Zero Men - Volume 1
Now that I've finished 0-Sen Hayato, this manga was next on the list, another oldie. At least this time it's by the Godfather of all manga, Osamu Tezuka. I think this is his first work I've ever read??? Apparently no one cares about it because there's very little English material on it. Oh well, the main character is cute!
Ch. 1
Omg I'm loving this so far! The art is so dynamic and cute and the dialogue is really colorful too. The protagonist Ricky is adorable ;w; I love his tail.
That was a pretty badass and hilarious opening with the two soldiers fighting a pointless war while also low key bonding over a baby they saved.
Ricky crying when his dad told him his tail was something to be ashamed of broke my damn heart! Glad the dad isn't fully evil though. Just misguided...
Kind of weird that the dad is like "I swear I'll find you a doctor!" Like dude...you've had many years to do that and it probably would have been easier when the kid was an infant.
Ch. 2
Obvious parental death is obvious. Ricky sure got over it quick lol.
So, so far we know that 0 men can survive extreme temperatures, are really fast learners, and have great agility. I think this is an Elfen Lied scenario where they're supposed to be "evolved humans." Making them squirrel like was kind of a weird choice but oh well.
The professor's design where he basically just has a cloud for a head reminds me of Dr. Uranus from Cyborg 009. Peak old dude character design lol.
Losing one dad and then instantly meeting your real dad is pretty wild. The emotional whiplash made it all feel kind of rushed and silly. It's nice that Ricky doesn't feel like a freak anymore tho. Kind of an ugly duckling story.
Ch. 3
Woah, suddenly the story gets very different. Forget the evil scientists, it's time for robot demons apparently! New bad guys are Enma (Buddhist God of Hell) and Satan. Fun for the whole family!
Enma kinda looks like one of the guards from Squid Game lol, simple but menacing
The scene where Enma and Satan make an entire lighthouse disappear and the keep jumps out to save his life was effectively frightening. I wonder if that guy will come back as a witness?
All of Tokyo is ripped apart and put back together in like an hour and everyone just shrugs it off!? I know Japanese people can be complacent, but not THAT complacent!
This chapter felt like an anti-communist message with every house being exactly the same but "something's missing." I googled it and apparently Tezuka was a communist, but only for a short time before he changed his tune, so it's still possible that's what he was going for.
Ch. 4
So apparently the professor is a good guy now (despite first impressions) as he teams up with Ricky to investigate Enma.
We learn that 0-men are closer biologically to squirrels than they are to humans...riiight. The adults definitely looked more squirrel-like at least.
Pretty savage of the professor to shoot up his friend with a gun to "check if he's human" (including a shot to the head!?) Reminds me of the original Stepford Wives when the MC stabs her friend in the crotch.
The way Tezuka draws the prime minister feels very Looney Tunes. He's very rubbery.
Ch. 5
This manga is very text heavy so the average chapter takes me a bit to get through. Luckily, the Japanese has been very easy so far! (Rare for an older manga...)
Ricky and the Professor escape the clutches of King Enma who was planning to kill them if they didn't reveal the whereabouts of the 0 men. They end up in the forest where Ricky finds his mom and dad again. They ask Ricky to return to their country with them but he turns them down because he's vowed to be an "ally of humanity."
I can see why King Enma wears a mask...he's pretty dweeby looking under there. I like his mad scientist hair though. The fact that his face is a little disfigured gives Darth Vader vibes.
Ch. 6
Ricky and the professor try to alert the public about King Enma's take over. People start to be swayed, but then Enma just kills anyone who tries to join the resistance, so they don't get very far. By the end of the chapter Ricky is captured again by another power hungry person after the 0 men. Gdi Ricky...
I know it's for plot convenience but Ricky's tail pops out so easily that you'd think they'd come up with a better strategy for hiding it than stuffing it into his pants by now.
Ch. 7
Ricky splits up from the professor and finds himself captive on a boat. His 0 men parents come to save the day (apparently this was like a 0 men slave ship) and they knock out their captors.
Ricky just did a dramatic goodbye to his parents in chapter 6 and now he's back with them again? Make up your mind, story!
I was proud that I was able to read the kanji èčé·. The videos I've watched of Marine-Senchou (vtuber) helped me out with that one.
We end the chapter in the jungle of the Himalayas. Maybe we'll learn more about 0 man culture?
Ch. 8
Uhhh wtf!? Ricky's dad just dies in an avalanche and they're like "meh, whatever!" Seriously Ricky and his mom recovered from that way too quickly. He might not really be dead, but they believe he is!!
It was cool seeing how the 0 men have been evading humans by living in a place that's only reachable by their species. That felt believable. I bet their land is nicer than the weird place Ricky was living before anyways. No dictators (I hope lol)
Ch. 9
Lol my previous statement was immediately proven wrong in this chapter. Ricky basically went from living in 1984 to Brave New World. I quickly went from enjoying learning about 0 men culture to being like...oh...that's not good.
Kind of confusing that Ricky's mom would intentionally bring her son into this world if she knew how messed up it was? She even is like "here's our apartment where we'll live as a big happy family" but then Ricky learns that kids are separated from their parents super early in this world and sent to live in a children's village. Like...did she not think of that??
Why was chapter 9 like 3 times longer than chapter 8? Well, I've been enjoying the kanji reading challenge. This manga has no furigana...
Ch. 10
Man this story is cyclical. They escape, they get captured, they escape, they get captured. Tezuka also seems to have ditched who I thought was the main villain for now. Will this whole thing be episodic or will we get a real plot?
They come across some yeti in their travels who say "yeti yeti" like Pokémon lol. I wouldn't mind seeing them make friends with all the cryptids, but the visit was very short.
Ricky's mom asking him to shoot her tail off with a gun was pretty dark. It does seem like it would make their lives a lot easier to remove their tails (in hopefully a less painful way), but I guess it's the principle of it.
Dude at they end looked like a Cyborg 009 character with his giant buttons and fancy hair haha.
Ch. 11
And just like that we gain another random party member (and Ricky's mom gains her 2nd adopted son in like 2 chapters). Ricky and Pete bond over their daddy issues.
I was wrong, they did bring Enma back. He reveals that his new, Communist version of Tokyo was inspired by the 0 man way of living, so I guess that explains that.
Like I said, we're going in circles here. Now we're back to looking for the professor Ricky befriended in earlier chapters. After the gang finds a safe place to live, then what? Are they going to save the world from oppressive regimes? Is the goal to just be a normal, happy family?
Ch. 12
So apparently the professor they eventually find is some kind of fake (even though he passed Ricky's needle test). Can Tezuka decide if this dude is a good guy or a bad guy already!?
Kinda funny how when they found a safe place to hide out they're like "now let's confront the evil people!" Like...weren't you running to hide from the evil people? Well I guess heroes gotta hero.
Ch. 13
So now it's doomsday via Mt. Fuji erupting. Although the gang succeeded in destroying Satan's clone factory, they now need to worry about the fate of humanity.
The version of this that I got from Bookwalker is 4 volumes but MAL has it at 7 volumes, so this must be an omnibus. I wonder where the original volume 1 cut off?
That first volume was kind of all over the place. The plot progression didn't feel all that natural, but I think this was one of those stories that was supposed to be a one-off and then got expanded, so whatever. Let's see where things go in volume 2...

Iâve been seeing a lot of thoughts and hc of autistic wylan lately and you seem to also be a fan of the concept. May I ask why? Exactly? I could definitely kinda see it but wanna hear you thoughts youâre always so eloquent
Hey there anon! Sorry for the delayâIâm guessing you already found an answer to this elsewhere while I was off Tumblr for a bit, but just in case, here are my thoughts. This will be heavily personal, but⊠well, you canât very well ask an autistic person about autism and expect neutrality!
Autism is different for everyone and can be difficult to pin down, so while Wylan is arguably autistic, he misses several beats that for me would have made him definitively and undeniably autistic. For example, when the bells start to ring, triggering black protocolâI work in a place with a lot of bells and am frequently caught too close to one and normally press my hands over my ears until itâs over because that sound is like shrapnel raking across my insides. All of them. Not just the ear and brain parts. Wylan doesnât have that sort of visceral reaction, but that may just mean he doesnât have the same sensitivities that I do, or to the same level. He also never, that I recall, eats meatâas weird as that might sound, eating meat is incredibly complicated with heightened sensitivities to taste and texture. Iâm not sure how old I was when I realized it was strange to get up from the table to spit out my food because it viscerally repulsed me. So it might be that Wylan is autistic and has different experiences than I do. Those are things I would include in a story as major indicators of a character being autistic. This might also mean that his fatherâs way of raising him taught him to hide unusual reactions and stimming behaviors. Itâs not that much of a reach to assume a man who tried to abuse the dyslexia out of his son would take the same approach to autism. (More on autism and abuse later.)
So while Iâm going to lay out why I read Wylan as autistic, thatâs why I think itâs valid to read him as not being autistic as well. Both are valid.
A final caveat, I am well overdue for a reread of the books, so I likely left something out or could have found better examples. Take this as a few of my reasons for a personal headcanon. Anyone who feels differently, that's fine! We can each read things our own way :)
1 - Hyperfixation: The way Wylan loves music
Most of the Crowsâ backgrounds color how they see the world: Kazâs shrewdness, Matthiasâs tactical thinking and superstition, Inejâs faith and Suli wisdom, etc. Thatâs a sign of good character writing. But very little of Wylanâs upbringing seems to have influenced how he sees the world. It comes closest when he thinks about how his father would scorn his new friends, but we never see that scorn from Wylan.
The way a hyperfixation feels, itâs like youâve always lived in a close parallel world, never fully been a part of the other one where it seems like everyone else lives, but suddenly thereâs this bright shining piece of your soul laced through the other world. It lets you connect, it lets you exist in their realm, and you canât help but filter everything new through that lens because itâs the brightest, most wonderful thing. (I had been between hyperfixations for a while when I started a new job; six months into that work, I read Crooked Kingdom. One of my coworkers thought I had fallen in love, it was that marked a difference.)
So, combining these: Wylan never really acts like he was part of his fatherâs world, and indeed is in some ways separate from the other Crows, but he parses everything through music, his hyperfixation. He sets words to music to remember them, like he does with the contract. Even his own anxiety is made sense of through music, when in his first narrated chapter, he sets it to music: what am I doing here what am I doing hereâŠ. When heâs overwhelmed, his thoughts are âa jangle of misplayed chordsâ. The Crows have backgrounds that influence how they react to the world, but Wylanâs hyperfixation is his means of experiencing and understanding the world.
2 - Literal thinking: Wylan responds to exact words
In this post, I went into detail on the line where Wylan suggested waking up men to kill them. Wylan is generally unsupportive of killing peopleâOomen, Smeetâs clerk, his father⊠he advocates not-murder in each of these situations. Accepting his aversion to murder, his suggestion to wake men up and kill them seems like a genuine reaction to Jesper saying he doesnât want to kill unconscious men. Wylan takes things literally.
This happens the most with Jesper, probably because Jesper talks to Wylan the most. Nina and Matthias donât really register him past how he might be useful, Inej is usually quite direct, and Kaz is very deliberate when he speaks with Wylan. This really interests me because Kaz tends to vary his speech more than the others do, he adapts more to being around other people. He jokes a little with Jesper, spars with Nina, speaks more openly and more sharply with Inej, and heâs precise with Wylan. Kaz may not know what autism is, but he recognizes whatâs effective with Wylan.
Another example is when Wylan is sketching the Ice Court plans and Jesper says it looks like a cake. There are plenty of valid responses here: pointing out that concentric circles look like lots of things, that itâs just a sketch, telling Jesper to stop looking over his shoulder. Instead, Wylan says that the Ice Court is sort of like a cake. That⊠doesnât sound like something Wylan would normally say. Heâs not addressing the whole situation, heâs addressing the specific words Jesper said.
One of the most heartbreaking examples of this (to me, anyway) is with Marya. Wylan does the same thing with his mother, when she asks if heâs there for her money and says she hasnât got any, and his response is, âI donât either.â We understand as readers that what Marya is communicating here is that she is so accustomed to being utterly ignored unless she is being used, and if she told Wylan that no one visited but to take advantage and she assumed he was here for the same reason, he would say it wasnât the case. But he just responds to the immediate statement.
There are a lot of examples of this.
3 â 0% perception, 100% creativity
Wylan can identify things that donât make sense or that he doesnât understand, but at the beginning of the series he canât make leaps, only ask questions. On the Ferolind, he wonders about the source of water at the Ice Court; though Kaz doesnât say as much, he was clearly wondering, too, because he eventually figured out the underground river. Thereâs an interesting parallel here where, in the beginning of Crooked Kingdom, Wylan asks a question about how theyâll break into Smeetâs and Kaz tells him to use his eyes instead of running his mouthâat which point Wylan is able to figure it out. I donât think this is because he never tried before, though, but because no one ever bothered to teach him. Kaz can be harsh but he gives harsh corrections rather than harsh rejections and Wylan learns from him.
Itâs hard to understand the world for people with autism. The world is designed and run by and for people whose minds are fundamentally different from ours, whose thoughts and experiences are unlike ours. Imagine trying to learn English or Spanish or Mandarin or any other spoken language if your first language was olfactory. Thatâs sort of what itâs like for someone with autism to just get dropped into the world and expected to figure this out.
This can be attributed to Wylanâs upbringing, but I disagree with that because none of the others were brought up in the Barrel, either, and Wylan doesnât understand trade or politics with any special skill. Kaz wasnât born in the Barrel, but he managed to go from âstealing is wrongâ to âwrong isnât my concernâ real quick; Colm Fahey didnât raise his son on gambling and firefights; the Ghafas never expected their daughter to be away from the family. Only Nina has relevant trainingâand even thatâs precious little, she left school way too early. The others figured it out; Wylan needed a bit more help. He also seems surprised by the way his father conducts business. Wylan takes things on face valueâlike the time heâs surprised someone would do something, simply because itâs unlawful. This is something he expresses to a group of gangsters. Heâs never been taught the way of any world and these things are not intuitive to him.
But Wylan isnât stupid.
He doesnât know how to understand the world, but he does understand how things go together. Given a pointy diamond, a handle, and a screw, he cut through Grisha glass. He carries flashbangs and magic napalm, he recreates military hardwareâWylan understands how to make things interact for a specific result. But to me the most telling thing isnât just that he puts together chemical pieces, itâs that he figured out Jesper controlled bullets. He saw the pieces and put them together.
Wylan can understand when things donât make sense, but he canât make sense of themâyet when he understands things at their basic level, he understands them without preconception, for what they are. This is a very autistic way of thinking about things, it goes back to the literalism. He canât make the leaps of logic other people can, but he also doesnât make the assumptions they doââIâve never heard of a bullet Grisha, so thatâs not a thingâ vs âWell Jesperâs an almost impossibly good shot and he controls metal and bullets are metal, so why not?â
4 - Broken brain/body connection
Wylanâs great at chemistry and drawing and playing flute or pianoâbut heâs something of a disaster other times. This is in particular contrast to the other characters, all of whom are physically adept. Meanwhile itâs a challenge for Wylan to climb a rope ladder and he spends a full paragraph trying to figure out what to do with his hands. Itâs easy to say, well, heâs used to a sedentary lifestyle, but at this point heâs not. Heâs worked in the tannery for months. Heâs just physically awkward.
I have less to say on this point only because itâs about something I donât fully understand myself. I donât really understand what it would be like to have a body that just⊠does things? Like normal stuff? Without tics and stims. No idea. Only that Wylanâs discomfort in and seeming lack of mastery of his own body feels very relatable to me.
5 - Abuse
One of the most familiar things about Wylan is how he has been so thoroughly abused and broken down that heâs afraid to do or say much of anything. Again, this is a place his background can be an obscuring factor. Of course Wylan didnât think to blow up the walls when the first met the parem-juiced jurda and got trapped, heâs a spoiled rich kid! Except, he also startled when Jesper said his name later. Wylan didnât hesitate because he was spoiled, he hesitated because he had no confidence.
He also thinks Kaz would laugh at him for playing music at his motherâs grave. Now, personally, I canât see Kaz laughing at Wylanâbeing indifferent, thinking itâs pointless sentimentality, shaking his head, maybe commenting sharply that they need to go if they donât have the time. But not laughing. Kaz is a snarky, sharp-edged jerk sometimes, but he doesnât go out of his way to criticize, he just lets people know when they inconvenience him.
Wylan has been trained to identify attention as negative by an overbearing abusive father who literally saw him as less favorable than a demon. Now, that may have been hyperbole, but Jan criticized everything he could about Wylanâart, music, emotionâand made clear that he was worthless and competent to nothing. (Jan Van Eck can suck a rotten donkey dick but thatâs neither here nor there.)
A lot of people with autism experience levels of bullying that have similar impacts. Or as the kids these days are calling it: we go to school. We go to school where we are weird. Where we look weird and move weird and talk about weird things and thereâs a whole little bevy of asswipes to makes sure we know it. I got teased more for playing Pokemon and sitting alone reading than the kid who pissed himself onstage at assembly. (This was before Pokemon was cool. Iâm old.) And that is not unusual for autistic kids. Itâs also not unusual for this to be compounded by relatives or even parents who may be trying to help but donât understand and can make things even harder.
So we canât read social cues and weâre taught at a vicious age that everything that comes naturally to us is wrong. Imagine trying to interact in society with that background. There is no guide and most advice from neurotypical people isnât actually what they mean. It breaks you down.
Wylanâs anxiety isnât definitive of autism, but isnât something that was incredibly familiar as someone whose neurodivergent experiences created a strong level of anxiety.
6 â High Compassion, Low Social Competence
Wylan isnât very good at making friends. In fact, none of the Crows likes him much in the beginning, and only some of them soften toward him by the end. (Matthias and Nina come to respect his skills as a chemist but neither seems to particularly like him.) But you can see throughout the books that Wylan wants to connect with them and be one of them, he just⊠isnât. Heâs off-beat. Heâs weird. He asks questions and mimics behaviors (trying to be cool and tough like Jesper, saying âmissionâ like Matthias does, imitating Kazâs scheming face) but he doesnât quite get how to adapt.
But he still cares about people. Not just them. Everyone. He cares about the people they leave in the ditch outside the prison wagon, he cares about Hanna Smeet, he cares about Alys. He cares about the people whoâll take a hit from Kazâs sugar caper.
Wylanâs awkward social skills have undeniable big autism energy. I posit his compassion does as well. This is simply who Wylan is, and that means being someone who cares about everyone. I have nothing to back up that this is related to autism. I can say that itâs like me. (Not to brag.) I canât turn off the part of my brain that says everyone matters. Individuals can opt out of that compassion, but they have it by default. Thereâs a certain agony in feeling a pull toward and love for just about everyone and yet an inability to develop meaningful connections with them, and that keen loneliness⊠it just burns.
Again, itâs not definitive of autism, but itâs very similar to an autistic experience.
I said in the beginning that I didnât think Wylan certainly had autism and I stand by that, but he is a powerfully honest reflection of many people who do. So he can be understood to have autism, and thatâs part of the reason some people have that headcanon.

