The hard truth about occultism and witchcraft is that you genuinely do have to be willing to lose your mind. That’s not me romantisizing mental struggle or psychosis.

The thing no one talks about, at least not honestly, is the threshold one passes in initiation, where the mystical, psychological, symbolic and literal merge. When I say you have to be willing to lose your mind, I mean you have to be willing to accept the possibility that you may in fact be crazy. Your worst possible fear, none of this is real and it’s all happening in your head. What will you do if you realize you’re simply crazy? The wise man will turn away, but the initiate, the alchemist, will be unphased.

All people who dabble with spirituality and occultism will eventually meet this threshold. When things actually start working, when your spells yield results, when the impossible occurs and you truly have no other explanation. When the Gods finally respond. Be willing to lose your mind, be willing to experience things you cannot explain. And be willing to talk to yourself with the honesty that you simply cannot know. That’s what makes your faith and pursuits worthy.

The most talented and most powerful witches and magis are those who do not flinch when the impossible occurs. They no longer question themselves about the absurdity, they no longer wonder if any of this is real because they know it doesn’t matter. And that’s why they’re so powerful, they have complete faith that their work is very real. And when someone challenges that, they don’t crumble, they rise. We talk a lot in this community about the concept of “awakening” to your psychic abilities. Sensing energy, having divine intuition, telling fortunes and affecting the world through intention. But we hardly ever expose that before those gifts explode, there is always a period of what feels like insanity. The mind interrogating itself. Sensitivity to the mystical. It feels like being given access to the background code of your simulated reality, and realizing that the same code is written into your flesh, mind and soul.

Tldr. Witchcraft is very aesthetically pleasing, very pretty. We often don’t show the very ugly side of it, the white knuckles, the tears and chaos. Inviting these forces into your life is not trivial, not at all. They will force you to change and they will force you to lose your mind, even if only to teach you how to find it.

Every few months a friend of mine who is also a witch will come to me and express that she thinks she’s losing her mind again. And I smile because I know that she must be growing so much, getting so much more powerful. And a couple days ago, when I went to her and expressed that I was losing my mind again, she laughed too.

“Welcome to the next phase of your journey with Lord Lucifer!”

and her saying that immediately made everything click. I’m still being tested and cultivated. This bought of insanity is surely far from the last i will experience. Getting this far and surviving means I am not only advancing, I am continuing to grow into the role I was meant to serve for him.

Anyways, if you get to that point in your practice where you feel like you’re at your breaking point, I won’t fault you for stepping back. That’s the logical decision.

But I can also assure you, you are not alone. The mystic floats in the same waters the psychotic drowns. It may feel like you’re drowning and struggling, you may in fact just be learning how to tread water. and if you think you’re beyond this phenomenon, if this has never happened to you.

His breath carried a metallic sweetness, the pungent scent of morbid death clinging to him, yet his eyes shimmered like fragments of the twilight sky. With hands still stained by others' blood, he cupped her face without hesitation, forcing her gaze to remain locked on his:

"I cannot love you the way a human longs to be loved, not anymore... But I can free you from all your pain and introduce you to carnal pleasures, my dear. I can make you love me in your life, and in your brief death, we shall share each other. Just let me possess you, and we'll become one. Equals, one flesh, one spirit."

HEARTLINK: Chapter 1

Summary: R wakes up with no memories of the past and is introduced into a seemingly unfamiliar world of superheroes and magic powers. She has little to no control over who she is and is thrust into a plot that mimics a dating simulator - R can only hope to survive through it all by increasing her BONDs with others and gaining HEARTs; but little does she know, that only weaves her further into danger.

*This is a reverse harem yandere MHA story. All characters are minimum age 20 to fit the reality of the fact that hero-training should probably happen in adulthood, ya know?

A loading screen slowly began, with small pink dashes rotating in the woman’s vision. Above it was the phrase HEARTLINK in bubbly, pink letters. It felt as though her body was not her own, if she even had one. In fact, other than being conscious and observing what happened, she could not conjure any thoughts.

Moments later, the loading was complete and a name option appeared; it had autofilled to R, so she accepted it, an invisible finger aiming toward the CONFIRM option.

Despite several attempts, the NO seemed to be unavailable. R was left with no other options, confirming the YES. The darkness faded as the scene became unfamiliarly animated, yet without any recollection of what existed before, it was hard to confirm its unfamiliarity. It was an almost barren apartment with only the necessities. The only thing that was tied to a personality was the television screen and gaming device.

R had awareness and common sense and a bureau of knowledge, it seemed. But as to who she was, where she was - it all drew a blank.

At least she had a name.

Moments later, she noticed something attached to her wrist: a small bracelet that had a faint glow and the charm o it was a circular gear associated with a settings menu. R wasn’t sure how she knew that, but she poked it momentarily, only to be startled by the results.

R clicked on SETTINGS and observed the various mechanisms - only to notice there were only two: NOTIFICATIONS and ACHIEVEMENTS. R clicked to turn NOTIFICATIONS on before backing into the CHARACTERS section. Detailed were only three out of… several other individuals who had a black outline and silhouette with ??? for a name. However, the three that were available were curious.

R clicked on the options, but both yielded empty slots. There was something so… familiar about the formatting that she couldn’t quite place. 

