Why do you not draw any shadows or highlights on Verik's body? I'm truly curious, I don't mean it as a critique! Is it part of his design?

It is part of his design! His body doesn't reflect light, so I always draw his body #000000 black without any shading. He does cast a shadow though! Think of it like those Mega Ultra Black pigments like vantablack or Black 3.0, which absorb like +98% of light (do not get me started on the drama around vantablack/Anish Kapoor)

It's a bit of a challenge to depict his details and shape without any shading. Everything is shown through white outlines, if at all

All that being said, I have no problem with other people drawing him with depth and shading! It's cool to see him that way and it's amazing to see someone like my characters enough to draw their own interpretation

Believes in and adores magic with a grublike sense of wonder, but totally lies about it to his friends. He’s bad at that, though, so he just tries not to talk about magic at all.

He really needs braces, but he refuses to wear them. On Beforus, they’re available for the culled (which he isn’t), but on Alternia, they’re only reserved for highbloods (purple and above).

It’s ambiguous if he knew the specific death circumstances that would save himself and the other Alpha trolls from the Scratch, but he sure had fun killing some of his companions. Aranea realized the Scratch loophole in the middle of what he was doing and killed everyone else (admittedly, Eridan only killed, like, three of them).

He’s working for [LE] out of bitterness and a desire to end it all (hence apocalypseApathy), but it has helped him relearn that believing in magic isn’t something of which he should be ashamed.

He uses the ouija fetch modus because it saves him the trouble of thinking about what to retrieve. This is partially because of apathy and partially because it gives him a splitting headache.

He’s a Thief of Time because he ends up giving [LE] access to his time powers (i.e. stealing his teammates’ access to them) for his own selfish reasons.

His left-hand lens fell out once, hence the pseudo-eyepatch.

Can I just say the blue image is really really pretty? Anyways, I'm prefacing with that before I say something potentially profoundly stupid.

I think it's worth noting that art styles can make depicting some things easier or harder. Like, the way I approach coloring makes it way easier to draw darker skin than lighter skin (I have a strong preference towards saturated colors and it took me a while to realize that orange is a skin color, so I just, for the life of me, couldn't draw white ppl despite being white lmao).

Like, in these two images, the one on the left took me a longer time to figure out the skin tones than the one on the right. I will say that the one on the left is supposed to look unhealthy.

And I definitely have a comfort zone when it comes to body sizes. This is the most recent thing I've worked on with human proportions.

I think with pixel art, it can be actively difficult to draw skinny ppl. The lower pixel count you get, the harder body shape diversity becomes.

Which is definitely a self imposed technical limitation and not an art style thing and it isn't widely applicable. I'm deviating from my point.

I think I just have a range of what sizes I'm comfortable drawing ppl in. Like going too skinny is hard (super skinny ppl look creepy, this is directed at anime character designs specifically). And I don't think I've tried super plus sized. I hate drawing folds of cloth. Not saying that as an excuse, just a stray thought.

I don't really draw human characters 95% of the time, so that's definitely part of the noticeable range in body types depicted when I do draw ppl.

Though, again, this is probably a result of me rarely choosing to draw ppl and me preferring a medium that limits your options (i really like drawing super low pixel art).

But yeah, I think my typical drawings tend to be stuff like this.

Where my conceptualization of stuff related to body diversity and proportions tends to revolve around concepts that make for good monster designs and how to make efficient usage of space. And when that comes to drawing ppl, I like chonk because chonk is very good when drawing 8 bit monsters. Like, I think it's easier to pull personality out of a big body than a skinny body, but that's very heavily tied to my approach to drawing shit.

I'm sure I'll get better with human proportions over time, but I thought it would be fun looking at my art process.

Buf related to the potentially very bad take, I sort of half believe ppl when they're like "well my art style stops me from drawing X ppl." Since, like, the way you (ambiguous) approach drawing definitely can incline you to draw certain body shapes. There's no hard barrier. Like, the closest thing I can think of are the 16x16 pixel GBC Sprites (your pallet also has to be 000000 and two other colors), where it was almost impossible to distinguish a 4ft character from a 6ft character in visible height. But that's such an extreme and specific case. So, I guess what I'm getting at is that I totally believe that certain art styles can make it harder to learn how to draw something, and if 99% of your art isn't going to involve it, I can totally see no going out of your way to learn, especially if you just draw for fun. But you're certainly not barred from it. So, I think answering "why don't you draw fat ppl" with "haven't needed to" is fine. At least, from the context of artistry. I'm not really here to say anything about whether that's fair to fat ppl or not.

