One series I’m absolutely besotted with is Unkissed by 221b_hound. It starts one year after Sherlock’s return where Sherlock has an erotic dream about John. Lots of soft sweet moments and GOD all the pet names 😍 It’s also brilliantly podded by the one and only Podfixx.

A Series of Fortunate Stories

I love it when I discover the story I've been reading is part of a series.

Authors use a series to add one-shots to a longer work, to thematically link a group of stories, to keep short prompt-inspired stories together, or to create a novel-like story told in parts. Subscribing to a series lets me look forward to the next installment, whether it's a continuation of the story, or simply another trip through the same universe. Whether it takes a week or a year to see the next part, it's always a happy surprise to see a new story.

Here are some of the series that I've loved since I started reading fanfiction on Ao3. In truth, there are too many to mention here. Please share your favorite series, your own or another author's!

Missing Pages by @plaidadder

This is a group of interlinked short stories which tell the story of how Holmes and Watson really came to be separated at the Reichenbach Falls, and how they found each other again. Each story is in the form of a document--a letter, a journal, a surveillance report, an affidavit, etc.--which is linked to one or more ACD canon tales.

This is series engrossed me when I joined Ao3. Because I started as an ACD writer, I was excited to read this wonderful synthesis of canon, Granada Holmes, and pure inventiveness. @plaidadder is a wonderful author. I owe her so much.

You Go To My Head by @jbaillier

This series is an alternate universe one, featuring the exciting medical and romantic adventures of doctors Watson (senior neuroanaesthetist) and Holmes (neurosurgeon).

Along with @plaidadder 's series, this was among the first I read in the fandom. What is most perfect about this series-- the subtle and true characterizations, the exquisite writing, the medical realism, or the fact that there are 23 stories? Even if you binge-read the series, it will take you many happy days to read the nearly 1 million words @jbaillier has written.

Oubliette by @gardnerhill

A treatise on love and grief.

An ACD series built around an episode where Watson is kidnapped and held in an oubliette until Holmes can rescue him. An absorbing Watson Whump tale that becomes a romance. Grown to 19 parts. and still growing, I hope. Many other series by this author as well.

The Summer Boy by @khorazir

About half a year after the fateful events at Appledore, Sherlock and John embark on a private case in Sussex. For Sherlock, it’s a journey into his past, bringing up memories both happy and sad that he has locked away for almost thirty years. For John, it means coming to terms with the present – and a potential future with Sherlock.

It was probably the beautiful art work I saw here on tumblr that first drew me to @khorazir. I fell in love with this series, the deep exploration of Sherlock's past alongside case fic. A fourth installment is currently a WiP, much anticipated by me and others.

Dawn Before the Rest of the World by PoppyAlexander / @fuckyeahfightlock

In one of the grand houses of England in the 1920s, butler Sherlock Holmes is wooed to pieces by the world's most romantic gardener, John Watson.

What can I say? I love the era and how the author has realised the characters in the setting. So glad to see that the completion status is still: Complete? No.

Drawn to Stars by @totallysilvergirl

After the Culverton Smith case Sherlock is clean, working, and looking for a romantic partner—since John has told him that’s what he needs. Shame John didn’t mention he was interested in that role himself, before Sherlock went off to Rome with a gorgeous Italian copper to try to fall in love and become a complete human being.

I think almost everyone has read the first story in this series; it is a Classic (with a capital C) in the fandom. But did you know there are five stories in the series? And I hear rumours that another is on the way. When you read a story like this, you don't want it to end, and it's delightful to know that it continues.

The Postcard Tales by @mydogwatson

This author has 19 series of short fiction, of which I am highlighting just one: Postcard Tales. (See also Postcard Tales II, III, IV, Interlude, and Virtual Postcard Tales). So many gems in all her collections, beautifully-written short stories set in ACD and BBC universes. Many favorite stories here. Bookmark this page: a perfect place to pick up something short to read that will not disappoint.

This series took me through the Great Pandemic of 2020. Every day a new microfic morsel and art to look forward to! Fourteen parts, each with an alphabet full of story/art.

@notjustamumj has 76 series to her name. Seventy-six! And @scrub456 has 23 series of stories and art. In the face of such prolific talent, I can only bow in admiration. These little bits of art and happiness are a multi-fandom treasure.

I can see I need to write a second installment of this post. There are so many other series I have loved. Please reblog, sharing your own favourites!

A Death In The Family

Many years ago, I was so inspired by @atlinmerrick and @221b-hound, that I was certain I wanted to write fabulous stories like they did.  Little did I know that I actually needed some talent to do so. lol!  They encouraged me and I came up with this. https://archiveofourown.org/works/1168205  .  I’m hippiechick on AO3.

In the meantime, I picked up a book called 642 Things to Write About. One prompt was ‘A death in the family.’ This is what I wrote.  (I found this in a notebook when I was straightening up my desk the other day.) It explains my tumblr name.

Mystery was a little kitty I adopted from the pound.  She was special needs because she had an injury when she was brought in and no one knew what had happened, ergo her name.  Her tail had the better part of the fur stripped off it about 1/3 the way up from her butt.  When I got her, it was wrapped in bandages and I never actually saw it.  The vet tried to heal it but nothing seemed to work.  After a few weeks, I made the decision to amputate Mystery’s tail. It would have been a long plume if the top part was any indication.  But it just wasn’t meant to be. Mystery recovered quite well from the procedure and once her fur grew back, most people mistakenly thought she was a Manx. Her poorly healed pelvis began to cause health issues and Mystery spent a few cumulative weeks every year of her life at the vet’s.  But the other days spent with me, Pete and Jeepers were peaceful, fun, and loving.