The next character was HIMIKO TOGA with a vaguer Quirk called ‘Transform.’ Apparently, she was a family friend, which was more information that R could access. And the last one had a name but no figure: Shigaraki Tomura, with a relationship of ‘Online friend’ and no known Quirk. That left R wondering what exactly a Quirk was. The definition given by the menu essentially summarized it as a mutation humans experienced that could be called a super power.

Then was her quirk… this?

R returned and pressed PLAYER STATS. R took several minutes to review her personal stats, each with a distinct capability, but all at the base level of (1/5).

ADAPTABILITY: Ability to adjust one’s personality and/or dialogue.

CHARISMA: Ability of persuasion, flirting, and confidence.

INSIGHT: Ability of emotional intelligence and intuition.

TALENT: Ability of practical skills and hobbies.

WILLPOWER: Ability of freedom.

[CHAPTER 1: BEGIN]

As of that moment, the statistics meant nothing to her - each held its own appeal for surviving in a foreign world and had to exist for a reason. But instead of being able to collet her thoughts - or, at least, further questions - the menu closed and it returned to the real world, only to be disrupted by a small box in her vision.

[You woke with a start as your phone began to ring. HIMIKO <3 is calling.]

Pick up?

[Yes.] [No.]

R was inclined to tap Yes to get some semblance of real-world adjustment.

[HIMIKO squeals so loudly you pull the phone away from your ear. You can’t help the budding smile that meets your tired expression. She finally quiets down.]

[“R! I just got back from my trip. I missed you so-o-o much! Can we hang out?]

Hang out with HIMIKO?

[Yes.] [No.]

R pressed Yes once again, feeling ill at the sudden restraints placed against her by this system. She suddenly recognized the urgency to upgrade her statistics. But how could she do that? Whatever was happening, it required a descent amount of intuition and adjustments, even without knowing where she came from previously. 

[“Great! Can we meet at our old spot? I’ll bring your favorite ice cream flavor.”]

[As always, there is a threatening undertone to your childhood friend - it seems to be more prevalent than it was in the past.]

Threatening? Who was this childhood friend of R’s?

What do you answer with?

[That sounds great, Himiko. I missed you.] [Hell no. You’re creeping me out.] [How about another time…?]

R sensed the hint she’d been given and could not help but agree with it.

[“Oh my gosh, really?! I love you so-o-o much! I…”]

[A sniff came from the other line. You made HIMIKO very happy. You have gained additional HEARTs.]

A notification was sent to her bracelet that read: [HIMIKO is thinking about how pretty your blood would look drizzled on an ice cream cone.]

That… was uneasy. But the woman seemed nice, despite whatever the narrator seemed to imply. 

[“So… you’ll be there, right, R? You’re not still mad at me?”]

[I wouldn’t miss it for the world.] [No, but let’s not talk about what happened, okay?] [I changed my mind. You’re scary, Himiko.]

R selected the first option again, trying to gauge what exactly HEARTs achieved. But after Himiko hung up moments later, she wasn’t given much of a choice to explore the idea.

[The weather is lovely as you pack up some candy to share and head to the park. You arrive early and enjoy the cool breeze. The park is mostly abandoned because of the holiday with only a few delinquent kids near the pond. You spot HIMIKO as she approaches.]

R took in Himiko’s appearance. There was something off-putting in a charming way; she had cute, blonde, messy buns and her eyes were a bright yellow that seemed to sparkle when she spotted R. She wore a school-girl outfit, despite the fact that R had read the file and she was twenty-years-old. 

[HIMIKO squeals again and dashes up to you, holding two ice cream cones in her hands. She is quick to shove a FLAVOR ice cream at you, so full of excitement that it seemed she would burst. Her smile was entirely fanged.]

[You take the ice cream and give it a lick. You return the with a gentle smile. HIMIKO’s cheeks blush brightly and she is momentarily subdued. You sense some anxiety from the meeting.]

R wanted to know what had happened when they last met, but the dialogue options were limiting. She realized all she knew about herself was a name. How would she survive around the people who already knew her when she didn’t even know herself?

[HIMIKO is waiting for you to say something eagerly.]

[You’ve changed a lot, HIMIKO.] [Don’t be a stranger. You don’t need to be nervous.] [It’s been a while, hasn’t it? I forgot how much I despised you.]

The final option was harsh and cruel. R did not know who she used to be, but that was overboard, even if it’s to collect information. So she chose the chummiest.

[After you console her, you wrap HIMIKO in a warm, comforting hug. Her body goes stiff before returning the hug by squeezing hard enough to make you gasp. She released a quiet sigh of happiness and buried her face into your neck. You think back to when she attacked and nearly drained you of blood - how could this harmless woman you’d known all your life do that again? You have gained additional HEARTs.]

R’s blood ran cold, even if her body had no physical reaction to the news. HIMIKO… had tried to kill her? But if they were such close friends, why? Although the set-up of this world seemed familiar, certain behaviors did not. Was this some sort of lawless world?

{“I really can’t apologize enough, R… I just got so mad about you leaving me behind to be brainwashed at UA once you graduated. I just wanted to teach you a lesson, but I went overboard… Your blood is just so-o-o pretty, you know?”]

[Would you like some more?] [It’s fine, Himiko. Your Quirk is hard to control.] [It was scary. I thought I was dead.]

Once again, R chose the neutral answer. She could infer that Transform meant some sort of vicious, painful Quirk, so she didn’t think testing it out would be beneficial.