D A Y + T H R E E
As fate would have it, Ginny wakes before 0-700.
Not that she sleeps.
Nightmares, the likes of which she hasnât experienced in years, torment her throughout the night. They leave her scared. Miserable. Guilty. Around 3 AM, she finally reaches for her Dreamless Sleep potion with shaking hands. For more reasons than one, sheâs pleased that Harryâs slept on the couch.
She knows now just how stupid this entire mission truly was. The longer she analyzes it, the more she accepts that her bloody pride got her here in the first place. A chance for a promotion, however small, gave her false confidence in her ability to disregard a decade of sexual tension, all while trapped in close quarters with the person she wants the most.
She hopes Harry makes himself sparse today, though she knows that sounds cruel. But the longer they spend together, the clearer it becomes theyâre on the cusp of something⊠and not something that would look good on a performance review. Heâs been kind and understanding so far, even when sheâs fucked things up. She just hopes she can ignore the most human parts of herself until theyâve dealt with this.
So at half-past 8, Ginny â Jenny â emerges from the house in a bright floral sundress and nude pumps. Were it not for the secret weapon clutched in her right fist, she might have fit in quite well... but Jenny has no intention of fitting in. Not anymore. In three confident strides, she marches across the front lawn, bends down, and spears the prongs of a lurid pink flamingo into the grass.
Yes.
She grins and takes in her work. How ghastly against the backdrop of earth tones! How repugnant!
Ginny steals quick glimpses over each shoulder, only to be met with the eerie, blanketed silence thatâs defined Arcadia since their arrival. No activity at all. Which means sheâll have no issue with the next bitâŠ
She strides to the mailbox at the end of their driveway and gives it a sharp kick. The post slides out of alignment, leaving it askew. Perfect. She returns to the house with a bounce in her step. Living with the twins taught her a thing or two about how to infuriate complete strangers.
She just hopes itâll be enough.
___________________________
As luck would have it, it is enough. Her efforts receive reward more quickly than she thoughtâ more quickly than sheâs been conditioned to expect.
Scarcely an hour passes before she finds the warning she needs. And to be honest, it couldâve been there sooner; she just figured sheâd give it that long before she checked.
Still, itâs not even 10 AM when she opens the door and sees it on their welcome mat: a folded paper with Pee-tri scrolled on the front. She canât help but admire the sheer cheek as she unfolds it; this is the closest theyâll get to a public call-out for the way Harry insists on correcting everyoneâs pronunciation. The message inside doesnât surprise her, either.
Be like the others before dark. Or else.
Ginny glimpses out at the lawn, just to confirmâ and yes. Sure enough. Just as sheâd suspected, the flamingo's gone. The mailbox is straight. Everythingâs back to normal.
She kicks the door closed with a smirk and wonders if theyâre aware of how easily theyâve exposed themselves. Howâ
âWhatâve you got there?â Harry calls from the sofa in the living room. He looks up from his laptop with bleary, dark-rimmed eyes. A wave of guilt washes through her; that sofa clearly didnât get more comfortable overnight. Not that he wouldâve accepted the alternative.
âErm. A letter.â She waves in front of her and walks into the living room. âIâve done a great job annoying them!â
He offers a gentle smile. âAny chance youâll let me know who this âthemâ is that youâre so worried about?â
Ginny rolls her eyes and settles on the other end of the couch. âYou know I canâtââ
âTalk about your work,â Harry finishes, turning back to his computer. âRight.â
âMm. Not exactly that I canât⊠talk about my work,â she ventures, putting her feet up on the white ottoman. âMore like I canât give information until itâs essential knowledge for all parties involved. Based on criteria that I also canât share.â
âSounds like a fun job,â Harry deadpans, still looking at the computer. âBut anyway, if I were to suggest something like⊠I donât knowâŠâ He casually tilts the screen in her direction. âThe fact that Oliver Skinner definitely has a criminal record, and maybe thatâs worth looking into. You couldnât confirm or deny that?â
Ginny just shrugs. âThatâs correct. I can neither confirm nor deny.â
His theory is wrong, of course. Dead wrong.
They wouldnât have sent an Unspeakable and an Auror into the country if this were a simple Muggle murderer. Harry would be able to suss this out, she reckons, if he had more sleep. Poor bloke.
He groans and cracks his back. âIâm starting to understand why Kingâs always so frustrated.â
âProbably because he has to deal with you all the time,â Ginny quips, reaching for a magazine on the floor. Ugh. Of course, itâs only the TV guide, Radio Times. They donât even have a TV, but it came with the Daily Mail on Sunday.
Harry reaches for a glass of water on the coffee table. âFine,â he relents, in between sips. âIâll stay in my lane. But if I get bored, Iâll get tetchy.â He gestures to the computer. âAnd since theyâve given us this laptop, Iâve had time to do a bit ofââ
âTheyâve given me a laptop,â Ginny corrects, arching a brow. âAs youâre well aware, Auror Potter, that is technically the property of the DoM.â She returns to the guide with a shrug. âI just donât care if you use it, mostly because I donât expect youâll be looking up tits all day.â
He chokes on his water; Ginny just laughs and turns the page. Ooh, lovely! Eurovision looks particularly flamboyant this yearâŠ
âYouâre absolutely right,â Harry says, once he recovers. âIâd never look up tits on government property!â He looks affronted as he hands over the laptop, but she knows heâs not done... not when heâs set that up so perfectly. Annnnd sure enoughâŠ
âYou of all people should know I'm an arse-man, Ginny.â
Now itâs her turn for an unattractive snort as he winks over his shoulder and marches upstairs.
When heâs gone, Ginny rolls her eyes and opens her laptop. Heâs an incredible liar on the arse-man front, but it was a good joke. A simple jokeâŠ. one that didnât deserve looking into.
Itâs just unfortunate that canât stop these stupid fucking butterflies from erupting in her stomach like sheâs ten years old again.
___________________________
He launches into the air again, the gardens of his neighbors spanning out in front of him. Each perfectly manicured. Each disturbing in its performative precision. None of this is real; none of this is life.
He pulled out the trampoline after dinner, when Ginny okayed it. Heâs not used to thatâ checking before he does things. This whole exercise has been a great reminder that his teamwork skills are rusty, especially when heâs in a subordinate role. Ron left after their first year to work in the magic shop instead, which only made sense after⊠yeah. Harry draws a deep breath and jumps again. Ron and Hermione havenât been problem-solving in his head for ages. Thereâs been no one to share the burden of choices orâ
âOI!â Oliverâs voice thunders across the garden.
Harry smiles and takes another huge leap into the air. Just in timeâŠ
He rips open the fence door and stomps over, hands balled into fists. Harryâs never seen anyone look quite so furious while dressed in cashmere. And standing beside a trampoline.
âWhat do you think youâre doing?â Oliver hisses, eyes narrowed to slits. âAre you trying to make enemies, Henry? Is this entire estate a bloody joke to you?â
âOf course not!â Harry lands on his bum before he jumps up again. âThis is very serious!â
âOliver!â Sharon wails, hurrying over. âOliver. Please! This reallyââ
âKeep your nose where it belongs, woman,â Oliver snarls, looking at her like sheâs scum on his shoe. âNo one wants your opinion!â
Sharon flinches⊠and this, more than anything else, gets Harryâs back up. âNo need to take it out on her!â he snaps, climbing down from the trampoline. âTalk to me if youâve got a problem, Ollie. Why notââ
But just as Harryâs feet touch the grass, something very weird happens: A dull buzzing fills his ears. Sharon and Oliver hear it too, but unlike Harry, they arenât looking around in bewildered confusion. In a flash, the rage on Oliverâs face transforms into something much different: fear. And as the pressure grows, Harry can only watch as Oliver grabs Sharonâs hand, yanking her from the garden, whenâ
An unmistakable sound replaces the buzzing. A large piece of glass from somewhere in the front of the house shatters on the pavement. And with that, the buzzing stops.
Birds chirp again. Someone laughs in the distance. Harry jabs a finger in his ear, trying to clear it, but it seems Oliverâs returned to his furious state. He lunges towards Harry, a vein ticking in his neck, his hands outstretched as if to push him overâ but Harry doesnât have time for this. Heâs already running around him, bolting towards the source of the sound, his hand inching for his pocketâŠ
Because whatever theyâve got going on isnât related to Oliver, is it? No⊠definitely not. That buzzing was too creepy to be muggle. Harry hadnât really been convinced of the Oliver theory in the first place, even if the wanker has a criminal record for drunk driving. He mostly suggested it to Ginny to see if sheâd give him any information.
Harry spots the broken glass the second he reaches the pavement. The lamppost right outside their house has shattered, light bulb and all. Bits of glass sparkle on the street, but the lamppost is at least 10 feet high. Harry scans around for signs of a ladder, or some form of a projectile⊠any method someone mightâve used toâ oh! A baseball rolls around in one of the open garages across the street. Heâs about to march over and collect it when his conscience stops him.
Because thatâs the definition of circumstantial evidence, isnât it? Harry sighs, rubbing his forehead. Snatching the baseball while working alone is one thing, but itâs not worth risking Ginnyâs job. Especially because he reckons these thoroughly unmemorable homes are each equipped with monitoring systems. At absolute best, that would be⊠awkward to explain to the muggle police, especially without an obvious connection between the ball and the shattered lamppost...
Harryâs just about to turn back inside and write it off a freak occurrence whenâ
Shit.
His breath freezes in his throat.
What the...
He blinks a few times to make sure heâs not imagining it, but no...
Thereâs no weird buzzing this time⊠but something else is happening instead. The grass on the far side of their yard is bulging and curling, right in front of his eyes. The soil creaks as this⊠this mass â a huge sphere of some sort â passes through; bits of dirt fly into the air before settling back.
Harryâs veins turn to ice, his stomach churning. Work has introduced him to new, vile varieties of ghouls and nasties. Heâs been bitten by a leprechaun. Stalked by a vampire. Heâs encountered every disturbing otherworldly menace that one could imagine.
But heâs never seen anything like this.
His only solace is that itâs headed towards Mikeâs empty house⊠this massive, rolling boulder that travels beneath the soil. âBoulderâ isnât exactly the right term, though; heâs never seen a boulder move with a slinking, predatory grace. Heâs never gotten gooseflesh from a rock, no matter how large.
And try as he might, he can only stand there, wide-eyed, his heart racing. Because now he knows for sure what Ginny only alluded to before: whatever theyâre chasing isnât human.
And itâs aware of them.
___________________________
The door creaks open less than five minutes after the glass shatters, but Ginnyâs prepared.
Sheâs standing in the alcove just off the entryway, wand in one hand, fire poker in the other. Itâs probably not the best strategy sheâs ever hadâ but she reckons that if a Muggle were to catch sight of an altercation, it would be an easy memory supplantation. Wands and fire pokers donât look that dissimilar, andâ
âGinny?â Harry calls. Directly into her ear.
Shit! She jumps into the air, the poker clattering to the ground.
âWhen did you learn to move like a cat?â she demands, turning to face him. âYou nearlyââ
âWe need to talk,â he says brusquely. Itâs only then that she takes in his wide, haunted eyes. His white pallor. The way he hasnât even commented on the ridiculousness of her fire poker.
Oh.
Heâs scared.
Scared in a way she hasnât seen him in ages. Maybe ever. Which means he heardâŠ? Shit. Sheâd might as well ask.
âWhat do you ermâŠâ She toys with her wand handle. âWant to talk about?â
Harry heaves a tired sigh. âIâm only going to ask you this once,â he says flatly, rubbing his hand over his forehead. Then he blinks up at her, his eyes pulsing and stern. âWhat the fuck was that?â
âThe⊠shattered lamppost?â she hedges. âIâve no idea. I justââ
Apparently, that was the wrong response.
Harry groans. âYou know damn well I donât mean the bloody lamppost!â he snarls. âI mean that⊠that thing! First the weird buzzing, then whatever moved through the grass! It was like some creepy worm, orââ
âânot a worm,â she amends, staring at her cuticles.
This, too, was the wrong reply; sheâs never seen him go from bewildered to enraged quite so fast.
Harry lets out a furious roar and kicks at an empty box. âThis is why Unspeakables are so fucking annoying!â he shouts, tossing his hands in the air. âYou never fucking say anything â even if it might help someone!â
Pfft! He can do better than that...
âNot sure what you expected,â she deadpans. âWould it help if I were a Speakable instead?â
Harry rolls his eyes and throws himself on the couch. Ginny just leans against the door⊠and waits. She canât say she blames him for being angry. Itâs probably made him feel vulnerable in ways he hasnât in ages.
âThe least you can bloody do,â Harry says, cutting into her thoughts, âis to let me know how to kill it.â He glimpses up at her, his chest still heaving. âBecause if anything happened to youâŠ.â His hand curls around his wand, his voice dropping to a near-whisper. âWe both know Iâd never forgive myself.â
Fuck.
Her heart clenches; as embarrassing as it is, tears sting the backs of her eyes. She wasnât expecting that⊠but it makes perfect sense. Heâs not angry because heâs vulnerable; heâs angry because he doesnât know how to protect her.
Because heâs Harry.
Her Harry.
And try as she might, she canât deny that. Heâs hers⊠even though now heâs broken and angry and scared and alone. Which is probably why she loves the fucking fuck out of him.
No.
She stops herself, squeezing her eyes shut. Mission. Mission. Theyâre on a mission.
Right. She clears her throat and steps forward, two papers clutched in her hand.
âWhatâs that?â Harry grumbles as she hands them over. He scans the pages, brow furrowing. âSugar⊠engine oil. Red Dye 40. What am I supposed to do withâ?â
Ginny smiles and tries to make this easy. âItâs the report from the necklace. The thing that was on Mikeâs medallion⊠itâs rubbish. Not blood, not some ghost slime. Itâs just a weird mixture of types of rubbish.â
She shouldâve figured he wouldnât find this significant.
âWhat a brilliant scientific discovery.â Harry tosses the paper to the side. âHermione would be thrilled.â
Ginny gnaws at her cheek, choosing her words carefully⊠but if heâs already seen it, if heâs already heard it, surely thereâs no harm...
Harry rises to his feet and takes a step closer until heâs towering over her, all warm and brooding. They arenât touching⊠not exactly. Heâs just hovering close enough to give her strength, whether he knows it or not. When she finally gets the nerve to look up at him, his green eyes are swirling with more pain than rage. Truth be told, she prefers the rage. âI deserve to know,â he says thickly, like heâs suppressing something in his throat, âwhat the fuck is going on.â
Ginny breaks their eye contact. Some of this she hasnât even shared with Attica yet. Sheâs violating about a million protocols by telling Harry first, but if theyâre together on a missionâŠ
âItâs⊠not what we thought. Not what I thought,â she admits softly, after a moment. âWe came out here under the assumption of chasing something from the Thought Chamber. Something that erm⊠may have escaped. During a routine experiment.â
Heâs not impressed, though. âYeah,â he says, arching a brow. âI gathered all of that from your intro with the camera, thanks. Do you ever plan on telling me anything new?â He jerks his chin towards the window. âBecause youâve sure as hell never mentioned Evil Grass Monster Experiment #6, and that may have been helpful to fucking know before I saw it.â
Oh, for fuckâs sake!
His attitude is more infuriating than his actual words, but she lacks the patience for dealing with either. The bloody nerve, to act all impatient with information thatâs kept secret for a reason...
âI donât have to tell you shit, actually,â she says, crossing her arms over her chest. âAnd in case youâre unaware, I can protect myself.â
Harry pulls back with a laugh, but this one is cruel. Dark. The sort sheâs never heard from him before. âMakes sense,â he says with a fake grin. Then he taps her on the nose. âBecause when that thing outside inevitably kills someone else, we all know how well youâll manage the guilt.â
Ouch.
She reels back, stung. Heâs got to know thatâs a low blow. Younger Ginny would have Bat Bogeyed him into oblivion, but sheâs better now. Sheâs changed.
At least thatâs what she tells herself as she glares at him, her hands fisted so tightly they turn white. âSay what you mean,â she manages several moments later, when rage isnât clawing at her chest. âIf youâd like to rehash our breakup, Auror Potter, Iâm all ears!â She gives her best impression of an icy smirk. âThis isnât exactly professional⊠but then again, when have you ever been?â
Harry looks like heâs going to respond, but a loud vibration starts in his back pocket. âFuck!â Now itâs his turn to leap into the air before he realizes itâs just his wand. And really, sheâs tempted to laughâ but the look on his face helps her put the pieces together.
Because if his wandâs vibrating, that means itâs an emergency; only department heads can summon their employees like that. Theyâre the only ones with access to that sort of technology, not that sheâs really interested either way.
âItâs King,â he mutters. Sheâs about to get on him for stating the obvious, but when he peers at her again, his face is filled with such timid yearning that she can only see the 11-year-old boy on the train platform. âCan IâŠerm. Use your mobile?â
Fine. Ginny nods towards the bedroom, her head still spinning. Sheâs still a bit angry with him, but heâs so fucking broken. They both are. And besides, theyâve got bigger problems. What could possibly have King so worried that heâd call Harry from a mission? The man is unflappable.
Harry returns a minute later, his face stony, jaw set. In another life, she mightâve seen the bulge in his pocket and asked if thatâs just her mobile, or if heâs happy to see her.
Instead, she tucks her hair behind her ears like the seasoned professional she is. âThereâs no reception inside,â she points out. âIâve had luck calling Attica from up the street, right at the corner. Just watch out forâŠâ
Harry smirks. âGrass monsters?â
Ginny draws a breath to consider her options. She could keep him in the dark forever, but isnât that the whole point of this assignment? To learn? Itâs time for the truth, she reckons...
âItâs erm. Itâs called a tulpa, actually.â
His eyes light up at this. âA tulpa?â
Ginny shifts her weight and searches for the right words. âItâs a⊠itâs sort of like an evil imaginary friend, created by a group of people to do their bidding,â she explains, reaching for the discarded papers. âThey come from the material of whateverâs underground. Iâve only heard of creatures made from clay or water, but since this village was built on a rubbish tipââ she flicks the papers with her fingersâ âthatâs our guy!â
She can almost see the gears spinning in Harryâs head as he studies the far wall. âSoâŠâ he says slowly, still peering off, âitâs basically an evil dump monster, made of rubbish, that can murder people.â
A laugh slips past her lips. It sounds a bit dumb when he puts it that way. She clears her throat and continues. âI was wrong because itâs not something thatâs escaped, more like something thatâsââ
âFormed,â Harry finishes quickly. For the first time all week, he sounds intrigued. Like heâs happy to be here. âSo⊠theyâve made it to keep order, then?â
âIt would seem so.â She shrugs. âI⊠honestly donât know. But between the weird buzzing and the rubbish, itâs the closest match weâve got. According to the system database, anyway.â
Thereâs another pause as Harry mulls this over. âSo, how do we get rid of it, then?â
How fucked up is it that her heart warms at the way he says âweâ?
Ginny brushes that aside. âConsidering the mask in Gogolakâs house and the way theyâve made a point to tell us heâs in charge, Iâd say heâs the one we need to get rid of.â
Harry crosses his arms over his chest but doesnât object.
âOr at least⊠knock him totally unconscious,â she adds, swallowing; Gogolakâs a wanker, but sheâd rather not kill him, either. âBeyond just being asleep. Because he sleeps at night, but the tulpaâs still here, which means he needs to be down for the count. Comatose, even.â
Harryâs wand buzzes again. Ah, shit; in all the hubbub, sheâd forgotten about that.
Concern floods Harryâs face. âGive me five minutes.â He blinks. âOk?â
She waves towards the door. âDuty calls.â
He gives her a weak smile and turns away; she begins the trek upstairs to send Attica an email update.
âGinny?â
She stops to look down at him. Harryâs paused, halfway out the door. âThank you,â he says softly, meeting her eyes. âAnd⊠Iâm sorry. For everything. Ok? Iâll always, ermâŠâ
But she canât right now. She actually fucking canât.
âLater,â she whispers, nearly begging. âPlease. Letâs do this later.â
Because of course she loves him.
Sheâs always fucking loved him, even though thatâs changed forms. Itâs shifted. Itâs evolved. He feels the same way⊠she knows heâs bloody feels the same way. She just doesnât have the resources to deal with whatever this fuck is reigniting, right in front of her eyes, as the tulpa dances in the back of her head.
Luckily, he understands. Harry just swallows again, nods at her, and heads out into the night.
___________________________
As it would turn out, he was wrong about the identity of the summoner.
âGreat news!â Hermione announces on the other end of the mobile. âMLE found Yaxley. He was hiding in a cave in Romania, just like you said.â
Harry snorts; he wishes that gave him more pride. âWell, if youâd listened to me months ago, thenââ
âThe important part is that we have him,â Hermione says, cutting across. âWe need you back ASAP to prep for witness questioning. Youâll take the stand, of course. The trialâs set to start next week!â
He can practically hear her bouncing with excitement. Very little brings her more joy than trials of former Death Eaters.
âErm⊠about that.â Harry rubs the back of his neck. âWeâre actually right on the cusp of something here. Iâm gonna need a couple more days to wrap things up.â
âReally?â Hermione sounds surprised. âKingsley and Robards said youâd be pleased. Said you found this mission as useless as they did.â
Fuck, he was such an arse.
âWell, things⊠changed,â he offers lamely. âItâs going really well. This mission is so important to her. Iâd just hate to leave at the last minute.â
âOhhh?â Hermione draws out the word in a way that suggests she finds herself quite clever. Even before she asks, he knows what sheâs on about. âHowâs it going with Ginny, then?â
Harry rolls his eyes. Her coy prodding is obvious, even over the phone.
âAs I already said, itâs going well,â he replies flatly. âWeâre a great team. Always have been.â
But she canât let him have that one, can she?
âWell⊠not always,â Hermione allows. âAfter Percyââ
Harry groans. For fuckâs sake, whatâs her obsession with stating the obvious? âYeah, well,â he retorts, âIâd like to know who you think did well after that, especially sinceâŠâ
He trails off with a sigh.
Especially since what, exactly?
He toys with the fraying ends of his hoodie string.
Especially since Ginny was the last to speak with Percy? That she still carries the weight of the guilt for what she said that night? That sheâs never admitted it, but that he suspects her choice to become an Unspeakable was influenced by the things she wishes she could un-say?
Harry makes a face. Thatâs corny as fuck, isnât it? What a thing to pull from his arse...
Hermione interrupts his thoughts for a bit of bragging. âWell, Ron and I have done just fine.â
He can almost imagine her staring at her engagement ring in dreamy affection. The mental image makes his reply sound more bitter than he intends.
âWell,â Harry snaps, âRon wasnât the last person to speak with Percy. So Iâm not sure how you could compare the two, really.â
Shit.
The silence on the other end tells him he needs to apologize, even if itâs true. Fortunately, Hermione gives him an easy out. âAnyway.â She clears her throat. âIâll give you until tomorrow night, but we really need you the following day. If you havenât settled this, weâre swapping you out. Got it?â
Harry sighs. Heâs exhausted, but this couldnât possibly take much longer. Ginnyâs more or less got the proof she needs now. They just need to confront Gogolak, knock him out, andâ
BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.
Harry cranes his neck towards the source of the noise. Huh⊠weird. Far up the street, flashing lights tip him off. Thatâs definitely Oliverâs Audi, the one parked in the driveway directly beside theirs. Itâs in utopia blue with a metallic finish, a detail Oliver probably mentioned at least fifty times the other night. Then, while Sharon and Ginny were out walking the dog, Oliver began a mind-numbing lecture on the carâs exact miles per liter. Harry was a bit drunk, which is probably why he interrupted to ask a much more important maths question: How many blow jobs per week is too many, exactly?
Even from a distance, Harry can tell that Oliverâs nearly the same shade of murderous red now; he storms from the house and turns off the alarm with his key fob. But then he pauses, glancing around like somethingâs spooked him. He must decide itâs not that significant, though, because he huffs back inside soon enough. Fucking wanker...
â....Harry?â
âSorry!â Harry shakes his head. âYeah, sorry, that works. See you then, Hermione.â
âCanât wait!â she trills. He doesnât need to see her face to know sheâs smug and grinning.
___________________________
Two minutes after Harry leaves, Ginny feels it again: that same sensation she experienced while walking Captain Bone.
Sheâs sitting at her laptop when it starts⊠this deeply unsettling shift. It stands the hair up on the back of her neck. She rushes to the window on instinct, but just like before, everything outside looks the same. Thereâs no âmoving grass monster,â as Harry called it. Not yet, at least.
Still, she canât deny itâs growing louder. Getting stronger. And now that sheâs felt it for a bit longer, she can put more words to it. Itâs like sheâs plummeting through the absence of sound; like all the windâs been sucked from the air. Itâs a building pressure, a mounting unease, and before she knows it, her whole body starts to shake.
Then two things happen in quick succession: that weird feeling stops, and a car alarm begins to blare in the distance.
Weird.
She shudders. This whole thing is so fucking weird. Weird is her job, and this place is still Very Fucking Weird. Seriously, who enjoys living here? Sheâs reaching for her wand, just in case, when the front door slams open.
In retrospect, itâs a blessing she knows Harry as well as she does⊠because she can tell that those heavy, clobbering footsteps donât belong to him. She knows heâs not the one drawing deep, ragged breaths as he marches up the stairs.
She hides around the corner of the bedroom, her heart racing, and goes through a mental list of spells she might use. Shield charms. Enchantments. The buzzingâs stopped, so this probably isnât the tulpa⊠but who else would be here? Gogolak? It sounds more human thanâ
âJenny?â a deep, soothing voice asks. âAre you in here?â
Her breath freezes in her throat. Sheâs only heard that voice once before⊠but itâs so similar to her former life that she identifies it at once.
âMike?â A wave of relief washes through her. She shoves her wand into her dress as she comes around the corner. Sure enough, there he is, in the flesh. Mike Snodgrass. A man she presumed dead days ago.
âHi!â Mike pants. He cracks a smile. âIâd offer to shake your hand, but.â He winces, wiping a palm on his ripped khakis. âBeen hiding!â Fuck. His whole outfit (yellow Polo, khakis) is the same he wore days ago to unload their boxes, except now itâs filthy. Stained. Like heâs been living beneath cars and inside drains. Heâs just missing his Saint Julian medallion, which sheâs sent to the Ministry.
Ginny feels sick. She wrote him off as dead so carelessly...
âIâve been trying to take it down,â he adds earnestly, peering at her. His cheeks are caked in something red and grimy, the same stuff she stuffed into her bra. Heâs been tailing the tulpa, she realizes, her stomach plummetingâŠ
Except heâs got no clue what heâs doing.
âI was about to leave the development, to just run away, but thatâs when I figured out it was coming for you two!â He shudders, closing his eyes. It feels like heâs been waiting a long, long time to say this. âAnd Iâve been aimless without Jess in the first place. So what was the point in leaving, really, if I could saveâŠ?â
He trails off, clearing his throat; when he looks up at her again, thereâs a flash of annoyance in his eyes. âIâve been leaving clues, though! Why didnât you listen?â
âClues?â Ginny sounds like sheâs a million miles away.
Mikeâs nearly pleading now. âYou had to go and kick the mailbox and stick the flamingo in the grass, didnât you?â He raises his pointer finger. âAnd even though I left you a note, you had to make it even worse! It only attacks when the sun goes down, see.â
âYou⊠you left the note?â she whispers. She was so certain that it was from Gogolak...
But Mike proceeds in such a rush itâs clear he hasnât heard her. âIt was about to get Henry by the trampoline, so I threw the baseball as a diversion. I broke the lamppost, tooâ which worked. For a second,â he adds hastily, glancing over his shoulder.
âHow did you also set off the car alarmâ oh.â Her headâs still spinning. âBuddy system. Right.â
Mike dangles a keyfob. âCovenant rules. Stole the spare off Jane.â He glances into the hall again before whipping back to face her. âItâll need a sacrifice tonight, though,â he adds grimly. âAnd every night, until you all have perfect behavior. It was coming for you earlier, see. We arenât meant to be outdoors after dark without a permit for dog-walking, so.â He shrugs. âIf thereâs an unapproved disruption like a car alarm, it knows just where to hunt.â
Itâs then that the final pieces of this dreadful puzzle slide together in her brain. âCaptain Bone,â Ginny breathes; she swears a feather could knock her over. âHe was the first since we arrived. Punishment for us sticking out.â
âI couldnât save him,â Mike laments. âIt came up and snatched him. So I threw in my medallion, right after his collar, just to make them think I was already gone.â
âThatâs⊠that was brilliant,â she admits, biting her lip. âThank you. You didnât haveââ
âNah,â he says firmly. âI did. For starters, you remind me so much ofâŠâ He stops mid-sentence, an odd expression on his face.
For a second, she thinks heâs being sentimental, but then she feels it too.
Shit.
The hairs on her arm stand up. Itâs back⊠that weird way she felt before. Like the airâs sucked from the room. That creeping, clawing silence. This time, though, it only gets louder, louder, louder, until sheâs throwing her hands over her ears, all hope of self-defense forgotten.
But Mike knows what heâs doing. He knows exactly what heâs doing. She doesnât have the chance to object or get her wand before heâs ripping open the closet door and throwing her inside. Ginny opens her mouth in a startled cry, but itâs like sheâs screaming underwater, the sound distant and distorted. Mike slams the door closed with her inside and stomps to the center of the roomâ but now the thundering, roaring wind is causing her physical pain⊠itâs so loud now that it reverberates in her chest, so loud that her hands shake as she reaches for her wand at long last, but fuck fuck fuck, itâs too lateâŠ
Itâs too fucking late.
Because Mikeâs made a choice. One he canât take back. He just stands in the middle of the room, puffing out his chest, offering himself as the proud sacrifice, even as the noise grows so loud that Ginny screams her throat raw.
She feels it enter the bedroom, this looming, shifting massâ but by then, sheâs certain her ears are bleeding, her eardrums bursting. Her whole body rattles and shakes as she peers through the slats in the closet door, but sheâs frozen. Stuck. Miserable. She couldnât cast a spell if she tried⊠even as the tulpa oozes into the room, lunges itself back, and swallows Mike with a sickening squelch.
Even though the slats of the door, Ginnyâs sprayed with blood. Covered. And sheâs dizzy now⊠so dizzy. A drop of blood trickles into her eye; she reaches up to wipe it from her face, and itâs only then that she hears her own screams again. They reverberate through the small space, anguished and pleading, so loud that sheâs certain someone up the street could hear, but she doesnât care. She doesnât fucking care. She just screams over and over and over, her nails clawing at the walls, until the world slips away into darkness.
___________________________
Blood.
Itâs the first thing he smells as he charges up the steps. His chest squeezes, his eyes water, his head pounds over and over again with one word: No.
No. No. No.
Not Ginny. It canât be.
But almost as soon as he smells the blood, he hears her screaming, and yes! His heart soars. Screaming is good; screaming means sheâs alive and breathing andâ
Fuck.
His dinner rises in his throat as he steps into the bedroom. He smelled the blood from the steps, he hadnât expected⊠this much. It always takes him aback, exactly how much blood is in one human body, and heâs certainly never seen it sprayed, all over the floor⊠covering the walls. Covering the closet, even, where Ginnyâs still screaming.
He flings open the door, thinking heâs prepared for what he might see. Somehow, though, none of that measures up. Because heâs dealt with tears in his line of work⊠but heâs never, ever seen her so broken. His chest clenches when he takes her in. Her perfect suburban dress â the yellow floral one, the one he liked so muchâ is now red and grimy, caked in blood, as Ginny rocks back and forth on the floor, sobs wracking her body.
Bloodâs covering her face, too, and her arms. Dried trails of it have crusted around her eyes, like sheâs fallen asleep wiping them away⊠or perhaps lost consciousness. The thought is too terrible to bear. He kicks the door open completely and brings her into his arms in one fell swoop.
She melts against him, her voice raw and broken. âH-Harry!â she manages. âP-please! I need-I need!â She begins to shake, pressing her face to his chest.
âA shower,â he says firmly, stepping into the en-suite. âYou⊠you just need a shower. Ok? And maybe some calming draught, Iâve got some in my luggage, andââ
âNo!â she cries, shaking her head. Her eyes are wide and filled with horror. âDonât⊠donât leave. Donât leave me, Harry, please!â
âI⊠ok,â he allows, carrying her to his luggage to retrieve the bottle. She clings to his neck as he reaches for it, but she weighs next to nothing. Fuck, sheâs so thin⊠heâd just been too busy eyeing her up to realize exactly how thin. What a complete wanker.
Itâs not difficult to unzip the suitcase with one hand and pass her the bottle. âTake this,â he urges, thrusting it into her hands. âPlease, Ginny. Youâll feelââ
Sheâs already downed it before he gets to the end of the sentence. She tips her head back, drawing air into her lungs. âThanks.â Her voice is still hoarse. Ragged.
âShower, then,â he murmurs, walking her into the bathroom. He feels her start to relax against him, her body growing looser, as he opens the curtain and turns on the tap.
âThanks,â she whispers again, her head tucked beneath his chin. His fingers itch with restraint; heâd do anything, he thinks, to hold her against him. To press a kiss to her temple. To tell her he loves her and that sheâs beautiful and perfect and heâs sorry, so sorry, that any of this happened andâ
She peers up at him, her eyes more focused now, less wide-eyed and horror-struck. âWould you stay here?â she asks, biting her lip. âWhile I shower? Just so Iâm notââ
ââCourse.â Harry swallows, putting her on her feet. She lands with unintentional grace, one foot after the next.
âAnd can you⊠erm.â She turns her back to him, lifting her hair above her zipper. His hands shake as he reaches for the clasp. He knows the exact shape of her back as he slides it down, over the middle bump of her white bra strap. He nearly unstraps that for her, too, before he catches himself. It reeks of intimacy, doesnât it? All of thisâŠ
His eyes linger on the soft swell of her bum before he turns around, self-disgust hammering in his throat.
âIâm⊠Iâm sorry,â he adds feebly. He balls his hands into fists as her dress hits the floor⊠followed by her bra. And her knickers.
âNot your fault,â she croaks, stepping into the shower. He smiles, his glasses fogging up as he moves to sit on the closed toilet seat. Even covered in blood and traumatized, she can't bring herself to blame him.
She finishes several minutes later.
âErm⊠towel?â She shuts the water off. âCould you?â
âSure,â he soothes, thrusting one through the curtain. âDâyou want me to leave, orâŠ?â
Ginny manages a weak snort. âNah. Nothing you havenât seen before.â
He chuckles at the door as he turns around again. Sheâs right, of course; he knows every bloody inch of her⊠but itâs not quite the same now.
Thereâs a tap on his shoulder. He whips around to face her. Admittedly, she looks⊠better. The bloodâs gone. Her eyes are still red-rimmed from sobbing, but sheâs looking a bit less like a woman who witnessed a death. Which reminds himâŠ
âErm. Give me a second to get it all cleaned up?â
Ginny shudders and settles on the toilet seat; he immediately kicks himself for asking. âYeah,â she says a moment later. âJust⊠come get me, ok? When youâre done?â
He nods.
___________________________
It canât be later than 10 PM when he finally carries her to the bed, still wrapped in a towel.
Heâs exhausted from the nights on the sofa, but he knows sheâs worse off. Heâs cleaned the bedroom fairly well, he thinks, considering. Thereâs a rust-colored stain above the closet that he reckons wonât go anywhere anytime soon. He just hopes she doesnât see it.
He rests her on the duvet surface, fully prepared to head downstairs for the nightâ but the pleading look on her face informs him heâs got other plans, instead. So without sharing a single word, he spreads his palms, lies beside her, and waits.
It comes eventually, as he knew it would. One person canât deal with all that, see all that, without eventually cracking. And as a fellow fucked-up individual, he would know.
It starts as simple tears, ones that he wipes away. It progresses into sobs⊠full-body sobs. The sort he heard coming up the stairs. Heâs surprised sheâs got any left, but Ginnyâs always been the sort to keep him on his toes. And just as her water-dark hair starts to dry and sprout red tendrils, he faces the thing he expected least of all: a kiss.
She starts softly. Slowly. Her lips so tender and soft that he forgets everything. She moans against his mouth, her whole body leaning into it; heâs instantly reminded of how much heâs fucking missed her. How lonely heâs been. How could he have forgotten the tiny mewl she makes in the back of her throat as her tongue parts his lips? He mustâve blocked it out, he realizes, as she begins to slide her body against him, panting, as she tips her head back. His lips trail down her neck, nibbling and biting, as she grips his arms and hair and bum. Because if heâd remembered all of these little details, heâd have gone mad long ago.
Heâs throbbing hard by the time he gets to the tail end of her towel, which brushes the tip of her thighs. He tries to adjust himself, toâ
âYou can take it out, you know.â
Oh. He blinks up at her, his breath freezing in his throat. Sheâs peering down at him, her lips red and swollen.
âI know youâre hard,â she adds, her voice still raw. âSo if itâs uncomfortable⊠take it out.â
He arches a brow from his position at her thigh. Heâs about to retort with something snappy. Something that might keep them bantering for ages. But Ginny has no patience.
âPlease.â Itâs nearly a command. She blinks down with glassy eyes, her lips swollen. âI want you, Harry.â
Fuck. He groans, rubbing his cock against his palm to relieve some of the pressure. It doesnât help for long, not that it matters; heâd rather focus on her, anyway. So with a slip of his fingers, the towel opens. She releases a breathy moan, tipping her head back.
Naked.
Sheâs finally naked. In front of him. His breathing grows ragged, his eyes scanning the territory somehow both totally familiar and completely new. She is thinner; he was right. Her hip bones jut out now, her stomach more sunken. But most of her is the same. The smattering of freckles on her chest. The way her breasts have puckered and darkened, the way her chest is rising and falling so fast. The thatch of dark red hair at the apex of her thighs.
âWell,â she quips. He blinks up at her as she reclines on her elbow. âAre you going to fuck me, Harry, or just stare all day?â
With that, he removes his glasses and gives her a smirkâ her only real warningâ before he kisses her one more time, just as his fingers spread her thighs.
She opens beneath him with a breathy sigh. Fuck, sheâs so wet⊠he groans into her mouth as he dips his fingers further and further down. Sheâs dripping by the time he finds her clit⊠by the time he begins to swirl in tight circles. Clockwise. The pattern that screams of such intimate familiarity that itâs as if the years never passed.
Heâs scarcely done anything, but sheâs already writhing against his fingers, arching her back. âPlease,â she slurs after a minute, âput them in.â
Heâs never been one to deny her, has he?
Itâs like muscle memory how quickly he finds his face between her thighs instead. He spares a moment of self-indulgence as he closes his eyes, breathing her in. She smells like home. She always has. Itâs comfort⊠but more than that, itâs proof. Proof she wants him as much as he wants her. Itâs why he stuffed his face in her knickers whenever he got a spare moment on the Horcrux hunt: one hand on that black lace, the other pulling at his cock. Itâs bloody erotic, seeing proof of how much she wants him⊠but itâs more than that.
Itâs love.
And despite all the things heâs forgotten tonight, heâd never forget this. He presses two fingers inside her, his hands shaking, and lets his body do the rest. Fuck, heâs missed this. She cries out above him, her hands grasping at his hair, tugging him closer. Heâs never forgotten this⊠the way she tastes. The way she smells. The right way to run his tongue against her clit. Exactly how many fingers she needs, pressed against her just there⊠crooked in a certain position⊠just as she begins to thrust herself up and down on them, her cries growing louder, more insistent⊠and yesssss, there it is, sheâs right there, right fucking thereâ
âHarry!â Her hair rubs against the pillow with abandon. âIâm⊠Iâm so close,â she pants, her body starting to shake.
âCome for me,â he commands, his cock fit to burst, his face slippery. âCome for me, Ginny.â
He returns to her clit for a split-second before she says the words that change everything.
Her whole body tenses, a blush spreading up her chest. âI love you!â she cries, her voice strangled⊠and with that, sheâs coming, clenching around him, her body shaking as he rides her through it.
What he doesnât tell her is that he comes, too. The second those words wash over him. Those fucking words that prove heâs fucked up, fucked up, fucked up⊠but he canât exactly help that, can he?
He just shoves his face into the duvet, thrusting his hips once, twice, and with a grunt, heâs off. His cock tightens and bursts, filling his boxers. Soaking through his jeans. He pulls back, dizzy, when the clenching finally stops.
Luckily, she seems too distracted to notice. Ginnyâs half-asleep as he rises from between her thighs, pulling the blanket over her. He presses a kiss to her temple and makes quick work of removing his soggy clothes. Fairly embarrassing, this. Like heâs 16 again and rutting on the lawn.
He mutters a quick cleaning charm and changes into basketball shorts before settling down beside her in bed⊠making sure heâs on top of the duvet.
But as he drifts off, thereâs something far less sentimental that hammers through his chest: They need to get their shit sorted.
Before he ever, ever lets that happen again.

