I’m willing to suspend my disbelief for the sake of an AU but when it comes to canon, you gotta draw a line somewhere, right?

Just because they aren’t the perfect parents- just because their upbringing has led them to make mistakes (some serious, others not)- does not mean they’re not good parents.

Definitely not great parents. But they’re good.

Good enough to choose to raise four lovable, silly, brave individuals despite every reason not to.

I’ve seen people be very vocal about their regret of raising one or two average kids because of how difficult it was. Those are the kind parents who are probably lacking love in some areas.

2012&RISE RAISED FOUR AND HAVE ZERO REGRETS.

And they’re very vocal about their lack of regrets.

Even though they’re not award-winning parents, their kids know that they’re loved unconditionally. And that’s the best thing you can instill in your child as a parent. No matter what, someone loves you.

I don’t know how on earth the fandom sees that in one Splinter and misses the same thing entirely in the other.

no but ur onto something. i think its just that usually the focus when it comes to violence is on how splinter molded their relationship with it. discipline, having a good reason to be violent etc etc. what they'd worry splinter would think of how they use violence. though im sure someone somewhere has done an exploration of it, idk.

like there's still slapstick but its not very serious idk. me personally im very avoidant of anything to do with violence, even like, friendly grappling or whatever. due to the things what happened near me growing up and the Way my Body is.

TMNT 2012 Headcannons Because I Can't Function Well Enough to Make a Fic

yeah I'm sorry for not being able to write super well rn,,, but I'll make headcannons to make up for it!

TMNT 2012 HCS! (Slight spoilers! Don't read if you haven't finished season 4!)

Lee:

I feel like he's decently ticklish but hides it most of the time because of his "I want to look super professional and ninja-y" persona, but there are times when he can't help it.

Worst spot is probably his sides (I've seen this around and it just suits him)

Second worst is likely tied between his feet and underarms

After the battle with Shredder and his vocal cords were trashed, his laugh is much more raspy and doesn't get very loud. Shrieky giggles at most.

Hasn't effected his sensitivity though.

Will squirm like his life depends on it, but generally is sapped of his strength after a few seconds.

Splinter would tickle them as tots, but as they got older it became less and less common.

However, when Leo became more edgy and stoic, his dad came around to make sure he kept smiling.

Gets tickled the most by Splinter and Raph

If asked, won't downright admit to being ticklish, but definitely won't deny it if it's with someone he's comfortable with.

Karai had to do some serious coaxing to get him to let her, but after that she continuously pokes at him to catch him off guard, sometimes even full on tickling him until he can't remember his own name.

All ideas for attack and protection go out the window as soon as he's tickled

Just flops around a bunch

Can't take multiple lers at a time unless it's light tickling- he almost instantly crumbles

Gets really flustered hearing "the t-word"

He'll blush and stutter, looking all taken-aback

If Leo's in a good mood, he'll take any and every opportunity he can to wreck his siblings

Tickles all of his brothers equally, but it's really just a matter of who needs it the most, as well as who happens to fall into his sight.

Likes using cheer-up tickles- and needs to. (These poor children are so traumatized)

Tickles vary between scribbling and poking, to squeezing and wiggling his fingers.

Isn't suuuper ruthless, but his brothers still fear him.

Especially if they've made him mad.

If so, it's game over.

Is also very teasy.

Will avoid saying the word because it flusters him as well, but still makes sure to embarrass his little siblings to no end.

I feel like he'd laugh along with his lee, making notes on the silly faces and noises they make.

The most common reason of being forced to take his wrath is refusing to move from in front of the tv while he watches Space Heroes.

Likely a ler-leaning switch

Donnie

Lee:

Donatello looks like he's super ticklish.

And absolutely is.

Worst spots are underarms, thighs, and general stomach-area, but he's definitely ticklish everywhere

Screeches and flails when tickled no matter how light

Laugh is pretty loud, but his giggles are very light and airy.

