Nanomanufacturing process slashes chip production costs by 99%
The current microelectronics manufacturing method is expensive, slow and energy and resource intensive. But a Northeastern University professor has patented a new process and printer that not only can manufacture advanced electronics and chips more efficiently and cheaply, it can make them at the nanoscale. "I thought that there must be an easier way to do this, there must be a cheaper way to do this," says Ahmed A. Busnaina, the William Lincoln Smith professor and a distinguished university professor at Northeastern University. "We started, basically, with very simple physical chemistry with a very simple approach." Busnaina runs the National Science Foundation Center for High-rate Nanomanufacturing at Northeastern University.

I'm finally done with painting my dice tower!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was a long journey, but we got there. Thanks to my partner, who 3d printed this piece, I've had a lot of fun working on it every week for such a wonderful result 馃挍
Here are some more photos of the process!

My brother modelled Puppycat on Blender, 3D printed and painted him! Cutest thing I've ever seen.

I'll have to wait until it gets here before I can figure out the engineering, but I'm hoping I can mod more articulation into that Sisu before I turn it into Discord. Part of what makes his movements so fun is how bendy he is in the show.

BUT, if it gets here and it becomes clear it would be too much work for little payoff, I won't bother though. Also not sure if they make brown fidget slugs. Paint would likely chip off immediately on all those joints, so they'd def have to be brown already.

I 3D printed my own stamp and it turned out so gooooood 馃槶
I digitized my birch tree pattern in GIMP, and then used the stamp-o-matic tool on thingyverse. It was so easy!! I just uploaded my image to the tool they listed in the description, copied the output, clicked customize on the thingyverse page, and then pasted those values into the input. After slicing, adjusting the size, and printing, this is the result!
After watching this video by TheCrafsman SteadyCraftin (sooo good, the little puppet teaches you to craft 馃グ) I thought I would have to create a silicone mold and make a rubber stamp, but because skin is so elastic, I think it actually works better when the stamp is made of hard plastic 馃く
Need to research ink pads that don't wash off as easily, but I am so excited to use this for makeup in one of the costumes I'm making! Just have to print 14 more eyes lololol

Safety critical components for aircraft and Formula 1 racing cars could one day be 3D printed via a new technique, developed by researchers at UCL and the University of Greenwich, that substantially reduces imperfections in the manufacturing process. The technique was developed after the team used advanced X-ray imaging to observe the causes of imperfections that formed in complex 3D printed metal alloy components. If this technique becomes widely deployed it could make a range of these components, from artificial hip joints to aircraft parts, stronger and more durable. The study, published in Science, observes the forces at play during the laser-based 3D printing of metal alloys in unprecedented detail and in real time.

I remember when 3D printers first became a thing and there was a huuuge hype about how you could 3D print anything and it would revolutionize everything
And then there was a phase of fussing around realizing that there are actually some unintuitive constraints on what shapes are printable based on slicing and support of overhangs, and how you have to do fiddly business like putting tape on the platform and watching the first couple layers like a hawk or it can detach and slump sideways and become a big horrible useless mess
And then, after all that, people kinda came around to realize that even if you get all that sorted, the object you've made is fundamentally an object made of moderately-well-adhered layers of brittle plastic, which is actually a pretty shitty material for almost every purpose.
And aside from a few particular use cases the whole hype just sort of dropped off to nothing.
Anyway I feel like we're seeing pretty much the same arc play out with generative AI.