How do you get people to always buy your dragons? Genuine question
i was gonna say something like âhaha i have no fucking clueâ but that would be a lie i think about this a lot actually so i might have some insights iâve been breeding dragons as my primary activity on FR since i started playing FR (in 2014...) and people have only started actually buying dragons from me consistently like, 5-6 months ago, despite 2-3 attempts at running a genuine hatchery onsite that always died due to lack of interest & not really being worth the effort.Â
so ive thought a lot about what the hell is happening now and why my dragons are suddenly consistently selling and I think ive come down to these being the main points of advice i can give: 1. make friends! be friendly! donât be weird! be a cool and fun person to interact with! 2. post consistently. post your dragons consistently. post about other stuff consistently. just be an active member of the community 3. POST YOUR SHIT IN THE â#FLIGHT RISINGâ TAG. THIS IS PROBABLY THE ONLY TRUELY HELPFUL THING I SAY IN THIS POST 4. make pairs that are sexy as hell and be openly proud of them. make dragons and pairs that you like, not what you think will necessarily sell. people can tell when you like stuff and being genuinely passionate about something, whatever the fuck it is, will get other people passionate as well longer versions/explanations under the cut because man this got a mile long. i wasnât kidding when i said i think about this a lot and i am so sorry if you wanted something concise and useful
1. to be a little glib. i am mutuals/friends with more clout in the FR community than I do kjdshfdsfdhjhkfdf shoutout to everyone who draws their dragons really good on a regular basis because i am riding on your coattails to sell my dragons. i love you this was never my intent, obviously! DO NOT BEFRIEND PEOPLE BECAUSE YOU THINK YOU WILL GET STUFF FROM THEM ITâS JUST A REALLY BAD THING TO DO TO PEOPLE!!! i wouldnât be friends w/ people if i didnât genuinely like and get along with them! no amount of pixel cash is worth putting up with people you dont like or abusing people you admire! but iâd also somehow feel wrong to just... neglect mentioning this factor. idk itâs probably a self-esteem thing sjdkgfhdsf i just Donât feel like my #success has been totally out of my own effort because its not like im #hustling or whatever i just posted dragons and stuff happened
-----
2. being consistent! just. posting consistently! posting Every Hatchling I Have and Talking About Them On Tumblr! Once I had a couple nests just sell super fast likely due to aforementioned clout, i was emboldened to just post more of my nests more often and I swear this has more effect than anything else. i just needed the self-esteem boost to Start Doing That posting consistently makes ppl follow u for ur content which gets even more people to look at your dragons which gets more people to buy your dragons.
-
2a. Also just post a lot in general, even if you arenât necessarily posting about your dragons for sale. it definitely helps! just be friendly and active and people will come
-----
3. post your shit in the tag. not in â#dragon-salesâ or â#fr-dragon-salesâ or anything weird like that because I donât know if anyone actually looks at those, but people definitely browse â#flight risingâ. no matter how many followers you have, more people will see your content if you post it in #flight rising than if you just chuck it into the void.Â
-
3a. however! do not put links into the post if you want it to actually show up in the tag. tumblr is cool in that it doesnât actually matter that much when you post something, the same way it really matters on twitter bc twitter has algorithms that decide for you what it thinks you want to be seeing whereas tumblr just shows you everything in chronological order. if you post something into the tag at 1am... it will still be there at 2pm when people log on and start scrolling.
the only thing tumblr seems to consistently hide from a tag (and possibly a dashboard, but idk) are posts with links in them, as a half-assed attempt to limit spam. instead of linking to your sales tab/to the dragons directly in the post, reblog it with the links instead. to reduce latency between a post going up and the links being available, i type out the links in the initial post, cut them, post the thing into the tag, then very quickly reblog, paste the links, and post the reblog jdhfsdf. i donât know if that benefits anything really? but it can sometimes take me a while to type links, so if i posted, pressed reblog, typed up all the links, then posted, itâd be like ~15 minutes where someone may see the post, think âoh i would like to buy those dragonsâ, then canât find the link, think âoh well, i will just find it laterâ, scroll on, and just... completely forget about it. so uh. go quick?
-
3b. the armchair sociologist in me also thinks self-reblogging has the added benefit of like... you know how people are more likely to tip a barista when a dollar is already in the tip jar? or how people are more likely to take one of those little tabs on a flyer if one of them is already missing? i think that works with notes, too. i donât know why i think that or why it happens i just swear once a post gets 1 note, suddenly it gets Even More Notes, and if it doesnât get any notes for a while it will sit at 0 notes until the end of time. so giving yourself 1 obligatory note makes people more likely to interact. i think
-----
4. all of these are hard to quantify but this one is especially so: have cool and unique dragons. make your pairs sexy as hell. donât put all your eggs (hah) into the one basket of selling dragons that are technically âpopularâ. we have all seen triple white/triple obsidian/triple orca/triple any other popular colors and cherub/pere/stained or wasp/bee/glim pthahlos or whatever. theyâre pretty! we get it! but everyone has had one and everyone has had those pairs and market for dragons like that can be super oversaturated. try to break free from that and sell dragons that people can only get from you. I canât tell you what to do though bc that rly depends on you. make pairs that you find exciting or interesting and people will feel that. i have a very specific theme and aesthetic that i donât feel like is especially common on FR and i am genuinely very enthusiastic about it. marine shit is my Thing:tm: both on and off FR and dragons are one of my many ways of expressing that  if you have a Thing:tm:, either some fr-centric aesthetic (like being super into plague or earth or light or something) or something more general (such as any of the -punks or -cores)... just fuckin roll with it honestly. if youâre goth? make got h dragons. like scene stuff that looks straight out of a middle school in 2010? rock that hot-topic lair. outdoorsey type? make dragons that look like youâd meet them on a hike in the woods. it really works with anything! people can tell when you really love something and i know that seeing someone really love something, even if itâs not necessarily MY thing, makes me really excited too!!Â
-
4a. never show fear. people can smell fear. never be like âwell this one isnât that goodâ because suddenly now youâve planted the idea that itâs ugly in other peopleâs heads when they may have really liked it had you not accidentally suggested to them that itâs an ugly dragon. people are EXTREMELY suggestible to even VERY minor cues so be always a little bit bolder than you think you should be youâd be surprised at how many times ive been like âeh, this oneâs kind of a dud, iâll probably have to exalt this one when the auction expiresâ and then that hatchling is the first to sell. never ever ever ever decide what other people like for them. always act like your dragons are the hottest shit in all the land and Believe It. this is what people mean when they say âfake it till you make itâ
- 4b. also, idk if itâs true of everyone but itâs really off-putting to see someone having serious pity-parties for themselves, on sales posts or otherwise. ive had bad experiences with people who are uncomfortably quick to self-depreciate (because they were using their genuine self-hatred to manipulate me or my friends), so i might be a little more trigger-happy about avoiding this behavior than others, but donât weaponize your sadness to guilt people into doing what you want. itâs really not cool.
-----
okay i think thatâs my entire manifesto on how i do dragon selling. anon i am so sorry im sure you were expecting like âbelieve in yourself :)â and here i am dissecting dragon selling like itâs a frog in a science class
edit: AFTER ALL THAT I STILL THOUGHT OF ONE MORE THING. Itâs not really a Point, just a Reminder:
i donât post about all the times i have to exalt dragons that donât sell. you are seeing me being very selective about what i post. you dont sit and stare at my lair or click through offspring lists or check old sales posts. there are a lot of times where someone just doesnât sell. even now when iâm selling stuff pretty consistently i will still sometimes have dragons that donât sell for seemingly no reason. even dragons I think are sure to sell will sometimes just... not. and thatâs ok! you gotta just be.. ok with that. itâs par for the course. i typically list dragons for 7 days on the AH, give them a couple more days after their auction expires (partially because i forget, partially to give them a grace period for people to pm/ask me about them), and then exalt them after that point. w/ some dragons that i donât think got a fair shake for one reason or another (such as the sales post not showing up in the tag or something) i do a little clearance (like the halloween dragons i recently posted) but for the most part if they donât sell, i just exalt them. 90% of the time i donât even bother to level them up i just press the exalt button and call it a day. itâs fine
#if anyone is interested i can make a post about my process for finding new dragon pairs?#iâd just include it here but this post is long enough as it is oo;;#Anonymous

New Yearâs Resolutions: Group commentary

Welcome to the group commentary! As I said in the winnerâs post, there were a lot of white cards in the inbox, and thatâs an obvious sign that white needs a small rework to keep up with its buffed up brothers.
@misterstingyjackâ White does lover its planeswalkers and tying card draw with a powerful card type could be reasonable since card draw is whiteâs main weakness. However I would like it more if this loyalty extension was offered by a creature, so at least you can keep the game rolling.
@askkrenkoâ MaRo has mentioned the âelementalâ supertype quite a few times in podcasts etc, but its really too late to add this element to the game. But weâre here to dream and create, and Strike Twice would be a sick card, if not a staple, in that parallel universe. Also this is the most badass a Pichu has ever been XD
@ignorantturtlegamingâ There were no additional notes other than this crazy card in the inbox, so I can only guess that the creator wants more group-hug effects in red. I want to say Fires of Renewal is on the expensive side, but the effects it offers unconditionally are all very impactful. The Melvin in me appreciates all the instances of â2âł in the card!

@wolkemesserâ gave life to an ancient mtg character from the Shattered Chains book and boy, sheâs a truly solid card. Ordando has decent stats and gives some additional staying power to monowhite decks. I like the whole flavor that is so tough that she can protect others and come back again, but the execution feels a little off to me, as discard and mill decks can abuse her in non white ways. Since weâre going for the flavor win, I would like it more if in order to protect something she exiled herself with a promise counter (which in turn allows her to be cast from exile.)

@i-am-the-one-who-wololoesâ A disgustingly evil win more card? Sign me up! The philosophy of the card plays very nicely in black, especially with low cost high stated creatures that ask for their tribute every upkeep! Counterspells in black are a big stretch in my opinion, but no one canât deny this card is a big flavor win!

@col-seaker-of-the-memiest-legion Speaking of counterspells, hereâs another suggestion for them being in white. Many protective cards can be treated as counterspells, so we could find a loophole and treat this as a very wide protective spell. I think we could have cards like this in the future, but itâs still treacherous terrain because they must be so efficient that might replace blueâs role in the game.
@naban-dean-of-irritationâ I have mixed feelings about Korair. Flavor text matches with the cardâs name quite nicely but it doesnât connect with the actual gameplay. Also venturing into the unexplored âemblems matter territoryâ is surely exciting, but I donât like the fact that is creates emblems by itself, and with that ease to boot!

@mardu-lesbianâ Hindsight is pitched as the blue/red shared keyword ability. I view it in a positive light, meaning I think itâs both flavorful and makes sense for those two colors, but itâs a bit unexciting that it matters only once in the creatureâs life on the battlefield, while other shared keywords are combat related and have a greater impact in the game.
@deafeningsandwichpeachâ Hexproof for player is a rare sight, usually preserved for white and green, but thereâs also Leyline of Sanctity and Witchbane Orb and this changes things to the point I would even tell this card is overcosted. Cost aside, I really like Seal into Darkness!

@snugzâ I would really love blue getting a combat ability thatâs not straight evasion, but going full throttle to lure all creatures is a bit much, given that existing cards are usually uncommon. It could be like old fashioned provoke ( forcing a one on one fight) or even a numbered mechanic, like lure 1 or 3 etc, forcing 1 or 3 creatures to block.

@hypexionâ â Lapse of Certainty is definitely a card, but thereâs a reason why it was not repeated. Here, Meanâs to Delay, like Unexpectedly Absent, is an X spell where usually the correct way to ply it is for X=0, turning it into a slightly better counterspell. Not against counterspells in white, but be cautious.
@deg99 With this Angrath design, deg wanted to build more on the Rakdos color combination, through caring about stolen creatures and you know accidentally sacrificing them before returning them to their rightful owners. The power level is quite high, but itâs so enticing that I would gladly playtest this card to enjoy the crazy ride!

@hiygamerâ Sooner or later, we will see this card printed, Iâm sure! When that time comes, I hope it costs a little less, and also that it has an equally inspiring flavor text! Really nice design!

@thedirtside Our friendly snailbear wanted magic to be a little more weird, and whatâs weirder than a procrastinating Eldrazi, looming over the battlefield, doing itâs own things. Given, its practically impossible to interact with it and this takes away a lot of points per say, but I love suspend and bizarre triggers that feel like a disturbance in the Force. But we must cling to simpler things to make it happen.

@stormtide-leviathanâ The proposal of this design is sponsored by âHorse Unitedâ inc and pushes WOTC to pass an errata to merge all Pegasi, Unicorn and Horses into one race XD On the actual design, Swifting Steed is a real treat for limited!

@teaxchâ here tacling on the big issues of mtg, the shared keyword for blue and black! Feint is surely flavorful and it would make combats really interesting, but the main requirement for a shared keyword is to be able to mix with the other established keywords of the color pair. Blue and black have a lot of evasive abilities so an ability that matters when youâre blocked might not get the green light. That said, I definitely want to see this ability here and there in sets. A little guile spices things up! Also, neat flavor text XD!
@dimestoretajicâ With a quick read I was quite thrilled, but then I realized that you had collective care about itself. That leads into being a bit clunky, and also it goes from 0 to 100 in 1 sec because itâs either you have not 3 collective so no draw for you, or you got 3 , which means 3 triggers and thus 3 cards!! With a small tweak, this brave insect could be holding the fairâs coveted trophy!
@corporalotherbear
â Itâs true that there are some dryads that care about multicolored shenanigans, and I really like Manatwist Dryad playing into this space and establishing this trend. Because if green canât care about multicolors, who can?

@fractured-infinityâ Edit: I forgot the commentary for this entry last night. My sincere apologies! A new card type is always an exciting gift for our inbox! Strongholds can die from damage like planeswalker do. They make sense in white and I could see them secondary in blue as large structures are products of community and science.
Watcherâs tower has two passive abilities, the vigilance granting requires 0 effort, while the buff requires you to âmanâ the stronghold with the garrison activated ability. I wish phasing was still relevant so the creatures would phase out instead of exiling themselves, because things can quickly get out of hand with blink shenanigans.
The +2/+2 buff might be a bit much because it isnât that hard to get it online on turn 3. But all in all, Watcherâs Tower is very interesting and I hope Wizards will explore this space in the future.

@partlycloudy-partlyfuckoff Sometimes you see a mechanic and itâs not in the color it deserves to be. Mentor in Green seems like a perfect fit, and the non human clause gives this Leonin a greater sense of camaraderie. All in all a good design and future proposal.
@gollumniâ I saw this card in a very positive light with the first read. I like investigate after all, and I had good memories of it pulling its weight in Shadows over Innistrad, giving White a taste of the forbidden fruit that is card draw. But with the second read, I feel the card is too efficient, taping two creatures and two lands for an instant speed draw is quite good, and adding the overrun option felt a bit too much. But other than power level concerns, I really dig this design.
@corillionâ This might seem like an everyday card without context, but the change suggested involves first strike and double strike being relevant in fights. Iâm all for it, but I got a feeling that the closer we will get to this is like a first strike lord that allows only first strikers deal damage in fights.
@kytheon4-4 said let there be hatebears, but we got hatebirbs instead XD but instead of harassing your opponent, this feathered boi plainly protects your side of the board so you get to play uninterrupted, but only on your turn. Fair and square.
@reaperfromtheabyssâ Ending the same way we started, with planeswalker support, this time in Red, as it is proposed to be the secondary planeswalker matters color. I can get behind this idea, as red has a sense of wanderlust thematically, and in terms of game, it cares about noncreature spells so planeswalkers are game too. On the card itself, the etb trigger is quite nice, even dealing two damage is fine. About the alternative loyalty ability, a mere ping is something that you would encounter on a weaker planeswalker, so it could at least be a + 2 loyalty ability, to ensure the survival of your planeswalker, as red isnât really good at defending.