Will beg the entire time, but doesn't actually mind being tickled all that much.

There was a time when April found out he was ticklish (she walked in on Mikey wrecking his shit) and joined in.

Let's just say his face had never been as red as it was then.

Is tickled the most for not sleeping for literal days straight, or for freaking out, but there are times when his brothers (+ April and sometimes Casey) just tickle him to mess with him.

If multiple people are tickling him, he just completely loses himself.

Don isn't able to formulate words, his face goes beet red, and will go limp after a while.

If April is tickling him, he is so terrified of accidentally hurting her that he just stops moving- complete bodily shut down.

He still laughs and pleads with her, but refuses to move an inch, barely even pulling him arms down to protect himself. He gets teased about it so much too.

That completely flips if it's his brothers though, slapping and punching and kicking so much that it's the main priority to pin him down, rather than actually tickle him.

Actually cries very easily when being tickled

Gave his fam a big scare the first time it happened

Cannot take teasing.

He will hide in his shell until he either feels safe again or is forced out.

Such forcing is done by giving him raspberries on his shell. (The method was discovered by Mikey, and was passed down to everyone they know)

Ler

I don't see him as much of a ler, but let's give it a shot anyways.

Isn't very teasy per se, but there are lots of little things he does that fluster his lee regardless.

Things like creeping his hands close to a tickle spot before actually getting it, pausing every once in a while, things like that.

Doesn't really say much, and kinda just stares at whoever he's tickling. Especially April.

After everyone started noticing this, he switched to giving compliments sometimes so it was less awkward.

Tickles Mikey and April the most, but it's still pretty rare.

Has pretty light tickles

Spidering, soft scratching, and tracing are his go to.

Has only tickled April a couple of times, but it didn't go on for very long because 1) He got too shy, 2) He didn't want to hurt her, and 3) She turns the tables every time.

In all the times he's tickled people, there was only a time or two that they didn't get him back.

Almost completely a lee.

Raph

Lee:

I'm not sure where his worst spot would be, but for sure has a really ticklish torso and neck. Also Underarms.

I love that he's canonically ticklish- it's just so wonderful.

Gets tickled the most by Mikey (much to his embarrassment), but Leo is a close second, followed by Mona.

His laugh is surprisingly high-pitched, making a prime topic for lighthearted bullying.

Attempts to hide his reactions, and does so fairly well, although there are certain things that absolutely make him crumble.

Fights and fights and fights until he's too tired to move.

Absolutely will not hesitate to knock a tooth loose or beat anyone who tries to tickle him, but there are two instances where he will restrain himself.

One of these instances is when it comes to Mona Lisa.

If she is tickling him, he'll wiggle around, but composes himself enough to not accidentally hurt her.

Both of them know there's no way he'd actually do any substantial damage, but better safe than sorry.

The other instance is if he really pisses Leo off.

This has only happened a couple of times, but it is extremely scary.

Raph pretty much accepts his fate.

There's still a struggle, but there is a significant decrease in the amount of effort he puts in to stop his older brother from tickling him.

Still stubborn af though.

Mikey was the one who found out he was ticklish and has been using it against him ever since, almost always resulting in Raph absolutely getting him.

Ler:

Despite the ler energy I've seen him with, I feel like he doesn't tickle people a whole lot.

Doesn't mean he isn't the scariest ler in the Hamato household.

When the tickle monster that is Raph is unleashed, all of his brothers cower.

Has a much rougher approach to tickling, leaving his lee a breathless mess on the floor

He's also extremely teasy, though it's more so sarcastic comments the entire time.

Running from this turtle is not an option. He can and will catch you every single time.

Donnie has learned this the hard way, very many times.

There's a pretty even balance as to who Raph tickles the most, but the most common to see tickly-interactions with is Casey.

Those two have tickle fights all the time.

Leo has rushed into the lair multiple times because of Casey's unholy screeching.