[HIMIKO pulls away and grins. During the hug, her ice cream dripped down her fingers. Her eyes are glued to you as she licks it up, and in several large bites, consumed the entire ice cream. You finish yours, too. You gain additional HEARTs.]

[“You know… I know you said you didn’t want to talk about it, but… I was really, really scared when I did that. I was scared I ruined everything and that I lost my best friend. It was ev en worse to have found out you were alive and didn’t even report me!”]

[HIMIKO pauses, fingers twiddling as she gulped. Her eyes shimmer with possible tears as you two maintain eye contact.]

[“Sometimes… I think you’re just too cute and perfect for someone like me… That’s why it’s my goal to make sure I become the cutest ever so I can earn a best friend as great as you.”]

[We’ll always be best friends, Himiko. I love you.] [You’re so cute already!] [You should definitely work on that.]

R had been cruising through decently from the middle-ground answer, so she continued. It felt foreign to have everything that escaped her lips be utterly scripted and controlled down to the fluctuation and tone. But from the conversation alone, she was already starting to find more about R.

[“Oh, you really think so? I guess you always have. I’m still trying to be as cute as you, though! I’ve even joined an organization.”]

[HIMIKO looks a little antsy when you ask exactly what she was doing for work. She has a blush from your compliment. You gain additional HEARTs.]

A notification from your watch displayed for R: [HIMIKO is so grateful to have a friend like you.]

[“Promise you won’t tell or I’ll have to kill you, O.K.? I know you’ll probably be disappointed, but… I joined a budding new organization with other people like me. Its name is the League of Villains, or LOV for short. It’s the only way I know to get even cuter and stronger ever since I got caught draining that one cutie of blood, so there’s no way I could ever get into U.A like you.”]

[I don’t judge you, Himiko. Do what you think is right for your happiness.] […] [I don’t think we should be friends if you do that, Himiko. Villains are evil.]

R sensed the woman was rather unhinged as she was, so agreeing was probably the best selection. She had gathered that R was either attending U.A. or about to be. By context… did that mean it was some sort of law or training school?

[HIMIKO is on the verge of tears and hugs you tightly. You both sway side to side. HIMIKO is thinking about how important you are to her and that she’ll be sure to spare you from the havoc the L.O.V. would cause. You gain additional HEARTs.]

Suddenly, a small glow emitted from her wrist. She hadn’t noticed the small bar that seemed engraved into her palm before with a smaller bar labeled BOND and a larger one labelled HEART SYNC that corresponded to Himiko. The BOND level reached an upgrade, and it was like the world had paused in that moment. Not even the breeze disrupted her as the menu screen appeared once more and, suddenly, she could level up a statistic.

In the immediate, it seemed that CHARISMA was the right option when she was with someone as unstable as Himiko. So, R pressed the confirmation and a small boost of confidence, hardly notable, consumed her body for a brief moment.

[“R… I love you. You can’t ever leave me, okay?”]

As if it were even possible, R noticed an additional restraint on herself. Something had changed, as though it was a cutscene for a movie - an instance that was unable to be changed. Three ACHIEVEMENTs dinged from her wrist.

[Reach your first BOND upgrade.]

[Survive an encounter with HIMIKO TOGA.]

[Archive your first CHARACTER HISTORY.]

How… frightening. Any other decisions could have killed her. Was that what it was implying?

The atmosphere seemed to become more enunciated, more beautiful. 

[Tears slide down HIMIKO’s cheeks as she grips your hand tightly. It’s tight enough to hurt, but you did not want to disrupt the touching moment. A wide smile stretches across her face, revealing her fangs again. The wind sends leaves swirling past and her stray hairs bat against the wind. HIMIKO was so happy in the moment.]

An update dinged, and R only spent a moment digesting it, feeling the awe of the moment: [HIMIKO almost wishes you would try and leave her so she could take you for herself.]

Something about what happened was important. So much development and context was missing, but at least she was avoiding worser fates. R felt her mouth move as she answered,” I won’t, HIMIKO. I love you, too.”

[She releases a quiet giggle and tilts her head. Something about the way her body twitches shows how deeply she wanted to pull you in for another hug, but she didn’t. She suddenly looks shy, releasing your hands and fiddling with her skirt and not meeting your gaze.]

[“I’m… glad you’re such a good person, R. This went better than expected, so… I guess I have to admit this was kinda on a whim and that I actually didn’t plan too much time for this. I’m sorry!”]

[HIMIKO bows momentarily. You reach out and pat her head before fumbling with the plastic bags you brought. You hand her some candy and her eyes twinkle with delight.]

“You can take the whole thing. I’ve been meaning to diet.”

[She giggles again and takes it gratefully, face turning redder.]

[“Thank you, R… Even after all these years, you still haven’t changed, huh? I’ll call you later, ‘kay? We should do a shopping trip this weekend!”]

“Sounds good, Himiko. Have fun.”

[Himiko nods and starts off toward the exit of the park. You decide to remain for a little bit longer. The girl continues to check over her shoulder until she disappears from sight, leaving the park to yourself.]

R could not control it as her vision turned to black and the body she once experienced seemed to float in a dark space. Pink words disrupted the darkness.

A dear friend of mine asked me:

I wrote him a lengthy reply which he said he found helpful, so I thought I'd share it.

"Hey friend, it's indeed a dark time. This is fascism which relies on people being frozen with fear, and thinking they are powerless, and thinking they are alone.