Tutorial: using Curves to white balance a gif

 What does it mean to white balance an image?

Basically (I’m skipping most of the technical stuff so we can get to gif making sooner) to white balance a photo means to set it to neutral. The pixels that should be white will appear so, and the pixels that should be black will be black. (Here’s an explanation on the Adobe website)

What does that have to do to gif making?

When you see a TV show or a movie or whatever, they’re usually color graded in some way (there’s a good run down of it here). A prime example of this would be the Yi City arc in The Untamed/CQL, where there’s a very blue, somber color cast to everything. Obviously this was intentional, and suited that particular arc perfectly. For gif makers, scenes that are dark and washed out like that can be a challenge, but Curves is here to help! Curves is a lovely little adjustment layer that can actually do a lot of heavy lifting.

Here’s some examples of what a gif looks like before and after white balancing with Curves. It really helps brings the colors into a more “workable” range and establish a good starting point for other color adjustments.

Okay that’s enough of Wangxian and their good looks, let’s get on to the tutorial.

The process:

(Note: this is in RGB color mode) 

Curves has a number of buttons and other things contained within it, but today we’re just going to focus on the eyedroppers:

Using each of these tells Photoshop “this is where the image should be white (#FFFFFF), black (000000), and 50% grey (808080).” Photoshop then takes that information and makes changes to the RGB channels in Curves accordingly. You can eyeball this and pick whatever pixel you want to set as the white/grey/black points, but Curves has a nifty way built in to help you find the white and black points.

Finding the black and white points:

If you hold down alt and move the black slider little by little to the right, the image will turn white and you should see black pixels gradually appear. These are the darkest pixels in the image, and are probably where you should set the black point.

You can do the same with the white slider (hold down alt and move it to the left little by little), and it’ll show you where the brightest pixels in the image are. 

Now that you know which pixels are closest to white and black, you can use the eyedroppers to set the white and black points. Here’s what it looks like with those both set:

Finding the grey point:

So finding the grey point is a little bit trickier, since there’s no slider for it in Curves (afaik anyways). I’ve created a Photoshop action (you can download it here) that speeds up the process. Here’s what the action does:

Creates a layer and fills it with 50% grey

Sets the grey layer to Difference blending mode

Creates a new Threshold adjustment layer

Groups the two layers together

This group of layers essentially works in the same way that slider trick did, except it’s for grey pixels. If you don’t see any pixels on screen, don’t worry. Increase the value in Threshold by 1 until you see pixels pop up. Those are the pixels that are 50% grey (or closest to it). You can mark these with the Count tool (or if you’re low tech like me, just hold a finger over the spot lol) and come back with the grey point eyedropper to sample it (turn off the layer group visibility first).

Now that we’ve got each of those points identified, we can white balance the gif (you can delete the grey balance group now that it’s not needed). Here’s how I set mine + what the Curves layer looks like:

Using the eyedroppers will make changes to the RGB channels. You can resample or adjust these individually by hand if the result isn’t quite to your liking. I also like to adjust the tone curve to create more contrast:

Curves is a great starting point for making color adjustments. I’ll often add a vibrance layer and call it a day:

But really, you can add additional adjustment layers to your heart’s content. Hope this helped! Happy gif making!

Shadowverse Flame: la serie animata andrà in onda dal 2 aprile

L’anime ispirato al gioco di carte collezionabili di Cygames tornerà in tv con le vicende di tre nuovi protagonisti.

Il canale ufficiale dell’anime di “Shadowverse”, ha diffuso un primo video promozionale per “Shadowverse Flame”, la prossima serie animata del franchise, ispirata al popolare gioco di carte collezionabili targato Cygames, che verrà trasmessa in Giappone a partire dal 2 aprile.

La storia seguirà dei protagonisti diversi da quelli della precedente serie di 48 episodi (più uno speciale), andata in onda fra aprile 2020 e marzo 2021, che potete trovare in streaming su Crunchyroll, sottotitolata in italiano.