Tickles people the most for getting on his nerves or to get them to be quiet. (Mikey)

Has tried and failed to tickle Mona, and is still unsure to this day if she isn't ticklish, or just hides her reactions well.

His laugh is loud enough to make his ler retract and cover their ears for a moment before continuing.

I think he absolutely loves using tickling as a way to mess with his bros or just have fun.

Is mainly tickled for being obnoxious, but April and Casey will get him more casually, exchanging pokes and squeezes every now and then.

That said, his main lers are April and Casey, followed by Raph.

Squirms around a bit, and tries to hide in his shell half of the time.

Isn't as stubborn as his brothers, but he has his moments.

Is more sensitive to physical teasing, such as wiggling fingers, etc.

Needs some kind of affection after being tickled, such as a hug, head-pats, even just some water will do.

If caught off-gaurd, he may accidentally punch his ler in the face. (It has happened on multiple occasions)

Is generally open to being tickled, but will get a little flustered if asked about it directly.

Ler:

Pesters his brothers All. The. Time.

Loves to sneak up behind them when they're not paying attention and poke them or wiggle his fingers into their side.

Is the only one of the four to incorporate tickling into every day life.

Seriously, he'll sneak it into training to gain the upper hand, (it never works for long but A for effort) cheer-up tickles after a tough mission, even declares tickle fights sometimes!

A very quick tickler, rapidly changing spots and moving his fingers at terrifying speeds.

Gets extremely full of himself when he takes someone down, teasing and laughing galore, though this is usually his downfall.

Tickles Raph and Donnie the most often, Raph just to annoy him, and Donnie to initiate a tickle fight, or to make him relax.

Casey is slightly rarer to see, but that's because he mostly hangs around Raph and Donnie.

Loves playing chase before getting his lee.

Also will tag-team with April to get his nerd brother, secretly being a wingman to up his ego in April's eyes.

Makes goofy noises when tickling people to make them laugh more, and it works a lot of the time.

The humans!!

These are mainly based on 2012, with mixed elements of the rottmnt!

Here's the list of them from oldest to youngest, I with a short description of their personalities

🍕

- Donnie / 14 / He/it / The Leader not by choice

- Mad scientist, all the way, not in an evil way, but in a silly Frankenstein way. Sort of forgets it has siblings due to how obsessed he gets with things, means well though, he makes them things as a way of affection. It's the oldest child, but a bad influence. Raph is the only one who keeps the gang alive whenever Donnie tries to lead anything. Donnie never wanted to be a leader, but it was Just because it was the oldest.

- Raph / 13 / He/him / The medic

- He's sort of like that grumpy dad that says he doesn't want a dog, but like two days later he spoils that dog and carries it like a baby. Raph puts himself in a bit of a care giving role, still mostly serious, but it slips through when worried about his brothers or really excited about something. His relationship with Mikey is not like 2012, where it's bickering and annoyance, it's more like "what are you doing on the fridge mikey get down-". He wants to be the leader, since he thinks it would make his brothers listen to him more, but he's been reluctant to ask for it since he's not sure if he'd be an actual good leader on missions and such.

- Leo / 12 / He/they / the entertainment

- Basically if rottmnt Leo gave way less of a shit about literally anything. If the world was burning, Leo would want to look amazing while laying in a hammock sipping a sprite. He literally only does anything for the sake of their brothers. Kinda goes all out on the bedazzle, has the most knowledgeable about humans and the one who April met first. Leo is obsessed with music and wants to become a famous singer, but the whole mutant thing makes it difficult. They had thought about it a lot though. ALOT. Also a FNAF lore kid. He's somehow exhausted and hyper at the same time, they couldn't explain to you how that works.