One thing I’ve been trying to remind people is there is very little you can do, but that does not mean there is nothing you can do.

The Talmud says that when a wedding procession and a funeral procession come to an intersection at the same time, the funeral must yield to the wedding.

Because above all, we who are alive should celebrate life and being alive, and that we are still here in the world.

So the very first thing you can do is make sure people around you aren’t overwhelmed, that they can breathe, that they have sources of strength, that you find and recognize and allow moments of joy.

The second part is to refuse to be powerless. Look around your community. See the people and institutions that fascism threatens, and take steps to protect them. On a day to day basis, one of the most important ways of defending against what is coming are also some of the most mundane.

Yes, go to rallies and yes make calls and be visible and take actions of direct resistance. That all matters.

But between those moments, if public transit and libraries go unfunded, coordinate to give people rides and volunteer or loan your books. Tutor or pick up trash or perform public music.

Weave the world you refuse to allow to be taken away from you.

And prepare yourself now to help people who will be singled out by malice or neglect. Think about what you can do for them. And meditate on what you will commit to and how much danger you are willing to put yourself in. Will you hide people in your home? Will you stand in front of police?

Will you still speak up if we’re told we’re not allowed to?

These are impossible questions, of course. But we should all ask yourselves in earnest, now, what the person we hope each of us is would do in those situations, and make commitments before those moments come.

Finally, do not allow those around you to believe any of us is alone. Community saves lives. Connection brings hope.

As someone who has spent many years singing with others, I've seen the combination of tone in harmony is only part of the beauty; so much of it is the feeling of shared creation, of being a part of a whole that, once joined, cannot be meaningfully separated into its constituent parts.

Help those who begin to despair understand they are not alone, that you love them and that their existence matters. And do everything you can to prevent the growth of hatred and dehumanization in those around you.

It is so easy to give in to hate, to stop trying to understand the other. Even as resistance may mean bearing witness to true darkness, we cannot stop seeing the humanity in those around us.

This will be hard, but we aren't going to build a better world after this until we're able to do so.

And there will be better things after this. It is on us to lay that groundwork, even now.

And while it's completely unclear today what that will take, the one certainty is that it will require not just hope but faith in humanity to bring that world about.

Faith in other people is an act of defiance, and they can't make you stop if you refuse to.

Yes, but they’re nothing special for the time period. So, hooks and pegs for the lower class, with more aesthetically appealing, comfortable, and complex prostheses for those who can afford it.

If you were wondering about the prospect of meur-powered mecha arms, that’s something that would probably be feasible… in the far future. The field of prosthetics is slow to improve, and there are a few reasons the Tri-Kingdom isn’t actively pursuing refinement:

1. Vestur has been at (relative) peace for a long time.

In the real world, big leaps in the field of prosthetics tend to coincide with postwar periods. This only accelerated in the post-industrial age, when war became grisly enough to yield tens of thousands of amputees from a single conflict. Before that, amputees were sporadic enough to be considered unlucky individuals rather than a specific demographic to be accommodated.

In the setting, war on home soil is out of living memory; the Vesturian peninsula has enjoyed peace for more than a hundred years. When the Tri-Kingdom goes to war, it goes to war off-peninsula on its own terms. A foreign enemy’s most gruesome weapons couldn’t hope to match a red conductor’s fire or a green conductor’s brambles. Simply put, they aren’t getting injured as frequently or grievously as their opponents.

2. The work of white practitioners decrease the number of amputations that need to be done in the first place.

Another common reason for amputation is to control severe infection: if the limb’s too far gone, it’s better to have it cleanly removed. (And essentially get a fresh re-roll on the chance/severity of infection, in any age before antibiotics...)

But white meur allows practitioners to remove damaged tissue, repair flesh, and close wounds instantly. This drastically decreases the risk of infection, salvaging limbs which otherwise might not have ever healed properly. Granted, the patient still needs to have access to a white practitioner and have their wounds seen to in a timely manner, but the end result is still a kingdom where less amputations are performed.

Less, but not none.

3. The amputees of the peninsula tend to be common laborers.

Barring unfortunate carriage accidents, it's rare for a nobleman or a commoner of wealth to lose a limb. Most amputations in Vestur are happening in rural areas, or to patients who had to travel/wait a long while in order to be seen by a practitioner. The cultural image of an amputee in Vestur is probably one of the following:

a Southern sailor who developed gangrene out at sea

a Northern frontiersman, who lost a limb to exposure or had an amputation following a hare bite

a Midland farmer from the rural eastern coast who endured some livestock or farm equipment accident

Of these groups, few have the kind of guilder to motivate innovation. Some of them are lucky if they can afford something like a peg or the hook in the first place - it's a large expense. Some will scrimp to get a peg if it allows them to keep working, but these must be commissioned and fitted. For the most part, the poorest will use solutions the local craftsman can make (like crutches) or simply adjust to life with one arm.

The upper class can commission prostheses that allow some movement, but they’re solely mechanic in nature and custom-made to the buyer. Think of the IRL jointed peg legs invented by Ambroise Paré, or the metal hands of the 16th-18th centuries.

In short: it would probably take a large scale war to spark Vestur’s interest in prosthetics. (Either that, or it would need to become a personal issue for a very wealthy nobleman willing to fund research as a dedicated obsession. And the resulting designs would need to be cheap and easily reproducible by local craftsmen.)

