[ 📹 A Ukrainian soldier surrenders to Russian forces in the city of Avdiivka, northwest of Donetsk City, where Ukrainian defenses collapsed in recent days. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation declared the city "liberated" today.]
🇷🇺⚔️🇺🇦 🚨
RUSSIAN FORCES SIEZE THE CITY OF AVDIIVKA IN DPR AFTER UKRAINIAN WITHDRAWAL
Russian Forces have seized the city of Avdiivka, in the South Donetsk direction, in the eastern Donbas region of Ukraine, after Ukrainian troops fled their positions in a messy withdrawal from the city.
The city of Avdiivka is located just northwest of the Russian held city of Donetsk, Capital of the Donetsk People's Republic, one of four new regions that voted to join the Russian Federation in September 2022 in a widely criticized referendum that, nonetheless, was recognized by the Russian legislature and ensconced into Russian law.
After months of fierce battles which saw a long period of slow, grinding and halting gains by Russian forces, followed by sudden rapid advances after a recent collapse in Ukrainian manpower following two years of steep losses and a failed summer offensive. And with the United States failing to provide artillery shells and ammunition at the same rate it has for the last two years, the defensive lines of the Armed Forces of Ukraine finally collapsed in Avdiivka.
A day prior to the final order of withdrawal coming down from Ukraine's newly minted Commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, General Alexsandr Syrsky, Ukrainian troops began fleeing their positions "uncontrollably" as Russian forces made lightning gains and Russian artillery pummeled the retreating units, which were said to be withdrawing in small groups of 10-20 soldiers in a haphazard fashion.
Speaking about the situation in a statement, Ministry of Defense spokesperson, Igor Konashenkov, said, “The order of the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Syrsky, to abandon the city was issued only a day after the uncontrolled flight of Ukrainian troops from Avdiivka began."
Soon after General Syrsky gave the order for a full withdrawal, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told reporters the withdrawal had become necessary because of a lack of sufficient assistance from the West, causing the AFU to suffer from, what he called an "artificial" critical shortage of ammunition.
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference yesterday, Zelensky said in his speech that "Keeping Ukraine in the artificial deficits of weapons, particularly in a deficit of artillery and long-range capabilities, allows (Russian President Vladimir) Putin to adapt to the current intensity of the war," and claimed the sudden collapse of defenses in Avdiivka was actually a withdrawal who's aim it was to "save our soldiers lives."
Meanwhile, according to Konashenkov, "measures are being taken to finally clear the city of militants and block the Ukrainian units that have left the city and settled at the Avdeevka coking plant."
Konashenkov also added that the liberation of Avdiivka made it possible to move the frontline away from the city of Donetsk, where Ukrainian forces regularly fire HIMARS, artillery shells, and cluster munitions into the commercial and residential center of the city, targeting civilians with a punishing regularity that can now, possibly and thankfully, come to an end.
Avdiivka, as a northern suburb of Donetsk City, has been involved in the fighting since it began in 2014, and has been held by Ukrainian forces for the entirety of that time, with the AFU using the city as a staging ground the for strikes on Donetsk and other parts of the southern Donbas region.
On Saturday, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported to the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Armed Forces, President Vladimir Putin, "the complete seizure" of the city of Avdiivka in the DPR.
According to Shoigu, Avdiivka represented "a powerful defensive stronghold of the Ukrainian Armed Forces" which has now been taken control over by the Tsentr Group of Forces under the command of General Andrey Mordvichev.
The Russian Defense Minister said Russian forces had taken control over "an area of 31.75 square kilometers" which has been "liberated from Ukrainian nationalists."
In his statement, Shoigu said the losses for the AFU over the previous 24-hours in the Avdiivka direction amounted to more than 1'500 soldiers, and that under continuous Russian fire damage, AFU soldiers mostly managed to leave Avdiivka rapidly, however they did so leaving Western weapons and hardware behind.