Mikey / 11 / Any / The

- the littlest prick you'll ever meet (But it's cute so it's okay/j). The most excited about Ninja related stuff and the most excited about missions splinter sends them on. Tries really hard for splinter to think he's good enough. (Even though splinter is already incredibly proud of all of his sons). He's rejection sensitive and hasn't told anyone about it yet. Mikey is really good at acrobatics and uses it a lot when fighting. It's sort of like a special interest almost. Met Casey first when he was delivering pizza.

I will probably re work their designs slightly as I continue to draw them,

but these are the scrapped concepts I had for Donnie and Mikey if you wanted to know (Donnie went too much "Miku the world is mine" and Mikey went the sonic character cartoons route)

How I think rise and 2012 would get along:

- Rise!Raph would defiantly be so defensive of 2012!Mikey, always making people apologise for being mean to him and giving him an actual chance to speak

- BUT! He would also be willing to try explain to the others where their faults are with the help of Dr Feelings

- Rise!Leo would be OBSESSED annoying the hell out of 2012!Raph, teasing yet also he would help build up his confidence? I feel like he could recognise Raph’s insecurity

- I think rise!donnie would like 2012!Loe ya first because he’s more serious and quiet but then end up missing his twins noise too much

- alternatively, I think he would also be the second (mikey being first) to realise that 2012!Leo is just putting up a front and is just as silly and goofy as his brothers

- 2012!Donnie would feel so small compared to his counter part, and Rise!Donnie wouldn’t pick up that his excited rambling on his ache im eyes was making the other upset, until Rise!Leo explains it in a kind way to BOTH of them

- cue Rise!Donnie explains to 2012!Donnie that he’s so confident because he knows his brothers trust him and that, being totally serious, if he has the power to create a fully working robot from scrap, he can do literally anything. (After a while he also explains that he too feels small, but when compared to the mighty power of magic)

- Rise!Mikey is going insane, they’re all so emotionally constipated and he’s getting a migraine from switching between Dr Delicate Touch and Dr Feelings

- Rise!April is so worried for her country part “are you eating enough?” “Can you really fight with just a fan?” “You dad WHAT?!”

- 2012!April feels like she just gained a big sister, even if she rather politely tells her not to speak about her crush on Donnie

- I also see rise!Raph helping 2012!splinter understand that he’s allowed to grieve the life his lost, not just his love, but also everything that came with being human. I think he learnt that that was what caused his own fathers shortcomings at the start and wants to help the other before it’s too late by helping him know that he’s allowed to want things to be different and that it doesn’t make him a bad father.

- 2012!mikey getting embarrassed about how bad his cooking is, genuinely ashamed when he sees how his counter part is, but rise!mikey loved a challenge and is determined to help him learn!

When were you first introduced and what was your first reaction/thoughts on the franchise?

this is a (hopefully)funnily long answer

SO, when I was little I used to go to an in-home daycare (meaning it was just one lady babysitting about 10 different kids). When I was little we got a whole two (2) channels to watch tv, because we lived out in the country and didnt (couldnt) pay for cable. My babysitter however DID have cable, so for the hour or two we were allowed to watch tv, TMNT (2003) was occasionally watched when ever it happened to be on during tv time. Once me and my siblings were old enough we stopped going to the babysitter and no more tmnt. I could not have told you much about what I remembered of the show from that time but I know I liked it. That was roughly around 2005 or 6, so the show was still ongoing.

Fast forward (pun not intended) another 4 or 5 years and my family moves. When we move I suddenly have access to over 20 channels. I spent a couple different Saturdays watching differnt saturday morning cartoons to find ones I liked. One of those channels hosted 4Kids Saturday morning cartoons. On one of my channel surfing escapades, I saw an advertisement of Tmnt, and remembered that I liked it before. So I started watching that channel. Now this was in 2009, so I'm not sure if Back to the Sewer was just airing or it was on repeats already, but I remember watching parts of fast forward and Back to the sewer. I even got to see Turtles Forever air on TV at the time!

Then they stopped doing reruns of it, and showed other shows and I forgot about 90% of the show.