9 years later and we have at last got a new Eva film and the end of the Rebuild project.
Much was made at the start of Rebuild of the desire to introduce Eva to a new audience. 1.0 more or less leant into its original goal and restaged episodes 1 to 6 of the TV series with a bigger budget, CGI, some more blunt and early reveals and a few weird alterations for the existing fan base. The Angel numbering was off; everyone knows Lilith is stuck in the basement, Seele just default to their monoliths. Kaworu is actively introduced at the tail-end rather than alluded to in the opening titles. As an intro, its fine (though most would agree the equivalent stage of the TV series isnât really a struggle to cope with either), though a few stylistic and environmental changes lead many to conclude this was a direct sequel to End of Evangelion. 2.0 seemed content to build off of the intro but steer away from the relevant section of episodes â roughly 8 to 17. Recognisable moments like the falling Angel, the corrupted Unit 03 and the ribbon angel and Unit 01âs impossible reactivation share the screen with altered relationship dynamics. Now we get Mari one of the few wholly new characters who gets to open the second film in a wildly dramatic fashion. The key of Nebuchadnezzar (which does at least re-enter proceedings in the final film, but I am even shakier on what it is or used for â even fandom seem to have struggle to explain this as anything other than a blunt drop-in replacement for the Adam embryo in the TV series). And come the end its time for Third Impact already, Shinji altering the world around him to rescue Rei from the depths of an Angel. Kaworu uses an unfamiliar spear to incapacitate Shinji and the preview hints at a story further from the rails than ever. 3.0 is as promised more or less completely divorced from anything Eva had done before. Just not the off-the rails version 2.0 advertised. Some will be quick to note that none of the Rebuild previews have entirely accurately advertised their subsequent instalment; 1.0âs features at least one key scene that never happened (Mistao slapping Ristuko in a seeming allusion to the Sea of Dirac Angel) while even the sequences of animation that did make it look nothing alike. Which is fair, but even then 2.0âs bears absolutely no resemblance to 3.0 and even 3.0âs very strange preview doesnât really jibe with 3.0+1.0 ultimately. 3.0 is post-post-apocalypse and with a whole 14 years just evaporated between films. Thereâs a distinct last third of Nadia feel to it. About the only part similar to a former incarnation is Kaworu and Shinjiâs relationship which while not even roughly mapping to episode 24 serves the same function; to make Shinji distraught before the climax of this story. But 3.0 is also the point where that initial premise of the series slams headlong into the drift from familiar territory. Where the film is a quantum leap away from the mystery terms and slow reveals. The oddities and confusions pile up given the glimpsed state of the world, the strange gridded moon, the sea of Eva corpses, the strange state of Lilith in the depths of Nerv. An awful lot happened while Shinji was (for reasons no one has explained or seems to care about except me) IN SPACE and the film only ever alludes to the sequence of events occurring between these two films in the broadest of strokes. Which if done a certain way can be compelling though I did not find it to be the case here in the slightest. Itâs a huge struggle to build up even a vague idea of what went down and thatâs with heavy deferral back to the TV series again. If youâre new, none of this means much of anything. Even mixed media doesnât help. The reveal there was a limited run manga of events prior to 3.0 had a potential for answers, but upon reading a synopsis... Nope. Helps not even a tiny amount. Also this mixed media attitude is never to be encouraged. So, I didnât like film 3 much at all. Film 4 does little to not be based on where it left off. Which is a small mercy that it doesnât effectively toss everything out again and skip further ahead in time. And 3.0+1.0 does at least make use of some of what 2.0 revealed and setup in the spirit of trying to get this into something cohesive. It fails, but it tried. Maybe the points it touches on were the intended direction of the films. Maybe Anno changed his mind on this one. Itâs not like Rebuildâs failure to cohere should be a surprise â the title of the film is simply confusing in sequence. Titled neither 4.0 nor 4.44, instead we have the pretty inexplicable 3.0+1.0 which is just annoying to type. Even thematically this doesnât feel right given its more like 2.0 mushed into 3.0 but I suppose thatâs technically film 5 so... Unless, 1.0 here is supposed to mean the original TV series or EoE, which... End of Evangelion figures unexpectedly largely in the film. Could be that its meant to infer some collection of the Eva cast (the original pilots + Mari? The Ikari family + Mari? The pilots from 1.0 (Shinji and Rei) plus the pilots from 3.0 (Asuka and Mari)?). The other part of course, is that the three prior films had titles in the form of [Thing](Not)]Thing]. 3.0+1.0 decides to dispense with this entirely and instead is titled âThrice Upon a Timeâ. Nothing like confusing matters (and instead media library ordering) by not only giving the film a title that puts it before the 3rd film (since prior to this cinema releases are .0 and the home media (excepting the first release of 1.0) are triple digits of their instalment number) but also has another reference to three within it. It might be some kind of holy trinity allusion, some play on Third Impact, or an acknowledgement that this is theoretically the third version of events surrounding the end of the world (if you take TV series as 1, EoE as 2, and Rebuild as 3). Also potentially a literary reference about cyclical time and messages from the future which is all well and good and fits into a whole other essay about how Rebuild and FFVII Remake are operating on the same basis and making many of the same mistakes by both trying to be fan-service for the new fans and draw in new ones and do the big fan-moments similarly but diverge wildly off in others. Good start! The final film starts with bombast as per 2 and 3 (and thus focused on Mari) though the setup and point of the action is possibly more confused and less explicable (which is saying something given 3.0 opened with retrieving Unit 01 from space. No, I will continue to complain about not getting this. Yes it was very exciting but why was Unit 01 in space? In a strange crucifix coffin. Anyone at all?) â and only vaguely connected to anything resembling the plot. At least 2.0 and 3.0 had some immediate and long term stakes with a cover for Kaji stealing something and bringing Shinji into the plot. This film opens with a scrounge for spare parts in a red Paris that the tertiary cast make no longer red while Mari fights off a massed horde of Evas while battleships are puppeteered from orbit. Itâs all terrible cool and everything, but given at no point do we even begin to understand what is going on or what the stakes even are. Which is a problem with the latter half of the sequence. 2.0 might have started with an Eva vs Angel fight but while there was ambiguity over the situation it at least seemed to lead into the eventual plot. Here weâre getting Eva spare parts for later and a whole dose of new terminology the film has no interest in explaining. Which is par for the course for prior Eva incarnations but again, I feel there was more explanation setting the weirdness up. Here we are reduced to keywords that sound important. The film proper opens with our familiar trio of Eva pilots winding up at a village with their old classmates (which of course, to follow the proliferations of 3 all the way down and also match to Tokyo-3, is in fact, Village 3. The far future sequel to Resident Evil 8 presumably). Who are necessarily now 14 years older than them. Asuka is naked (in a sequence to contrast to 1.0 and 2.0) or in her underwear for far too much of this sequence (and just as creepy as 2.0 got with this) as Shinji struggles in the aftermath of Kaworuâs death, Ayanami (critically not the Rei of 2.0) learns about life (and visits a library with â Iâm not kidding â a poster for Sugar Sugar Rune on display. I like to think not many in the audience caught this slightly odd reference). 30 minutes of the film are taken up with Rei being happy and contented with her life while Shinji slowly recovers and re-enters polite society (sulks, throws up at the sight of the DSS collar, is insulted and force-fed). Thereâs a good case for this section just being an unnecessary time filler, though you donât need to fill time in a film that is 2 œ hours. But if it was cut down, perhaps it would have the same strange feeling as 1.0 had where the aftermath of Shinjiâs second Angel fight lead was mostly skipped and left that part of 1.0 feeling strangely hasty and actively (and badly) abridged. Maybe thatâs just my familiarity with the source material again. Thereâs still an edge of weirdness in the air on the film hits the 45 minute mark; even prior to this gigantic sections of the land are missing, and some things just float around now (apparently because). Past this mark is where weirdness creeps in; the barriers keeping the village from suffering the fate of Paris â the structures a curious match to the Cocytus facility at the start of 2.0. There are headless Eva copies who roam the landscape. An indicator on Ayanamiâs suit runs down. Shinji is advised to talk to his father before he loses the opportunity forever. This one made me laugh, and even Asuka comments that given who Shinjiâs father is and what heâs done donât really make this plausible (or sensible). Ayanami concludes her pastoral life and this stage of the film by transforming back to her original white plug-suit; her AT Field then dissipates and she bursts in a familiar spill of LCL. For such a previously central character, Rei or Ayanami or Lilith will have exceptionally little bearing on the remainder of the film. The plot now kicks in properly as Gendo decides enough is enough and heâs going to be doing some world ending. Our Eva pilots are ready but not the same; we have Asuka, Mari and Shinji. And standing orders for Shinji to be shot if he tries to pilot anything (but given weâre at the end of the world and basically the original plan fails to stop Nerv bringing about the end of the world, that people still try to shoot him is... a little weird and an almost pointless resolution of factors the quaternary cast brought up in 3.0). The entire rest of the film is even more impenetrable and confusing than Kaworuâs sweeping explanations of what happened between films 2 and 3. If 3.0 fumbled the ball on being newcomer friendly 3.0+1.0 actively doesnât care. Not that familiarity with series helps since so much new terminology is thrown at the audience. The entire cast â literally the entire cast â are not only caught up on but also understand the varying levels of psychological, biological and religious nonsense that Eva has formerly wielded as something almost coherent. You, as audience member, are not privy to a fraction of this understanding and thus left to flail for the remainder of the film making what you can of the maddening breadcrumb trail of exclamations and partial explanations. Shinji is no help here and infuriatingly asks barely a single question about what is going on (thankfully he does prompt Gendo to explain a few things â presumably where even the staff had gotten lost on what was supposedly going on). For existing fans, you might get a sense of it by application of known quantities from the previous incarnations (I pity newcomers struggling to make sense of this). What the Lance of Cassius is a thing introduced abruptly into the series â and contrasted with the Lance of Longinus you can muddle through to get some idea of what was going on. 3.0+1.0 however, decides that even that grip on its story is too much and adds a bunch more unnamed spears. Some of them formed from Lilith. This is a thing of some import apparently, though ultimately is effectively buzzword name-checking. We know who Lilith is in context from both 1.0 and the TV series but how that relates to spear formation is beyond me. And then thereâs the part where one of the flying ships (there were four made according to Seeleâs plan. Seele, the former sinister puppet-masters, who died in film 3, and if the flying ships were their idea or this stated at all, I had totally forgotten it in the last 9 years (checking wikia seems to indicate no one else knew this either so I feel vindicated). Seele feel an artefact of the old Eva Anno has no time for â EoE had what equated to three groups vying for control of the process of human instrumentality. Seele are adhering to a prophecy of sorts, Gendo is trying to subvert that process for his own ends, and Misato is trying to stop it. In terms of economical story-telling, the distinction between Seele and Gendoâs goals in causing Third Impact are so slim as to be basically zero (few critical differences though), I suspect Seele were deemed unnecessary and shuffled out of proceedings hastily despite their continued name-checking at this late stage) is turned into another spear because if all the spears are used up, the end of the world canât be averted. You will have to forgive me for failing to notice how and where most of these spears (save three) wound up or what most of that means or why or how or anything. But we have a budget to squander and why not channel the Gurren Lagann energy for action one last time? And there is some action, this presumably part of what a good section of the audience have waited for with baited breath, that thing the TV series so rapidly lost interest in; that EoE staged for narrative cruelty. Smashy giant robot action time! So we get billions of Eva enemies for Asuka and Mari to cut through without problem. They explode and fall away despite exhaustively overwhelming numbers. There is a palpable lack of threat here. A few hitches but nothing the pilots canât cope with. Itâs just empty fan-service, a boast about how much can be rendered into a single frame. We get Asuka, unable to stab critically important Unit 13 (looking distinctly Unit 01-like just with four arms), and then hooking into an odd leftover thread from 2.0. Her accident in the activation test of Unit 03 has left her with a part of herself now more correctly classified as an Angel. And like 2.0 for surprise value, her Eva has special Angel blood injectors to again overcharge her Eva (which seems to be a thing in the latter three films â turn the Eva safety off and go beserk. As if Unit 01 didnât do that all on its own in the first and second film). And this too fails. But this too is just another moment of important and pretention. Where the audience is meant to gasp at Eva/Angel hybridisation (not that the dividing line between Angles and Evas is ever completely clear (not least Unit 03)), at Asuka revealing herself to be part Angel (as if Kaworu and Rei werenât established examples). So her Eva bloated and animalistic is... just another moment. We saw this in 2.0 with Mari releasing her limiters. We saw it in 3.0 in almost the same way. The distinction isnât meaningfully different to the last few times the Evas were let off the leash and became more brutal. And just like the prior times this escalation of Eva body horror, ferocity, blood and over-indulged violence doesnât actually help the situation. Asuka fails in her task as the Unit 13 counter-attacks. Sheâs saved by getting pulled out of reality moments before her end. Of course this being narrative, this being Eva; Gendo, the architect of this situation, is three steps ahead. Misatoâs flying ship is badly and perhaps critically damaged so Gendo can retrieve the limbless body of Unit 01 formerly powering the flying ship. Shooting Gendo doesnât work thanks to the key of Nebuchadnezzar (which did... Uh. Something? Kaji noted it as the lost number kept as a spare in 2.0 which implied Angel or Eva or... No I donât know nor can I make sense of what itâs done to Gendo. Wikia informs me that while itâs never seen on-screen past the one time, its case is in some shots of 3.0. How amazing) and he leaves. And thus, of course, Shinji must get in the f-ing robot once more. But weâre back to the confident, more certain Shinji who 2.0 birthed as we enter the last (but still very long) final stage of the film â and restage End of Evangelion. Curious of course; EoE by turns can feel like a legitimate replacement for the final two TV series episodes or a bleakly, darkly, disturbing and flippant retort to the low-budget metaphysic version of the TV apocalypse. EoE to some has been not so much the intended ending (though buying a complete set of the old Eva in Japan will always net you the 26 original TV episodes, the four amended episodes and EoE), but more a poisoned chalice for the people who wanted a less introspective version of the end of the world and the process of human instrumentality. Anno was free to do what he wanted and veer off the tracks here â he canât get away from the end of the world â this is integral to Evaâs base concept. 2.0âs glimpse of Second and the starts of Third Impact depict a process completely unfamiliar from the TV seriesâs version (reading Wikia explains some of 2.0âs imagery but is still bewildering with reference to 3.0+1.0âs reveals). In Rebuild, the end of the world is staged in the space below the strange aftermath of Second Impact, in an anti-universe where humans cannot venture. And yet, we are still clearly revisiting End of Evangelion. Not exactly the same, but a lot of imagery (the symbols in the sky, the gigantic form of Lilith at multiple points, the crucifix explosions across Earthâs surface) â to say nothing of some actual sections of animation â are taken straight from the 1997 film. Those moments and images were haunting and disturbing (the more overtly sexualised imagery has been completely removed). Clearly no matter what was said at the time or in the interim, EoE is in fact how the ending must play out; this is, or has become, what happens externally and internally when these characters attempt to force a next stage of evolution. The End of Evangelion will always be the end. ...just not quite the same. Not least it is missing most of the infamous moments (Shinji in Asukaâs hospital room is notably completely absent). Thereâs no moment where Shinji strangles Asuka, Komm Susser Tod is missing entire (in favour of something similar sounding but in Japanese), the live-action sequences of the empty cinema or the world without Evas arenât utilised (though some live action footage is included), Rei betraying Gendo and beginning Third Impact outside his control etc. It's actively absurd to type this, but Lilith â Lilith! â has less character here. Which is so astonishingly absurd given the only depiction of Lilith we get is effectively Rei/Rei was Lilith the entire time, but those introspective sequences hinting at something more involved with Rei or the points Lilith does talk directly to Shinji are gone too. This shouldnât be a surprise â we are after all missing a Rei character at the climax. Mostly. 3.0+1.0 almost expects you to remember the last time you saw Eva end the world and contrast it to this new version. The EoE imagery, the footage of Lilith descending from the crucifix, the looming figure of Lilith rising as humanity ends. Even something like the sequence of the backsides of cels running backward is reused â this footage also cribbed from EoE and played out on a wall between two characters. The animation breaks down into scratchy storyboards and later degenerates from finished footage down to outlines, animatics, and storyboard. The end of the world is this time around is more heavily meta. Both EoE and the TV episodes âstagedâ the process of Instrumentality (or parts of it) for Shinji. It occurs in filming spaces and on sets, thereâs lighting equipment and dolls as stand-ins. The strange artificiality of pulling back the curtain on the TV or film production, or else the effect of setting the camera back further than you should for filming a theatrical experience. But even thatâs a false layer given a true pull-back would be to people in front of computers or previously drawing key-frames. Here the staging is more blunt still. It begins with an Eva vs Eva fight between Gendo and Shinji in the anti-universe where their brains make sense of the impossible space with artificially staged areas of familiar locations. A fight in a city has a huge sheet as a backdrop and carboard buildings the Evas kick around. They fight in front of Nerv headquarters and in Misatoâs kitchen. A blow knocks over a section of scenery and sprawls Shinji in the studio space surrounding the set. A crossroads of sort where Shinji will move on from Gendo to meet with Rei, Kaworu and Asuka. The major difference to EoE is that the end here is much more concerned with Gendo; we dive into his psyche and his past. His isolation and desire for it. This feels extremely confessional for Anno all things considered given Gendo was always previously kept at armâs length. This feels revealing about the man behind it all, a reflection of the director. He has admitted during production that at his stage of life he is far closer to Gendo than Shinji â I think this is barely obfuscated here. The flashback is more about understanding Gendo and how Yui changed him than anything about Evas or the end of the world. Gendoâs motivation is revealed to be the same as always; this is how he gets to be with Yui again. Odd details catch as this past plays out. And is that Mari in his memories? Mari, who Fuyustuki calls Mary Iscariot upon meeting her and has prepared something for her. Which feels much more like religious buzz words; thereâs an obvious implication coached in that selection of a name, but how it actually relates to the story or the circumstances is really unclear. Nor am I clear on what Fuyutsuki prepared. He explodes into LCL like last time too. The process is so close to EoE but the mood is lighter and the reasoning behind the cast a little different. Asuka is part of a clone series â same as Rei. Just without the physical signifiers that Kaworu and Rei exhibit and the prior short-hand for clones in this universe (as noted, their design is intended to invoke lab rats). Nice consistency there. The beach ending from EoE is re-done under a blue sky; Asuka is saved thanks to Shinji and Mari working in concert. Kaworuâs beach meeting with Shinji is restaged, the newer, confident Shinji discussing the circular system that delivers Kaworu into his place at the end of the world. So Eva has happened before, meta-wise or time-wise or dimensionally. Take it as you will, no interpretation is more valid than another. Only that Kaworu remembers them all. Itâs happened before and itâs expected to happen again. But Shinjiâs different now, so the end of the world is different. Now itâs time to move on; Kaworu is left with Kaji to tend the earth assured the cycle of Eva productions is at an end â both have been dead all this time. Annoâs attitude to his seeming forever association with this one franchise his and his desire to set it down and move on? EoE finished in space; 3.0+1.0 finishes beneath the Antarctic. The idea of Unit 01 living forever as a testament to humanity is no factor at all Shinji intending (and his parents possibly driving) the final riddance of the Evas from reality â none can be allowed to remain. But now, the film takes an odd turn, and as with EoE, thereâs the coda. In EoE this was the beach scene. For Rebuild: The sun shines, the sky is blue. An adult Shinji sits in a train station and meets with Mari. Sheâs older too now; the pair share a kiss and run from the station hand in hand. So. Uh. Yeah. That happened. Thereâs Kaworu and Rei seemingly alive and well as adults. And Asuka of course. But Shinji winds up with Mari. Mari who knew everything the whole time and might somehow have been part of Gendoâs group at university and known Yui and no, we are not getting any insight into those peculiarities! (or more plausibly it could be Mariâs mother who looks near identical to Mari but... What are we meant to take from this, really?). Mari who met Shinji in a handful of brief moments and has never spent any actual time with him. Mari won the love-triangle! But this is not some simple alternate reality, a different better take world where the cast existed in something resembling our reality; Shinji still wears the exploding DSS collar given to him before rejoining the giant robot fray. Mari effortlessly removes it from his neck. The film ends with a live-action sequence â this is reportedly Annoâs hometown. The world without Evas; we passed the relevant date while 3.0+1.0 was stalled. Shinji made it to 2014, or more plausibly past it in a world without Second Impact. And heâs happy, well-adjusted, and... Not really recognisable as Shinji. Shinji now exists in the present, not the future as he had for so long in pop-culture. But heâs in a different 2021; a world without the pandemic. And that was Rebuild; a project intended as a new introduction to Evangelion that blatantly had its entire core conceit revised at least twice (the 4th film delayed because of Shin Godzilla and then a struggle to write at all) that increasingly and confusingly leant more and more on its famed initial incarnation even as it veered increasingly and erratically away from the familiar sequences. I liked 3.0+1.0 more than 3.0, but canât help but still bemoan whatever 3.0 was going to be when 2.0 happened. The alternate other sequence. And despite it all, despite the allusions to a repetition of Eva and of this being the break in the chain, even those working on and involved with the film see even this as a definitive end. Even Annoâs not convinced thatâs the last word. Eva will come back all over again; naturally â thereâs money to be made here, and whatâs yet another alternate take to add to the TV series, the manga, the games, the other manga, EoE, Rebuild and so on. Kaworu apparently is indeed doomed to revisit this forever alongside everyone else and also remember that for once he was gifted a true end. An impossible conclusion for modern pop-culture it feels.

October 19, 2020: Friday the 13th
This is happening. I am going to watch the first eight Friday the 13th movies over the next eight evenings.
Am I an idiot. Will I even get through them all. Why.
The earlier movies in the series came out at a time when I was a pre-teen movie fan who really wanted to get past the too-scary barrier and just enjoy horror movies. I think rewatching the first couple on cable back in the early 80s helped me get used to horror movies. But it's not like I ever was a huge fan of, just, straight slasher movies. I'd appreciate the effects and the gore, but I never thought they were excellent movies.
So here we are at the first one, still the most famous one. I remember it well enough that I don't think anything will be scary or surprising, but it's been so long that I suspect it will look very, very dated. Let's pop this sukka inâŠ
Right away we get to hear the familiar "riff" or whatever you want to call this bit in the score that goes CH CH CH CH CH HA HA HA HA HA HA. Good job coming up with that.
So they tell us that it's Camp Crystal Lake in 1958, and we cut between teenage camp leader people doing a singalong and a POV stalkercam creeping around. It really doesn't look like 1958 in any way. But that turns into a POV murdering of two boinking teenagers; definitely owes a debt to Halloween, which came out two years earlier. But that ends with the title of the movie shooting out toward us all and shattering some glass we didn't know was there! Oh mercy what a surprise how will I ever get any sleep.
Ha! A crazy old man jumps in front of the nice girl and be-s all scary at her with the portentous "death curse" warning. Kinda hard to believe this movie came out in the same decade as Blue Velvet, is my comment on its dramatic maturity.
0:12:45 - Kevin Bacon's first appearance! Do people remember that this is one of his earliest roles? Still a couple years after his small role in Animal House though, so he was actually known.
So now we're at the camp and we see the girl who makes it to the end. She's talking to the dude with the mustache who is, what, the owner of the camp? There's a creepy tension maybe because they will want us to suspect he's a bad guy later. Or maybe because awkward exchanges are a consequence of movie budgets being small. But there's also dumb plot exposition about how, okay, fine, she'll stay on the job until Friday but then she has to move to California to pursue her real interests. You know, art drawings!
Ooh, now the first girl, Little Miss Backpack, catches a second ride, but we don't see the driver, it's all POV! She's in trouble, and we don't know who it is! Is it Moustachio? She's on the run through the woods! Limping, oh no! And⊠SLASH! That's kind of interesting because it was looking like she might be the protagonist. But in the brilliant clarity of this very nice, newly-restored Blu-ray presentation, we see her cruelly dispatched by way of some pretty mediocre gore makeup. Good enough for what must have been a pretty low budget I guess. But hard to believe this came out just one year before An American Werewolf in London.
0:26:20 - "What Do I Do", says the snake-chasing counselor guy. It's a funny delivery! And I actually like some of the angles in this scene.
Now there's this motorcycle cop character who shows up to Be A Cop at them. The actor seems like he's not very experienced, but like he was cast because he has a weird way of talking that was amusing during the casting sessions.
Bah ha ha ha, the weird dude from town is lurking in the pantry! He emerges shockingly to deliver another warning! The only reason that happens is to make us wonder if he is the stalker. "You're doomed! You're all doomed!" Way to embrace that dialogue, buddy.
It's kind of like the director didn't give these counselor actors individual character notes; he just told them all "you are spunky young camp counselors, that's it, that's the direction".
So Kevin Bacon and his girlfriend have repaired to a little cabin so they can Do It, and something that's occurring to me is that, unlike what we're more used to seeing in slasher movies, they aren't focusing on the sexual attractiveness of the females. The guys and the gals are all just kind of good-lookin-enough young adults who are all into each other. I'm going to keep an eye on how this progresses as I get deeper into the series, if I even last the whole eight movies.
Whoa a dude is dead in the bunk above where they're Doing It! We didn't see that guy get killed even, right? He looks enough like another one of the guys that I might not have noticed his character was absent.
The KB death scene I totally remember, and at first it looks quite good and is a good shock! But because this restoration is so clean, you really notice the color difference between where it's KB's head and a fake body getting speared. Other than that, though, that is pretty exquisite horror movie violence, that death.
KB's girlfriend is looking like she's about to get murdered, and while she is in skimpy underwear, I still don't think it's like that to titillate us as much as to make her seem vulnerable. Am I being naĂŻve? Maybe. The rest of the gang is playing strip poker in their quarters, but they're such regular people and not being filmed in any kind of steamy way.
The pace really slowed down after those couple of bloody murders, but audiences at the time were probably pretty shocked by how bloody they were. Both of those deaths were very much in close-up. At this point in the movie, though, there's a more careful suspense. We go back to Moustachio, chatting in a diner, then having car trouble. It's plodding in a way that seems actually pretty smart. I feel suspense building.
0:56:58 - I donât remember this scene at all⊠one of the girls is all by herself and she clearly hears someone calling for help. It's not done in a "maybe it's the supernatural echo of the drowning boy's screams" way. It's just a lure. The girl goes outside, someone turns floodlights on⊠and we cut away just as she's ostensibly about to get all killed up.
So now it's just the short-haired girl and the dark haired guy that didn't die yet. Are they the last ones left? Other than Moustachio? That happened quick!
1:02:10 - First mention of it being Friday the 13th. It's really not significant to the story or to the whole series. They were clearly just stoked that they claimed "Friday the 13th" as a property.
Moustachio just got killed; no violence; it was just so we could see that he recognized the killer. Plus also now we know for sure he's not the killer, even though we figured that because he was off at the diner while killings were happening. Our minds are really spinning trying to solve this diabolical mystery!
I do like how they are drawing out the suspense at this point. Lots of little moments where maybe a lurker is about to get them.
How come people used to make coffee in the exact same was as they make hot cocoa? Just get a mug and put some coffee crystals in there and some sugar, then pour boiling water in there and serve?
Boom! After all that meticulous slow action, dude is dead on the door! Up until this point, the main girl had no idea that actual deaths were going on, and suddenly she's the only one left alive! It is exciting to watch her figure out what she'll do.
What she does first is go all in on blocking one door. It's kind of unintentionally funny, and also maybe that's what any of us would come up with.
In case she wasn't sure if the other gals were still around, a cadaver of one of them is heaved in front of her through a window! Just like that she undoes all her door work because she sees a jeep pull up. Are we supposed to recognize it as Bad Jeep from earlier? I think we are. It's a nice lady, but we are suspicious because Bad Jeep. But why would she throw a girl through a window and then just a few minutes later arrive in a Jeep?
The Jason's Mom actress is awesome, super intense. Only problem is that it's a little hard to believe that she's twenty years on from being a mother of a kid who was at a camp.
The main girl is on the run and found a rifle, and is just like OMG where is ammo, and she looks as desperate as I'd be. This is fine, you guys. Fine work. Fine, fine work.
1:26:40 - We're near the end. The chase devolved into an I-found-you-hiding-in-the-pantry fight. Jason's Mom got laid out on the floor and there was a little blood, so the main girl was like, time to just kneel by a canoe with my back to all of everything. But Mom is there and the fight ends with her being beheaded, because somehow there was a machete there that only the main girl knew about! The machete from the snake incident earlier that was in a totally different place, I guess. So she rewards herself with a midnight canoe ride by herself on the lake, which honestly should have been pretty free of murderers, not that dumb a move.
What is dumb is this ending. She wakes up in the hospital, vocally convinced that The Boy Jason pulled her under, even though she didn't see what happened because he grabbed her from behind. But there were cops there looking right at her at that time, they should have seen. Also, like, so do you slip into a coma when you fall overboard or something? Last time I got fully submerged in water I didn't wake up in the hospital with lots of questions.
So that's that! I watched Friday the 13th and told you what I was thinking as I watched it. It is not without virtues and the Blu-ray transfer looks very nice, but it is a slasher movie whose intended audience is no more nuanced than the undefined blob of camp counselor characters that make up most of the movie.

