what happened, hesitating to tell her the extent to which he hurt the other children. When he had finished he looked up into her eyes, his face sad.
“Maybe I shouldn’t have been born. They say I’m a monster, and I think they’re right.” He rubbed his tears away with the back of his hand, but his eyes immediately filled up again.
The woman didn’t flinch.
“You are what you decide to be. If you decide to be a monster, then that’s all you’ll ever be. But you don’t have to be.” She gave him a quick hug. “You could be a hero if you wanted.”
He pouted. “Easy for you to say, you were chosen to help my father with the Renewal. He likes you.”
“That may be so, but he loves you, so I don’t think you have to worry.” She chuckled quietly as he rolled his eyes.
Looking out at the ground, where his blood and tears had soaked into the ground he sighed. “I hate my power. I wish I could be like you.”
“Everyone has a purpose. You don’t need mine, you already have your own.” The young woman shook her head. “Keep searching for it. And until then, if they come to bother you, try to make you cry, show them a smile instead, even if it’s a fake one.” Placing a finger under his small chin she smiled brightly. “Just like this. Let me see it.”
He smiled, and if it was a little strained, neither of them mentioned it.
“Good job Christopher, I knew you could do it! Now why don’t you come inside, I made some cake, my sister’s coming today!”
Christopher jumped up to his feet, excited. “Elsinore is coming?! That’s great!” He ran towards the temple, before pausing, a genuine smile lighting up his face. “Thanks, Sophia.”
Christopher woke up in a dark room, his face wet from tears.
Taking a moment to stabilize his breathing, he hid his face with his arm, giving out a quiet groan.
“What a worthless dream.”
He knew why those memories were suddenly bothering him again. The encounter with that boy in the woods. The one who was in love with Erin. It had been a miscalculation on Christopher’s part not to find out that there was someone who had catastrophic level Insight before coming in to contact with him.
Standing up, he looked in a mirror. He smiled lightly, the false expression naturally appearing on his face.
Years of lying, pretending. Of being used by others.
He wondered if this was what Sophia had envisioned when she told him to find his purpose.
Of course what did she know. For all her beautiful words she never even got to complete the Renewal. She ended up married to a general and murdered in a foreign country instead.
Now the only hope in the world rested on him bringing her daughter home.
The Christopher in the mirror looked frowned. For all that Erin looked like her mother, she was nothing like her. The easygoing temperament, the friendly atmosphere… none of it had been passed on to her daughter. She was cold, her eyes seeming to study him as if deciding whether or not to kill him. It made him uncomfortable. She didn’t remind him of Sophia, she was a lot more like her father.
But she was the only one who could save everyone.
If only it could have been him…
CRASH!
His fist smashed into the mirror, breaking the smiling image in front of him.
He was not anyone’s savior. He was a tool. A monster.
That was his purpose.
He would bring Erin back to Merion. Or he would die trying.
“Turn your papers over, students. The exam is over.”
A mixed chorus of cheers and groans met the teacher’s statement. Erin had already turned her paper over a while ago, and had been waiting quietly for the test time to be over. She gave a small grin as she stretched in her chair. Nothing in the exam had come as a surprise, and she felt that her position as top student in the theoretical portion wouldn’t be threatened in the near future.
A loud, pained groan broke Erin out of her thoughts. She looked over with an amused expression.
“Still alive, Gerald?”
The young man in question had his face down on the desk. “Barely.”
She patted him on the shoulder. “I’m sure you did fine.”
Gerald’s head snapped up, his face lighting up with enthusiasm. “Just remember your promise!” Erin winced. “Yes.”
Her unenthusiastic reply seemed to worry him. “You said if I passed, you would go to the yearly Formal with me!”
“Yes. IF you passed.”
Getting a more positive answer, Gerald pumped his fist and cheered. “Super romantic date time! Awesome!” He and Olivia high fived.
“You don’t have to be that excited.”
He shrugged. “Yes I do.”
Sighing, Erin looked over at Olivia. “And why are YOU so enthusiastic about this?”
“First of all, as a supportive best friend, I cheer on all your positive life experiences.” She grinned, “Besides, more importantly, if you go, I get to pick out your dress.”
“Who decided that?”
Her face had a rare look of stubbornness. “You never had a choice.”
Looking out the window, Erin buried her face in her hands and sighed.
At least she would only have to go if Gerald passed the exam.