I Did know that I liked the show. And that Either Leo or Mikey or maybe Don (I was indecisive lol) was my favorite. But not Raph. I didnt like Raph because he was always so mean to Mikey and picking on him. (And this is HILARIOUS now because, Raph is one of my favorite characters lol).

Fast forward another 10 years or so and I start seeing random stuff here on tumblr about Rise of the tmnt. I wasnt sure how to feel about the style/ fact that the turtles were all different species, but well I liked the other tmnt show, so I decided to go ahead and watch it.

I LOVED IT. I wasnt sure how I felt about Leo not being the leader at first, but I LOVED this Raph, and he was a good big bro and leader. At first I also didnt know how I felt about splinter, and didnt like how distant from the boys he seemed to be. But as the show went on I loved him more! I really liked the rise series and was sad that it ended.

Another year or two later I decided to rewatch the 2003 series since I didnt remember a whole lot of it. I honestly expected not to like it as much, or that watching it as an adult would make it seem silly. But it was serious!! It had EXCELLENT continuity! I had expected things in one episode to be forgotten in the next, but it wasn't!!! It was so good, I fell in love with it all over again, (and appreciated Raph much more this time round lol).

Chilled out with other media for about 6 months, then decided to watch the 1987 series for the heck of it, enjoyed it more than I thought i would (Turtles Forever, as much as I love the movie, did the 87 boys dirty).

I had seen a clip of the Batman vs tmnt movie here on tumblr, and couldnt find anywhere to watch it online. So when I saw it in a set of tmnt movies at the store I bought it.

Also included was the three 1990's movies and the TMNT 2007 movie.

I like the 90s movies a lot more than I thought I would, the puppetry was AMAZING, kudos to all the stunt guys fighting in those suits!

At that point of watching the 87 cartoon and all those movies, I became obsessed with the franchise and have been now for over a year lol.

I got the 2012 series on dvd and was worried I wouldn't like the 3D animation style, but I actually enjoyed it WAY MORE than I thought I would. They did fun things with the eyes and backgrounds which was cool.

Each iteration is so unique, and yet has so many ties to other versions, it's just a wonderful universe and I'm so happy to be here. :)

Am now realizing that all of that is WAY more than just "initial first thoughts of the franchise" lol. but yeah I think I just really liked the serious tone of the 2003 series when I was little and the fact that it wasnt a "baby show" that brb I was allowed to watch. And turtles are cool!! So yeah little me loved it and remembered it even though if you had asked little me to tell you anything about it, all I would have probably been able to say is "WATCH OUT FOR SHREDDER" from the theme song, and that Leo got hurt at one point and the others all told stories about him and that in raph's story they fought a giant crocodile.

TigerClaw. Do I even need to explain? He's my favorite 2012 villain and honestly the coolest one and clearly the Rise guys would think so too with all their tiger quips lol. And it would be nice to have a really serious villain that’s also not Shredder/Kraang level dangerous but still more of a challenge for the turtles. Since Draxum joined the light side Big Mama’s really the only one left

Bebop and Rocksteady of course. 2012 and 2016 Bop & Rock are so funny I think they'd be even funnier in Rise considering it’s the funniest TMNT show

Usagi. Genuinely wondering how Rise would portray him—and with this Leo being so different than the 2003 and 2012 characters, if and how they might still become close friends. I’m now too much of a leosagi shipper fr, probably mainly because I just love their friendship in 2003, also I think bc he's always an adult in the 03 and 12 versions, plus they barley got to know each other in 12, so overall it’s just an idea that doesn’t really click with me. Not to mention l'm so damn asexual I think I just love to see such a good friendship satay that way. But considering how serious Usagi's character always is I'd like to see if they'd change that in Rise to match their style or keep him the same way. If he is more serious it’d be an interesting contrast to Rise Leo’s constant joking and silliness

A musical episode bc honestly come on they would've killed it. And they're all just too musical theatre to not indulge in it at least once. Especially the Broadway baby disaster twins

Dropping the "Rise of the" in the title since after the season 2 finale and movie they have officially… arisen. Since the whole point starting off was these turtles aren't as trained or shaped etc, now that they are it would be cool for them to officially become the TMNT again. Not to mention they finally said the name in the movie so it would really top it off

A cure for the ooze. Draxum presumably could make his own 'retromutagen' like in 2012 and it'd be interesting to see a plot where all these mutants around New York could actually get back to their normal lives if they wanted to. Especially since Draxum had his reformation arc he really should be undoing his mess lol.