Shoigu reiterated that cleanup operations continue near the Avdiivsky coke plant, with Russian forces now attempting to block them in, while units with the Tsentr Group of Forces continue offensive operations to "further liberate the Donetsk People's Republic from Ukrainian nationalists."

Engineering Forces of Ukraine
youtube
Engineering forces of Ukraine are a type of special forces in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which are designed to provide engineering support for combat operations. There are units of engineering troops in each of the types of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as separately in the Main Directorate of Operational Support.
Among the main tasks in peacetime are the detection and destruction of explosive objects and obsolete ammunition, participation in the protection of hydraulic structures and bridges during floods and ice drifts, elimination of the consequences of natural disasters - in Ukraine together with the National Emergency Service and abroad in peacekeeping missions.
In war, Engineer Forces perform tasks both at the front and in the rear, helping to solve logistical or defense tasks :
engineering reconnaissance of the enemy, terrain and facilities;
construction and equipment of fortification structures (trenches, trenches and communication passages, shelters, dugouts, storage facilities, etc.), arrangement of field structures for the accommodation of troops (housing, economic, medical);
building various types of engineering barriers, carrying out the installation of minefields, equipment of non-explosive barriers (anti-tank ditches, escarpments, counterscarps, pits, etc.);
demining of the area and objects;
preparation and maintenance of troop movement routes;
equipment and maintenance of crossings on water obstacles, including the construction of bridges;
extraction and purification of water in the field and others;
providing countermeasures against the enemy's intelligence and weapon guidance systems.

Things aren't looking good for Ukraine. The very thin silver lining is that we might be closing in on the end of the war. Unfortunately it's because Ukraine is rapidly approaching the "to the last Ukrainian" part.
Lastly, in the final—and perhaps most foreboding—bit of statistical analysis, we have new data that appears to show Ukraine’s current population has dropped to even lower than some of the worst predictions. Recall that Ukraine started off with nearly 50 million people at its peak. Some have suggested they still retain as much as 35-40M. A New leaked census document shows Ukraine currently at 23 million:
Just weeks ago, Medvedev had released a statement that pro-Ukrainians ridiculed and laughed at, where he stated that Ukraine is actually currently below 20 million:
Dmitry Medvedev predicts the collapse of Ukraine: “The population on the territory controlled by Kiev is 19.7 million people, outside the country - already 17.9 million. In fact, half of 37 million in 2022 and about 40% of the population at the beginning of the 21st century" Such a vector of development is clearly visible, since only about half of the population remains on the territory of the country, said the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia.
If these findings are even remotely true, then the Ukrainian state faces true catastrophe in the not so distant future, as Medvedev correctly foresees. MoonofAlabama also covered this in greater detail, so if you want to see an even more granular breakdown with charts, etc., you can check that article out.
Yeesh.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio: The USA isn't giving up on trying to settle the conflict in Ukraine, but priorities may change
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Thursday, 1st May, that the United States won't stop seeking a diplomatic solution to the war in Ukraine, but its involvement can be limited in the future.
"We are not giving up in the sense that we won't refuse assistance if we are able to provide it. But there will come a time when the president (Donald Trump) will decide how much time the senior leaders of our government can devote to this issue," Rubio said in an interview with Fox News.
He said the U.S. is well aware of the positions of both Russia and Ukraine, but they remain so divergent that there's no room for significant progress at the moment.
Tumblr media
Conflicting signals: is the USA pulling out of mediation?
On the same day, the State Department announced that the United States would no longer act as lead mediator in the Russia-Ukraine talks. While Washington intends to continue to support peace efforts, its representatives won't "fly around the world every time negotiators from both sides meet."
As early as 29th April, State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce warned that the US would end its participation in the talks if there was no progress in resolving the conflict. Two days later, however, President Trump's special envoy Keith Kellogg denied this information, saying that America was not withdrawing from the mediation role.
The divergent statements suggest that the administration doesn't yet have a clear strategy on how to proceed. While some officials point to a reluctance to waste resources without visible results, others stress that the US remains ready to help if the opportunity arises.