“I passed the exam!”
Several days later, Erin was met with an ecstatic Gerald and Olivia. Faced with their overwhelming enthusiasm, she could only nod her head, and leave them to their planning
As the night of the ball came closer, the group prepared for their trip to Merion. The “classes” with Christopher continued, with very little success. Despite his best efforts, the only person who ever appeared to pay attention was Gerald. Frederick and Olivia continued with their artwork, making a full-fledged comic series of Erin murdering Christopher in various painful and increasingly gruesome ways. Matthias slept through each class, attacking instantly with ice magic any time someone was foolish enough to wake him up.
As for Erin…
It was difficult for anyone but her to know whether she was there or an illusion. Both ignored everyone, quietly reading during the lecture, and left without a word. The group as a whole had actually assumed she never attended these classes, but on the week before the Formal, Gerald showed up with a drawing to add to the comic.
“See this is me and Erin getting married, and here are all our babies!” Gerald grinned proudly, handing the paper to Frederick who studied it closely before smirking.
“Why do the kids look like Matthias?”
“WHAT? No they don’t!” Gerald tried to grab the paper back, but it was held out his reach by a laughing Frederick.”
“They’re pale with white hair…”
“It was drawn with black and white!”
“I think Erin’s cheating on you.”
“NOOO!”
WHOOSH.
The paper in Frederick’s hand burst into flames. Startled, the group turned towards Erin, who they had thought to be an illusion.
“That’s enough.” Her voice was quiet, but no one dared to contradict her.
“Yep.”
“Yes.”
“Sorry.”
“Guys!” Christopher broke in with a loud sigh. “You realize I was still in the middle of a lecture, right?”
Frederick turned to him with a confused expression. “Sorry, who were you again?”
Christopher then tried to talk to Erin, but she had already switched out with an illusion and escaped.
The day before the ball, Erin was walking to the forest to practice, mentally exhausted from all the last-minute fitting that Olivia had put her through. The girl was normally laid back and cheerful, but once it involved something she was passionate about, she was an absolute tyrant. Erin stretched, wincing as her stiff muscles protested the movement.
“ERIN! I was looking for you!” A young man with golden hair and eyes walked up, a friendly, casual grin on his face. Seeing Christopher approach. Erin ignored him, continuing on her way towards the forest.
“You can’t ignore me forever.” He trotted after her, slightly out of breath following the pace that she had set.
“…” Erin looked ahead, refusing to answer.
“Fine.” Christopher huffed with annoyance. “You listen, I’ll talk. I know you don’t agree with this engagement, but this goes much deeper than just you or me. It’s fine if you want to keep your own personal life.” He shrugged. “Love is a fantasy anyways. People use each other, and when they aren’t useful anymore they are cast aside. I don’t know what you and that boy think you have, but once you no longer need each other it will fade soon enough.”
“…”
“So don’t ruin engagement that has far-reaching political consequences just for a simple infatuation.”
“…”
Christopher threw up his hands. “Why are you so difficult?! Look, this may be difficult to believe, but the fate of everyone, the world, depends on this.”
Erin finally stopped, and turned to Christopher with a cold smile.
“’Fate of the world?’” She snorted derisively. “A convenient phrase that sounds great, but at the end of the day is used by people like you to get what you want.”
“I don’t expect you to understand…”
“I understand enough.”
“FINE!” He turned away. “We leave in a week. In Merion, people will be choosing sides. I suggest you choose the right one.”
Erin watched him walk away, the restriction amulet in her fist digging deeply into her skin.
It was the night of the ball. Erin stared at the mirror, feeling slightly uncomfortable.
“Are you sure…?” She trailed off at Olivia’s indignant expression.
“AM I SURE?!” She gestured at the reflection in the mirror, which showed a floor length dark red dress. “LOOK AT YOU! You look amazing! The cut is perfect, if I do say so myself.” She chuckled. “Gerald is going to freak out.”
“You look pretty good yourself.” Erin had to smile at the other girl’s enthusiasm.
Olivia held out her arms, twirling in a circle. “Do you like it?!” Her dress was wildly different from Erin’s, a light blue ball gown covered in lace.
“It’s perfect for you.”
“I know.”
The girls hugged each other briefly, and then parted as Erin glanced down at the amulet around her neck.
“Gerald is here.”