Cassie: Friend, Soulmate, and Self-Regenerating Muse

One of the ongoing themes of my multi-book series is The Muse: the consciousness, archetype, and ways of moving and being of the Muse, who is the Muse and why this energetic matrix is important for every femme to embody for her aliveness and manifestation potential. I made a major edit in this chapter after randomly meeting someone one warm day in Amsterdam recently. The chapter now opens with a story about her.

Cassie is her name and she is stunning. I don’t know what it is about Amsterdam but I rarely—meaning—never —meet people I feel a deep soul kinship with. To be fair, I spend more time biking in Amsterdam instead of walking because the weather is often trashy. But walking is my favorite exercise and I tend to walk a whole lot more in other cities when I’m traveling because, hello, beautiful weather. But on this warm beautiful Sunday in Amsterdam, I joyfully walked everywhere. That’s how I met Cassie, an Indonesian and Surinamese (Black) 38 year old Goddess as she was lightheartedly and confidently sashaying down the street in her short denim dress with peak-a-boo air holes cut out on the sides which illuminated her waist.

She was alone with no cell phone or bag, casually strollin' to her own rhythms while licking a vanilla ice cream cone and delighting in her own innocence and pleasure after walking through the city for hours I would later find out. That is so me—walking for hours in a city and getting lost without a cell phone on me. It was like seeing myself and one of my favorite Minnie Riperton album covers come to life in full-size, "Perfect Angel," the one where she is holding a dripping ice cream cone while smiling so sweetly. Suddenly Cassie made a u-turn and sat on the bench directly across from me. I knew I had to say something to her.

The first thing I said was “you must tell me what you do to have that kind of body.” She responded “you must tell what YOU do to have that kind of body.” She reminded me of me so much—it was dreamy and surreal as watching a Maya Deren “black and white” film yet it was as real as human flesh and a beating heart. You know what her answer was?! “I don’t workout my body. I just workout my mindset and emotional body.” I responded with all manners of celebration “you magical neuroscience quantum theory Gawddddd.” We both laughed! We ended up talking for 4 whole hours— nerding out on everything from quantum physics and metaphysics to speaking about our dreams, love, farm life, and why high-quality, non-extractive penetration (when mutual love and reverence are present regardless of the 'relationship status' between the two) is essential for the healthy shape of a woman’s body and to liberate the deeper coiled wisdom living in her female tissues that no male guru in India could ever possibly understand or teach. It felt like Cassie and I had only been sitting there for only 30 minutes. She was my muse and I was hers. We went on a real journey together.

To open yourself up to The Muse and allow this regenerative consciousness to be your lighthouse in the world requires devotion and a kind of playful endurance and resiliency where you begin to hold a quality of self-worth that does not allow you to give up before the miracles start to happen in your life. Being able to follow a dream -your heart's desires and big visions, capable of trusting the process of what is being divinely asked of you to do and not give up, truly embodying the mindset of a divine being, yield a greater energy of pure power. And what I know about energy is that everything is sourced from it, even though it appears physical to our eyes.

Of course, if you desire to work through the physical/3D world/matter, those things you can logically track and measure, you can. But the truth is that you access more infinite power to shift your body and whole life when you begin to tune into E-N-E-R-G-Y, the subtle, immaterial, and invisible, the spirit that lies beneath the surface, like blessing your food and directing it to travel to the parts of your body you’d like for it to energize or nourish, to make more shapely or healthy. Also, getting into energy work and metaphysics, the essences of your chi, makes you prettier like a beauty ritual, more naturally attractive, magnetic, and wiser. I'm going to be brushing up on research on this and writing it up as best as I can over this week - like some of our disasters (e.g. the close runner up of Xenogears' Disc 2 with nanomolecular gray goo/mutation zombie apocalypse) this is one that's mostly speculative/hypothetical - even the closest analog we have in real life (the Chixculub impact) is something no one living thankfully experienced, although there's smaller impacts that have been (Tunguska, Chelyabinsk) and a lot can be inferred from those and calculations from nuclear weapon yields and the like.

Similarly, no supervolcanic eruption has happened in the real world since Krakatoa, so while it's somewhat more easy to model from living memory than an extinction level asteroid (and we do know more about volcanoes and how they work than asteroids and comets) there has never been a true verneshot within human existence (which would require a lot more power than even Krakatoa provided, it would likely need at least a level of the Toba catastrophe)

Congratulations to the people who voted for Chrono Trigger, and I shall have this up sometime within the week: I'm going to do some more research, update what I know from what real events and science we do have, so while I'm obviously speculating, I'm not JUST regurgitating something like Supervolcano or History Channel Doomsday and covering the same territory they did but for the setting of Chrono Trigger. (And unlike Doomsday, I promise there will be NO CGI butt plugs presented as Balanced Rock at Arches National Park. Not even joking, I just saw that episode again...)

Also, to be truly pedantic, since Lavos is a "living being," this would also qualify as an "alien attack," but I'm going with "asteroid, supervolcano, and verneshot" since that's the apparent effects and how it did its damage - it didn't say release armies or biological substances, didn't intentionally terraform aside from the results of its arrival, didn't take over existing power structures (but did get found/used by them) and seemed to do most of its damage just from being an impacting object and then from coming out from the ground.