Want to look like a camp oven cooking expert in front of your friends on your next camping trip? Master the art of camp oven cooking and you’ll certainly be invited back next time. The beautiful flavours and textures you get from cooking with a cast iron camp oven are like no other, and even the simplest meals come alive after the camp oven treatment.

Don’t expect to master it on your first go though. Gauging the temperature required in relation to a number of coals can be tricky at first. But follow these basic tips and you’re halfway there.

Snowys stocks a huge range of camp ovens and

Preheat the camp oven on or in the main fire prior to cooking, because if you place a cold camp oven on your cooking coals you’ll lose half your heat by heating up the camp oven. A tripod is ideal for this task, or sit the oven on top of a barbie plate in the flames if possible. Don’t forget to heat the lid too!

When you’re ready to cook, you need to prepare a bed of coals away from the main fire to place the camp oven on.

If possible, scrape or dig out a small hole the size of your oven to line with hot coals. This is not essential but can be handy especially if it’s windy.

Of course, by all means, leave the camp oven on your tripod above the flames, but cooking on coals is recommended for baking and roasting.

Bear in mind that different types of wood will burn hotter than others, so even though you should try to minimise the number of times you remove the lid (as you will lose heat each time), it is important to check every now and then to make sure it’s not burning.

As a general guide, check on dampers after 20 minutes and roasts after 30 minutes.

Roasting

Place a well-oiled preheated oven on hot coals and add the meat. Cook the meat for 1.5-2.5 hours depending on the size of the meat. Vegetables like potatoes, onions, pumpkin should be added to the oven for the final 45 minutes of cooking. Throughout the cooking process, check the temperature of the oven every 30 minutes or so. Add more hot coals if required.

Stewing

The longer the cooking time for stews the more tender the meat will become. Cook over a slow to moderate oven for 1-3 hours or longer as required.

Baking

When cooking cakes and slices in trays and cake tins, it is best to put a trivet in the bottom of the camp oven. This allows air to flow around inside the camp oven and provide even cooking.

Cooking time: 30-40 mins

Ingredients: 3 cups self-raising flour, 1 cup of milk or water, pinch of salt

Variations: For a savoury damper add onion, bacon and grated cheese. For a sweet treat add honey, jam, or chocolate chips.

Method: Mix ingredients together until a dough is formed. Shape dough and dust lightly with flour. Place dough into a greased camp oven and cover. Cook in a medium temperature camp oven until golden brown. Damper is cooked when a skewer comes out clean.