Ishihara Hitomi [KNB OC]

BOOM BAM POW - HEREâS ANOTHER. I wasnât going to go for Furihata next, but I felt super compelled to draw her, so I ended up kind of accidentally up going forward with her.Â
;w; I do really like her though, and I hope you guys do too <3
Name: Ishihara Hitomi (Last name, First name)
Age: 16
Birthday: March 2nd || Pisces
Height: 5âČ 0
School: Seirin || First Year
Clubs/Committees: Art Club, Showcase Club
Occupation(s): Student || Artist
Personality: Ishihara tends to be a little spacey. She falls into daydreams and idle thoughts, and will sometimes detach from reality, usually mulling over ideas for her artwork and inspiration. She sometimes will go into these states for quite some time, only to suddenly re-emerge with an idea and begin furiously scribbling something down on paper if she canât immediately go to a canvas or workspace. She is creative and thoughtful, though sometimes her inability to connect with reality leaves her short-spoken with people or quick to leave a conversation. When caught at a good time, sheâs kind and willing to converse, though sheâs still not particularly good at leading the conversation if it isnât related to one of her interests, but she will definitely try. Sheâs soft spoken, and may come off as quiet or timid, and while that isnât necessarily the case, she can sometimes become timid if the circumstance becomes tense, as sheâs actually a touch sensitive.Â
Her artistic side is her eccentric side. She tries new things and will often end up energized by the thought of creating a piece even better than the last. She becomes much more outspoken, and caught in a certain adrenaline and intense focus. She can occasionally speak very bluntly when trying to get her point regarding her art across, After she winds down, sheâs sometimes comically exhausted, and can barely form words, so will only facial expressions and gestures.Â
Backstory/Story: Ishihara was a young prodigious artist. Her talent was found from an early age, and proudly, her parents encouraged her goals. Sheâs entered a many of art shows and displays her work in local galleries, occasionally even being paid for pieces for magazines or book covers. Sheâs still only really well known to people the artistic niche, but has been making strives to improve. Though her parents push for it, Ishihara isnât very concerned about fame or money, only wanting to create pieces that she is proud of showing off.Â
She joined the schoolâs art club, and after gathering up a few members and a sponsor, she organized the Showcase Club. While the initial intention was to push her ability to the next level, she managed to get some other aspiring artists involved, some of which joining to get some advice from her. This club is built on the idea of forming a themed collection that will be judged by the end of the trimester, and organized to be displayed at a school art show.Â
In the beginning she struggled with the focus of her collection, but after some pacing and marinating, she became inspired by the zero-to-hero story of the basketball team. She decided to make them the focus of her art, and began to watch their practices and their games. Unfortunately knowing that they were being watched for artistic purposes stripped away the organic part of them and.... a lot of them started to pose for the reference pictures, and such, or suggest ideas (which of course she quickly shut down or blocked out)... So getting what she wanted out of them was a little difficult, and would require more time and effort, but she was determined.Â
Whilst sticking around, she developed somewhat bizarre relationships with the player, âbizarreâ mainly due to her weird way of communicating.Â
Relationships:Â
Furihata Kouki: Their relationship seemed to sprout without much warning to most, as it usually came from free time spent outside of school and practice. She claimed that she wanted many references of him, as he seemed to be âone of the biggest zeroesâ and that fit with her ideal âzero to heroâ theme. Though it was a blower, she didnât mean it in such a harsh way. Either way, the time spent with her gathering her references, but also picking up more ideas for her personal pieces caused the two to spend a little extra time with one another. He gave a few suggestions she actually heeded, able to find a few of the local stores in some pretty scenic areas, and some ideal aesthetic places, like near a few of the old railroad tracks. This became a light routine, and after they managed to start holding fluid conversations, the two really became close nearing into the Winter Cup season.
Kagami Taiga: She at least appreciates that he never tried to strike a pose for her. Now, if only he had much less in the way of suggestions to make regarding her iteration of his form. Just for those suggestions, she felt tempted to swap his body with Kurokoâs, but refrained for the sake of her image. She doesnât dislike him, but sheâs gotten to the point where she actually intends to speak bluntly to him, which typically causes him to get riled up.Â
Kuroko Tetsuya: She appreciates his appreciation. He calmly and quietly asks his questions, and accepts her answer. He had no problem remaining natural, as half of the time he didnât even expect her to see him. These two hold conversation regularly, but also respect each otherâs need for alone time to think, or just be by themselves. Pretty solid friendship.Â
Koganei Shinji: She probably verbally attacks him the most. From poses to ridiculous suggestions, and even completely invading her workspace to sneak peeks at her work -which is one of her pet peeves. Although in the long run they get along well, she tends to be used to just calmly directing her frustration onto him.Â
Mitobe Rinnosuke: Probably the most well-behaved one, and she appreciates it. She seems to have some sort of strange mutual understanding of him, claiming that it comes from attention to detail. They donât really know if sheâs bluffing or not, but she seems to converse with him well enough, despite him saying nothing, so itâs believable.Â
Kiyoshi Teppei: She had a fascination with him from the start. She consistently was intrigued by the large span of his hands and his ability to grip the basketball. She seems to have a sort of inspiration spanning specifically from his size, similar to Murasakibara.Â
Hyuuga Junpei: She mainly appreciates he and Rikoâs ability to reign in the team. It lets her get back to her work in peace. Itâs more of a respect than anything.Â
Murasakibara Atsushi: She doesnât much address other teams and their players, but after seeing the sheer intimidating height and size of this male she couldnât help but approach him for questions and to get a better look. She is completely fascinated by his unnatural body for his age, and seems to light up with curiosity, as she often states that she had no idea someone his height could really exist. She sort of goes out of her way to attempt to befriend him, yielding mixed results. Sometimes heâs fine with it, and other times he doesnât quite have the patience to listen to her go on for ages. Overall itâs a decent friendship(?), just with questionable levels of depth.Â
[Maybe more stuffs. ;w; Gotta see what I do with this]

