Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month: KEVIN MIYAZAKI
Today we highlight Milwaukee-based photographer and artist Kevin Miyazaki, and his book A Guide to Modern Camp Homes: 10 New Models & Plans for Persons of Japanese Ancestry. Our copy was published in 2024, but editions were also released in 2013, and 2018. Miyazaki’s statement on the final page characterizes the book as “a fictional publication containing only facts.” Styled after Sears Roebuck catalogues of the time, the optimistic salesmanship stands in harsh contrast to both the bleak descriptions of the camps, where Japanese Americans were forcibly relocated during World War II, and the heavy legacy of our nation’s human rights abuses. In a section titled Home Design, the copy assures: “Constructed mainly from wood and tar paper, your new home is designed to conform to international law.”
The book draws extensively from archival materials. Photographs come from the catalogues of the Library of Congress and include documentary work by Ansel Adams, Clem Albers, Fred Clark, Hikaru Iwasaki, Dorothea Lange, Tom Parker and Francis Stewart. First person testimonials are from Densho, a public history project documenting and preserving oral histories and primary source materials related to the unjust incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II. Libby and Patrick Castro of LP/ws Design Studio crafted the architectural designs.

Copies of A Guide to Modern Camp Homes are available for purchase through the Japanese American National Museum.

Meet the Artist: @nyangjinart
Hi everyone! My name is Jin (she/her) and I'm a Korean American artist from NYC. I love drawing magical retro aesthetic art and cute animals that are colorful and vibrant. Art has been my comfort zone and passion for as long as I can remember, so I hope that my art can give that sense of comfort and nostalgia for others! I would have never thought my art journey would bring me to such a community of vast people who also love what I love, so I hope that I can make more connections!
Nice to meet you, Jin! Below are some pieces she has picked out for you all.

❥・Jason Todd — vietnamese partner
❥・tags: jason todd blurb, jason todd is a nerd, vietnamese!reader, fem!pronouns in vietnamese dialouge, no gendered language in english dialogue, can be read as gn!reader
❥・word count: 407
❥・─────────────────────
Jason Todd is smart. He loved going to school. So when his partner—the receiver of his affections—happened to be someone from an entirely different culture? He made sure to learn everything he could to make them and their family feel comfortable and respected.
When you started talking, and you revealed you were Vietnamese, he immediately began researching the best online schools to learn the language. Despite the vast number of tones in the alphabet, he didn't back down.
It wasn't until he officially asked to be your boyfriend that he revealed this fact. He stuttered through a poorly translated speech with the worst accent you've heard. But he tried.
"Anh muốn em với anh đi chơi và anh làm bạn trai của em," he stuttered, clutching a piece of paper with the phonetic spelling of the sentence.
You blinked, unable to believe what you were seeing. Someone—a romantically interested someone—learned your language and was asking you out in that language.
If it wasn't a confession, you would've told him you loved him right then and there.
When you accepted, he couldn't be happier. He insisted you'd take him to the best Vietnamese food spots in Gotham.
He listened as you ranted about Vietnamese culture, mentally taking notes as you explained customs you grew up with.
Then he learned about Tết. It was something so interesting to him. He'd heard of Lunar New Year—Cass celebrated it—but he didn't know there was a Vietnamese version.
He researched so much. So, so much.
He had the entire family get custom tailored áo dai. He and Alfred learned how to make thịt kho, canh khổ qua, where to buy lanterns and lì xì envelopes.
And of course, he got the ones for the correct year. Of course, he allowed Steph a purple áo dai. Of course, he allowed all his siblings choose their colors. Of course, Jason reserved two red ones for the two of you—it was your color as much as it was his, as much as it was the color for Tết.
When the time came, he'd spent weeks practicing the phrase. He can't mess it up.
"Anh yêu em rất nhiều," he mumbled into your ear when all his siblings were scattered in the living room with their bowls and plates of food.
"I love you too," I respond quietly, pecking his cheek.
Because a man who does all this for you?
Of course you love Jason Todd.

Meet the Artist: @kiisaes
Hi there, I'm Min / Becki (any pronouns)! I like drawing both fan and original art! I'm primarily a cartoonist and illustrator, and I aim to craft narratives that are fun and entertaining but also speak to the human condition. Comics are my one true love; I adore reading and making them, but also nerding out about the technical stuff like paneling, lettering, thumbnailing... You know, the stuff no one cares about. I post my comics on tumblr, and I have a longer comic in the works that you can check out at @chimerakingdom, if you're interested! In my free time, I like to draw (duh), play pirated DS games on my PC, read comics / manga, and hang out with my friends. I have several Kirby and shrimp plushies, but what I really want is a cat I can call some silly name like Bread.
Pleased to meet you, Min! Below are some pieces they have picked out for you all to appreciate.

For more of Min's work, be sure to check out their Tumblr, @kiisaes!

It’s Fine Press Friday!
This week we highlight Amidst This, by Portland based book artist and designer Timme Lu. Described by Lu as “An internal dialogue; a conversation between pages. Conversation between textures, senses, insecurities, anxieties, and self-doubt,” the book was published in 2020, released in a limited edition of 35. Lu completed the design, printing, and binding in Portland, OR, in collaboration with IPRC and Caldera Arts. The type is set in Century Italic and Century Light. The paper, varying in translucent, alternates in Sekishu and Glama Natural.
Lu’s geometric designs layer atop his writing, creating visually striking erasure poems. Scattered among triangular shards, one reads: “a / Shattered / piece / Missing.”
This book was acquired in memory of Senior Academic Librarian Kathy Bowes, who died in 2021.