Although that might be an interesting point for the write-up about true accidents/purely natural disasters/competing access need events: e.g. disasters that no one could have prevented because everyone/everything involved was operating exactly as intended/just as it does, and the bad consequences could not have been reasonably foreseen/were foreseen way too late, or it wasn't really anyone's specific fault but just one of bad placement for population/competing needs - e.g. in this fictional scenario, a planet devourer that just needs a solid meal, unfortunately the place is populated.

I know that many ancaps/libertarians are pro population growth and pro development, I however think that the global population and megacities are a government abomination. I keep thinking that places like the UK/Beltway/LA of USA are so fucked up because they don't have any real wilderness left. it's just a cultivated grid of human housing, industry, agriculture, the largest undomesticated creature being a racoon or fox or something pathetically small and unthreatening. Even the meme "birds aren't real" I think is a riff on this; you live in a 100% man-made environment, even the birds might as well be government spy robots.

When you fundamentally have to interact with an artificial rules based world all the time you have a tendency to systematize everything, and believe the lie that imaginary things like laws and governments are real physical things, and not just the whims of the police officer on the corner. Somewhat like abuse victims internalize the rules of their abuser to avoid punishment and cope. The urban landscape is the breeding ground of the cancerous and parasitic human survival strategy we identify as socialism/collectivism/progressivism.

The only real laws are those of nature, physics, chemistry, biology, evolution. Humans are an animal and we adapt to our environment, which is a mouse utopia. The modern world is so sick and against nature because our power to wall it out of our lives has created a hubris to rebel against these things. Progressivism in a sense, is rejection of natural order, a rejection of subjection to nature or nature's God. This is how you get to where we are today. I don't need to list the examples, but the unreality of thinking we can abolish scarcity, inequality, sex, the family, etc...

I don't want civilization and cities and humans not to exist. I just want radical concentrations of those things. We had 2.5% the global population in antiquity and still got innovative and talented thinkers that we still discuss today, artists, engineers, etc. These people had ample access to an untamed world, one that was unpredictable, and challenged them.

The urban human is a domesticated one. They have no real self-determination. Without a world unmade by humans, they have no reference for something beyond the imagination of another human, no blank canvas to make their own. Like the shadows of Plato's cave I'd wager it's like a person forced to look into a mirror their entire life. They would have no ability to identify themselves in the mirror as they have no reference that the mirror isn't just the entire world.

Climbing mountains, navigating rapids, scaling rock walls, skiing couloirs... the physical conquest of nature yields a surprise that cannot be claimed from an artificial challenge.

You might just assume they make great films, music, art, thinkers, engineers, and we just don't hear about them because they don't get distributed here or something. No it's just a mass of human flesh consuming the natural world, no ability to reflect and create, just consume.

Almost all of these places import food from the temperate climates of developed nations. A two year breakdown of global supply chains would result in them starving in the millions.

Even here in western civilization we yield the prime 'high-density walkable" real-estate to degenerates via council and section 8 housing.

Government programs of fiat currency, the welfare-warfare state, followed by deindustrialization has resulted in a massive mismatch in human population and economic/environmental capacity. Sure, here's where someone could politely chime in that "humans have infinite creative capacity, we just need to unlock their potential and your Malthusian doomsday is no more" and I grant that to a degree.

But massive declines in human population, the standard of living, and technology are regular historical occurrences. Western science has had an absolute "ick" towards actually understanding and implementing Darwinism towards human populations. Country-wide datasets of IQ probably remain stable due to the continuing rise/Flynn effect of the middle/upper class offsetting the sliding downward of the welfare class. There's no evolutionary biologist who wouldn't recognize that the market economy selects for intelligence and the welfare state was our feeble altruistic effort to carry the "but I did have breakfast" population along with us.

We've had nearly a century and, in some cases of repeated teen pregnancies, 6 or 7 generations who were never asked to provide for themselves meaningfully. They live in an ever more confusing world of late payments, cash advances, welfare office applications, prison stints, evictions, and unplanned pregnancies. Each generation more befuddled than the last. Recent studies show that there have been population bottlenecks through human evolution. In the bronze age as few as 1 in 17 men reproduced at all.

Biological imperatives of reproduction rule over all other sentiments and altruistic masochism. For the silent generation and the boomers, the welfare state was a token price they agreed to pay to keep the peace and they could afford it as they got race-rioted out of their downtown homes into the suburbs. Now the jig is up and millennials en-masse are finding that they can't afford to have kids *intentionally*. They look at their pay stub getting taxed at 40% so that, over at the section 8 housing, "baby mamas" collect government checks for the consequence of a hookup with serial felons, who are also housed and fed with working people's taxes. The boomers made a devil's bargain, they cucked their children!

Now we enter the final death spiral of empires and welfare states: below replacement fertility rates and above GDP national debt!

The group most prepared for the coming calamity, the group who predicted it, and who will emerge as victors are those who are internally pro-growth/pro population but maintain in-group preferences. The stats bear out:

In a couple generations we have gone from 1% in the 70's to 10% in the 2010s and now easily 25% in the 2020's (many libertarians simply don't vote or vote republican). We will replace left-wingers, who only reproduce vampirically via public education, in the next generation. There is hope at the end of this journey but it will be difficult in the mean time. Children Born Now May Live In A World Where The US Can Only Produce Half As Much of Its Key Food Crops

Rising global temperatures are set to devastate food crops across the world, with particularly alarming impacts projected for the United States, where production of key crops could plummet 50% by the end of the century, according to a sweeping new analysis.