June 20th-June 26th, 2020 Creator Babble Archive
The archive for the Creator Babble chat that occurred from June 20th, 2020 to June 26th, 2020. Â The chat focused on the following question:
What is something youâre just not very good at right now writing and/or drawing in general?
Deo101 [Millennium]
mysteries. 100% I can not write mysteries!
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
ears
Deo101 [Millennium]
the connection between legs and torso. No not hips, I can draw hips fine, but like the movement aspect of it
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
Action scenes. Orchestrating fights or big motions on the page... it doesnât come naturally to me! I have to look at a lot of reference to see how other artists do it. Impact shapes, speed lines, anything to convey movement...
But I am slowly building a vocabulary of... fight shapes? Iâm calling them fight shapes, haha
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
I feel that
Your feeling I feel deeply
"visual library" is a term that comes to mind
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Composition. I just talked about this earlier today, but.... yup. Composition is my bane.
Mitzi (Trophallaxis)
I'd like to get better at writing in general. I have a lot of trouble verbalizing things I see in my head, and so I gotta rely on images and thumbnails to get any idea across, sometimes. otherwise im a windbag and use 5000 words to say 0-1 things, lmao
carcarchu
I have trouble writing simply. I always want to embellish, add extra details, more characters and make everything more complicated and i worry it ends up making things unnecessarily convoluted
Drawing-wise i hate drawing hands
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
The legit thing I am worse at writing is fucking
Deo101 [Millennium]
omg
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
essays to convince people to hire me
Deo101 [Millennium]
OH OKAY
WAY TO CUT IT OFF
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
YEAH
Mitzi (Trophallaxis)
OH
carcarchu
let her finish deo
Mitzi (Trophallaxis)
comedic timing at its finest
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
omg
I was very confused for a sec(edited)
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
but seriously like speaking of filling gaps this is what I'm legit struggling most with right now so any help much appreciated
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
raises hand
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
I need to write a personal statement and every time I sit down to edit I want to die
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
I volunteer as tribute
writing is basically the only thing I'm really good at
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
It's not the writing I hate
It's the writing about me
carcarchu
is that the thing where you have to write in 3rd person? like those blurb things on people's websites?(edited)
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
It just feel so gross whoring out my deeply held passions and struggles for a spot in med school
No I'm talking about college essays lmao sorry for derailing
The blurb things are an interesting topic though!
Have you guys writtent those before and does anyone actually like writing them?
carcarchu
i had to write a blurb about myself for my university's website and yeah it was uncomfy
lemme see if i can find it
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
I HATE writing those
because I just start like, "Crona J. is an artist and writer from Chicago......." And I have no idea how to continue
Deo101 [Millennium]
god yeah even just writing a profile or about me is hard enough!!!
I'm always like "deo - 22 - she/her - illustrator - webcomic author - student" and then i leave it
thats it thats all you get
depending on the platform i MIGHT put bi - disabled and thats it!!!!
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
yeah
half of the stuff I write doesn't even feel relevant to the audience either
who cares that I have been drawing since I was 12 lol?
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
Mate I don't even write those. My bio is like "UCSD" "Read my comic"
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
hahaha
Deo101 [Millennium]
I also always feel like when I see "ive been drawing since I was 5!" I kinda think like... well everyone has been -_- like this doesnt tell me anything, how long have you been an aspiring pro, how long have you been studying art...? that tells me more
so I never put that kind of stuff in my biod either
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
yeah, and also, I didn't go to prestigious school, so I don't even include my college
and I only have one comic project so far, just under a chapter
so what do I write?
Not that important an issue, but irksome nonetheless
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
I don't include my school because it's prestigious, I include it because it's not an art college
Deo101 [Millennium]
owch
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
I want fellow stem-y yet artsy people from my school to recognize me as one of them(edited)
DEO stop interupptung me at the worst points!!
Deo101 [Millennium]
i love jumping to conclusions. so no.
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
If it's a bio where I can talk about the comics, I try to spotlight a few tropes/genres that'll catch the eye of potential readers. Not a full-fledged summary, just a quick hit of If You Like These Words, You'll Probably Like Reading It. ("Fantasy, comedy, shapeshifters, PTSD, time travel, cats")
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
And if it's gonna be personal, same deal with bits of personal info -- not trying to be a Comprehensive Biography, just pulling a few details that are relatable connection points
The problem with "I've always wanted to be a writer/artist/cartoonist" isn't just how generic it is, the problem is also the vibe of "here's my thing, your role in this is to support me"
Whereas if you say something like "I like drawing cute girls and writing fantasy," the response can be "oh hey, I like seeing cute girls and reading fantasy, tell me more!"
Or if you go with "Sailor Moon fan, will put extra cheese on everything," people can go "cool, that's relatable, we can like Sailor Moon and cheese together." It gets at your shared investment in a fun thing, it's not about expecting them to be personally invested in you
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
I think perhaps the most fundamental thing is "you can't please everyone." I've never liked the 'random food related weird tidbit tacked on' thing because it feels too try-hardish to me, but I understand for other people, it's not a matter of trying too hard and is genuinely how they just talk.
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
Oh definitely, you hold out for a bio that connects with everyone and you'll never get it done
AntiBunny
Personally I'm not great at drawing cars. It's why all my cars early on in the comic were side view only, and old blocky looking things. It was all I could do. I've been getting better by using references.
Every so often I buy a little hotweels or matchbox car when I'm buying groceries. I aim for realistic ones based on real vehicles, especially utility vehicles like ice cream trucks, ambulances, fire trucks, and whatnot you'd see every day in a city. I keep a little box of them on my desk, so if the scene calls for a car to be visible, I have a reference that can help me get all the curves and angles right.
Sure beats drawing from memory, but also practice time in the sketchbook with them is a necessity.
Now crowd scenes are beginning to be my bane. Not because they're hard to draw, just because they're time consuming.
Suddenly I realize why old episodes of Sailor Moon has cities with people free sidewalks and empty streets.
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
That's a great idea, gathering the model cars! I should do that for a future comic.
kayotics
I also struggle with cars so, uh, my comic takes place in fantasy 1700-1800s
But also horses are bad too
Cars and horses! They suck
Deo101 [Millennium]
do what I did and make up an easier animal to draw than a horse ;)
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
Vehicles in general. Should just put everyone on roller blades and be done with it
Deo101 [Millennium]
I'd lov that tbh
kayotics
Iâve considered making something other than horses......
Deo101 [Millennium]
I highly encourage it, the people love it and also so does my brain
kayotics
Or else lean into them being ugly
Deo101 [Millennium]
heres the trick about horses though they look really weird and as small as you make their legs, when you think "this is way too thin..." youre wrong and their ankles are probably smaller than that
kayotics
The thing that gets me is their faces
Deo101 [Millennium]
... mask
kayotics
Hahaha
I should just make deer the normal mode of transport
Deo101 [Millennium]
that would be really cute tbh
kayotics
I love deer and theyâre cute
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
Just exaggerate them to the point where it looks like a style choice
Your people already have unrealistic proportions
Why not the horses too
kayotics
Thatâs how I draw buildings tbh because I hate buildings
Deo101 [Millennium]
I also gave horses dog mouths, maybe do something like that? someone can be like "horses dont look like that?" and as long as youre consistent you can say "they do in this world!!!"
kayotics
Oh god no thatâs like a devil creature
Deo101 [Millennium]
yeah they look horrible but its fun
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
I legit remember saying that to you deo lmao
Deo101 [Millennium]
ive had dog horse for years you didnt give me this
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
Not the they look horrible part
kayotics
Iâve already got beasts, I donât need horses to look WORSE than they did
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
Bwah I remember
Time to archive dig(edited)
Deo101 [Millennium]
I love dog horse
kayotics
Honestly itâs good but they scare me
Deo101 [Millennium]
yeah... maybe instead give them cat mouths
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
https://discordapp.com/channels/472908933045026827/634081658018070549/688589449562423422
wait omg this is the message that led to your first dm to me lmao
Deo101 [Millennium]
is it??? omg i think it is... historical moment
dog horse brings us together
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
Another point to convince kay to draw uncanny animals!
Deo101 [Millennium]
what I do to make birds fun to draw is making them sparkly
maybe try that
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
god you're gonna ruin kay's carefully crafted aesthetic
is this your competitiveness showing its face again(edited)
Deo101 [Millennium]
they can make it work! why do you doubt their abilities
make this the main mode of transport
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
ah is that how it works in that case i have 10 shitty indie game ideas
make them pls
Deo101 [Millennium]
implying my ideas are shitty??? rude!
kayotics
I have an aesthetic?
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Or if you want to be very efficient, everyone in universe can teleport
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
lmao you have an excellent aesthetic
crona
i do that already
kayotics
Crona.... thatâs my comic already!! Haha
Deo101 [Millennium]
kay does also have teleporting to be clear
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
don't underestimate my laziness!
Deo101 [Millennium]
LMAO
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
See
It must be great advice
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
oh crap you're right kay also does have teleporting
and unrealistic beasts, to be fair
kayotics
Sometimes on the same page
Thatâs the eyes I draw on the beasts
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Or be even lazier, and make it so that horses and beasts either don't exist or haven't been domesticated in that region. Everyone walks. Their feet hurt, but their calves are glorious.
Deo101 [Millennium]
you get it
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
wait crona and deo also have comics where teleportation could exist
will you join us?
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
lol, yup
Deo101 [Millennium]
nope
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
(nah, I've already drawn horses. They're not so bad if you stare at photos)
sierrabravo (Hans Vogel is Dead)
drawing horses is fun!!
[multiple people are typing]
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
And there will also be hella walking, because the leg game must be strong, otherwise I'm not doing my job
Deo101 [Millennium]
ive decided that millennium is like really in the future but things like time travel, teleportation, warp speed... nope! You can go really fast in a spaceship but like nothin crazy
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
man these planets real close together then
or maybe people just live a really long time ...?
Deo101 [Millennium]
I just do my version of teleporting which is "wow it'll take a week to get there" and then its a week later
dont worry about it
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
nice
Deo101 [Millennium]
its not realistic, but its consistent
đERROR404 đ
ahhhh horses are really nice to draw imo, if i can get it right lol
Deo101 [Millennium]
I like drawing horses a lot I just never do it tbh
đERROR404 đ
something needs to fuel my addiction to cowboy culture
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Consistency is key tbh
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
I just do my version of teleporting which is "wow it'll take a week to get there" and then its a week later
when my whole comic takes place in like a week lmao
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
if you decide that gravity doesn't exist in your world, as log as you're consistent with it, you're golden
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
in the unlikely event i get tired of drawing my comic i can adopt deo's strat "wow it'll take a week to get to the ending"
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
My comic takes place in about a year (not counting flashbacks which span... uh... a very long time)
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
"man sure seems like this conflict will take approximately a week to be resolved" "one week later"
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
hahaha
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
"sure did get resolved"
the end
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
convenient
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
i wonder if anyone's done that
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
One Korean series I followed for years did it
and everyone was pissed, as you can imagine
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
lol
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
better than cancellation?
Deo101 [Millennium]
LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
what a way to go
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
I'd honestly have preferred cancellation/ abandonment
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Just have a fan finish it for you at that rate lmao
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
OH that's a good discussion topic. If you got tired of your comic, or life got in the the way of you working on it anymore, how would you end it as quickly as possible?
Deo101 [Millennium]
maybe rephrase that a little
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
I would toss it at my little sis, and she would do it for me, no joke
Deo101 [Millennium]
My little sister also would probably take over it for me
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
let's move to general?
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
eyyy!
Deo101 [Millennium]
but also I could just be like "They got an email that john died of old age its over now"
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
MVP sisters!
lol
an email
what a way to end it
eliushi [Keyspace]
For me itâs panels. Past me thought that the four panel structure would make things easy. Nope. Itâs limiting how I want to tell the story so... Iâm trying to branch out now and looking for other inspirations for panel and layout
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Just change the shape of your panels. It forces you to be creative.
eliushi [Keyspace]
True true! I have those in upcoming updates
But my heart swoons for the page spreads
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
oh yes
They are so gorgeous, but difficult to plan
eliushi [Keyspace]
Initially I was planning on storyboards but now Iâm more comfortable with comics I think Iâll be aiming for traditional layouts
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Yeah, storyboards are an entirely different beast
Desnik
I'm currently working on clearly portraying character motivation
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
I think for me I don't draw animals often and rip have to draw a few for the upcoming pages so I'm just doing my best at this point lol
AntiBunny
Panel arrangement is the heart of comics as an art form. It takes practice, and study to learn how the eye flows from one thing to the next.
And once you have a thorough understanding of the rules you can learn how to carefully break them to produce something truly eye catching.
If I had to say the simplest rule to understanding flow is, if you need arrows to tell you which direction to read, then you're doing something wrong.
DanitheCarutor
This is candy for my self-deprecating mentality. Lol Honestly though. I'm not the best at writing in general, I don't like doing it physically, avoiding it at all cost (outside of dialogue and poorly done bullet points on scrap paper.) so I don't really know if/think I'm particularly good at it. I remember the last time I tried to physically write something was back in high school, I still have it saved on my computer, but it was something else. Too many dialogue scenes and overly detailed descriptions of things and characters. I only made it a little ways before giving up with "You know, this will be easier to just show than describe.". Story and character wise for my current comic, I'm not sure how well it's turning out or how good it will be in the end, my brain defaults my work to mediocre so I tend to be totally blind to what I'm doing right. I know my characters aren't the best for sure since they're all fleshy flaw bags with too many flaws, and I know I could have presented certain scene changes and such better, but that's all I can think of objectively. The art portion is something I at least know I can execute decently, but my color composition is the worst. I'm aware that I need to improve it, and I know what needs to be done, but it's something I can't really accomplish with my comic since I just want to focus on finishing pages. I'll have to make time to draw up some throw-away illustrations to experiment with, which I hope to have a little bit of now that I'm not on a regular update schedule. Also I can't draw vehicles and architecture for the life of me, I've referenced and studied but I still can't wrap my head around it. ALSO extreme angles and perspectives are still things I need work on, like 4-point circular perspective, ground level shots and over the head shots.
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
There's a lot of things I want to improve, but something I haven't seen mentioned yet: I would like to get better at deciphering feedback, how to glean useful things from multiple conflicting feedback.
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
Ooh that's a good one keii
I haven't really had to deal with that before though because all the negative feedback I've gotten is pretty consistent
Can I ask what the conflicting feedback you got is?
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
Oh gosh, I legit spent a long, long moment trying to figure out where to even start
eliushi [Keyspace]
I really like this approach to feedback
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
Yo Eli this is so good
eliushi [Keyspace]
Mary robinette is goals
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
this is spectacular already
wow
eliushi [Keyspace]
Pretty sure a wiser writer passed this onto me I have since used it a lot and it works for me
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
This is so so good Perfectly said about crits in creative fields
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
One example I can think of isn't actually something that was criticized, but showed up a lot in various ways: "this is (supposed to be) an exciting adventure romp centering Danbi" vs "this is an emotional journey story centering Ethan" ... Not a criticism, but two very conflicting interpretations. People who have one interpretation are shocked and confused when I tell them about the other one.
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Holy crap, Eli... This is one for the folder of absolute knowledge
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
woah, excellent advice
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
And yeah, that is a really good one. Symptoms are extremely useful, and diagnoses tend to be more useful in a conversation rather than a one-way "here is my diagnosis" thing
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
I haven't heard it said before but the explaining eliminating a clean reaction rings so true to me
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Ahhh, this is literally the one document I have needed my entire life
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
also the helping someone tell the story they want
also the stream of consiousness, MAn
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
I think I'll save that for my future high schoolers lol
some of the stuff said there is what I've noticed in the last few years critquing in academic settings but its nice to kno!
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
People have given me stream of consciousness reactions before and they were the most helpful. Almost all the changes in the story from others' reactions were from stream of consciousness reactions, not intentional critiques
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
Yeah, one of the most helpful "critique" I ever got was also completely unintentional
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
One of the most useful tips in this guide for me in particular is the "As a writer don't:" section. I struggle with it a lot.
On the note of things we are bad at in the comic-making process, I am very bad at taking critiques!(edited)
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
tbh for a long time, my biggest struggling point that's not in the "as a writer don't:" is "don't throw yourself into the void of self-hate." I'm better now, but boy, when it was bad, it was bad.
But perhaps that kinda thing better fits into "as a person don't:"
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
I am pretty good at taking critiques, but pretty bad at giving critiques! Right now the point I'm at is I'm just gonna not give critiques until I'm more mature
But then after I decided that an amateur writer friend told me his story idea that I not only disliked but was sort of offended by
and I really wanted to tell him but I didn't know how to do it nicely...
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
ooof
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
oh no
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
yeah, that's really tough
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
rip I tend to do kinda a sandwich method. I had to say some rough things few days ago on a practice pitch run and I pretty much said
Deo101 [Millennium]
Uh oh
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
"Your idea is developing for sure, but I think you need to reconsider some of the world building choices you done. Have you thought of researching such and such."
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
That's basically what I said
But I think I had to say "research ffs" in increasing intensity like 3 times lol
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Oh, nice, the "let's give them compliments too so that they know I'm not just being mean" method
It's a good method tbh
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
Rip it's not that like
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
Deo might have something to say about this but it was about schizophrenics in a mental institution being portrayed in a real weird way by someone who didn't know anything about it(edited)
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
Ooof
Deo101 [Millennium]
Ah man
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
ewww
Deo101 [Millennium]
I'll always stand by "asking people who've lived what you're writing about is the best form of research and can't be replaced"
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
Yeah I would said the to the person consider researching more on the topic and interview folks who have schizophrenia
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
Dude I brought you up lmao
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
and also like "is there a reason you want to depict it this way?"
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
oooh
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah I know I'm agreeing idk... Idk what else I'd have to say on the topic
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
That's a very good question to ask someone
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
and depending on their responses, I would just put my two scents in there that rip
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah I always ask "what are your goals?" Before I ask anything else
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
critiques are kinda my strong point sinc eLMAO I do em all the time in my class
and teaching so yeah LOL
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
Deo I mean I brought you up to this guy like saying "my friend messaged people online and they were super willing to talk to her you could do that"
Deo101 [Millennium]
OHHHHH gotcha
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
I try my best to figure out what they want out of it and just deliever with some handful of suggestions
but I won't sugarcoat it unless you're a high school student or younger lmao
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah I'm often told I'm a lil too harsh but like idk
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
I wouldn't say sugar coating it per say... More just telling them what their strengths are too, so that they have an idea of where they're at
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
telling someone their strengths is just as useful as telling them their flaws
that way they can highlight them
like just because you story has no flaws doesn't mean it's good right?
gotta have stuff that stands out in a good way as well
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
Someone once phrased it as "Let's list everything that's wrong here, and find out how we can fix them" vs "How do we take this to the next level?" and that really resonated with me. It's not about sugarcoating; it's more about helping them get to the next level in the direction they wanna go.
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
THIS
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah I try to point out things that are going well, and I usually try to only point at things that ppl can work on immediately
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
I should phrase my statement more clearly. But yeah Kei that's what I usually look for when critiquing
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
There's often no need to tell them "your writing is only at level 3, and that's bad because the max level is 99." Just tell them how to get to level 4.
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
I dont' see it like its something bad but something that is challenging to them at the time
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
Unless they have extremely unrealistic expectations or whatever that are standing in their own way
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
just have to figure out how to get out of the hump
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
Yep. I see this phenomenon in animation a lot. A good animation director will help you boost your existing work to something stronger, but still yours. A bad one will tell you to do it their way, and chide you for doing it âwrong.â
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
rip I know a person like that and lmao
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yessssss
That's why I always ask "what are your goals" to start
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Yup
đERROR404 đ
I totally agree!!!! A LOT of the most important bits of great criticism is understanding exactly where the original creator was intending to go, and formatting your statements around helping them achieve that!!!!!!!
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Critiques are impossible if you don't know what the person is trying to achieve
đERROR404 đ
Just stating things that you would change if you were making it may seem useful and relevant to you the critic, but unless the creator is headed the exact same direction as you, they have just as much reason to invalidate the entire statement as they do to nit pick out the things they care to agree with
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
Sometimes a prospective critic is simply too far removed from the target audience of the work, like on a fundamental level, and it makes it impossible to give them useful feedback. I think it's important to acknowledge that this can happen. It happens to me a lot and I just decline to give crits when it does.
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Yeah, like don't ask me to critique a comic about sports lmao
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
I agree on that notion, esepcially when seeing professional aritsts giving crits to folks starting out but it doesn't go as er ideal as they thought it would be
Deo101 [Millennium]
That's why I usually only seek out criticsm (for more than just general direction/advice) from people who's work I like
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
I remember reading advice on getting beta readers, and itâs really REALLY important that theyâre excited for your stuff. They want to make it better. They care. They can give critique, but they absolutely must be jazzed about your subject matter in some way, or else itâll be a slog for everyone.
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
for me, I have my peers who I contact daily and we give each other advice, tips
despite having er difference interests in fields, but we experienced a lot in our program lol
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yes... (Speaking of if anyone wanted to beta read my next comic uhhhh let me know id love to have u)
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
very good point claire
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
100 percent agree Get people who are excited and know your vision
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah I have a small group of writer friends who know all my goals and a lot of my stuff? So they make a very good little critique circle, and we all help eachother
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
I'm always ready to beta read if it's a concept I enjoy
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
like people who critique comics they hate. I'm like, damn, tough work but also ?? why
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
(Be careful about people who are excited about what they think is your vision.............)
Deo101 [Millennium]
Fish is this a callout for me
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
slightly?
Deo101 [Millennium]
Ahsjfkdjdkskdjdjdj
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
Keii I experienced the oppisisite like rip
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
it's just mystifying to me, I don't think it's wrong or anything
Deo101 [Millennium]
Also crona I'll send u when I'm at my comp
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
sure
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
What do you mean Tuyetnhi?
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
Ohh that would be oof to deal with Kei
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
I had to let a person down to reality bc I know they're excited about their idea but uhhhh
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
(Is it the fish romance?)
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
it wasn't engaging to me
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yes that one qjdjfkskdkk
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
nor my illustration friends
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
I donât have beta readers but I think thatâs how it all goes lol
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
and we were like
"AAAAAAA"
Deo101 [Millennium]
Oh that's awkward
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
Ooooooohhhhhhh... oof
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
I have a couple friends I send pages to sometimes but they're always really positive about it
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
It was a rough critique
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
Having creative friend circles is so essential for growth and screaming at eachothers works for motivation too
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yessss
Also just the ability to talk about your process without having to explain yourself
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
agreed lol
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
I occasionally tap my fiance's shoulder and shove my sketches in his face with zero context, just to make sure he can figure out what's going on without me explaining. Super helpful
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
I feel like I have a couple friends where, when I read their stuff, I know things that would amp their work up tenfold. But until they ask me... Iâm screaming inside lol
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
lol
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
my friend always makes me feel like i'm a better writer than i am because she thinks so much like me she gets everything i write perfectly lol. But then I post and the comments are like "wtf i'm confused"(edited)
eliushi [Keyspace]
Yeah feedback is most effective when both sides are open and invested
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
Claire Senpai Wants To Help
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
also same crona(edited)
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
Itâs not bad, I just go I THINK I CAN HELP YOU MAKE IT AWESOMER AHHHHHH
eliushi [Keyspace]
Claire senpaiiii
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
But until then I remain still and supportive
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
why don't you ask them "can i suggest things?"
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah I try and keep my mouth shut
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
or "do you want suggestions?"
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
lol
eliushi [Keyspace]
I usually say what I like about it first and then. Are you looking for feedback?
Deo101 [Millennium]
Tbh hearing "can I suggest things?" Usually comes off kinda like "I see stuff wrong with this :)" which can hurt a little even then
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
YEeeeah
đERROR404 đ
At least for my comic, i have sent bits and pieces for critique from creators i am friends with , but i'm really hesitant promoting myself because I don't feel like I'm not at a place to even get a critique i'll be able to make anything of. O(--( i really don't know what I'd do if someone tried to seriously analyze my plot and break down the story right now
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
It's really hard, because a lot of people (myself included) get scared when someone else asks, "Do you need help?"
Deo101 [Millennium]
I usually trust ppl to say whether they're looking for feedback
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
Its always so tricky to gague the reactions of that. Some people handle that better than others So i only offer when they open up
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
Based on how people can get about even the offer of critique, yeah, I tend not to say anything. Thatâs their baby. If they want to open that door, then Iâll poke my head in
eliushi [Keyspace]
True too. Iâm already in forums where feedback is wanted so Iâm already in selection bias
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Yeah, I like to only offer crits if someone is asking for it for that reason
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
for the record i'm always open to critiques
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
kinda mutal agreement on don't chime in unless asked lol
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah, at least in my groups we send things like "hey this and this are bothering me? Can you help?" And other than that it's just support
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Yeah, that's a good idea
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
for both parties. For me, If it's something that I need thoughts I ask but otherwise, lmao my social circles ask me for help for their art stuff
Deo101 [Millennium]
We never agreed on that btw it's just kinda how it goes
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
That's a nice group way to handle that AND make the space more breathable for others who are more nervous about crit work
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
exactly
eliushi [Keyspace]
Thereâs a time and place for everything and feedback is no different
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah! Like here we have seperate chats for help and sharing
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Yuss
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
When someone asks me if I'm open to suggestions, my reaction is usually "nOOoooOo..." but not always. I think it helps a ton if there's an existing rapport, like if I already know this person gets, REALLY gets, my work.
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
And that's okay Keii!
eliushi [Keyspace]
Yeah Iâm super thankful for my betas for that
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
yee same
eliushi [Keyspace]
Itâs very rewarding when people are also invested in your work to make it better within your means and style
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
Honestly u gotta do whats best for u and ur mindset in the end.
Deo101 [Millennium]
It also is a little but awkward to say "no I'm not open to suggestions' cause it feels like you're saying "I don't care to improve" when in reality it's more like "no... I'm happy with this and I don't want it to be soured"
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
I love the fact that if I post in #creator_art_share, nobody will critique me unless I ask. And if I post in #art_help, I can get that help. So incredibly nice
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
Yes! Thats very respectful
eliushi [Keyspace]
So key
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
Omg Deo.....such a mood LOL
Deo101 [Millennium]
I always feel so bad saying no thanks but it's like it looked good I thought
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
omg, I felt that in my soul
We beat ourselves up enough as it is
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
Sometimes i know my work can be farty but... I dont also want perfection in every facet of my pieces too and thats okay! Some are learning pieces, others more indulgent
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah!
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
I think I'd be very hesitant to accept ideas that will utterly break my core plot... unless someone comes out and outright tells me something about it is offensive or wrong or otherwise bad. But critique on the connective tissue between the bones, so to speak, heck yes. I've gotten some much better ideas from that.
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
e.e even if i post in art share i would be honored to receive a critique from any of you
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
Oh, if someone comes to me with suggestions that are that incompatible with my vision, I'm getting outta there.
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
but i don't wanna post every single thing i do in art help hm
but maybe i should
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
I am SO getting outta there.
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
I did had some suggestions that didn't... really help with my comic most of it are just comments and not pure criticism
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Just post it lol
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah it's probably best to leave crit in the crit section so as not to break that unspoken rule.
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
To signal to the rest of us
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
Yea your vision is key, and i find that people who crit the work need a basic understanding of it for it to be a True Crit
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
Yeah it's probably best to leave crit in the crit section so as not to break that unspoken rule.
good point
i wouldn't want people critiquing me to make others feel like it's okay to do that to everyone
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
A good attitude!!! Y'all are very respectable this is a wonderful topic
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
yeee
eliushi [Keyspace]
I think the best feedback is one where it makes your work become more effective within your vision. Sometimes itâs finding the betas who are invested but I also find betas who focus on different crafts also can offer a lot of wisdom. I find it comes down to being open and itâs never a bad thing to ask for clarification
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
[also writes this down for a potential lesson actvity for high schoolers] (edited)
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
Yeah, a critique is supposed to help the work become a better version of itself, not a better [something else]
Deo101 [Millennium]
Mostly with true beta reading I am looking for "how clear is my work coming off to someone who knows nothing of my lore and backstory etc?"
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
I like the idea of having at least one beta reader who's a writer, and at least one who's not. The writer can dissect things a bit more than a 'civilian' could while the civilian can look at surface-level things and react as the audience majority might.
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
multiple beta readers are a blessing lol
Deo101 [Millennium]
Cause with my friends, they already know everything I'm planning, so i worry a lot that they are putting together things that a regular reader wouldn't
So yeah same thing as a "civilian" reader, sort of!
eliushi [Keyspace]
For sure. Within my critique group I have novelists, webcomic creators and artists. Those who read the complete script and those who havenât. Itâs important to have all sides I find
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
Dang you people with your luxury of multiple beta readers... I don't even have one (but it's mostly my fault; my scripts are unreadable)
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
omg lol
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
i'm sure you could use many of us as beta readers if you wanted to!
varethane
that surface-level 'first gut reaction' crit can be SO useful
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
I change dialogue too frequently for a beta reader to have a fair chance, lol
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
I started early with one years ago, but now I have like 5-10ish but they can't help me at the same time lmao
varethane
I agree upthread with when it was said that some of the most helpful crit was given unintentionally lol
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
same. i asked some people, including deo and crona, for a beta read of a script a while back but then ended up changing most of it lol(edited)
eliushi [Keyspace]
Most of my betas I found in forums like these! Iâm sure a lot of us want to help each other out!
Deo101 [Millennium]
I usually only share stuff once I have at least a solid sketch and dialogue is in
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
so much changes in the thumbnail/layout stage for me. SO MUCH. whole scenes get swapped/cut/extended
I never keep it the same way
Deo101 [Millennium]
I don't like to share scripts cause also I don't usually script much anyways lol
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
@keiiâii (Heart of Keol) As a long-time reader of HoK, I would be more than happy to beta read if you ever wanted it. Just throwing that out there!
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
same Lazuli like
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
I'd love to beta read for anyone too
varethane
I prefer sharing sketched pages because my scripts usually change SO much in between being written and going onto the page
like, sometimes they're outright unrecognizable
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
@Deo101 [Millennium] Same. The couple times I really wasn't unsure about a scene, I had to find someone and give them cleaned up thumbnails
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah I don't share more than sketched pages with dialogue
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
SUPER cleaned up thumbnails
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
from thumbnail to final, like they aren't the same from before lmao
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
Most helpful critique for me was just someone engaging with the story. "Man I love - and -, they're such good friends, but - pisses me the fuck off" and that was my intention, but i realized it was coming on a bit stronger than i liked and changed the next scene dramatically to make a future plot point where the last character needs to be trusted feel more earned(edited)
varethane
(anyone who seriously is down for beta reading, I have 3 finished chapters burning a hole in my buffer hhnnnnggggg)
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah cause also like, 80% of the crit is usually "well this paneling is unclear" kind of stuff too
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
also i don't mind if anyone is asking me to beta read
Deo101 [Millennium]
Which you can't do from a script anyways
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
or (I don't usually do this often but)
I'm also a sensitivity beta reader too
so if you have questions about POC stuff, asian-american, er mixed-asian or mixed-black experiences
I'm willing to help lmao
but i'm just one perspective to the table
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
A lot of comments, not critiques, have influenced scenes I put later too. Things to clarify, expand, emphasize. I take every comment like that as an idea. I love knowing what the readers hope to learn.
eliushi [Keyspace]
Iâm in the midst of a 180k plus word count novel beta and alphaing a couple works but once thatâs all done, happy to take a look too
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
holy
Deo101 [Millennium]
Wowie
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
Getting trustful beta readers i gotta say again is so important bc sometimes when asking for some, u run into betas that are there to just exploit that privilege too (tho rare) And!!!! Be respectful of ur betas on the other side of the spectrum
Deo101 [Millennium]
Exploit how?
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
like to read your work early?
eliushi [Keyspace]
Definitely pick your betas wisely
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
Usually just the free ride of Knowing the Story or the opportunity to just Constantly Crit (non helpful) bc of personal reasons
Deo101 [Millennium]
Damn
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
I'm imagining having someone sneak in as a beta and reveal they're a rabid toxic fan trying to influence the plot to their liking. As an absolute worst scenario
Deo101 [Millennium]
Spooky
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
Yea.... There's def ppl out there that would do that THOUGH RARE again. I think that's more of like Competition in the field or spite? But ive heard it happening and its not cool
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
like people just looking for a free ticket to complain about your work?
i can see that
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
Oh yeah, I had folks like that before
after that I'm just like "thank you for your time" and block them after LMAO
Deo101 [Millennium]
That sucks :(
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
hhhhhhh
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
Yea And u can always tell a sincere crit from a one that comes from a place of malice and ill intent pretty easy.
eliushi [Keyspace]
Exactly
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
oof
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
Still!!! A horrible experience
Deo101 [Millennium]
:< yeah
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Yeah.. I've never had anything like that happen, but wow... that's a terrifying notion
eliushi [Keyspace]
You tend to want to know your betas more than just them being a reader too. I like to think my betas are my friends and itâs a two way street where I help them too
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
Some betas sign papers of confidentiality to avoid these instances of people running off with ur work too
eliushi [Keyspace]
There are paid betas but thatâs business side and yeah Krispy
Deo101 [Millennium]
/stress
eliushi [Keyspace]
I donât have them for mine
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
Its scary bc we're all so small and our work is mainly for free U have to be wary of this
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
I could easily see myself getting sucked into a bad situation like that I trust people too easily sometimes
but ugh... ya gotta learn
eliushi [Keyspace]
Itâs good to know the risks. That being said, I think the rewards of having a good beta far exceed the bad apples. You have to set good boundaries
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
Not that any of yall would do this omgjghg
Deo101 [Millennium]
Same Claire ajdjdnsdjjjdjdjdjddj
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
gonna steal all y'alls IDEAS
eliushi [Keyspace]
Itâs also totally valid to say, hey something came up and I canât beta anymore
Key is communication
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
lmao ya gotta kill me for my ideas
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
Isossn Watch out for that Claire lady
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
https://tenor.com/view/laugh-giggle-mutley-dick-dastardly-snicker-gif-5552702
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
Omg Eli yesssSSSSS that!!! Is important for both creator and beta to have that communication
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Oh no, my precious ideas!!!
Deo101 [Millennium]
Eh even if u steal my ideas you can never steal my characterizations!
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
just steal everything and make a horrible hodgepodge of all of our webcomics, like some sick frankenstein's monster
Deo101 [Millennium]
I don't think my ideas are the best part of my stories anyways :P
Ahsjdjfjdjfjdjfjdififiididkfkdje Frankensteins webcomic
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
my ideas are relevant to my cultural background so I'm like lmao
eliushi [Keyspace]
I learned from my novel days that ideas are dime and dozen and itâs the execution that counts(edited)
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
I would actually love that tbh
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
Oh no id read it tho XD
Deo101 [Millennium]
Massive crossover event
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
YES
PLEASE
eliushi [Keyspace]
Super smash bros when
varethane
lmao
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
hahaha
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
I really want people going into healthcare to critique my personal statement, but I won't send it to anyone because I've legitimately heard of people stealing others' personal statements and getting both people rejected
Deo101 [Millennium]
Wow
eliushi [Keyspace]
Thatâs scary and unfortunate
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
ooof
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
it's almost worse than stealing a story idea because you're stealing like
someone's life story??
or their personality??
it's extremely strange to me
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah that's ??????
eliushi [Keyspace]
I would consider having a mentor look over your statement but thatâs veering off creator babble territory
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
oh i am doing that and very very thankful to them
Deo101 [Millennium]
Good suggestion and good point
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
After recently seeing a whole comic style/theme completely and obviously lifted from another one... yeah, the things that make your comic yours? They can absolutely be stolen whole-cloth
It's scary
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
oh no
god what even is the fun in that??
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
I don't know. I really don't.
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
you know what i want to spend years doing? telling a story that's already been told, except worse!
varethane
D:
Deo101 [Millennium]
I've had someone steal designs before
varethane
dpsofasdj I am so curious about these cases now aaahhh
Deo101 [Millennium]
Ppl do steal stuff. But what sucks for them is I'm the one with a brain and I can make new things
eliushi [Keyspace]
Iâve seen similar styles but have not seen a purposeful recreation of anotherâs style whether as impersonation or plagiarism
Haruh2 (Colony Life)
i just read a webtoon that was "inspired" by an anime with many ideas from anime too
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
It was a case where I always thought the two looked surprisingly similar, but then... yeah, you learn more things and you go AW GOD OKAY
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
this, and offensive stuff, is a case where i think unsolicited critique is 100% okay
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah, though then it's the line of "is it offensive just to me? Or overall?"
Though I guess saying "this offended me" isn't horrible or whatever
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
i think of the trend of lgbt youtubers making videos making fun of anti-lgbt crap and that's a case where i'm like yeah! pile on!
You have a good point and there are cases where something is almost objectively offensive
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah, and then there are other cases where ppl are offended by how I've decided to have no homophobia where it's like "okay sure but I'm not doing anything wrong"
But yeah there are definitely times where it's like "no that's bad for sure and I'm allowed to be critical of and mad about it"
I also think there's a difference between criticizing mass media and criticizing independent media
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
Wait What what omg???? Thats???? So backwards
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
well, here's an anti-critique. it offends me when someone says that being lgbt must be hard and sad all the time!
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah! I'd agree with that LOL
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
can I just be happy
as a bi woman
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
"IT'S NOT LIKE MY LIFE THEREFORE IT'S INACCURATE"
Deo101 [Millennium]
Ahdjfjskfkdkckskfksdksk yeah
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
So true tho!!
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
God, I hate that argument
Deo101 [Millennium]
Though I do think that its worth it to open yourself up to that kind of critique to potentially reach the people who do need your story
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
Yes def agree
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
True true
If there's a blind spot you're missing, then for sure
Deo101 [Millennium]
Well, I was meaning more like "you can't please everyone, but that shouldn't stop you from trying your best anyways!"
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
Ah! also true
Deo101 [Millennium]
Like not necessarily blind spots, but more like. Some people will be mad no matter what sorta thing
Yee
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
so tru
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
Yeah for sure. I've tried to cover my bases on certain things in my own work, but I'm sure if it ever gets bigger, someone will be unhappy about something.
I'm not ready for that day, but... maybe it'll come
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah. Like I said I had someone get mad at me for not having homophobia
Where it's like... Okay stop reading then cause this isn't the story for you
Actually my friends replied to then and they did kinda turn around on their thinking, I think, so that was nice!
There's something I'm bad at for the question, is replying to my comments
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
oh? :0
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
okay sometimes i've said to my friends "yo weird ass comment, right?" and they've gone and defended me like way extra hard
i'm always grateful but also a little (edited)
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah same. .
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
too mch man
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah it's like Thank you but
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
I do have some weird comments but the ones that I just kinda trying to offend me
I don't look at it till after a few months and respond to them calmly lmao
no point for me to just get rilied up for someone trying to get on my nerves but rip that's probably just me and how I deal with that stuff in irl too
I don't let my friends go after bozos lmao
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah for me I just like. Try really hard to be diplomatic, I guess? But it takes a lot of energy
When what I WANT to say is "lol read another comic then" or something but I try to think of a way to be nice
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
yee I understand on that. for me I'm just say it as it is if at's the moment but for more heated comments I address them after a few months lol
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
I haven't gotten any weird randos yet apart from... one legendary one But things are always calmer on your own site far away from Tapas/Webtoons
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
I agree on that but lmao
I did had one angry commenter going agro for few of my pages
and I looked at it and I was like "Oh worm man"
they were just reacting to my characters being shit LMAO
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
OH WORM MAN
very good
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
I ignore it tbh. I recently had someone comment "All lives matter" at the end of my comic because I included "Black lives matter" at the end. And I honestly knew i didn't have the mental fortitude to explain to them why that was so rude and missing the point.
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
lol my mom is saying that stuff and i'm just like :|
okay mother
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
I guess for writing for me, now thinking about it is that
on the prompt: I don't respond quick and I'm not really active much on interaction but I want to try more
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
I haven't gotten any weird randos yet apart from... one legendary one But things are always calmer on your own site far away from Tapas/Webtoons
I really haven't either though! Just a few people saying mildly :| things, no hate or anything. Wt is not always as scary as its reputation
or maybe i'm in the eye of the hurricane idk
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
lol
I have had mostly good experiences too
Deo101 [Millennium]
I've had mostly good too!
I know I complain a lot but really I'm just salty and that's just a few bad things here and there
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
The comment I was thinking about earlier was just an innaccurate interpretation of characters' feelings. They thought some people had a romantic history. I wasn't going to respond but my friend went all "if you actually read the comic you would see th- " and I was thinking omg tone it down a bit
Deo101 [Millennium]
Bajsjdjekdjdkdjd
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
never underestimate the Friend Army
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
I had a reader I didn't know defend me in the comments once. The original commenter was complaining about the length of my updates, and the other reader started railing on them. It was powerful lmao. I didn't even need to say anything
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
Oh! same
Deo101 [Millennium]
I've had some ppl defend me or explain for me and it's like. Idk a special kind of magic ahahahah
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Oh for sure! It feels magical to know that some of your readers passionately love your work
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
Update-length complainers are so cathartic to smack down. Not that I've done it, I just... like seeing it
You're getting a free comic. Made by a human with a life. Chill
sssfrs (JOE IS DEAD)
All my comments are normal where are my weirdos
boogeymadam
someone take some of my weirdos, my comic attracts them
but not really because i accidentally gave claire one of my weirdos and i feel Sooooo bad
Haruh2 (Colony Life)
i feel im still a long way off from getting anyone with my comic
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
weirdos are contagious apparently
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
You don't have to be popular to get a weirdo
Sometimes like... you could have 1 regular commenter and that person is a weirdo
or not even a commenter, you show your work to a RL friend before posting it online, and the friend takes off their mask dramatically, and reveals their True Identity as a professional weirdo
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
for real, i was posting on SJ and had all of like a dozen followers and one guy went through and heavily critiqued a ton of my pages
Like technical stuff like paneling and flow of action?
Also said my female lead looks like a man and my animation was nauseating lol
Haruh2 (Colony Life)
heh well after i do this current update im working on, i'll be scraping how ive been doing updates and following some tutorials i finally found
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
I like critique but even so that guy was :|
boogeymadam
omg noooo sorry that happened fish! D: unsolicited critics are some of the worst
DanitheCarutor
I guess that is the one thing I've been lucky with. I actually don't mind unsolicited critique, but I've never gotten any outside of one time someone corrected my character's grammar in the comments. Commentary like that is way more welcome than the occasional anonymous hate comment, and malicious article calling me a fetishist, which is all entertaining in its own way but not as easy to deal with. Now that critique is brought up I'm reminded that I need to work on how I respond to it. Like, I actually get kind of excited when someone takes the time to break down my stuff (even if it totally misses the mark with what I'm trying to accomplish), but I end up responding with a novel and sometimes it's worded in a way that sounds like I'm upset. I need to get better at keeping it short and sweet.
Feather J. Fern
I raise my hand to say I can't draw hands for the life of me still after praticing for a long time. I used all the techiques, tricks, and still my hands are just butts.
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
make a universe where people have butts for hands
keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
This is a really minor one and thankfully easy to correct after publishing, but: my ESL-ness shows sometimes, especially with prepositions and articles. My English isn't terrible; there's just some occasional "wait did they mean 'on' where they put 'in'..." That's on the surface level. I also can't do that 'just write the dialog and see how the characters bounce off each other' thing in English. I hadn't thought much about that until I started writing a story in Korean, and I was surprised how much easier it was to get flowin' with the dialog. I'm not toooo concerned about this one, as Get Flowin' is just one way of writing a scene. But it is a thing.
Feather J. Fern
Eightfish stop calling me out that I can draw butts better than hands okay(edited)
shadowhood {SunnyxRain}
feather have fun drawing the gluteus maximus

keiiâii (Heart of Keol)
I have stubby baby hands as well as double jointed fingers, so I'm very aware my hands aren't "average" looking. Yet if I don't pay attention, I tend to draw hands kind of like mine
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Hahahaha, Deo!!
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
wow so useful i should measure my hands

Round of Randoms #1 - Shorties

The one with the skeleton, the cat boys, and the card game.
Look who's back!
After a much-needed break to cool off from the Aikatsu marathon, here I again to delight the world with my unnecessary opinions. XD
You may be asking yourself, what is this? Well, I was thinking of what to do to come back to the blog, but still on my break mindset and I didn't want to get back to my regular stuff. So I thought about it and decided to get back to my roots and one of the reasons why I created this blog in the first place and went down on my anime list and see what was there that I could watch and bring to here. I've made a huge list of things, divided them into categories, and I'm planning to watch them in between the regular shows I comment here. I was lazy and pretty much only picked stuff that came out this year, but is still a somewhat diverse range of the usual things I talk about here.
Since I wanted something quick and easy to do at first I went with my "shorties" category that is composed of shows with a run time of 15 minutes or less per episode, and "one-shot" OVAs, in other words, things that I could watch on a single day with not much trouble. These are "reviews" of the entire season so they won't be as detailed, but that was never the point of these to begin with, If there's a show on my list that I have a lot to talk about I'll probably do it on a separate post.
Anyway, let's begin.
MYSTERIA Friends
Starting off is MYSTERIA Friends (or Manaria Friends in the original). This wasn't a show that was on my list actually, but once I saw that it was only 10 episodes of 15 minutes each and that both Yoko and Nana were voicing characters on this show I was "okay, I need to watch this now". I had no previous knowledge of anything related to this show and I was kinda excited to see what it was about, I don't know what I was expecting from it, but in reality, I got really disappointed.
Like, the show technically is gorgeous, I think that because of the shorter airing time they could pay more attention to the drawing and animation and you get stunned by the visuals. The soundtrack is also pretty decent, there's nothing exceptional aside of maybe the insert song Nana's character sings in one the episodes, but the general background music is pretty effective on putting yourself on that world.