One January evening in 2010, I knew Mystery wasn’t feeling well.  When she was beginning to have issues, she would crawl up on my chest and curl up under my chin.  She was only a small 8 pound kitty so it was a cozy fit. As I sat on the sofa trying to comfort her and planning my next day around getting her to the vet, there was a sub-sonic rumble that could only mean one thing.  A small earthquake rocked the house.  It was very quick, more like a truck out on the freeway but you learn to tell the difference quickly! All the cats looked up, then went back to what they were doing.  Mystery snuggled closer. 

 Around 11 pm, I headed to bed.  By that time, Santa Ana winds had started blowing, adding an eerie sound and feel to an already stressful night.  Normally, Mystery would jump up once I got settled, and settle herself on my stomach.  At some point I always roll onto my side and she would do a little log-roll walk along with me.  This night, she nestled on my tummy, but didn’t move when I started turning over a few minutes later.  I reached out from under the covers to pet her and ask what was wrong.  She was completely limp and lifeless.  I sat up and cuddled her for a while to be sure of what was going on.  Mystery had snuggled up with me and taken her last breath.  I know I cried for a while and Jeepers looked on. It was now close to midnight on a cold windy January night.  What to do with her little body so that ornery, territorial Jeepers didn’t tear her limb from limb. So I found an old pillow and a piece of warm flannel sheet to wrap her in and made her as comfortable as I could in the extra shower stall--just in case she woke up.  You must always have hope, even when you feel the warmth draining away.

I remember sitting on the sofa for a while not really doing anything--just contemplating mortality, I suppose.  I remember writing a little epitaph on FB, planning where in the garden to bury her (under the pink bougie), and wandering around the house aimlessly.  Eventually I went to bed and slept poorly.  The next morning, she was still where I had put her so I began to accept that Mystery was really dead.

I went to work and somehow made it through the day.  My students were mostly kind and understanding.  I got home, dug the hole under the bougainvillea, wrapped Mystery in a piece of the blanket that had become shrouds for all those that went before her.  I put in some treats and a few toys, wrapped her carefully and put her into the ground, from whence we all come and to which we all must return (except James Doohan who got shot into space--lucky dog!) Couldn’t tell you what I said, but most likely I thanked her for being the sweetest little kitty I had ever had and probably apologized for the tail thing and not taking better care of her.  But I don’t think she had a bad life.  She was much loved and she loved in return.  What more can we ask for those in our care that are unable to care for themselves.  Her collar and nametag still hang on the fridge 4 years later, as does my favorite picture of her. She was a good girl and I still miss her.  RIP Mystery.

An Illustration of @221b_hound’s Inked in Memory. A patron requested tattoo designs and 221b’s fic was the first thing I thought of! 

The tattoo was of a double-headed padlock. The top lock was open and the bottom one closed. The padlock itself contained decorative swirls that made it look old-fashioned. The loops of the lock made, Sherlock could see, a stylised S, and the design within the padlock shape outlined a subtle H around the keyhole. The whole thing was only about four centimetres high, inked on the left side of John’s chest.

The tattoo on the left side of Sherlock’s chest, over his heart, was an ornate key, marked with the same type of patterns adorning the memento mori padlock on John’s skin. It only took a moment to see that the old-fashioned key and its jutting tooth were a stylised J, and that the head of the key, rising in three bumps, contained a W amongst the swirls. The size was a perfect match. It looked made to go into the padlock on John's chest.

Now for the challenge! I went through ALL my bookmarks, pulled all the fics that are part of series, and then made NEW entries specifically for Series of Fics, and I am currently putting together the MONSTER list that will be the MFL list.

All the series on this list have fics I have read in them, but NOT NECESSARILY read the entire series, so take that as you will. And another heads up, in these entries below, when I mark "Series WiP" that ONLY means that the series was marked as incomplete on the Works page, chances are all the stories in the series are complete and can still be read in full.

Rec: I’ve reviewed earlier parts of this series, and as with those, you don’t necessarily have to read the whole series as long as you are familiar with the broadcast episodes and go into it with the background of Sherlock, John, and Mary having been involved in a polyamorous relationship. This is the only installment which doesn’t actually have any Johnlockary, so if you’ve been holding off for that reason, now is your chance! But I do encourage you to try the whole thing. I’ve grown to love this series more with each installment. The author has done such wonderful things with the basic ingredients of series 4 especially.

In this episode, the main plot revolves around the fate of Eurus Holmes. It’s a deeply personal portrayal of the legacy of grief, overlaying the more recent scars of Mary’s death, and how such deep-cutting trauma can either break a family apart or bind them more closely together. By creating quiet and momentous moments while maintaining an emotional tension that feels both real and raw, the characters are allowed to flourish and breathe, and the true core of their connections are allowed to come to the fore.

I’m not just talking about Johnlock either, although that is certainly given its full due. Honestly one of my biggest regrets about the BBC series is that they didn’t do anything with Harry other than make her a punchline in the first episode. There have been a couple of authors who have taken up the challenge brilliantly, though, and this is one of them. She is used to do great things here, particularly with Mycroft, but also as a mirror or perhaps a magnifying glass for Sherlock and John, and their issues with intimacy, anger, and guilt.

It’s really a marvelous piece of work, carefully crafted and precisely executed. A catharsis and healing for series 4 sufferers and an enrichment and expansion for everyone else.

You're not doing anything wrong by not being interested in sex. I'm not interested in sex these days either, and I want this to be a safe place for people like us as well. All I ask is that everyone be respectful of each other's comfort, which is why I highlighted the warning about sex scenes in my post about 221b_hound's Unkissed series. I'm sex-positive; I just don't want to accidentally set a trap for sex-repulsed people, because I used to be one.