Of the many impacts of the fossil fuel-driven climate crisis, damage to the global food system is one of the most terrifying. But the overall impact of climate change on crops — and how much it can be offset by farmers’ adaptations — has been hard to establish and hotly debated.

The new analysis, eight years in the making, is “the first attempt to really tackle both of those problems,” said Solomon Hsiang, a study author and professor of global environmental policy at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability.

The scientists analyzed six crops — maize, soybeans, rice, wheat, cassava and sorghum — in more than 12,000 regions across 54 countries. Together, these crops provide more than two thirds of humanity’s calories.

They also measured how real-world farmers are adapting to climate change, from changing crop varieties to adjusting irrigation, to calculate the overall impact of global warming.

Their findings are stark. Every 1 degree Celsius the world warms above pre-industrial levels will drag down global food production by an average of 120 calories per person per day, according to the study, published Wednesday in Nature.

This will push up prices and make it harder for people to access food, Hsiang said.

“If the climate warms by 3 degrees, that’s basically like everyone on the planet giving up breakfast,” he said. The world is currently on track for around 3 degrees Celsius of warming by the end of the century.

Wheat, soy and maize — high value crops for a lot of the world — will be especially badly affected, the study found.

If humans keep burning large amounts of fossil fuels, maize production could fall by 40% in the grain belt of the US, eastern China, central Asia, southern Africa and the Middle East; wheat production could fall by 40% in the US, China, Russia and Canada; and soybean yields could fall 50% in the US.

The only staple crop that might be able to avoid substantial losses is rice, which can benefit from warmer nighttime temperatures.

Climate Change Threatens Global Food Supply

Most of the world’s staple food crops are projected to suffer substantial production losses by the end of the century as global temperatures rise, even with farmers’ efforts to adapt to climate change, according to a new study.

One of the striking findings of the study is that some of the wealthiest countries are likely to be hardest hit.

Poorer parts of the world, where climate conditions are already fairly harsh, tend to be more adapted and better prepared for the impacts of the climate crisis, Hsiang said. Agricultural systems in breadbaskets such as the US and parts of Europe, however, are optimized for the current temperate climate, he said.

Global warming will be particularly devastating for the US, where it’s projected to reduce yields by 40% to 50% for all staple crops except rice, Hsiang said.

“Places in the Midwest that are really well suited for present day corn and soybean production just get hammered under a high warming future,” said study author Andrew Hultgren, an assistant professor of agricultural and consumer economics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. “You do start to wonder if the Corn Belt is going to be the Corn Belt in the future.”

Lower-income countries won’t escape effects, however. Yields of the subsistence crop cassava will fall in sub-Saharan Africa as the world heats up, a substantial threat to nutrition for some of the world’s poorest people, the study found. “One reason people grow cassava is because it’s pretty robust to droughts, but we see that it is actually still very adversely affected by extreme heat conditions,” Hsiang said.

Shelby McClelland, a researcher specializing in climate change and agriculture at New York University who was not involved in the research, said the study reveals the importance of adaptation but also its limits. “The authors show that current adaptation decision-making is insufficient to ensure future food security,” she told CNN.

Erin Coughlan de Perez, an associate professor at Tufts University who specializes in climate risk management, said one of the study’s limitations is that it does not take into account two major climate adaptations: crop switching or changes to planting dates. In the US, for example, corn and soybean crops have moved northward. These changes could offset more climate impacts, she told CNN.

Ultimately, the findings add to a long list of alarming research about the global food system, said Tim Lang, professor emeritus of food policy at City St George’s, University of London.

“The data pile up. The politicians turn a blind eye… Land use is not altering fast or radically enough. Some pioneers do their best. But the net effect is that the global wriggle room diminishes,” he told CNN.

Hsiang hopes the study will provide more evidence for the urgent need to transform the energy system and the high costs of failing to doing so.

“This is a major problem. It’s incredibly expensive. As a species, we have never confronted anything like this.”

I’ve been thinking about this for a little while — something I’d want to do if I had the time and money would be to design a Motorola 68000-powered tiny (10” or smaller) laptop. Modern CMOS 68K implementations are very power-efficient and decently well-suited to handheld and portable devices (see: TI-92 series), and if combined with a crisp, modern monochrome OLED display, could get you days of continuous usage without needing a recharge! Add a few megabytes of RAM, some peripherals (IDE/CF controller, ISA or S-100 slots, DMA controller, SPI bus, RS-232 port, SD or CF slot, PS/2 port for a mouse, text mode + hires monochrome video card, etc…), and you have a nice, flexible system that can be rarely charged, doesn’t require ventilation, and can be just thick enough to fit the widest port or slot on it.

The main issue would be software support: nearly all existing operating systems that ran on a 68K were either intended for very specific hardware (Classic Mac OS, AmigaOS) or required more than a flat 68000 (NetBSD, Linux, or any other UNIX requiring MMU paging). So, it would probably end up being a custom DOS with some multitasking and priv level capability, or perhaps CP/M-68K (but I don’t know how much software was ever written for that — also, it provides a “bare minimum” hardware abstraction of a text-mode console and disk drive). A custom DOS, with a nice, standard C library capable of running compiled software, would probably be the way to go.