How they found the lair. 2012's Lone Rat and Cubs was such an amazing episode and it was awesome seeing what it was like for them before finding a home. In 2003's first episode we also see them find their new permanent home, and having the same backstory for Rise Splinter and the boys could be so touching. Especially being on the run from Big Mama and Draxum. We caught that glimpse of him still in a Liu Jitsu costume as a rat and living in a box. I’d love to see between that point and whenever they moved in to their home. I also think it would be a good reminder of how much Splinter was really struggling both during childhood, while he was starring in those movie yet Sho was still trying to get him back into Hamato business, and then his time in captivity after

An explanation behind why Yoshi is called Splinter, we never got our explanation in Rise… or 2012 either now that I think about it. Even 2003's reason kind of felt like a stretch, even though it was a cute story behind Splinter's owner Yoshi losing his girlfriend. I can’t remember if Bayverse explained it and I haven’t seen the original show, but I think each version has had a different reason they give

Fungus Humongous. One of my favorite 2012 episodes that would be awesome translated to the Rise boys. We know Donnie's hallucinated fear could be beach balls and Mikey's would prob be the Gumbus or some kind of ghost. Raph's could be Mrs. Cuddles, although he did conquer that fear. I wonder what Leo's would be… I always found it interesting he didn't have any special fears like his bros. But there is something about Leo strikes me as the kind of guy who doesn't have those irrational fears or gets scared easily, so seeing an episode where they could give him an advantage could be cool. Although, since this would be after the movie he could see Kraang, or him losing his family, and his insecurities with leadership would definitely be a realistic factor. It'd probably work well as another Halloween episode

Bishop; I think in the movie the fact that female Kraang stayed back was going to introduce him. I think a lot of people know him more famously from 2012 show ofc, but my favorite use of him was definitely 2003. Dude was unhinged and a whole ass machine and seeing the Rise boys face off against him would be so cool. Not to mention he gave us the 2003 Rat King episode, another one of my favorites

Spirit Quest type episode. They have such cool mystic powers and ninpo abilities and seeing them meditate and experimenting with them would be so cool. Not to mention the costumesssss I mean how bad ass would they look in some of the 2012 get ups

Turtles in space and the Triceratons. I've recently seen by other Rise fans that the triceratons might be been hinted to from a shot in the movie with a triceratops skull in the Kraang’s ship and apparently were being worked on by the creators. 2003 and 2012 each did these plots in different ways so I wonder if Rise would approach it as a season long thing or maybe just a fun arc. Either way these guys were made to go to space and seeing them freak out over actually getting to be like Jupiter Jim would be awesome. And again, getting to see their space outfits!

Listen, I grew up with this show. I watched every single episode when it was airing (with the exceptions of Raphael Mutant Apocalypse and Wanted Bebop Rocksteady) I distinctly remember recording all the season 1 episodes on the TV so I could watch them over and over.

I am not kidding when I say that tmnt 2012 was the FIRST story driven TV I got into. All the other shows I was watching were episodic.

That show carried me from 3rd grade to fucking 8th grade.

And to this day it is still one of my favorite shows EVER.

Then rottmnt came along not even a YEAR after the 2012 "finale" (that was not a proper finale for the show. And yes I know technically Owari was the story's conclusion but come on.) And it was so different.