With that being said, this is probably where the positives end. The show has no plot, which in itself it's not a problem, most of this short shows are episodic anyway and that's one of the charms of this type of anime, but in this case it's a problem because it just seems empty, the show seems to be trying to talk about inter-species relationships, but it actually never touches on that what gives this "empty media" vibe. This ties in with another problem that is the fact that this fantastic, magical setting has no purpose of being there other than aesthetics, I feel that the excuse of going "magic medieval" was we gonna show how this human and this half-demon can get along and bring peace and harmony to this world, but they never touch on the topic and it becomes pretty obvious that they only went with that route because the author has a thing for girl dragons.
Which ties in with my biggest problem, the useless ecchi. Honestly, the amount of ecchi they got to put in such a short amount of time is unbelievable, like, right on the second episode Grea is pain because she's molting, but the scene is shot as like she's having sex and the moans are more like pleasure moans rather than moans of someone who's in pain, and is just so uncomfortable, and to add more into this weirdness Anne steals the shed skin of Grea's tail and in the final episode she's smelling that like those pervs smelling on panties and IT'S SO AWKWARD. This threw me off so much, I think I only got through because the show was very short and I know the suffering would be very low, otherwise I would definitely have dropped it right on episode 2.

Skull-face Bookseller Honda-san
Honda-san was that show that I had always seen people commenting on and was very interested in watching since the beginning, but I never did because I'm lazy, so when I decided to do this I knew I had to put the show on the list and finally watch it, and that's a decision I definitely don't regret making.
Honestly, this show is so good. It's not that comedy that will let you laughing your pants off, but it doesn't mean that it ain't funny. It's mentioned in the show that the manga that originated from this anime was written by Honda-san himself about his experiences working on a bookstore, I don't know how truthful the stories are, but is this sense of "damn this really happens irl" that makes everything way much funnier and it is a true joy to watch. The anime isn't ambitious, I don't think it's trying to convey a message or make a commentary or anything, but this doesn't come as a detriment for the show, this anime didn't need any of that and they don't try to make it be about something big. It's just a wholesome show about life that is really comforting, especially if you're an adult that already had some experience with retailing.
What else do I have to say? I love the style, I love the soundtrack, I love the weird situation that happens, and the characters are just amazing, aside of Honda-san I love manager Armor she's lots of fun, and Chief Pestmask (who's VA is, look at that, Hikasa Yoko once again) who doesn't appear a lot, but when she comes she sure leaves an impression on you. This show did crush my fantasies of working on a bookstore someday, but I loved every second of it anyway. XD

Hey, Your Cat Ears Are Showing! Season 2
So when I heard Hora Mimi was getting a second season, I was both excited and apprehensive. This one of the rare short shows that have an episodic narrative but that has an overall plot to the whole thing, and I was quite satisfied with the ending of season 1, it was sweet and heartwarming as the rest of the series was and I really didn't think a second season was needed, thus I really didn't watch it while it was airing. But this was the perfect opportunity for me to finally watch it.
And this season was a very good surprise, it expanded on what the first season had built and it became three times gayer by giving Dong Dong and Jin Zhu partners, Jin Zhu partner being an Ear People but from another species, which made this season even more fun and cute. The final arc of this season where they established that Da Shu and Miao had met each other before the events of season 1 is probably the only thing I don't like about this sequel because on my eyes it looks silly, but I wouldn't call it a negative that renders the show. Hora Mimi remains a very adorable, heartwarming show that everyone definitely should check it out.

The Girl From the Other Side
Totsukuni no Shoujo was never on my radar for mangas so I wasn't aware of its existence. A few months back I saw someone reblogging gifs from this OVA on my dash and I got really intrigued by it, the aesthetic was kinda similar to Ancient Magus Bridge but it was darker and it had this antique style to it that made me fall in love instantly.

Since I don't know the manga, I'm not familiar with the characters and their stories, but even though I was in the dark I could grasp the concept without major difficulties because the characters are very expressive, and the music is very well used on passing to was what is going on with those characters. I thought an anime with no dialogue would be boring, but this OVA was very captivating, not just by its visuals but also by the narrative and the music that got me hooked from beginning to end. I feel like this is a very shallow review of the thing, but I don't think I'm smart enough to elaborate more on what to say about this show.
I'm not familiar with the manga and I don't know how things work there, neither I know if such style could hold up for an entire season, but I definitely wanna see more, and I'll definitely look up the manga if I can make my tablet work again someday.

Zenonzard THE ANIMATION - Episode 0
And to wrap up we have Zenonzard, which was another show that I wasn't aware of until I decided to do this thing and it's only here because the poster looked cool, and it was officially available on youtube with subs and no region locks so I thought, "why not?"
This is probably the weirdest of the bunch since it's a show based on a card game, and I haven't watched one of these in ages, and it's weird, but I was kinda into it? Like, I don't like that most of the girls in this show have ginormous breasts and this thing of a female coming to an apparently normal boy saying "I choose you" seems that it's going to backfire and will create a huge mess in the future, but as the episode was progressing I was getting more and more into it?
The plot doesn't seem as good, if they even have a plot. It does a crap job at explaining what this game is and how it works, and also the CG used for the monsters is horrendous. But it got me interested, it had some great music playing and I think this is what caught me the most, even though there's one song, that I believe is sung by Nanase who did voices for Aikatsu, that I feel like it was very misplaced. I also like the futuristic aesthetic, I'm a sucker for these things and I was pleased for the most part of it.
I don't know if this will become a thing, but if they actually release an anime and if they publish it on youtube like what they've done with this ONA/Special/Prequel? I may keep watching it. Which comes to as a surprise to me.
And this was the first Round of Randoms (provisory name) of this blog. I quite enjoyed doing this thing, I think I'm gonna keep doing it to always have something different and new around here. What did you think of it? Have you watched any of these shows? What are your opinions about it? Is there any show you have to recommend? And what's a good name for this new thing I'm trying to do? Thank you so much for sticking with me until the end, and I'll see you guys at another time.

This Week in Caps: Week 5
Welcome to This Week in Caps, a weekly newsletter where I recap everything important thatâs been going on in the world of the Washington Capitals this past week.
This Weekâs Games
11/01/18 @ Montreal Canadiens
After a quick stop at home for practice, the Caps finished up their road trip to take on a speedy Montreal Canadiens club. Brooks Orpik was out with injury, meaning that Madison Bowey got into the lineup on a pairing with Christian Djoos, and we got to see the blessed return of Alternate Captain John Carlson.
The Caps did not get off to a great start. Just two and a half minutes into the game, Jesperi Kotkaniemi beat Braden Holtby five-hole, scoring his first NHL goal and giving the Habs a 1-0 lead. Lars Eller would bring the Caps back even just after six minutes in, firing home the rebound that came off a blocked Matt Niskanen shot. About two minutes later, Evgeny Kuznetsov got frustrated with Brendan Gallagher, did some mild tusseling, and the two went off for roughing, and the game would be four-on-four for two minutes. The rest of the period would be rather uneventful other than Montreal being the much faster team and dictating most of play.
If the first period started bad, then the second period started worse. Thirty seconds into the period, Tomas Tatar cleaned the puck out of the air and sent it to Brendan Gallagher up close, who scored to make it a 2-1 Montreal lead. Gallagher scored again just two and a half minutes later, when he took the carom off the boards and made it 3-1 Montreal.
But this time, the Caps would response. At the 6:49 mark, Kuznetsov sent the puck to Alex Ovechkin on a two-on-one, and he sent it home to cut the lead to 3-2. A minute later, Eller sent home a loose puck to score his second of the game and tie it 3-3. Five minutes later, Dmitry Orlov threw a puck at the net that hit off Ovechkin and went into the net; Ovechkin tallied his second of the game, and the Caps now led 4-3. But holding the lead wouldnât be easy; Kuznetsov found himself in the box once again, this time for holding, and this time the Caps had to kill a penalty, helped out by an amazing block from Michal Kempny, which hit him high but left him no worse for the wear. Eller also committed an infraction, heading to the box with three seconds left in the second, giving the Habs almost a full power play to start the third, which the Caps ended up killing.
The Caps almost held the lead and made it out. But they were completely outplayed in the third, and by the end of the period they paid for it. With three minutes left in the game, Kotkaniemi jammed the puck home from traffic in the crease and it trickled past Holtby, giving him his second of the game and tying the game 4-4. For a second, it looked like the Caps would make it to overtime, but Max Domi scored off Holtbyâs glove with 22 seconds left in the game. And to make matters worse, Joel Armia scored off the faceoff into the empty net just two seconds later to give Montreal the 6-4 win.
The Caps ended up getting badly outshot 44-31, but they had the significant advantage on faceoffs at 61.0% (led by Nicklas Backstrom at 76.5%). The Caps didnât get a chance to exercise their potent power play until their only chance more than halfway through the third, and ended up going 0/1 on the night. But their penalty kill was also stellar, keeping the Habs to 0/2 on their chances. Holtby made 38/43 saves.
Niskanen played some good defense, Eller had a good all-around game, and Holtby was good and made some very great saves. But overall, the defense let him down, and the Caps put up an ugly one. They had a chance to bank those two points, but they squandered it away. The Habs were the faster team and made them look bad early and in the third period. This one just felt bad.
11/03/18 vs Dallas Stars
The Dallas Stars are in town, so guess what that means? Thatâs right, pain and suffering. This matchup has rarely ever gone well for the Capitals ever in their history; so would the Capitals succumb to the Dallas Stars Syndrome tonight? Time to find out. Additionally, Brooks Orpik was yet again out, so Madison Bowey would be in and partnered with Christian Djoos again, and we would once again be blessed with Alternate Captain John Carlson.
At the start of the game, it looked like the Dallas Stars Syndrome was back and better than ever. Halfway through the first, Jason Spezza got a breakaway and beat Braden Holtby five-hole. Ten seconds later, Tyler Pitlick intercepted an errant Holtby clearing attempt and scored on the wraparound while Holtby was scrambling back to his net, and suddenly it was 2-0 Stars, and it felt like we were back to the same old thing again.
It turns out playing the Stars means that the entire game is going to be weird. Forty seconds into the second period, Nicklas Backstrom scored on a weird, short-side, no-angle goal to make it 2-1. A strong start to the period. But the Stars must legitimately do something to Holtbyâs brain; after the bad clear in the first, he high-sticked an opposing player three minutes into the second, a penalty which had to be served by Chandler Stephenson. That particular play didnât hurt them, but halfway through the period the Caps turned it over behind the net and it found its way to Jamie Benn, who made it 3-1 Stars.
But the Caps, somehow, found some fight. Two minutes later, Brett Connolly batted the puck out of the air and into the net baseball-style to make it 3-2. And in the third period on the power play, Evgeny Kuznetsov scored another no-look, no-angle goal to tie the game 3-3.
Of course, a game this crazy would require overtime, and it was an incredibly high-paced, exciting overtime period. The height of the excitement came when Carlson hooked Tyler Seguin on a breakaway. He was rewarded a penalty shot, which Holtby stopped with the glove. But after all that excitement and those weird goals, the game ended on a turnover at the blue line when Jakub Vrana lost his balance, and Jason Dickinson scored to win the game for the Stars 4-3.
The Caps were outshot 37-32 (7-1 in overtime), won 53.4% of faceoffs, went 1/3 on the power play, and their penalty kill remained perfect, keeping the Stars to 0/2 on their power play chances. Holtby saved 33/37.
Dmitrij Jaskin had a great game defensively, and played in by far his best game thus far. Bowey also had his best game as a Cap, creating great offensive chances and getting lots of shots, and making great blocks and defensive plays; he and Djoos had a good game.
Ultimately, even though the Caps made a comeback, the Dallas Stars Syndrome was too much to overcome and made a victim of the Caps again. But, considering the horrible start and the fact that itâs the Stars, getting the one point is a heck of a consolation.
Current record: 5-4-3
Whatâs Going on in the World of the Caps
Roster Moves
There were a flurry of roster moves that happened this week. Brooks Orpik didnât play in either game this week, so the Capitals called up Aaron Ness on October 31 to sit the bench as the seventh defenseman. He was sent back down to Hershey on November 4. Also on October 31, Travis Boyd was sent to Hershey on a conditioning assignment, as he is getting ready to come back from his injury. In his two games on the stint, he recorded one assist. And on November 4, Nathan Walker was placed on waivers, presumably to make room for Boydâs return. As I write this, there is no word on whether he cleared or not.
Bowey and Connolly Participate in Playworks Hockey Extravaganza
On October 29, Madison Bowey and Brett Connolly participated in Playworks Washington, D.C.'s annual Hockey Extravaganza at Payne Elementary School in Washington, D.C. You can check the details out here.
Ovechkin and ASHA
On October 30 after practice, Alex Ovechkin skated with kids from the American Special Hockey Association (ASHA) at Medstar Capitals Iceplex. This is the fifth consecutive year Ovechkin has been involved with the event, and you can check out the details here.
Wilson Update
Tom Wilsonâs appeal of his suspension was heard by a neutral arbitrator on October 31. There has been no ruling as of yet.

Player of the Week
Dmitrij Jaskin is finally getting comfortable, and by far had his best week as a Washington Capital. He has played in nine games so far this season, including the two this week, and is looking better and better each game. After playing eight pretty good minutes against the Habs, his time on ice rocketed up to fifteen minutes against the Stars. The game against the Stars was by far his best, looked very impressive, and caught the attention of the coaching staff. Defense is the main part of his game; he was on ice for only one goal against in Montreal, and none against Dallas, coming mostly in neutral and defensive zone deployment.
Social Media Post of the Week
Another player makes an advertising deal and falls victim to endless roasting by his teammates.

Living the Dream
When I was a kid, I frickin' loved Super Mario Bros. I loved it so much, I immediately came up with ways to improve it. I decided that one day, I was gonna create a Mario game with, like, all the stuff I wanted to see in a Mario game. Super Mario Bros. was just a computer program, after all, and I had burgeoning programming skills in BASIC and assembly. How hard could it be?! I began making drawings of the things I planned to include -- new power-ups, enemies, and characters. Some of them -- like a new power-up that would turn Mario into "'Lectric Mario", who can shoot sparks that are limited in flight distance compared to fireballs, but travel in a straight line and through solid obstacles -- I still think are cool. Others... not so much. For example there was going to be an enemy called "Mr. Dobalina". Yes, I named him after the title character from that Del Tha Funkee Homosapien song[0]. He was going to be a middle-aged man in a tacky beige suit[1], and he would chase Mario down attempting to sell him insurance. I think he would have worked a bit like the Super Mario World enemy Chargin' Chuck -- quick, aggressive pursuit pattern, takes a few stomps to defeat. Some of them were attempts to address what I felt were shortcomings with the original game. For example, one thing I really hated in Super Mario Bros. was pits, so I was going to give Mario the option to equip items, one of which was a grappling hook, so that if Mario fell into a pit he could perform a "last minute save" by deploying the hook, grappling onto the nearest ledge, and climbing the rope as he would a vine.
It's a dream I never entirely let go of. High school, then college, then life happened, and my Mario game took the shape of one thing or another all the while. Back-burnered but not really abandoned. During this time, I also grew up. I never lost my love for games and gaming, but I got different things out of a game as I grew older. One thing I realized was that a good game is not just a bag of mechanics and challenges. The very best games carefully choose these things and match them to one another. The pits in Super Mario Bros. are an integral part of the experience. Removing them, or even bestowing an optional easy out for them like the grappling hook, changes the game significantly. Changing anything about that game, no matter how small, changes the whole game -- for example, Super Mario Bros. puts the player in a unique relationship with power-ups that its successors never really replicated, wherein the fire flower is a reward for platforming skill that allows you to cheese through some of the more annoying obstacles like Hammer Bros. and even Bowser. But in order to keep it you had to remain unscathed for as long as you kept playing, else you would either die or become small and have to find the flower again. Bros. 3 and World, by contrast, almost always let you start a level with the power-up you needed to hand, either through the item menu or by visiting a previous level, topping up on power-ups, and exiting early. So simply by changing the available power-ups and how they are accessible, successors to Super Mario Bros. become fundamentally, substantively different in character.
The cool thing about all of them is not necessarily the power-ups, the levels, or the enemies. Those things are cool, but they're not the essential thing that makes these games awesome. The essence of Mario is in the adventure Mario embarks on, and the precision platforming necessary to succeed in that adventure -- negotiating obstacles and enemies quickly and almost pixel-accurately, with a simple but deep moveset.
In thinking about this I realized that the Mario game I dreamed of writing as a kid is coming to fruition now -- but it's not a Mario game at all. (That would create copyright problems, something 12-year-old me couldn't appreciate.) It's called NullAwesome and it stars a little rad green dude named Lorn Zender. But the way Lorn jumps -- that's a Mario jump. It even has jump aftertouch that feels about right. The way he moves, the level layout (such as it is so far) and how the elevators move -- those are all Mario-influenced elements. There are other inspirations as well, most notably Dangerous Dave -- written by a man who also just wanted to make a Mario game, John Romero[2] -- and OddWorld, and of course Watch_Dogs for the concept.
But yeah, this is basically the realization of a childhood dream for me, albeit taking a form I could never have anticipated. I'm pretty excited nevertheless. I just hope I can do kid-me proud.
I'm currently in the process of linking "things" together, so that hack targets can propagate state changes to objects they're linked to. This allows you to manipulate elevators and other moving obstacles by hacking their linked nodes. I'll check it in once it's in a working state. Stay tuned.
[0] And Del himself got the name from the late Peter Tork on the Monkees track "Zilch", in which all four Monkees rhythmically repeat random spoken phrases they heard somewhere before. Somewhere, the real Mr. Bob Dobalina, perhaps long dead by now, might've lamented his dubious immortalization.
[1] I thought it hilarious that in an era where video game enemies were mainly soldiers, thugs, mutants, or monsters, Bowser would recruit an ordinary, lame guy in a suit to go after Mario. My sense of humor at age 12 was... weird.
[2] John Romero and John Carmack actually did successfully begin a port of Super Mario Bros. 3 for the PC -- only to be turned down by Nintendo. They used the engine for the unfinished game to create the critically acclaimed Commander Keen series and bootstrapped Id Software in the process.