“Only Gerald would hand his fiancé a tracker that would let them find him at any time.” Olivia grabbed Erin’s arm, dragging her towards the door. “Let’s go!”
Erin dragged her feet a little, but allowed herself to be pulled out of the room.
It was time to go to a ball.

Wednesday, December 12th, Kat Buys a Farm.
As some of you know, we like to post our stories in a chronological order. Spring semester got busy for us and unfortunately, a story was delayed in being posted. Now that school is back in and school isn’t too crazy at the moment, I am trying to post stuff I’ve had written for a while, but wasn’t posted for sake of keeping things in order. The previous story was Kat’s story about my all girls birthday/slumber party. This story takes place a week and a half later just as our finals week was wrapping up. She or I might have mentioned in one of the stories from our Thanksgiving break about being out on the horses and running into their neighbors that own the farm on their northern property line.
For those interested, this update is about the Wednesday, December 12th and I’m writing while we were on Winter break, visiting Kat’s parents. Many stories, I write down lots of details while they are fresh in my mind and go back to flesh out the story when I have time. This is just in case you wonder why I talk in past tense some times during stories.
For those who don’t know, Kat’s parents own a huge horse farm. Kat and Rick are also listed as part owners and employees of the family company. During our Thanksgiving break, we were on the farm. One day we went out for a ride on a couple of the horses. We were riding along a trail to the northern edge of the property and we saw a couple on ATV’s near the fence line and we rode up to check things out. It was the couple who owns the farm to the north of the property and they were only out inspecting the property line because they were getting ready to sell. They hadn’t lived on the property for the last 2 years, opting for something closer to civilization. As I’ve said before. The Closest neighbor is 8 miles away, and the house is up a 2 miles long private drive. Their house is only about 3 or 4 miles north, but since the house was vacant, there were no neighbors within 8 miles. We talked to them for a few minutes and Kat was asking questions about their farm and their kids, she went to school with them and remembered them on the bus and how they used to come across the fence and swim in one of the lakes. She asked about the Stream/Creek on their property and they said it was still flowing nicely after all these years. She asked about the house, the house is in great shape for being vacant for a few years. Then Kat gave them her number and said she’d talk to her parents. They said great since they hadn’t officially put it on the market yet and would prefer a private sale to avoid a real estate agents fee which can get pretty high when dealing with farms. Kat asked permission to check it out the next day when we had more time and daylight. They said “Sure and that they wouldn’t be there but it would be fine. Then they passed Kat a spare key to the house. On the way back to the house, Kat talked about how beautiful their place was and how she used to go over to play with their little girl when she was younger. She told me it would be awesome to add that to the farm. Around this time last year, her parents bought the slightly larger farm on their western property line and now, there was a farm slightly smaller than their original farm on the northern property line, and Kat wanted to tell her parents about it, she wanted them to put in an offer to buy it. We got back to the farm that evening and Kat mentioned it to her father who told her that he knew the place, but wasn’t sure about buying it. He wanted her to give him good, solid reasons why they should buy it. Since Kat is taking some Business administration classes, she decided she’d come up with a quick “proposal” for the purchase. She went through all the costs and fees, yearly taxes, advantages to having the extra land. She even listed reason against, just to be fair and show her father that she was seriously thinking through on all the angles. Tuesday before Thanksgiving, she actually made an appointment with him to meet in his office, a quarter of a mile from the house, in the stable barn. She gave her little proposal, they talked it over and he said ok, but she found the place, she had to do it. This was her project and as part owner and employee, she had to do the work. He told her if she didn’t want to do it, it was ok, but that he would not take over and make the deal on his own, he explained he had many other things coming, one of which was an auction for several of the Dutch Warmblood show horses. (I think they have around 80-90 horses on the farm.) She was in a bit of a panic, this was a lot of money she’d be dealing with and could hurt the company a little if things went wrong. She asked if he would help her at all and he said he’d be there for her in an advisory capacity alone, nothing more. She told him she’d think about it and give him her answer the next day, he agreed and she came home to tell me about it. She decided she would talk to the owners to get an initial sale price and decided she would tell her Dad she’d do it. I explained set your limit, negotiate and if they will not settle, she doesn’t have to buy it and the farm will not lose any money. After Thanksgiving, She was on the phone and in Skype with them several times. She asked her parents on the “wiggle room” on the price and they gave her an absolute upper limit based on what they thought would be the absolute highest price they’d pay for it. After several phone calls and actually very little negotiation since they said Kats initial offer was reasonable, only about $15,000 lower than what they finally settled on. The night before, she was in a panic mode, telling me “Omg baby, what if I fuck this up?” I kept telling her she was doing great. She talked about how the most expensive things she has ever dealt with was her car. She bought a BMW X3, for school, with her parent’s money of course, but she bought it, She haggled, she made the deal, she did everything. This girl even negotiates prices at the flea markets and rummage sales we go to. She was in hyper mode all day the next day, then we got home at night from classes and she rushed around because we’re an hour behind in our time zone. She stripped off the clothes she wore to school, got dressed in kind of a business casual look sat down and opened her laptop and stared at the screen for a good 5 minutes before placing the call. I laid on the couch a few feet away behind the laptop, played around on Twitter, and half listened in and I was so proud of her. I heard them laughing at her jokes. I heard them tell her they were impressed with her offer and how she took the lead on this from her father. They talked about how they remember her, just 10 years ago, coming over to go play with their daughter, braided pigtails and all. Now here she was, buying their farm for her parents. I may have teared up a little hearing them talk about her. I was so proud of my little one. Just proud to be the one this amazing person wants to be with.