The year is ,1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson is  running for reelection against George Wallace in the Democratic primary. Coincidentally, this Presidential Election is taking place during the height of the Civil Rights Movement.:Medgar Evans was gunned down outside is home in June 1963; the four black girls were killed in the Bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church; and protests and riots coursed throughout the streets of cities across America.  Deemed controversial by his contemporaries and vilified by the government, this didn't deter Malcom  from delivering his now infamous  “The Ballot or The Bullet” speech o n April 3, 1964,  in Cleveland,OH, which he delivered one other time on April 12, 1964 in Detroit,MI.  Although, it has come to be known  as “The Ballot or the Bullet” for political correctness, Malcolm X originally entitled his speech."The Negro Revolt, and Where Do We Go From Here?" or What Next?"  It's got to be The Ballot or The Bullet....... “This is why I say it's the ballot or the bullet. It's liberty or it's death. It's freedom for everybody or freedom for nobody.” -Malcolm X Fast-forward to August 2020, and it is uncannily eerie how the words of “The Ballot or The Bullet” speech seem to  have been written to capture the  spirit of the Black Community today.  His words resonate perhaps even louder today than when Malcolm X first  delivered them over 56 years ago because has come  to respected and revered  by the Black Community.  During his speech, Malcolm X said:  “Why does it look like it might be the year of the ballot or the bullet? Because Negroes have listened to the trickery and the lies and the false promises of the white man now for too long, and they're fed up. They've become disenchanted. They've become disillusioned. They've become dissatisfied. And all of this has built up frustrations in the black community that makes the black community throughout America today more explosive than all of the atomic bombs the Russians can ever invent. Whenever you got a racial powder keg sitting in your lap, you're in more trouble than if you had an atomic powder keg sitting in your lap. When a racial powder keg goes off, it doesn't care who it knocks out the way. Understand this, it's dangerous.” On May 25, 2020, the release of the video of George Floyd  being murdered by  former Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, as he held his knee on his neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds,  unwittingly became the catalyst for the ignition of the 2020  “racial powder keg.”  George Floyd’s death, coupled with the deaths of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and Elijah McClain have ignited  and mobilized the Black Community in manner unparalleled to any  civil uprising in recent American history. Ironically, these events are culminating during a Presidential Election year similarly to that of the 1964 election and Civil Rights Movement, when this speech was first penned and  delivered.  This is once again , the year of The Ballot or The Bullet in America, which is self-explanatory.  We can not let  all or our protest be in vain no more than we can afford to let our vote be wasted on those that would dare to silence us. Over, the course of the 11 weeks leading up to Election Day, this page will serve as a platform to provide a history of the Black vote in America, as well as, pertinent information regarding the upcoming election.  It is my deepest desire to honor Malcolm's memory by doing my part to make manifest  his rallying call to to reeducate the Black Community politically in an effort to : “..open our people's eyes, make us become more politically conscious, politically mature. Sam: "Shit..no no no!" he shouted as he watched all his work disappear as the computer in front of him froze. "Piece of shit fucking crap.." he muttered, defeated as he rebooted, the awful sinking feeling that he hadn't saved his work pervading his body. Hadn't he learned his lesson, with the damn sketchy machines in the college library? Bad enough for it to have happened on campus, but now on his own computer at home? Fucking joke.He glanced at his watch, shaking his head as he realized he wouldn't be able to complete his assignment before Sammie's performance in the Christmas Pageant. There was no way Figgins would give him any slack either. He had to give it in before 10pm or he was screwed. Pulling out his cell, he called Mercedes. "Hey..I can't make it Cedes..The computer crashed on me and I didn't save the assignment.."

Mercedes say shaking her leg nervously as she looked towards the entrance to the auditorium once again. He was late. Samara has been so excited to be the lead elf in the play. Mercedes and Sam both took turns helping her memorize her lines till she was practically saying them in her sleep. The lights began to dim and she checked her phone for time seeing it was two minutes till start. “Come on Sam,” she said worriedly to herself. “Where are you babe?” Just as she went to text him she saw a message flash on her screen. He wasn’t coming. She knew he had to be crushed not to come seeing that he was just as excited as Sammie was. ‘I’m so sorry Sam, focus on your assignment it will be fine.’ She sent her reply and removed her purse from the seat next to her that she no longer needed to save.

Sam: This was shit..his whole life was going to shit..Sammie had been so looking forward to both of them coming to see her in her play. And he had wanted to, so badly as much to say a fuck you to all the other parents who cast censorious looks at him and Mercedes just because they were young parents, as to see his baby girl perform on stage. He hated the thought of Mercedes having to sit there alone, enduring the whispers. Kitty, had made things worse by regaling the parents at the school, with all the sordid details of how exactly they'd ended up together even though she had herself trapped Mike, first year of college, by getting pregnant deliberately. He’d promised her, promised his baby girl faithfully, he’d be there and he was having to break that. "Fuck my life.." he muttered, as he painstakingly began typing out the assignment again.

Mercedes tried to remain calm throughout the pageant when she noticed the not so subtle glances in her direction. This was beginning to be a normal event whenever she would go to places or events with Sam and their daughter. She wished so much she could just yell, “yeah I had a kid young and I’m married to the guy you bimbos gawk at” but for her child’s sake she kept quiet. Her anxiety wasn’t as bad when Sam was there because he always tried his best to keep her calm and unbothered. Kitty was the worst of them all, the ring leader. Mercedes knew it was all because of her jealousy. She wanted Sam and a single one night stand between Mercedes and Sam halted all that. She smiled widely as Sammie took the stage so adorable in her little costume and began to say the closing words of the play. She hadn’t missed a single line. She was super proud of her and bias or not the star of the show. The whole room including Mercedes stood and began to clap loudly as the curtains closed and the light came back up. When the little tikes came out for the curtain call she made sure to snap a photo of Sammie and sent it to Sam as she waited for her daughter to come from the back.