So unbelievably different from tmnt 2012. (Also kid me was dumb and thought Baron Draxum was supposed to be the Shredder)

I remember watching a little bit of the episode Down With The Sickness. (Starting with the part where Splinter is feral and chasing then around.) And I distinctly remember thinking "This is stupid, they got rid of tmnt 2012 for this?" And changed the channel and avoided rottmnt until 2022.

2022.

When the Rise Movie came out and tumblr would not shut up about it. (lets be real I spoiled most of the movie for myself by scrolling through tumblr.)

Thats when the tmnt 2012 hyperfixation was returning and was trying to look for fanfics on ao3

A shit ton of them were crossovers with rottmnt.

And I figured that since I wasnt finding any fics without rise, why not?

I think the first crossover fics I read were Shredder's Vendetta (very good fic btw go check it out) and Frayed Knots (which spoiled some of rise for me but Idc because I mostly forgot about the spoilers when I started watching rise.)

And because I didnt find the exact fics I wanted to read I started planning one of my own. A crossover between tmnt 2012 and rottmnt.

But I quickly ran into a problem. I couldn't write a fic based on my very limited knowledge of rottmnt.

So I binge watched it.

And it was better than I expected.

Now I really like the show

But tmnt 2012 will always take the top spot.

(Maybe its because I like darker more serious shows over more silly and goofy shows. Idk)

So there are some heavy topics in this one, but nothing too serious. But pay attention to the warnings please!

Basically about this whole idea, is looking more deeply into how Leo would feel after the Krang and prison dimension. There's 2012 Leo and the depictions of his having psychosis after Splinter dies. Yeah well, there's already PTSD, but what if he had to deal with that too? So yeah this whole thing was born from a little silly idea of Leo and Hueso having a genuine, cute moment.

Keep in mind, this is a hurt/comfort fic. Only the hurt part got a little bit out of hand.

So, now the behind the scenes cause I feel the need to write these down.

There might be a bit self-insertion happening here ngl.

You have your problems so you make your characters go through them and then have other characters comfort them, so you can feel better about your comfort characters being the same as you and having someone to trust when you're a lonely bish, but at least they have what you don't, so you ultimately feel better.

Is this a healthy way to cope? Or should I look for other coping mechanisms, can't decide honestly.

So this one's not great, it's questionable, but I needed it. Struggled through the end, probably gonna be able to tell.

9. Which character(s) do you find most difficult to write?

Okay, I said Mikey for the last one but I feel I should mention that Splinter is a very elusive character. He doesn’t actively fight me, but I don’t get enough inspiration to feel comfortable writing his character. I’m often second-guessing my drafts with him in them.

For example, I make him so serious but this man is his own kind of goofball. *hands on hips* Why can’t I ever write him like that?

4. Are there any writers that inspire you?

Truthfully, most of what I read are from different authors since most authors write like. Two Donnie fics in their lifetime.

But you bet there are!!

[Scrolling through bookmarks to save myself time. So some authors I admire will probably be left out but that’s how it’s gotta be. Feel free to ask this number again if anyone wants more recommendations.]

Every time I read something from stillateenageabomination, I get hardcore whump vibes. The fanfics are very Leo-centric but I reread them all the time to get myself in the right headspace.

Taizi has some great 2012 and 2018 stuff! All of the small things was one of the first fanfics that inspired me to start writing toddler/baby Donnie fluff! Good fics, highly recommend.

I’ve known fireworksinthenight since my fanfic.net days and I’ve read Harmful Secrets ALONE like… so many times. I think Because Fandom Says So: Donnie Falls Asleep in his Lab was when I first adopted that headcanon and when I decided that all the brothers sleep better when they’re together (or perceived to be nearby). You get turtle piles thanks to the seed that was planted that day.

WhyIsThisHappeningToMe has some AWESOME apocalypse stuff! Tales from the Shellraiser Archive - Chapter Five destroyed me. I was unable to function for hours because my brain was whirling. I was fairly hooked on Meet me when the World Ends, believe you me.