The software question perhaps raises another, harder question: What would I use this for? Programming? Then I’d want a text editor, maybe vi(m) or something like that. OK. Vim just needs termcap/(n)curses or whatever to draw the text, and not much else. That’s doable! You’d just need to provide text-mode VT100 emulation and termcap/curses should “just work” without too much issue. I like writing C, so I’d need a compiler. Now, I’m assuming this simplistic operating system would be entirely written in a combination of assembly language (to talk to hardware and handle specific tasks such as switching processes and privilege management and whatnot) and C (to handle most of the logic and ABI). I could probably cross-compile GCC and be good to go, aside from handling library paths and executable formats that don’t comply with POSIX (I have no intention of making yet another UNIX-like system). Hopefully, most other command-line software (that I actually use) will follow suit without too much trouble. I don’t know how much work it is to get Python or Lua to a new platform (though NetBSD on the 68K already supports both), but Python (or Lua) support would bring a lot of flexibility to the platform. Despite me being a Python hater, I must admit it’s quite an attractive addition.

What about graphics? All the software I’ve mentioned so far is text-mode only, yet historical 68K-based systems like the Mac and Amiga had beautiful graphics! Implementing X11 would be a massive pain in the ass, considering how much it relies on UNIXy features like sockets (not to mention the memory usage), and I really don’t want Wayland to have anything to do with this. I guess I’d have to roll my own graphics stack and window manager to support a WIMP interface. I could copy Apple’s homework there: they also made a monochrome graphics interface for a M68K configured with a handful of MiB of RAM. I could probably get a simple compositing window manager (perhaps make it tiling for a modern vibe ;3). Overall, outside of very simple and custom applications, functionality with real software would be problematic. Is that a big problem? Maybe I want an underpowered notebook I can put ideas and simple scripts down on, then flesh them out more fully later on. An operating system allowing more direct access to the hardware, plus direct framebuffer access, could yield some pretty cool graphing/basic design utility.

I’d need a way to communicate with the outside world. An RS-232 UART interface, similar to the HP-48 calculator (or the TI-92’s GraphLink, only less proprietary) would help for providing a remote machine language monitor in the early stages, and a real link to a more powerful (and networked) machine later on. I think real networking would defeat the purpose of the machine — to provide a way to remove yourself from modern technology and hardware, while retaining portability, reliability, and efficiency of modern semiconductor manufacturing techniques. Giving it a CF or SD slot could provide a nice way to move files around between it and a computer, maybe providing software patches. A floppy drive would be amazing: it would provide a way to store code and text, and would be just about the right storage size for what I want to do. Unfortunately, there’s not really a good way to maintain the size of the laptop while sticking a 3.5” (or worse, 5.25”) floppy drive in the middle of it. To my knowledge, 3.5” floppy drives never got thin enough to properly fit with all the other expansion slots, socketed components, and user-modifiable parts I’d want. A completely solid-state design would likely be the best option.

Global Witness, an international watchdog that monitors natural-resource exploitation, estimates that Myanmar’s jade trade was worth up to $31 billion in 2014, nearly half the nation’s GDP that year. Yet the industry remains shrouded. The ethnic Kachin, though native to the jade hills, control few of the mines. In the 1990s, the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), one of several ethnic armed groups fighting the state in Myanmar’s borderlands, lost ­control of territory around Hpakant. Today most of the big concessions belong to companies or cronies connected to the Burmese military elite. Even as the country has transitioned from five decades of military rule to semicivilian authority, jade has proved the limits of democratic governance. Most stones are smuggled over the border to neighboring China; only a fraction are subject to the tax needed to fill government coffers in one of Asia’s poorest countries. The scale of graft and unaccountability is such that Global Witness calls Myanmar’s jade economy the “biggest natural-resource heist in modern history.” [...] The world’s best jade mines are sealed off to nearly all foreigners. But I managed to access Hpakant to experience a place so beguiling to 18th century Chinese imperial envoys that hundreds perished en route in the malarial wilderness. The scenes before me look like a cross between a magnified ant farm and a Star Wars set. In the distance I spy what appear to be hundreds of tiny insects clinging to a hillside. As we drive closer, I realize they are men. Backhoes, excavators and giant trucks maneuver through a lunar landscape like creatures from an alien planet. Hpakant was once the domain of tigers and verdant foliage. All I see is dust and brown. Where prospectors used to dig by hand, now explosives and heavy machinery, mostly imported U.S. or Chinese brands, are ripping the entrails out of jungle, demolishing entire mountains within months. Already, Hpakant is mostly dead. Fatal accidents mount. Only the biggest, like a November 2015 landslide that killed about 200 miners, make headlines. Township officials have recorded hundreds of deaths in jade-mining accidents over the past year and a half. But locals say the real number is many times that. And in the hills, the Burmese army and Kachin rebels continue to wage war. “If there was no jade, there would be no war in Kachin state,” says Yup Zaw Hkawng, an ethnic Kachin who owned large mining concessions before the Burmese military wrested control of Hpakant. “We are living and sleeping on so much jade in our earth, but jade is Kachin’s curse.” [...] Sequestered from the outside world, Hpakant radiates a gold-rush lawlessness. Unexplained killings occur with regularity. While we are there, a schoolteacher is shot in the head. The day before, a jade trader died from an executioner’s bullet. Last year bombs exploded at the headquarters of two mining companies. In November, a jade scavenger at Hmaw Sisar mine was shot dead by military intelligence or the KIA, depending on who’s telling the story. “There is no real law in Hpakant,” says one of the immigration officers holding us, with a touch of apology. “We don’t know who to trust.”