Sam: He smiled sadly as he saw the photo of his daughter come through. She looked amazing and he could see the excitement shining in her eyes, and felt just like an absolute heel for not making it there for her big moment. No one had ever told him it would be this hard..Knowing that this was the way forward to being able to support his family and give them everything they deserved, but in turn having to sacrifice precious moments like these..He was tired, it just kept getting harder, and knowing that this wasn't the life Mercedes would've chosen just seemed to make everything worse. How could you love someone so much and not connect with them? He felt her pulling away every time they were together, she was so reserved, so careful to make any demands on his time that he wanted to shake her at times. But then again, he knew that he didn't have the right to ask anything from her. He'd gotten her pregnant, and now she was trapped. Sighing, he began reading over the assignment, making minor corrections as he went.

Mercedes laughed at how giddy Sammie was the whole car ride home. She kept going on and on about how’s my complements she got from her friends and even the teachers. She was a little sad when asked where her daddy was and Mercedes had to explain that he needed to finish an important homework or he wouldn’t get a gold star. Sammie seemed to be okay with for now but Mercedes knew there would follow up questions later on. “What do you say we take Daddy some food home to help him?” She asked and the little girl nodded her head with a toothy smile. She reminded her so much of Sam that sometimes she had to just take it all in. This may not have been the ideal life for her but she loved her little family. She often wondered if Sam felt the same way. He was pulled into this marriage like she was and maybe he was just playing along to please their folks. She made a quick stop grabbing some food and headed home. Once inside Sammie ran straight to where she knew Sam would be. “Daddy!!!” She yelled running into his arms. He looked so tired and worn out. She giggled at the pen sticking out his mouth, hair disheveled. “I figured you were hungry,” she greeted him. She took a chance sitting in his lap and placing the food down next to him. Feeling even braver she placed a chaste kiss to his lips and raked his hair fixing it. “Any progress?”

Sam: He heard the sound of Sammie's little feet running into the apartment, smiling as he realized his livewire daughter and his wife were back. He hugged Sammie tight as she launched herself into his arms and ruffled her hair lightly. "Hey Sparkie, how was your show? I'm so sorry I couldn't make it.." he said sadly as a wave of guilt washed over him again. "S'ok Daddy! Mommy vid-i-ohd it for you! It was awesome!" she exclaimed before flinging herself around the room renacting her starring moment. His arms closed around Mercedes the instant she sat down on his lap, face nuzzling her neck, breathing in her scent. Times like these were rare, times when they actually touched like any normal married couple would, instead of the awkwardness that always seemed to linger at the edges of any interaction they had..except in bed. There, they connected fully on an almost ephemeral level-it was just this day to day stuff they seemed to have trouble navigating. His eyes darkened as she pressed a kiss to his lips and his tongue automatically, swiped her bottom lip gently. If Sammie hadn't have been there, he'd have had her up against the wall, screaming his name no matter how tired or stressed he was. "Thanks, Cedes.." he said nodding at the food. "It's done.." he said looking away, frustrated. "I missed her show..I'm such a shitty father.."

Mercedes felt sorry for Sam. She could tell he was beating himself up for not making it to her show and she wanted him to know she completely understood. He did so much for them. He worked and tackled school so she didn’t have to work while she took care of Sammie. She was grateful for everything that he had done for them and even if he only did it out obligation she would show her appreciation. “Hey, don’t say that.” She rubbed a soothing hand down his back. “You did what you had to do and there is nothing wrong with that. You’re an amazing father Sam. Did you see how happy she was to see you? She thinks the world of you, and so do I.” She realized what she said before the words could be stopped from coming out. He did mean the world to her tho, even if they had a funny way of showing affection of any form in their day to day life unless it came to sex. This moment was actually a rare occasion for them but she was going to enjoy it for what it was. “Here,” she pulled her phone out going to her videos. “She was the star Sam, I could be bias but those others kids had nothing on her.” She pressed play one arm wrapped around his shoulder as the other held her phone.

Sam:”I think the world of you too, Cedes, you know that right? I couldn’t do this without you..” It was as close as he’d ever come to telling her he loved her. He grinned as she held her phone up and Sammie came on screen. “Nah, you’re not biased baby. She lights up the stage,” he agreed wholeheartedly with her assessment adding mentally, the way you light up my whole life..