RealityBreakGirl, T33la, and Flynne are my go-to for 2003 fics!

Stormwriter has some great oneshots that make me wanna write! I don’t know what it is about them except. Just vibes. The Doctor is Out (of Blood) and Would You Kindly? are two examples.

And then, real quick, some outsider A03-ers:

CJtheStoryteller is pro-Donnie angst. I can’t recommend all of these works enough. You’re not a true Donnie fan if you haven’t read and then consistently reread Lost In A Fight. I said what I said. ;)

Sanru is the first person to convince me that OCs in a TMNT verse can absolutely work as long as you have the right writer! Plus, I have been reading Picking Up The Pieces since before I got Tumblr or A03! Complete comfort fic, 10/10, always inspires. No exaggeration.

Sometimes I read it and grow determined to have one of my fics be half as inspiring for someone else. ‘Tis a silly but earnest desire.

I grew up with tmnt 2003 so I’m biased too but I did like 2012 when it came out, but I didn’t follow it as much as I did 03

I completely agree with you on Donnie and Mikey’s characterization! I really loathed what they did to Donnie with the whole love triangle thing they wanted to do. I absolutely loved Donnie in 03 but 12 Donnie omfg. I blame a lot of my dislikes of the show on the writing itself bc I don’t think they wrote April very well either it’s odd idk.

I thought Donnie’s crush on April was cute, silly, and funny at first but they kept beating the dead horse with this and then Casey showed up, added to it, and I wanted to scream.

They ALL deserved better but how the writers treated mikey and his canonical adhd was TRASH.

This is just me very personally as well but when I was just a wee child I empathized with 03 raph a lot bc, even tho I never acted on it, I was just constantly filled with rage that’s a lie I swung a computer at my bully’s face when I’d finally had enough. I didn’t like how they treated Raph’s anger in 2012 especially during the episode where they specifically addressed it. Splinter basically just said “bottle it” and like kind of belittled him for letting things get to him. When they were insulting him for the sake for the exercise I think I realized that 12 raph has trouble seeing when people are being serious with their insults (like me lol). Those were his brothers, contextually he should’ve known they didn’t actually mean any of those things but that’s not how he takes it. And if slash SPIKE is anything to go by he actually thinks his brothers think a lot of bad things about him. He doesn’t open up to his brothers because he does not trust them with his emotions that he himself has trouble dealing with/interpreting

On a more positive note: I do love Raph and Mona’s relationship ship, it’s absolutely fantastic

12 Raph likes a woman that can kick his ass and I have to respect that

Writing characters with anger is a difficult slope and is often written badly. As someone who has anger issues but learned how to deal with them over time, when I see a character like 2012 raph, who has trouble handling and understanding his emotions, it both points out the issues and also makes it hard for me as someone who deals with the same thing, relate because it’s often demonized.

Literally half the stuff they wrote in 2012 acted like they wanted to talk about heavy issues but it was written in a way that was almost mocking and demonizing with most of not all the characters. Literally it brought out the worse in everyone of these characters and it drives me nuts

April is the “strong girl who don’t need no man/turtle” but written insufferably, Donnie is the swooning brother who basically is an incel but also a genius who seriously deserves recognition for all he’s done (rest PLS), raph and his anger issues and lack of understanding his own emotions and the perpetuated “I’m tough, don’t feel emotion” manly bullshit, the terrible depiction of Mikey and his ADHD, and I’m not sure they did a very good job or not on PTSD with Leo and his whole focus on being the leader isnt… that great from what I know. And Casey… idk tbh??? He also had some “let me fight for the girl” dumb dumb stuff so he was meh. The love triangle with him and Donnie and April was also dumb because if those three just stopped that shenanigans, can you imagine how great they’d be as a dynamic???

Anyway, ye. There is definitely a lot they could have done better with all of them but I know that is more of a time thing~