They went over a few more details and the she told them she’d get the contracts revised with the new prices and fee’s and a couple requirements dealing with structures on the property. Keep in mind, she did all this during review and finals week and still made the Dean’s list, and managed to ace her exams. I heard her say good bye, I heard the lap top close and I heard nothing else. I looked over the back of the couch and she was staring blankly at the wall and I could see tears in her eyes. I decided to give her a minute to calm down and she came bouncing over the couch on top of me, wiping her eyes and exclaiming “OMG baby! I just bought the farm! I’m 20 years old and I bought a fucking farm!” Her smile said it all and I started crying myself. I grabbed her and wrapped my arms around her neck and held her so close. My girlfriend just bought a farm and I was so proud of her and didn’t want to let her go right then, but it was already 10pm back home and she still had to call her parents and email the revisions to their attorney. I let her go so she could do her work and I got back to studying for I think my last final. I finished studying and while she was on the phone with Mom (hers), I played around on my phone.
When everything was done, we jumped in the shower where I began kissing every inch of her gorgeous body. I let my hands slide down her sides, caressing her butt and squeezing her cheeks, spreading them slightly, as I kissed my way down her chest, over her belly. I twirled my tongue around her belly button a few times as I renewed my grasp on her butt and spread her cheeks further, letting my middle fingers on each hand tease her perfect little butthole, I felt her force outward to open slightly as I let one slip in for a light finger fuck. I began kissing her mound, letting my tongue slip down to the top of her slit and teasing her hood as I swirled around, almost digging under to tease her clit. I finally settled on my knees and grabbed her ankle to raise her leg and let her rest it on my shoulder. She leaned against the back of the shower wall and I was able to slide my tongue back to her asshole. Teasing and tonguing it a bit before running my tongue up through her slit, tasting her juices and sucking on her clit. I let go of her leg and slid my hand down to my own wet little pussy and buried two fingers deep inside as I licked out my beautiful girlfriend. She grabbed the back of my head and began to grind up and down on my mouth, letting me know I was doing well. After another 30 seconds, I felt her legs begin to shake before her back slid down the shower wall, and she was sitting in front of me, shaking, and staring me in the eye as I continued fucking myself. She grabbed my hand and replaced it with her own as she got to her knees in front of me and began kissing my neck, my forehead, and then my lips as she continued fucking my wet little slit with her fingers. I rocked my hips back and forth on her hand. As she forced more in me, I tried hard to force myself further on her hand as I rocked back and forth. I leaned in, toward her, and gently bit her neck while I slowly bounced on her fingers.
She was doing everything perfect and I did not want things to ends for the night, but we had finals in the morning and needed sleep. We made out for another minute or so, got out and dried each other off, and jumped in bed. I rolled over, back into my big spoon and told her how very proud I am of her, not just for the purchase of the farm for her families company, but for doing it all, during end of semester review and during finals week. She shocked her dad by moving forward so fast. He even told her she had time to get finals, and even the holidays out of the way first, but as I well know, Kat goes after what she wants. She does not give someone else the chance to jump in and make the first move, or make a better offer. She sees something she wants and she takes steps to make it hers and I love her for it, more and more each day.