3. OCEAN'S DEPTH.
Genre: marine biologist AU
Pairing: Bambam x reader
Word count: 2.2K
0. Synopsis // 1. Whales // 2. Dolphins. // 3. Ocean's depth.
(( I apologise for the long wait, it was not planned at all. Uni is in full swing, I am in my final year so the thesis writing is giving me a little headache. I hope this part will still be somehow enjoyable! Please let me know your thoughts! ))
- - - OCEAN'S DEPTH - - -Â
You were tapping your foot against the warm pavement the next day in the docks. The weather was still shiny, pleasant and ever so welcoming.
You were supposed to have a good mood, considering all of these aspects.
You felt like a piece of a rotten tuna tin.
Exactly like rotten tuna tin, whatever it was supposed to mean.
"Where is he?!" you shouted angrily to your two colleagues who were looking bored and kept murmuring among each other, snickering quietly.
"Calm down," said Jaebeom and pressed the side button on his iPhone to check the time. He pushed it back into his back pocket of his jeans. "His late just 15 minutes."
Jackson laughed in disbelief. "Just 15 minutes."
You glued your strict stare at the cheerful man and he just shook his head, not bothering to talk to you more.
"Well, if he isn't coming in five more minutes, we are leaving."
"But boss, even if we leave in five minutes we will still be there 30 minutes early," replied Jaebeom in a diplomatic tone.
Jackson snickered again.
You sighed, combing your hand through your already messy hair. "Are you making fun of me? Do you think this is funny?"
"No, not at all, " replied Jaebeom, coughing away his giggle.
"Look, " you started, holding your hand out." You can think whatever you want to, but the fact is that we should be there a little bit earlier to make sure everything goes smoothly. As you can see, this duck head is late anyway. This is why we have to be there a little bit earlier."
"A little bit, " mumbled Jackson to himself.
Jaebeom started to laugh loudly, not bothering to hold back anymore.
As much as you liked to see your forever cold and reserved colleagues laugh, you did not appreciate it one bit at the moment.
" Shut up, Jackson, " you snapped. " You don't let me breathe even for a little while right? You always have to push me down."
He looked at your hurt face and before he could argue in any possible way, from the distance you hear rushed steps and a very tired looking Bambam. He was trying to adjust his bag on his shoulder as his hair was a big mess.
"I'm here! I'm coming! Oh, thanks for waiting for me!" he breathed as he finally arrived.
"Good." You turned around and marched forward towards the kindergarten that you hated so much at the moment. Youngjae was going to pay a big price for letting his mouth talk so much.
If Jackson were a dog, he would have his ears pressed to the sides of his head, his tail between his legs and lowered head. There wasn't a minute when you wouldn't fight these days despite how hard and cold you both were to each other.
He still wouldn't tell you what was pissing him off so much about you and you certainly didn't want to ask about that kind of thing. This way you were aware you were annoying him and that was more than enough.
You all made your way to the kindergarten and to your pleasure, you were quickly ushered in, the kids already waiting.
"Soon is never soon enough, Dr Im," you muttered to Jaebeom. Before he could retort something too sophisticated for you, you turned quickly to your team, mostly focusing your attention to your two colleagues rather than Bambam who was smiling the whole time as he was observing the kids' drawings. "Alright, we literally have like five minutes to discuss whose gonna talk about what-"
"Y/N," you heard your name. Youngjae's mum was standing next to you, her frame tall and her facial features kind. "I'm afraid you will have to go in now. The kids are waiting and they are restless."
"Yes but-"
"Alright, then there is no time to waste!" shouted Bambam, suddenly paying attention and soon he was entering the little hall kids had there for their performances.
Jackson snickered as he followed Jaebeom and BamBam. "So much for authority, huh."
A tiny growl escaped your lips, startling you. Damn. Now the game was on. You would ruin Jackson for sure.
The kids greeted you politely, most of them curiously looking at the blonde haired Bam.
While Jaebeom looked uncomfortable and seemed like dying inside from the attention, Jacskon was also naturally swayed with the kids as he was smiling brightly, waving at them.
"Everyone, let me introduce you these marine biologists," started Youngjae's mother, her voice a pleasant baritone. "Dr Y/N is The leader of the marine research institute here in Mokpo and Dr Jackson and Dr Jaebeom are her colleagues, great experts. Dr Bambam is a world famous marine biologist from Thailand so make sure to treat him with respect."
"Are we considered trash next to him?" muttered Jackson as he had his bright smile plastered on his face.
You bumped your elbow into his ribs quite hardly which made him wince with surprise. He widened his eyes at you, but you had a stern look already focused on the wall opposite you.
"Now I will let our biologists take over the talking and please participate actively!"
Youngjae's mum nodded at you with a supportive smile and you made sure to thank kindly before reaching for the microphone. "Hello, everyone! I'm Y/N and I would like to start with a question for all of you. Please raise your hands if you want to talk, alright?" you asked with a thumb up but when you didn't get any feedback you laughed awkwardly. "Alright! So, what do you understand under marine biology or marine research?"
You had a weird feeling these questions were not exactly meant for such a young audience as these four-year-olds who barely knew their mother's name but you were serious about doing your job professionally.
One little boy in the front row raised his hand shyly. "I think you work with dolphins."
You swayed your head from side to side. "Yes, could be also."
"That's totally true!" exclaimed Bambam. "And you know what? Let me tell you something that I'm sure you didn't know about whales." The way he was talking made kids much more interested compared to the poker faces they were giving you.
"The whales are these veeery big animals, right?" asked Bambam, motioning with his hands. "We also call them mammals. They can be much bigger than this whole kindergarten! And the important thing to know about them is that their poop is needed for the ocean's ecosystem."
You snapped your head to Bambam, not liking the direction he was going. On the other side Jaebeom and Jackson were also listening as intently as the kids.
"So how exactly does this work, hm? Well, when the whales poop it's really big and can create a big mess." Kids started to laugh, supported by Bambam. "Their poop contains lots of important microscopic creatures that are beneficial for other fish! For instance, phytoplankton is a crucial part of the ocean's ecosystem and some underwater animals live off of it."
"Eeeeeeeeew," kids whined but laughed loudly, scrunching up their noses.
BamBam laughed too, extremely pleased with himself. Jackson and Jaebeom had a light grin, also liking the playful way Bam introduces whale's poop.
"Another thing we have to watch out for are coral reefs," started Jackson his part. The k god it was an appropriate topic. "Do you know what are coral reefs right?"
There was a lady sitting by with a laptop who screened pictures on the big wall so the kids could see. She typed quickly into Naver search engine the keywords and all of you were met with colourful fish and massive corals. It made you smile right away and Jackson went up to the picture and tried to simplify the information about the coral reefs.
âThey are extremely endagered. You know Nemo, right? Well, he also lives in these coral reefs. However, Nemo cannot cope with warm water. That is what causes these reefs to die out - warmed up temperatures.â
All of you continued with your presentations, trying to engage children as much as possible and at the end having a nice little quiz (with a rewarding present too!).
Jaebeom was breaking jokes about sea horses that you tried not to cringe about but thanks to Bambam, he supported every idea. It almost seemed like he knew only the silly stuff and not the important information.
After you were finished, you stopped Bam on your way out, so that Jackson and Jaebeom wouldn't hear you.
"Can we go diving today?" you spilled.
If Bambam was surprised, he didn't show it. Instead a signature smile spread across his face. "Well of course , boss. But I made a reservation at this five star restaurant you have in this little town so I will go there first."
You sighed, trying not to show your frustration. "Look. You shouldn't eat before diving especially not with the depth of our diving. Secondly, I thought you came here to help, not try all these so call five star restaurants."
BamBam laughed, tapping your shoulder. "should I cancel because of you, Y/N?"
"Exactly my idea," you smiled, walking past him.
He was quick to grab your hand though. "How will you refund me this loss?"
"What? What do you mean?"
"Well, you know how important I hold my luxury living. Since I'm going to sacrifice it for you, I hope it will be rewarding at least." His hand trailed over your arm, teasing you.
By now you knew better than to take his ideas seriously. "Well, heated kissing under the water, how does that sound."
Bam laughed tapping you shoulder. "Good enough, girl, good enough."
You couldnât believe your own words. Your own mouth. Your own tongue. heated kissing under the water?! There was a sudden urge for you to slap yourself as you were heading to the docks to meet Bambam. How on earth could be this cheesy?
You knew Bam was not serious half of the time and even though he did tell you some good things about the marine biology and how to lead this entire expedition, there was just something slightly off. Whenever someone had a really professional question, he would suddenly go quiet, dissing the question with a simple answer that didnât really add to your knowledge.
When you entered the docks with all your equipment, you were surprised to find him already there. He seemed deep in thought, his uniform already on.
You paused for moment, thinking what to do.
Set your goals straight...
There was no doubt you needed this guy for you to find the creature. He had all the knowledge. Apparently...
âHow was it when you found out people know you?â you walked towards him, a challenging smile on your burned face. âAnd why would you talk about whale poop anyway.â
Bambam smirked as he turned towards you, his full attention now on you. âHow else do you want to get the kids attention if not with something silly.â
âGood for you it was a true fact what you said,â you replied, putting on your swimming gear.
âI only say things that are true,â he murmured, eyeing you up.
A blush creeped up into your cheeks as you zipped up the uniform on your back. You both checked whether the equipment you had was prepared for the dive. âI sure hope so.â
âSo the kissing part,â he started.
You held out your hand quickly. âStop right there. I didnât mean any of that.â
âAnd here I thought you liked me.â
âI do,â you said without thinking and immediately closed your mouth in pure shock. What did you just say?!
âYou do?â he asked, his eyes full of hope.
You blinked a few times, hiding behind one of the oxygen bombs. âWhat? I mean I like the weather today.â
Bambam burst out into fit of laughters. âYou are actually super cute, you know that? You play all this hardly approached girl but you are such a softie.â
âThat is some good load of whale poop,â a doubtful laughter was the only thing you could let out. âAnyway, letâs go already. Itâs gonna be super dark in a few.â
âYes, thatâs the point of night diving.â
As you walked passed him, you turned sharply, facing him. âListen, Bambam. Whatever it is you are thinking, stop it. And just so you know, I have my eyes on you.â
He wiggled his eyebrows at you, obviously not taking you seriously but you just sighed and headed towards the little stairs leading into the water. It wasnât until you reached the edge and you slipped on it that you felt his hands around your waist. You yelped feeling him pulling you backwards. It made him slip almost as well but he managed to keep a strong stance making sure you are steady.
You stayed like that for a few more seconds before your heart beat could simmer down to a normal rate. Slowly turning around, you saw Bambamâs gentle face. His eyes were already on you when you met his gaze. His hand reached out and slowly pushed your messy hair out of your face before his index finger slipped under your chin, sending goosebumps down your spine.
You didnât realise you were holding your breath until his face was inching closer to yours.
Oh no.
What was he doing?!

Rules: Answer the questions youâre given, write 11 of your own and tag 11 people.
(1.) Is there anything you dislike about the character(s) you play? OC or otherwise? How difficult he can be. He doesnât make plotting or interactions easy for anyone and itâs hard to be spontaneous with him unless heâs under some influence. It gets bothersome at times when you see muses you as the mun like, but know your OC would never have anything to do with them.Â
(2.) How many languages can you speak? I can only speak English. I took over 2 years of Mandarin but still couldnât properly speak it, though I can read it pretty decently. Same with Japanese - took 4 years but at most can just read it. I understand a lot of Spanish and some Korean. I took Arabic in high school, but I suck at it. Only know like 3 words now.Â
(3.) Where did you first go on vacation? I remember as a child when my parents were still together, we went on a road trip from Chicago all the way to Disneyland in California. We went through Colorado, I got to hand feed a giraffe, I fell on a cactus, I cried about not being able to go on the monorail, had my first BBQ sauce pizza (which I hated) -- I think that was my first vacation.Â
(4.) Do you have any potentially-unpopular opinions about your character or the fandom that theyâre involved in? Since Myles started off as a Starfighter OC, I guess youâre asking me if I have any unpopular opinions on Starfighter? Do you have 8 hours? I understand that Starfighter is/was supposed to be a smut comic and was actually supposed to stop after âchapter 1âł but got so popular that the author decided to continue writing it. I understand that a majority of the plot is based around two dudes fuckinâ and I understand that expecting or asking for more than that is silly.
BUT THERE IS SO MUCH POTENTIAL JUST WASTED. THE WHOLE REASON I EVEN FUCKIN JOINED THAT FANDOM WAS BECAUSE I THOUGHT I COULD DO IT BETTER AND YOU KNOW WHAT? I fucking did. Hamlet gives such a great basis and outline for amazing world building that just ends up falling flat because the story is focused on well detailed dick draws (which are great btw, I wonât slight her for that). The concept of the last surviving humans fighting against an alien collective using their own tech against them just gets my dick hard, but all of that is sort of thrown to way side and lost under âwho emotionally betrayed whoâ and âI love you now even if I didnât at the beginningâ nonsense. You can still have a great romance story OR EVEN PWP?? But establish it in a world that makes fucking sense. There are all of these aspects that weâll never get answers on that sheâs just thrown into the story as a vehicle to get to the next sex scene and it just rustles my fucking jimmies.Â
I had to stop writing in the fandom because I honestly am incapable of writing with the new people who come in -- nothing against them and their writing abilities, Iâm sure theyâre great, but everyone always comes in like âIâm looking for an Abel for my Cainâ or vice versa, or just some smutty locker room pwp and weird Commander Daddy Doms -- just things Iâve read over and over and over again that have just become absolutely bland.Â
DID YOU KNOW??? There are whole constellations?? of crystals floating through space? Shattered diamonds and acidic clouds?? Did you know?? that there are 3 different theorized ways to bend space and time to create warp drives? Could you imagine being the final ship BSG style trying to float your way to what essentially might be your grave in space avoiding stars that are literally eating each other so that you can fight an alien race that has destroyed not only one, but many of your species homelands???Â
BUT WAIT, LEMMIE GET A DICK IN THIS SPACE CRAFT FOR A MINUTE AND WE CAN BICKER ABOUT HOW U LOOK LIKE MY EX.KJDHGJKGHKDJGHS IT JUST MAKES ME SO MAD. DONT GET ME STARTED, I FEEL VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT SPACE.
(5.) How many kids would you like in the future? 0 is also an acceptable answer! z e r o -- I can barely take care of myself, how am I supposed to take care of another life??
(6.) Have you ever broken down into tears because of writing a roleplay scene? No, idk, I donât get that emotional about things? Last time I cried was because I was on drugs after my surgery and there was no ice for my tea.Â
(7.) Where did you first get started roleplaying? Gaiaonline.com sgjkdhskgjs I still have my account.Â
(8.) Quick! Make a list. FIVE FILMS TO SEE BEFORE YOU DIE. That I havenât seen already??? uhhhh UHHHHHH 1. Schindlerâs List 2. Breakfast At Tiffanyâs 3. Shape of Water 4. Hurt Locker 5. 13 AssassinsÂ
(9.) If we had to ask your friends to explain you in five words or less, how do you think that theyâd describe you? avoidant, funny, no-shit taking, emotionally strong, positive ((I guess????))
(10.) What is one of your life mottos that helps you get through each and every day? âNo regrets.â âNo excuses, nobody cares.â âBut will it kill you?â
(11.) Do you feel comfortable writing NSFW themes? Hahahahaha WELL. Yes - Iâm comfortable with plotting out the nasty nast, but when it comes to actually writing it? It takes me forever because I get really really really embarrassed. I once talked to Lex about lube and it was just me screaming uncomfortably for about 15 minutes, but ask me about nasty fuckin and I gotchu.Â
Rules: Answer the questions youâre given, write 11 of your own and tag 11 people.
(1.) Hardest thread/plot youâve ever done and why? Did you complete it? (2.) A song that triggers a memory and what happened (3.) Favorite subject in school (4.) Do you have any potentially-unpopular opinions about your character or the fandom that theyâre involved in? (5.) Would you chose to be immortal? (6.) Have you ever considered veganism / vegetarianism? Why or why not?  (7.) Who/What was your first OC? Describe them. (8.) Be honest... how honest are you with your friends? Your family? (9.) What would be your superpower and would you use it for good? (10.) What did you do before Tumblr? (11.) Guilty pleasure food

hi, I'm the anon who sent you the photobooth prompt and I'm here to bring you another fluffy headcanon ⥠Jancy movie night! With lots of cuddles and eventually falling asleep on the couch
A/N: Great h/c, I use this for the finale of Jancy Fanfic Week: Valentineâs Day, so itâs this h/c plus more. Fluff and a bit of smut ahoy.
Also on Ao3 and FFNet.
âHi Nancy, itâs Joyce.â
âHey! How are you?â She greets happily, but slightly confused as to why her boyfriendâs mother is calling her on Valentineâs Day rather than the boyfriend in question.
âOh, very well, thank you. But unfortunately Jonathan will have to cancel your date tonight he-â
Joyce is interrupted by a voice in the background. She can hear Jonathan call out âlet me talk to herâ and the two of them arguing a bit back and forth, Joyce for some reason insisting that he should stay seated. Her confusion grows. She then hears several heavy thuds, more of a whispered argument and then some shuffling as the phone receiver changes hands.
âHey,â he says.
âHi, uh⊠whatâs going on?â
âWell um⊠I sort of hurt my foot a little bit.â
âWhat?â She asks, she can hear Joyce in the background calling out that he broke it. He shushes his mom before explaining.
âOkay, kind of broke it.â
âWhat happened?!â
âI slipped on the ice this morning and it sort of got caught under me and I landed really weird, like on it, somehow. We just got back from the emergency room.â
âOh my god!â
âItâs not a big deal! Listen we could still go out tonight I just have to-â He stops himself again for another argumentation with his mom, she can hear Joyce talking about keeping it elevated and Jonathan arguing that itâs not that important.
âHey, Jonathan,â she calls to get his attention again.
âYeah?â
âListen to your mom, sheâs right. Weâll go out to dinner some other time, itâs not a big deal, just a silly commercial holiday, okay?â
âBut itâs-â
âItâs fine, donât worry about it. Feel better, see you soon,â she says, already formulating a plan in her head. âLove you, bye,â she finishes.
âNancy?â Joyce looks surprised when she opens the door.
âHi,â she smiles as Joyce steps aside to let her in.
Jonathanâs laying on the couch and looks even more surprised and immediately starts to shift. He got his foot in a cast up on the coffee table and Will is crouched by it, drawing on the cast. He whines when Jonathan starts to try and move.
âNo, donât get up!â She calls out.
âWhat are you doing here?â He asks.
âWell, you canât go out on that foot, so I came here,â she explains while she walks over to him. âNice,â she nods to Will, whoâs drawn Ziggy Stardust on Jonathanâs broken foot. Will grins.
âOh how nice!â Joyce says and Jonathanâs lips turn upwards.
âAnd I brought some stuff,â she continues, shrugging of the backpack thatâs slung over her shoulder.
âWhat did you bring?â Jonathan asks.
âSome chocolates in a ridiculous box,â she starts, pulling out the heart-shaped box she picked up. âAnd a couple of movies,â she continues digging, âsome more assorted candy,â she pulls out some Twizzlers, his favorite, â⊠and Clue,â she finishes, taking out the board game.
âGreat,â he smiles.
âOh and I was going to get you flowers too, but the florist on Main Street looked at me with pity so I got out of there. I was going to take my business elsewhere but then I realized thereâs only one florist in town.â
Jonathan chuckles.
âGone With the Wind, Casablanca, Breakfast at Tiffanyâs, An Officer and a Gentleman?â Will grimaces at the movies she rented.
âYes, and Jonathan gets to pick!â She gleefully lets him know.
âLucky you,â Will deadpans at his brother. âMom can you drive me over to Mikeâs now?â He then asks.
âYeah sure honey. Have fun you too, Iâm seeing Hop later so I wonât bother you! Bye!â
Joyce and Will leave and theyâre alone.
âDoes it hurt?â She asks, looking over his foot.
âNo, they gave me some painkillers.â
âGood, I figured. I was gonna bring vodka but you shouldnât mix those, right?â
âRight.â
She crouches down. Will left his stuff on the table so she takes a pen and draws some roses on another part of the cast. âThere, got you flowers,â she smiles.
âThanks,â he smirks. âIâm sorry about dinner, I wanted to-â
âItâs fine. Really. I donât need a fancy dinner, just you,â she says before kissing him. âOkay?â
âOkay. But just for the record, I had made plans to woo you.â
âOh yeah?â She smirks, sitting down next to him. âTell me about them.â
âFlowers, chocolates, the whole works. And I was thinking that new Italian place for dinner. Oh, and I made the mushiest tape, for you,â he says and pulls out a mix tape from his shirt pocket and hands it to her.
She smiles as she reads the playlist.
The Beach Boys â Wouldnât It Be Nice
The Turtles â Happy Together
Modern English â I Melt With You
New Order â Temptation
Depeche Mode â Just Canât Get Enough
The Bee Gees â How Deep Is Your Love?
The Beatles - Something
Simon & Garfunkel â For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her
The Doors â Light My Fire
Ben E. King â Stand By Me
Roy Orbison â Blue Bayou
Billie Holiday â You Better Go Now
âMy oh my Byers, youâd woo any girl with that plan, I can tell you,â she teases. âLuckily youâd already wooed me,â she smirks.
âYeah, lucky indeed,â he answers and kisses her.
âThis really is very sweet,â she says, gesturing with the tape in her hand. âThe Bee Gees?â She questions, amused. Itâs so far from his usual tastes.
âIt pained me, but yes,â he says.
âAnd not a single punk song or song about someone wanting to die!â She further notes.
âI know, it took a lot of effort,â he jokes.
âOkay, I say it was Mrs. Peacock, in the Billiard Room, with the Candlestick,â she says before checking the envelope. âYes!â She calls out when she learns that she was correct.
âYou win again,â Jonathan grumbles.
â3-0!â She says with glee, quite pleased with herself. She likes to win.
âI give up,â Jonathan sighs.
âAw, well-played anyway,â she says and sticks out her hand. He rolls his eyes and gives it a shake.
âYouâre way to good at this game.â
âDo you know all the lines?â She asks halfway through Gone With the Wind, sitting up a bit from where sheâd been snuggled into his chest.
âWhat?â
âYouâve been mouthing along.â
âNo I havenât.â
âYes you have.â
âNo I havenât!â
âYes you have, itâs really cute.â
âI wasnât mouthing along!â
âDonât worry, I wonât tell Will. I think.â
He looks to be about to protest again so she silences him with a kiss, that always works.
When she gets up to get Gone With the Wind out of the VCR and put Breakfast at Tiffanyâs in, he starts to prepare himself to stand up too.
âNo no, sit, sit. What do you need? I told you, Iâll get it, just sit.â
âI have to pee, Nance.â
âOh. Well let me help you to the bathroom,â she says and takes his left arm over her shoulders and supports him as he hobbles forward on one leg.
She helps him all the way inside.
âThanks, I think I got it from here,â he says but she starts to unzip him. âNance, I didnât break my handsâŠâ
âWhat? Not like I havenât taken your pants off before,â She smirks.
âYouâre not watching me pee,â he says firmly.
âRight, weâre not there yet,â she says and walks out, closing the door behind her.
As soon as she hears him flush she walks in again.
âJesus Christ, Nancy,â he sighs.
âWhat?â She smirks again before helping him back to the couch.
Thirty minutes into Breakfast at Tiffanyâs and they have definitely lost focus on the movie. It started innocently enough, Nancy simply resettled her position, curling up even closer to him and letting out a content sigh. He in turn pressed a kiss to the top of her head. Then she tilted her head up so he kissed her on the lips. After that they were gone, really. Itâs just very hard not to kiss Nancyâs lips. Theyâre just so soft and inviting and perfect. And then her tongue was in his mouth. Thatâs when things escalated. Now his hands are under her shirt, cupping her breasts. He loves the way her breath hitches when he runs a thumb over the nipple. And her hand is inside his boxers, stroking him. She briefly releases her grip on his cock only to unzip him again and liberate him from the suddenly very constricting denim. She manages to jiggle his jeans down slightly and then pulls his dick out through the hole in the front of the boxers. She takes him in her hand again and starts to jerk him off. Heâs rock hard within seconds, she knows just how to get him there, and quickly. Honestly the way she bites her lip slightly and looks him in the eyes is almost enough by itself.
âNance,â he moans.
âWait two seconds,â she says, voice low and husky.
She lets go of him and jumps off the couch, darting into his room. He can hear her opening the familiar drawer in his nightstand. Her return to the couch isnât as quick. But then she suddenly stands before him again, completely nude. Heâs seen her naked plenty of times of course, but his eyes almost pop out of his skull. Itâs not often sheâs before him just like that, suddenly, in all her glory, in good lighting. There will never a more gorgeous sight.
âWow,â he mumbles to himself. She smirks a bit and locks eyes with him. She straddles him so one of his thighs are between hers. She rubs her pussy against his denim clad leg while putting the condom on him and he can feel how wet she is. She readjusts herself again, straddling him with one knee on either side of his hips. She grips his cock by the base, steering it inside of her as she slowly sinks down on him. All the way down.
âFuck,â she breathes out, eyes closed. He holds her steady with his hands on her hips. She leans forward, resting her elbows against the back of the couch and starts to ride him. She leans in and kisses him again and again. Her hands go in his hair, messing it up like sheâs taken to do sometimes for some reason he donât understand but kind of likes.
She puts her forehead against his and opens her eyes.
âHappy Valentineâs Day,â she murmurs as she continues riding him.
âYou too,â is all he can mutter back because he canât manage that many syllables right now. âI love you,â he does manage to get out after a second though.
âLove⊠you,â she breathes out.
She increases the speed, riding him quicker and quicker. He wants it to last forever, for her to always be on top of him like this, but eventually he comes inside the condom. She collapses against him and his arms go around her back, holding her close. His cock stays inside her pussy, slowly going flaccid again. She lifts her pussy up a bit so it slinks out of her. She distracts him with a kiss and removes the condom, careful not to spill on the couch, then quickly jumping off him and the couch to dispose of it and clean herself up a bit. He zips up. She returns fully dressed again a couple of minutes later and curls up to him again.
Eventually they realize they should probably eat something at least a bit more substantial then candy. She insists that sheâll take care of dinner so he doesnât have to get up, but he doesnât trust her in the kitchen. The words âfire hazardâ and âyour track record isnât greatâ are used. In the end she convinces him to remain seated while she makes some grilled cheese sandwiches. Even she canât screw up grilled cheese, sheâs pretty sure. Heâs doubtful and tries to keep an eye on her from the sofa.
âWell?â She asks after heâs bitten into his sandwich.
âFine, you can make grilled cheese,â he admits.
âTold you. Iâm not a complete mess in the kitchen.â
âDid you turn off the-â He begins asking but before he finishes her eyes go wide and she darts into the kitchen. Seconds later she plops down on the couch again.
âYes I did,â she tries to play it off casually.
âSmooth,â he laughs. She huffs and digs into her sandwich.
The clock is well past midnight when she gets home after a wonderful evening with Jim. They are taking things slow though, as theyâve explained to the kids. Will is spending the night at the Wheelerâs. She sees that Nancyâs car is still parked outside. She doesnât mind that at all. She adores Nancy. Sheâs smart, nice and caring, fun and she makes Jonathan happy. Thatâs more than enough, and sheâs done way more than enough. She saved Will. Sheâll never be able to thank her enough for that. And so far as spending the night goes, she trusts both Jonathan and Nancy, theyâre responsible. Plus, she was young once too. Itâs not like separating them at night would mean they wouldnât be sexually active, sheâs not that naĂŻve. She puts the key in the lock and steps inside.
She recognizes the ending of Casablanca on the tv. In the sofa both teens are asleep. Her son lying with his injured foot up on the coffee table on a pillow. Nancy draped over him, resting her head against his chest, one arm flung across him. His cheek rests against the top of her head and heâs got one arm over her shoulders, holding her close. Itâs a sight that warms her heart.
Spotting Jonathanâs camera on the table she canât resist. She picks it up without a second thought. Itâs not the same one she got him years ago, that one broke during that infamous week in November of 1983. And this new one was better. And it was Nancy whoâd given it to him. She looks through the lens and takes a picture before setting down the camera again in the same place. She then picks up the remote and turns off the tv before retreating to her bedroom.
Usually their routine is that he picks up Nancy for school. With his foot in a cast though they change it, she insists on coming by and picking him up even though he said his mom could drive him, he didnât want to be a bother. Itâs a bit of a grind getting around school on the crutches, especially up stairs. Nancy also insists on carrying his books for him.
They spend lunch hour in the darkroom, as usual since winter came and it became too cold to have lunch on his car outside away from everyone else. The darkroom gives them the same privacy. Plus he can use the time to develop photos too. Itâs a bit of a challenge doing it balancing on one leg but as heâd explained to Nancy this was something he had to do himself, no matter how smart she is she doesnât know how to do this. And yes thereâs a learning curve. And no, itâs not possible for her to have just picked everything up from watching him previously.
Towards the end of the roll he finds something surprising.
âI canât believe my mom sometimes,â he mutters, looking at the newly developed photo of the two of them asleep on the couch.
âAw, I want a copy of that,â Nancy says and presses a kiss to his cheek.
